I was super excited to try Hook Fish and finally got the chance! We came by for Saturday lunch and luckily came early enough at opening to avoid a line and grabbed a seat on the patio. There's no indoor seating but there is an outdoor parket with some tables. I opted for the grilled fish of the day plate which was rockfish and it was super fresh and delicious! Loved the flaky, tender rockfish that was grilled to perfection and it paired well with rice, black beans, pico and a slaw. The spicy aioli gave it a nice creamy touch but it was the carrot habanero sauce on the table that really boosted the flavor and we all loved their house-made hot sauce! I also tried my friend's fish burrito which was great as well. It's essentially the same components on the plate, just wrapped in a house-made tortilla. Fish and chips are delish! Their guacamole and chips are tasty too for an appetizer that's on so many menus. I was surprised to see it on their menu, but it was fresh and yummy and so were the chips. It's a popular spot, and seating is limited so you need to be willing to pull-up a curb or find a spot to stand to enjoy your meal. Takeout is an option but the fish and chips would be best enjoyed right as they come out. There is not much interaction with staff except to order your food and drinks. Hidden gem near the beach and such a great spot for a quality seafood meal, whether you want takeout or to eat there. It is in a convenient beach area location with nearby street parking, although the limit is only one hour. The ordering process is very simple. You walk in, place your order at the counter on the left, and then wait to be called when your food is ready for pickup. Water is also available right next to the pickup area. It is an easy and straightforward setup that makes the whole experience feel casual and stress-free. There is outdoor seating only and no indoor seating, so keep in mind that it can get a little breezy because of the beach weather. The menu offers a great variety of fish dishes, including burritos, plates, tacos, fish and chips, and more. We both ordered plates, and even though the portions looked small at first, they were actually very filling and kept us full for the rest of the day. I also really appreciated that the sauces came on the side. For the poke, tuna is the only fish option, but it was delicious and worked perfectly. We also ordered a side salad for $7 to add some fiber, and surprisingly, it was one of the best things we had. I could honestly see myself coming back just for the salad. Hook Fish is on many must-try SF restaurant lists, so naturally, I had pretty high expectations. But unfortunately, the food did not live up to the hype. Came by on an early evening during a weekday so the wait was only around 10-15 minutes after ordering. I ordered the poke tacos ($20 for an order of 2) and a pineapple mint agua fresca ($3.50). Seating is all outdoors and quite limited, so we took our food to-go and ate it in the car. The pineapple mint agua fresca was super disappointing. All the agua frescas were already prepped and poured out into cups which in hindsight should've been a red flag.... It came with no ice and was barely colder than room temperature. The drink was quite pulpy but strangely had no pineapple flavor whatsoever. Ended up tasting like lukewarm minty water. Now, onto the poke tacos: These are definitely the priciest tacos I've had ($10 per taco?!?) so the flavor and quality had to deliver to justify these prices. But they were just... okay. Would've preferred a lime wedge over the lemon wedge they gave. The albacore tuna was fresh and didn't taste fishy. The pico de gallo and slaw were pretty standard, although I didn't taste the pickled flavor from the slaw. I also couldn't taste much of the spicy aioli, but that's probably because I chose to have it on top instead of on the side. I'd say that the overall presentation and preparation of these tacos could've been more thoughtful. For instance, the tacos got quite soggy from the pico. It would definitely help to have 2 tortillas instead of 1. The avocado came in a chunk on top of each taco and kept slipping out when eating. I think it would've been better to cut the avocado into smaller slices instead of one chunk. Small details like these made it not as enjoyable of an experience to eat. Ultimately, these tacos were not worth the steep price. Perhaps their fish and chips are better in terms of both flavor and value, but I unfortunately don't see myself returning in the near future. read more

