Steins never fails to make my stomach happy. My mother and I, every year look for a place that serves fish and chips in memory of my sister (that was her fav dish!). We try different places every year but once we decided to try steins we have gone there every year since and I'll sometimes get it to go randomly through the year. Crispy, clean exterior and a soft and flaky interior, paired with malt vinegar and there's not much else you need except for a beer of course which they have a huge selection of. The World Cup being played in America has been a journey which brought the world together the San Francisco area. As the motherland Spain won the World Cup. There are plenty of good sports bars through out the city to a grab drink. There are some pubs with descent food. There is a German bar in the city of San Francisco which serves big steins of beer and food. It's located on Clement in the Inner Richmond District and it is called Steins. On the last weekend of the World Cup stroll in San Francisco on Clement street I landed at Steins. Inside you will see lots tables along with bar stools. I had a few steins of Hofbräu Original which were refreshing . I then ordered the fish and chips. The fish was fresh and crispy and if you like it sour like some in SF you can add the vinegar and do the performative extra lemon squeeze. The fries were almost like having Mc Donald's fries and were crispy and not too salty like some in SF. Overall a good place to catch a game all four seasons. The best pilsners on draft! Super friendly staff who are always kind and helpful when we bring our baby to eat. We love going here to watch Sunday football games, and we normally stay for a game or two to watch the 49ers and New York Giants. We love ordering the chicken fingers, bratwursts, and they make a fantastic burger. I love the large portions and fun German half liter mugs that they serve beer in. This is an amazing pub with Austrian background. The food was good. I had fish and chips and it was very crunchy fried but not as much flavor as it could be. But in terms of the goulash it was very good. And the brockwurst was great with the mustard provided. Service was outstanding. And it is a classic pub experience and ambience. I have been in the restaurant business my entire career. When our party of three was finally asked what we wanted to eat I ordered a blue cheese bacon burger mid rare. Then the waitress told me that when they are busy they only cook the burgers medium. I said to her 'I've never heard that before' and she said 'give me a break, look around'. Astonishingly rude. Then, after forty minutes she brought us three beers. The food took, not forty minutes, not fifty five minutes, not an hour fifteen minutes, but an hour and thirty five minutes later I received a well done burger. Nothing will help this pitiful excuse for a kitchen. The game we came to watch had been over for ten minutes when we got are food. (Why, if I want a hamburger cooked for less time would it, in any way, help the kitchen to keep it cooking until it is well done). Complete ineptitude with a dreadful attitude served right on top. I will never go back to that armpit. It is not any customers fault if you decide to run a business that is woefully understaffed. Suddenly, burger temperatures are out the window if we get busy, the same with any quality we think we have too, so there. Wow, she sure told me and I will certainly give Stein's, and their extremally obnoxious waitress, the break they deserve. Never go there. One other note worth mentioning. Any other beer that I have tried there, beside the popular IPA, tastes likes filthy keg lines. (Because they never clean the lines). Yuk. The place is tired, so is the waitress, and everyone should give Stein's a long, well deserved break. Perhaps the restrooms are worthy of one star. read more

