The ultimately utilitarian restarurant! My wife, on a TCM practitioner's recommended diet, wanted an Omelete that Ocean Beach cafe couldn't provide and who sent us to TJ Cafe 3 doors down the street. The omelletes were actually OK - if they'd been served on a china plate, with a lettuce leaf and orange slice garnish or something, I would probably have given them 4 stars - but on a paper plate with a plastic fork? And no free refills on the coffee? No doubt, if quick in and out food is your need, this place will suffice, but for a nice beach front atmosphere in a comfortable space with good attentive service on a Sunday morning, look elsewhere. Their website says they are a "charming eatery nestled in San Francisco, known for its cozy ambiance and delicious comfort food". This place was quite a surprise for us when we were looking for a bite to eat after a run. Wasn't busy at all when we walked in and were pleasantly surprised by the good prices considering the location being a block away from the ocean. The food was simple and tasty, wasn't too oily which was very appreciated. The food also came out quite quick, no hassle in ordering either. Came by at 4PM on Thanksgiving after a family walk through Lands End to grab a snack, so happy we stopped in!! I feel like I've discovered my new go-to place for beach sandwiches over here. Had a Western Grilled Cheesesteak and it was so fresh and hot. The bread was soft, sweet, and nicely toasted. Perfect balance of meat, cheese, and veggies too. These are also my favorite kind of fries - they remind me of my local diner from back home. They came fresh out of the fryer and paired so well with cold ketchup! Well, this spot could sing a sequel, "I'm Not a Fast Food Joint, Not Yet a Cafe". it feels like something in between way out on La Playa near Ocean Beach. It's the last residential street before you hit the Great Highway and a convenient place to grab a lunch before embarking on a cross-city walk. There are quite a few breakfast and burger choices on the menu - though I focused exclusively on their sandwiches on my two visits here (so far). For my virginal meal, I went for the $11.95 B.L.A.S.T. which was a BLT with the addition of avocado and alfalfa sprouts stuffed between two slices of sourdough toast. Overall , for the location and price wasn't impressed with frozen potatoes, sausage that were two sliced into 1/4 to spread . Potatoes were mushy and could've been cooked longer my partners burrito tortilla could've been warm / toasted . Very similar to hotel breakfast just alot more expensive. read more

I'm usually wary of restaurants that serve fish and chips that don't specialize in fish and chips, so I didn't expect TJ Cafe's three piece fish and chips to blow my mind as much as it did. Dude. These are insane. They were crisp, light, and flavorful, everything you'd expect good fish and chips to be, and more. They weren't battered the traditional way, rather breaded with panko crumbs, which I think was a superb choice. The fries were nice and crispy, but they don't come with salt, so you'll have to put it on yourself if you like that way. Not to mention the food arrived much faster than expected. Overall, a lovely place, lovely food. Everything is well priced, the ambience is very nostalgic. The fact that I took a chance with the most risky thing on the menu and it came out amazing speaks to the quality of the rest of the menu. Got the BLAST sandwich with mayo and toasted white bread. It was great for the price. I just wished they salted their fries. Not a big deal as there were packets of salt on the table for me to season my own fries. The waitress was kind and polite. I'm not the type to care about ambiance if the food is good. This is a nice place right across the beach. Parking will probably be hard if you can't find a parking spot at the beach area, since it's in a residential area and parking seems scarce. We ordered the Veggie Burger and the bacon cheeseburger. When I asked what is in the veggie burger, the lady said "it's a garden patty." All of it came out very fresh and it was good. For $0.60, we upgraded the fries in the meal to garlic fries. However, they did not put garlic fries in the order the first time and she simply took them and then added garlic on them. The price was good for the quality and we would come back the next time we are in the area. read more

Average food not the best prices good and fast service but think that there are better places

Well this place was okay. I wanted to try it since all their reviews were so high. I got fish n chips and my friend got a Teriyaki chicken sandwich. There's no where to sit, so we got drinks at Ocean Beach a couple doors down. They had an outside parklet setup up. We probably should've got food from there instead...... My friend liked his sandwich, but it wasn't anything outstanding. The fish n chips were fine, but honestly. I think they were just ones general run of the mill frozen food and then deep fired. So neither dish was pictured, so if someone is nearby their food was okay, but nothing special. I favor home cooked fresher food, sorry I'm picky. read more

This establishment appears to be encouraging homeless people to setup their encampment directly outside. I will personally boycott this business because 1) its disgusting, unhealthy, unsafe 2) i dont support businesses that encourage homeless encampments that litter everywhere Also the food sucks. I freaking love Asian owned American food places. It's not quite traditional American style, but it's made very well... FRIED very well. Been here a couple of times. Very good burrito. Me and my friends enjoyed! Good food. I got sausage burrito. So did 2 out of the 6 of my friends. They liked it too. My one friend got a club sandwich, said it was rockin. Food is ok but not great. There's a smell of burnt fryer oil, smokey inside because their deep fryers are too hot. 2 visits and same experience. The French fries tasted like they were fried in old oil. Not too impressed. I hope they correct this because I hate to see small businesses go under. Mom and pop store with a fast-food feel. Great place to grab a quick bite if you don't feel like cooking or you're just in the area. There are a variety of items on the menu including breakfast in the morning. Their burgers are good as we had the California burger and that was tasty. The fish and chips were ok. They were crunchy style (panko) rather than battered. The thin cuts of fish were a bit too salty and fries weren't salty enough. The clam chowder tasted like canned soup and the egg in the breakfast bagel sandwich was so oily and over cooked. It had a rubbery texture and tasted like old oil. We had 3 hungry kids, and found this place on yelp that was a quick walk from the beach parking lot. What a find! Service was fast, and the food was what you want in a tasty burger and fries. Piping hot and made to order. One last mention of the cashier - super friendly and efficient - and patient in taking down 5 hamburger with different nuances (picky kids).
