Came here on a Saturday morning at 10:30 AM and the place was packed by locals, many after their morning runs. It's conveniently located right next to the beach, so we took our drinks on our walk. So lovely! I got the Chai Latte. It's pretty sweet, but it was the perfect temperature to bring out on my walk and keep my hands warm on the chilly morning. The staff are super friendly and work as fast as they can given the popularity of the shop -- my drink took about 10 minutes. There's not a great spot to wait for to-go orders, so it can get a bit crowded. I want to try the pastries next time, they looked yummy! read more

I went on a Saturday with my friends who ordered at the counter while I ordered at the kiosk. Friend 1 ordered 2 burritos and a coffee. Friend 2 ordered 1 burritos. I ordered 1 burrito and a coffee. While my friends orders came out within 10 minutes, only my coffee came out. When I asked the staff about the status of my burrito, they first said they were still waiting for it. Then the second time they said my group only ordered 3 total burritos (when it was 4) and tried to tell me I didn't pay for a burrito myself. I had to prove it to them that I did pay by showing the coffee order so they could look it up on their machine. They still didn't get my burrito and instead gave me someone else's who they said took mine. I was sitting right next to the counter where they were calling orders the whole time and no one had called my name for a burrito. They didn't even say sorry. The food and coffee were decent but nothing would bring me back after being accused that I didn't pay as well as giving me someone else's burrito. Stopped by in the afternoon hoping for a quick pick-me-up. The place had a steady flow of customers, but no one acknowledged me when I walked in, so I ended up waiting around ten minutes before getting someone's attention. Once I did, the staff was friendly and helpful, which I appreciated. I ordered a large drip coffee and a bear claw that looked really good. The bear claw was definitely the highlight, flaky and flavorful, and even better after warming it up at home. The coffee, on the other hand, wasn't great. It had a lot of grounds in it which made about half the cup hard to drink. The cafe itself is in a great spot with plenty of seating and a clean bathroom. It's easy to see why people come here since there aren't many other options in this part of the city. They also serve other desserts like soft serve, which I passed on since it was a cold day. What great ambiance! Great little breakfast nook/bar right on the end of Judah street. Easy access with the streetcar right there and wonderful booth and bar seating. Nice selection of coffees with some breakfast options. I chose the breakfast burrito expecting a normally sized one for the 15 dollars I was paying only for the diameter of the burrito to be around an inch. The burrito itself was actually great, with nice non greasy bacon and a soft and velvety egg. The portion size is just wayyyyy too small for what you are paying for. If you want a breakfast burrito look elsewhere. If you want a nice place to sit down with your coffee, this is the place to be. read more

It's been a few years since I've been out to Java Beach Cafe. Had some out of town guests who I thought would enjoy it. It still has a good chill vibe. My visitors ordered, then I ordered. The young woman who took our orders made mistakes on both. My visitors ordered and iced coffee. She got a hot coffee. I ordered a decaf americano and a scone and my daughter ordered a lemon bar and hot chocolate. The worker missed the scone. Had to ring us back up again. No biggie. However the deal killer is: they gave me caffeinated coffee. Caffeine has a terrible effect on me - my heart is racing, my muscles clench and spasm. Pure misery for me. I blame it on the idiot who took our order. Harsh? Maybe, but this is serious stuff. The caffeine could potentially cause a coronary event for me and others - it needs to be taken seriously and this young woman messed up majorily - so until there are competent employees - I can't recommend Java Beach Hut. read more