Steins is fun! The menu (primarily German fare) is short but consists of a robust variety of sausages as well as schnitzel. Thus far, I've tried all of the sausages, finding them each to be good in their own way (the bratwurst is probably my favorite). On my most recent trip, and despite not liking and not asking for it on my plate, I tried the sauerkraut and found that it paired unusually well with the knockwurst. The fries were hot, thin, and crispy, and there were plenty of them. The food is fine, but the main event of Steins is the drink, and Stein's offers a variety of both German and local (draught and bottled) beers. I got the Andechser Dopplebock Dunkel, which had a lovely malty caramelly flavor and went perfectly with the knock and kraut. Ok! I was so excited to see my old friends here and especially Alex. He has so much compassion towards all his patrons it is unbelievable. He always treats us as family and not a customer. I came in here for the fit time in a year and a half. Yes on Sunday it might not really be for kids because we all adults get loud some more than others. I want to start out by saying that the service here was excellent. I didn't get the name of the bartender working but she was super awesome. Really knowledgeable about the beer and also food menu, able to give good recommendations, and just very friendly. Stein's is kind of a German bar and restaurant that serves only wine and beer. I wish they had other liquor options as it would probably make me more likely to come back but they do have a pretty good beer list and the prices are really fantastic. In reference to the German beer hall concept, they serve half liters and liters instead of pints. The food menu has some standard American fare (mozzarella sticks, fries, steak, etc) as well as some German options- sausages, schnitzel, chicken and pork. Prices are again pretty much what I would expect and very reasonable. I decided to get the cheeseburger cooked medium. It came with fries and the waitress brought me some ketchup and mayo for it as well. The burger was pretty Charred outside but very medium inside. It perhaps lacked a little bit of seasoning but once I added the mayo and ketchup, it was a really good burger. Nothing super fancy but just a tasty burger that was perfectly medium on the inside and had the right amount of cheddar on it. It's surprisingly hard to find just a classic, nicely cooked burger in San Francisco so it was nice to get that here. Normally I am not a fan of burgers that are super charred but it worked well here. The fries served with the burger were just ok- not my favorite but okay to munch on with the beer. Overall, this is a very chill spot to grab some good food and have some wine and beer. They also have several TVs and a good variety of table seating and bar seating. I will probably be back but again, I do wish they served alcohol other than just wine and beer. Definitely a solid 4 stars though. read more

Over the years, I've reviewed some random places, whether it be hole in wall joints or obscure neighborhood spots (which are probably the types of places we all frequent the most), but this might be one of the more random ones. Not so much because of Steins itself, but because it's a casual, German-American restaurant/bar...located among Clement's wealth of Asian businesses. "One of these things is not like the other..." Okay, maybe it's really not THAT random to find a place like Steins on Clement, but it was definitely an unexpected discovery when my friend and I walked in to catch the end of the Warriors game. We went from grabbing a beer and getting dinner elsewhere to sticking around to check out their menu, which features a variety of bar bites and German staples. Of the roughly half dozen German dishes listed, both my friend and I decided to try the WIENER SCHNITZEL - Breaded and Fried Pork Tenderloin served with Mashed Potatoes and Salad ($14). Now, I understand that it's traditionally served "naked" (and is usually made of veal over pork), but boy this could have used some sort of gravy/sauce. The taste wasn't bad, and the cut was pretty big, but the pork wasn't exactly juicy and the breading was a bit dry. Plus, it would have added a layer of flavor to an otherwise monotone dish. I mean, even the salad was hardly dressed! As underwhelming as the food may have been though, Steins still has some appeal as a drinking spot or to catch a game. There are a number of tables throughout the place, several TV's, and a nice selection of beers. Their offerings may not be super extensive, but the half dozen German imports are pretty legit. Plus, the steins are pretty sizable for the money...which just might be reason enough on its own to stop off for a drink! I'm just not sure about any of the entrees... In any case, prost! read more

Not too many rowdy people which is great. The waitress did have to bartend as well as serve food, which is a lot to do for one person per 20 people. The food was pretty good. Great neighborhood spot. We typically go to Hamburger Haven just down the street for a casual lunch/dinner meal with the kids, but I think we will have to spread it around now that we have discovered Steins. It is family owned, Austrian born father is in the kitchen working the menu items, mom is there watching the Steelers games, and I think all of their seven kids or almost all of them work shifts in the restaurant. Veronica served us yesterday, and she's one of the kids working at the restaurant. I love supporting a local family-owned establishment. The beer was good, service was incredibly attentive, and the food was good. My daughter had the pork chops, other two kids had burgers with fries, and I had the best grilled cheese with fresh tomato sandwich and fries I've had in a long time.
