I can't say enough about the great experience my family and I had at Steins. The family had a get together to celebrate the life of a dear family member and Steins and the staff really went above and beyond to accommodate our small group. We were able to reserve the outdoor seating area which fit us perfectly, although a little chili. That would be our only critique, the lack of outdoor heaters. The service was immediate, attentive and courteous. The selection of beer and wine was vast and I and the family were pleasantly surprised with all the dishes everyone ordered. The portions are generous and filled the entire plate with a palatable presentation. Thank you Stein for taking care of us from beginning to end. read more

I've been a few times and the staff have always been awesome. The atmosphere inside is super relaxed. Everyone's just there to hang out. The German theme is great and it means that there are beers inside that are drinkable! It's technically a sports bar, but though TVS dominate one of the walls, the sports is not in your face so it's actually pleasant to be inside. I love the atmosphere of the place! The one downside is that the food is a bit hit or miss. My first time I got the spaetzle, which is one of my favorite German dishes. It's a sort of gnocchi/mini dumpling type thing. The spaetzle itself was quite unlike how I've experienced it before: it was too soft and eggy. The flavor was also a bit lacking and it was served with some bottom of the barrel pre-grated cheese. It would be awesome if this dish was revisited with a bit of love, because it's a simple dish but it can be delicious. Maybe serve it with some nicer (fresh grated) cheese and work on the base flavor. I also got the chicken strips most recently which were a bit overdone and dry. On the other hand I got the steak special recently and it was great. Very solidly prepared and tasty! So yeah. All in all, despite a few nit picks about the food, Steins is a great neighborhood bar. So great, in fact, I come from a different neighborhood to hang out! read more

Hands down the nicest bar in the city. Perhaps that's because it is family run and they still close at 11 pm. What I love about Steins other than their awesome beer and sausage offerings (oh and the mashed potatoes which I love) but they are a bar/restaurant that feels a little more like a bar (I hate when it's the other way around). Monday night trivia is always harder than you think it will be but it's all in good fun. Brought a for her night-before-birthday dinner and we played cards games over beers and sausages and had a great time! read more