Cute little cafe by Ocean Beach, very friendly and welcoming ambience that surrounds this corner. My boyfriend and I happened to be walking by and noticed the crowd that was outside Java Beach Cafe, and decided to stop by. The shop inside has ample space with plenty of seating, definitely family friendly. We ordered a latte to share together, I love that they don't add sweetener - you could definitely ask for it but there's an area by the pick-up to add in your creamer, sugar and toppings. Love this place. I have fond memories coming here to get lunch or a coffee while studying. I also loved their pre-covid live music evenings with a local band and hope they bring that back. My favorites are their veggie sub and and their Mexican Salad, so good. Great coffee too. It's gotten a little pricie over the years, but the food is still great. For just about as long as I can remember, Java Beach has seemingly held a special place in the hearts of so many people on this side of the city. The cynical part of me has always attributed it to the fact that there aren't exactly a ton of alternatives out here, but really, I just never got it. However, now that I've been? I totally get it. It's not the trendiest of spots, nor is it the biggest, but there's no question that it fits the neighborhood so well. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the food and coffee here actually isn't too shabby. Every time I've been, it always feels like I've been transported somewhere else along the coast. Whether it be the smell of the ocean, the cold breeze, or the surfers who wander in throughout the day, it definitely feels more like you're in Pacifica or Half Moon Bay than SF. In general, the vibes here are just different from most other places in the city - they've even got a small "bar" with a handful of beers on tap. As for the rest of the menu, the coffee offerings are pretty typical of a neighborhood coffee shop (though, they do have some interesting varieties of lattes), as are their display case full of baked goodies (all locally sourced). Their hot menu, however, includes some enticing items, even if they aren't ridiculously unique, such as several types of breakfast burritos, hot subs, sandwiches, Irish soda bread, and lavash wraps. -- HOT TSUNAMI SANDWICH - Ham, Salami, Mortadella, and Melted Cheese (Swiss) with Mayo, Mustard, Lettuce, Tomato, Red Onions, and Special Sauce on a French Roll...$17.50 Not that I ever expected this to be bad, but it was way better than I thought it would be. I always wish sandwiches had more meat, but this was packed as is. What's more, the veggies added a nice bit of freshness and tasted great with their special sauce. -- TURKEY SUB - Turkey and Melted Cheese (Pepper Jack) with Mayo, Mustard, Lettuce, Tomato, Red Onions, and Special Sauce on Dutch Crunch...$16.75 Pretty solid, though, the Hot Tsunami is better (it has some of my favorite cuts and more meat). While it's not freshly roasted Turkey (a la Arguello Market's), the slices of turkey are thick and plentiful and I loved the Dutch crunch bread. The one unfortunate thing that has come up is that sometime before my most recent visit, not only has Java Beach's prices crept up, but their potato chips (which were quite tasty) are no longer included with their sandwiches either (you can still it for an added cost). Sign of the times to be sure, but it still makes their sandwiches a bit pricey, understandable or not. As for drinks, their regular HOUSE DRIP COFFEE ($3.75 for 12 oz) is pretty good and decently strong, but my go-to order has actually been their ARNOLD PALMER ($6.50 for 16 oz), which is always refreshing with just the right sweetness. Given how popular they are in the neighborhood, getting a table inside can be a challenge at times, but sitting outside or in their parklet is definitely the way to go when the weather is nice. Somewhat similarly, finding nearby parking is really easy as well, which makes Java Beach a super convenient spot whenever my friends who live nearby want to meet up. I like coffee on the sweeter side so I asked the cashier which drinks were mor popular and he recommended the butterscotch latte or a chocolate ganache latte. I love butterscotch so I had to go with that - hot of course. I was a little worried it might be too sweet but it was pretty good. Not too sweet and enough of a coffee taste. The owner/manager has something against people who ride bikes too, which is too bad as I was born and raised in the Sunset and love riding and had been going to Java Beach for decades. The butterscotch cold brew is like a step-up to a Starbucks caramel macchiato as the taste is more rich and toasty. Quite strong too even for cold brew standards. Oatmeal raisin cookie here is pretty good; nothing groundbreaking but satisfies the chewy-cookie craving. All of the indoor seats were occupied on a weekday early afternoon. There just aren't that many spots so close to the water where you can grab a bite. In fact, I had never eaten here before my most recent visit. I've had coffee here several times but not an actual meal. Turned out it has been my loss. The reality is that it's usually pretty crowded here on any given day, rain or shine. However, I noticed a couple of outdoor tables were actually open this time, so why not get a pre-beach lunch here? I staked out a table and ordered the &14.95 Beetnik Salad, which was a fresh toss of arugula and romaine mixed with quinoa, roasted beets, and Fuji apple slices. Chopped dates, roasted almonds, and parmesan added welcome added flavor and texture. I used to love this place back in the day. Huge sandwiches, great ambiance. Now...the same Kelly's Cove I used to love is a sad, anemic shell of itself. They removed the avocado. Barely any turkey. It's half the size it used to be. And they charge extra for chips on the side. Oh yeah, the sandwich is $18- $24 after tax and tip. For something I could make for $5 or less at home. No thanks. We had intended to work remotely at an Andytown Coffee location but for some reason 3-4 locations were either closed, not found or lacked parking. We stumbled upon Java Beach Cafe that seems to attract many locals. The restaurant floors are disgusting. There is muck and crumbs everywhere. I've never sat down at such a sticky table. It made me wary of the kitchen's condition. We were hungry and I ordered the Hot Classic Veggie. It was three cheeses piled on onions, mayo, mustard, tomato, onion, cucumber and avocado. The sandwich itself was huge but it was drowned in so much dressing that the entire bottom was soggy and soaked by the time I unwrapped it. It was super sloppy and hard to eat. It was also over $15 for no protein? It was also hard to enjoy in a dirty restaraunt. I would suggest turning your head to the left and reading the breakfast menu instead of the lunch menu. There are bagels offered at a much cheaper rate with various spreads like hummus, pesto etc. and you can add veggies. The coffee tastes burnt, the cups are cute though. read more