Introduced Hook Fish to boyfriend because he's always searching for the best fish and chips and Hook Fish knocked theirs out of the park. It was halibut on the day that we went which is a nice meaty fish. The batter was the super star! It was so thin but shattered perfectly. The fish was buttery and tender. Would have again and again! We also had the tacos and the sandwich. Both were good but missed the mark just a tad bit. The fish on the tacos was a little overdone and the sandwich was wet. The bun was super soggy and couldn't really be picked up, perhaps because of the amount of slaw. Still good flavors though. We were lucky to snag a table outside but wow, Hook Fish could use some more umbrellas for these sunny days. Had visited years ago when they first opened and thought it was underwhelming and decided to give it a try recently on a nice sunny weekend afternoon. The line was short to order, but the wait for food was an hour @2:30pm. At least the hour estimate was on point and we did indeed receive our order at one hour. They give you a buzzer so assume you can walk around. Lots of folks waiting outside so you will have to fight for a seat. You're super close to the beach so you have options. We just got a fish burrito to share since we couldn't wait an actual hour to eat anything and went to the taco truck in the meantime. Catch of the day was rockfish which I typically enjoy. There was way too much rice for how much fish was actually in the burrito, which you could barely taste. Wouldn't be able to tell you what fish it was or whether it tasted fresh - guess it does since it didn't taste fishy. Glad there was some freshness with the cabbage and radish, etc. but the whole thing just tasted bland. Even with the hot sauce, which wasn't very spicy, still bland. Didn't finish my portion since so much of it was just rice and tortilla. I'm literally confused because it can't be that hard to season, and why are so many people waiting an hour for this? Once again underwhelmed - maybe other dishes are better? Was initially going to get fish n chips as well but we pivoted to interim taco truck for the wait. Very crowded on a Thursday afternoon around noon, but worth the wait! Casual spot with limited outdoor seating. Order at the register inside, then pick up food at the counter facing the sidewalk. I recommend taking the food to go and sitting at the bookstore across the street or walking the two short blocks down to the beach. I tried the fish and chips and ceviche. The fish and chips were wonderful, the fish tasted fresh and tender, and the batter was salty with a good crunch. You do have to open the box pretty quickly otherwise the heat from the fries makes the fish batter soggy. The fries are a large portion and seasoned. They are on the thicker side, which is my preference, but would disappoint those who like a thinner, crispier fry. Fish comes with fresh tartar sauce, and you can ask for ketchup and hot sauce. The ceviche has calamari and what appeared to be salmon in it, served over tortilla chips. I enjoyed the strong citrus flavor, but it's mostly chips. I've always wanted to try this place, but every time I come, the wait is so long! This time, we planned to come here and ordered ahead of time. Definitely recommend this because it still took 30 minutes for our order to be ready. The best item was the 3 piece fish and chips ($23), which were super crispy, flaky, and tender. It's the best I've ever had, but the fish was pretty greasy. I was also underwhelmed by the grilled fish of the day burrito ($18) because it lacked a lot of flavor and the texture was overtaken by the rice. We ordered: -- guacamole + chips ($10): standard, & went well with the bottle of carrot habanero salsa that graces every table. -- Dungeness crab cakes ($19): sitting on a bed of greens were two of the saddest, tiniest cakes; think no bigger than half dollar coins. No lump pieces, no creamy deliciousness, just shreds that didn't distinctly taste of crab. I'm in love with the poke plate here and go out of my way, wait an hour in line, and eat in the blazing sun for it. Keep in mind there's always a line and they're accurate with their estimates. The seating is hard to obtain as there is only a few tables outside which makes it difficult to enjoy the ambiance and environment they set up. The batter has no significant flavor , the fish was soggy after getting served. The structure didn't hold up with their thick tartar sauce. The crab cake is more of a crab coin. There was some flavoring in it - but very disappointed in the price:size of the crab cake. For two coins and a side salad, I would recommend skipping this. I had a previous review of 3 stars. I went to the business and tried again. This just confirms the 3-star review stands. Place was busy as expected. Sat outside without patio heaters as expected. The fish of the day is rockfish. It's a neutral fish that really doesn't have flavor of its own but instead, takes on flavor of the seasoning used to cook it. The fish and chips had a nice crisp ro it and the fries were crispy. Unfortunately, that is where the good ends as the fried fish was bland along with the unsalted and bland fries. So the table condiments were the stars as the malt vinegar was bland and missing it's tartness and tang. One just wonders how long this vinegar sat around. The fish and chip dinner was good with the habanero carrot hot sauce and ketchup eaten with fries. We also had the plate dinner with rockfish. It was grilled nicely but unfortunatley, I seasoned and bland as well. Again, the habanero carrot hot sauce was needed to consume the dish. As for the cooking, the rockfish for the fish and chips was a bit overcooked and had a mushy texture to it. The grilled fish was cooked OK but the rice was mushy (overcooked with too much water) and the black beans were a bit undercooked and a bit hard. So to summarize, some things haven't changed (long wait times, busy place, no patio heaters, under seasoned/bland