Amazing place to just relax, grabs some drinks, watch the game, and get yourself a nice ribeye steak with some delicious fries. And that is exactly the special that brought me in the first place. Their $25 special consists of a delicious steak, crispy fries, and a half a liter beer is well worth it! Will definitely recommend. And the service was exceptional. I come here sometimes. It's pretty good. I live a block away so I walk by almost every day. Today I was walking by and saw that they had a special, $20 steak and beer. I'm thinking, I'm not hungry. I usually just eat down the street at the 7-11, sandwich soda chips taquitos and maybe a candy bar. Usually comes out to around the same price . So I figured , why not? "Why not" has gotten me in a lot of trouble . Last time I got into a van, and now I have a scar on my left back side. I haven't been to a doctor yet, but my blood/urine ratio still seams ok. Anyway... this time I walk in, greeted . This is a neighborhood establishment. So I see most of these guys around the block. You know. Like it used to be, at the grocery store , at the bank, at the coffee shop. Anyway, I'm thinking . A $20 dollar steak , is going to be a shitty. I would never eat a steak that costs less than $50. Sorry, that's just how I roll. It was good . It was real good! Had the steak, huge, cooked medium rare to perfection. I got the fruh kolsch, about four of them. Overall an above pleasant experience . New resident to inner Richmond and couldn't be happier with Steins! Just left and it's everything you'd want at a local bar. Insanely friendly staff (we had a lovely reddish-hair woman with an adorable son), great beers and amply-spaced out seating outdoors. I love beer, but not very familiar with belgium style but they have a great 0.3 L for $4 so you're not committed to a huge beer. Although, both beers I had, I loved. I was pleasantly surprised to stop by Steins to watch a Warriors' game. The food is good and walking distance from home. Equally important, the price for food and drinks are reasonable. Definitely on my list for dinner, drinks, lunch and games. I'm happy to support a local bar that serves good food and service. It has not been easy to find fish and chips in the neighborhood but thumbs up for me and their specialty the sausages are worth trying. My friend says the burger and fries are good as well, and I have seen others order chicken schnitzel that looked pretty good. They have a wide selection of beers, but if you prefer wine, especially white, you may want to order something else. I prefer white wine but chose the house red which was more palatable. The House Wines are only $6, so I appreciate this option. The service, was friendly, welcoming, accommodating, and efficient. I appreciated that the waitress, who appeared to be working the entire floor on her own, was always attentive and friendly. She went out of the way to make sure everyone received good service. The only downside is that from the table seating the screens were farther and smaller than ideal, but next time I will definitely sit at the bar. One other suggestion is to have a couple dishes that is not all fried (although I love fried food) but to have a couple sides that are not fried. The only reason I would go to another place is that I cannot have fried food and french fries every game. Maybe add oven-baked potato (not fried) or a baked potato and Asian or regular coleslaw instead of fries. That said, I appreciate this sports bar/restaurant in the neighborhood very much. Came here after Bay to Breakers for brunch. This place was low key and chill, which is exactly what we wanted. Food was outstanding! No bottomless mimosas, but you get a Craft and a full glass for $18. Turns out a craft is a pretty good sized portion! I had a wonderful experience here with my friend with outdoor dining. The fries and bratwurst were great and the prices for the beer and cider were excellent at $6 for 0.5L and $12 for 1L. My coworkers & I really wanted to like Steins. We're always looking for new places to try. A group of us dropped in Friday after work for Happy Hour, but found that their HH menu special ended at 5pm and we didn't get there till 5:30pm. The room was split down the middle half for the bar and half was for sit down dinner. It was a bit awkward at first. Since we had such a large group, we decided to sit down and stay for dinner too. Positives: -$7.50 / Liter Negatives: -The bread was served warm but quickly cooled and became rock hard which lead us to believe that it was reheated -I had the ghoulash which was very dry and tough -My friend found a hair in his sausage which was served on a hamburger bun. This is a great spot in the Richmond District. If you can catch their specials, you should definitely try it. We started coming here when Mandy was working. She is super sweet and we miss her. The staff are always nice. Unfortunately we aren't big beer drinkers but I've heard they have good beers though. Maybe give that a try on your first visit. I have a hard time with the review. Ive been for good stints and mediocre stints. I think the food has good intent but I've had some sub par meals. I think stick to the beer is the way to go. A little hidden German gem in the midst of all things Chinese. We were lured into Steins by their wall of flat screen TVs and the promise of good bier and food and a drinking atmosphere. Sadly, that was not the case. The niners game was so subdued. Primarily because of the way the tables were set up. There was also a feel that you got from the staff that ruckus was not okay-- even during a game like this. We ordered brats and bier. Good German beer is always good German beer. I could really go without the food. We had brats, and mac and cheese and something else very forgettable. Steins has so much potential to be such a great bar. Mozzarella sticks- Nice crispy exterior and cheesy interior. Okay friends, I'll share my fries with you but don't touch my sticks One of the topics of discussion was the color of Steph Curry's eyes. Since Pagan is now gone here is Steins...and I've been itching to try this place. I'm sort of "on the fence" about this place given this was our first time. The space is definitely bright & clean with a long bar off one side of the place offering a minimal, but decent choice of beers. The food we had was another story though... The PLUS: The fried shrimp appetizers and the grilled green onions/asparagus plates were the only items we enjoyed. Everything else we had was not worth ever ordering again. The MINUSes: - House Mac & Cheese: You'd think by looking at the name of this item that they made their own from scratch (like Q's does down Clement street). Nope, it's straight up Kraft macaroni & cheese that supposedly they add their own touches to. What were the special touches anyway? I only saw a parsley garnish on top, really? Don't order it, you'll be disappointed. - Fish & Chips: I got a plate of what looked like "Ore Ida" brand crinkle cut fries and 3 pieces of heavily greasy fried fish. Most definitely not fresh and for sure from frozen. They must've not fried it right because if this was fried at the right oil temperature the fish wouldn't have been that greasy. It wasn't even blotted dry from after the frying before they put it on my plate. YUCK. - Sausage sandwich (from the bar menu): Meat was barely lukewarm and almost cold when it arrived. WTH? Big disappointment. - Cheeseburger: You can immediately tell it was cooked from a frozen patty. The whole thing was just ordinary and could make it way better at home. I do give props to the friendly server though...BUT the food we specifically had needs a big overhaul. I hope they work out their kinks with the menu and how the food is prepared. Will be checking out future reviews of this place to see if there is positive changes on the food before we might visit this place again. read more

As you enter the place you find out really fast that it's a very interesting vibe, this place is a cross between a sports bar and a German restaurant, definitely a very unique feel. The waitress tonight was very attentive, we got the weiner schnitzel, the warwurst and the smoked brotwurst, the entree comes with 2 sides which the waitress gladly swapped for other ones that seemed a better option for us, PLUS POINTS FOR THAT!!! We also got a .5 L of the pear cider, a .3 L for the beer special which happened to be a lager (btw the beer special was $3 for a .3L $5 for a .5L and $9 for a 1L, that's crazy, that alone is worth coming back). The schnitzel was superb, it was perfectly fried and served with lemon as it should be, the sausages were ok, maybe I was just not impressed by the quality of the sausages. Anyhow, this is a great place to have a 1L mug, watch a game and get some decent grub, I will definitely be back! read more

This place is a solid spot. For one, it's located in a very convenient area of the richmond district (Clement). Once we got to the restaurant, they have a "beer of the day" which is sold at a discount, I'd recommend getting the liter of that, but they have a very good selection of beers anyway. The food isn't that expensive, granted I was comparing it to Süppenkuche, so maybe that was a bit unfair. In my opinion, the food isn't as good, but it's also not as expensive. All in all, if you want some good German beer and not have to pay a stupid $20-something at Süppenkuche, GO TO STEINS! read more

Not as good as I expected. When my friends and I first walked in, we were greeted by an air of awkwardness where we stood there for a few minutes (we could of walked out with no one noticing...and maybe we should have). The bar tender finally said something and waved us towards an empty table. We were given a menu and ordered soon after. I wasn't very hungry and didn't want anything fried or anything fatty (haha this is a German restaurant who am I kidding?) so I went with the rainbow trout. My bf and friend got something with pork and beer. Anyway, the food came out and seriously it looked like a plate that I would have put together if I was at a crappy buffet and the only thing that looked edible was the fish and salad and that is why my plate looked empty. My trout was cooked flat. Probably used a flatiron or something. It was also very small, fit for a tiny kitten. Beer apparently was really good, but they aren't the ones brewing it. There was only one waitress that night but she wasn't bad. Although one more person wouldn't hurt...and no, the bartender doesn't count. read more

Perhaps most importantly, this is a family-run business. Alex, Mandy, Phil and the rest of the family all are friendly, warm, caring and genuine. This is one of my fav spots in the inner Richmond -- I go at least once a week. The food is consistently good and the service is great! I know this is a German spot but the burger and club sandwich is so good that I have a hard time swaying from that. Note that the burger isn't great because it's unique (like Nopa or Spruce) but because it tastes like a homemade burger. As I live in the city, I can't grill myself so it's great to have a spot I can go to get that taste and is relatively inexpensive. And then there is the beer. German beer. Enough said. If you're lucky they will have the Spaten Oktoberfest on tap as they try to get that in as much as possible (it sells out quickly, as you can imagine) -- if they have it, get two. Awesome family team of bartenders and servers (and cooks!) in a pseudo-sports bar with a spirited dinner crowd (especially if the game is on - which, if it is, go early to catch a seat at the bar). Best bowl of goulash I've had - filled with deliciously tender beef and a flavorful paprika and potato base. Burger is solid for a fair price. Fish n chips are satisfying and they have a dinner special that rotates every so often and is always a good deal. Brunch offerings include a generously portioned lox plate and a bottomless mimosa steal. Beer selection is diversely German with an IPA standby. No Happy Hour but you get a great deal with their liter specials that rotate every month or so. Go just for the beer or find something on the menu you'd like to check out - you'd be supporting a great crew! read more

Came here to watch Game 5 of the World Series. Got there about an hour before the game, managed to get a good booth on the wall and a perfect view of the game. I ordered brats with sauerkraut and mash with a nice big 32oz Dunkelweiss to wash it down. it would not be my last. Great place to watch the game. Modern environment and great German food. read more

This is why I love Yelp! We were visiting the Golden Gate Park and wanted lunch. It was a great walk through a nice neighborhood. The amazing Bar Tender who did it all! She waited on us - changed TV Channels for patrons - bussed the tables all with an unbelievable ease. We got the bratwurst sandwich and Wienerschnitzel sandwich they were cooked properly and oh by the way the French fries were hot! I know it should be a given the fries would be hot but far too after the are not! Highly recommend this off the beaten path location. read more

Stopped by on our way back after a short hike across lands end. Great food and beer selection, just what we needed. Tried the pilsner urquell after a really long time. The service was fabulous.