food). Some things were good like presentation of food and crispyness if the friend foods. Some things need improvement. Kitchen management (overcooked, undercooked components of the dinner, under seasoning of food). And the really bad of this visit is poor kitchen management. Place ran out of chips during dinner rush. The more I try it, the more I appreciate Hook Fish. It really is some of the freshest seafood you can find and the portions are rather large. Although I'm still not too crazy for fish and chips, after trying other places around the city, this is the best you can get. But my favorite dishes are the red curry with salmon and the poke plate. The red curry is made like a Japanese curry with added thai red curry paste. Slightly coconutty and buffed with potatoes and carrots, it's such a comforting dish. It's a rotating soup though, so you might not find it all the time. The poke plate comes with two large scoops of tuna, rice, avocados, black beans, pico de gallo, and cabbage. It's super refreshing and I just feel healthier by eating it. The tuna chunks are large and perfectly seasoned in sesame oil and soy sauce. Of course I still drown my dish in half a bottle of their habanero carrot sauce, but that's just how I do it. Hook Fish totally impressed us when I brought my boyfriend there since he's always on the hunt for amazing fish and chips. The special that day was halibut, which turned out to be thick, flaky, and really satisfying. Definitely something we'd order again without hesitation. We also tried the tacos and the fish sandwich. They both had good flavor, but neither was quite as memorable as the fish and chips. The fish in the tacos was slightly overcooked, and the sandwich ended up being pretty messy because the bun got soaked from all the slaw. It practically fell apart when trying to pick it up. Still, the seasoning and overall taste were enjoyable. We managed to grab an outdoor table, which felt lucky because the place gets busy. That's just my nice way of saying you're about to wait 10 minutes for some of the best food in Ocean Beach. Located a few blocks away from the beach, it's a prime spot to grab lunch before catching the breeze. The poke is lightly seasoned, the flavor is carried heavily in the quality of the fish. The line of folks snaking out the door, waiting to place orders, was exceeded only by the swarm of people waiting to receive their food. Tables - all al fresco - turn over regularly so what looked like it might be an impossible situation in which to sit and enjoy lunch proved not to be so. On this day, the sole problem was trying to dodge the sun, an unusual Sunset District issue to encounter. Hook Fish is no Mission District taqueria. They're a casual, fresh seafood restaurant featuring a Mexican-themed menu with some asides into other fish-centric dishes (e.g. Fish & Chips). Opting for an order of 2 fish tacos, I went with that day's seafood offering (it changes day to day but an additional charge can get you a different seafood than what is currently featured) and received open-face tacos mounded so high with ingredients that the sole way to consume them was with a knife and fork. The ingredients proved fresh and tasty, enhanced by adding some of the orange, homemade hot sauce that sits at each table. The offering - which I accompanied with a refreshing watermelon drink - was satisfying and filling with a good volume of fish and reminded me more of a good offering from Pacific Catch than anything I'd find in the Mission. If what you want is fresh seafood, reasonably priced, and topped by a whole lot of California-fresh ingredients Hook Fish is a worthy choice. Arriving after 1 pm, I got the lay of the land regarding the menu and how to order. Spotting a bench table we each had the fish of the day with some nachos and chips as well as a side of pico de gallo. Overall, I actually liked the Petrale sole even though I was unsure of how it would taste as I normally would not order a blackened fish filet. My perfect weekday on the hottest day of the year: hot yoga, sunset at ocean beach, and walk over to Hook Fish for a bite. I've heard many great things about Hook Fish and finally came by. Stood in line for 15 minutes and waited another 15 for the food to be ready. I was expecting a longer wait considering how everyone and their mom was here! I ordered the poke tacos and a friend ordered guacamole and chips and fish n chips. Poke was fresh af and the taco was soggy af but it doesn't matter when the poke is the star of the show. Guac was also incredibly fresh and delicious. But trust, the secret is in that aioli sauce. It's soooo good. There were no tables available so we sat at one of the planters and ate. Was I full on malasana pose (deep squat) while eating? Yes. No tables available so I did what I had to do, and the food was still delicious. This spot is super ideal after a sunny beach day because the vibes are there!! I'd say come prepared to wait if you are coming on a good weather day and definitely get that aioli sauce. read more

Some of the best fish and chips I've ever tried! Batter was super light and crispy, and complemented the most tender, flaky fish incredibly well. Make sure to add a dab of tartar sauce to each bite as well. Nothing too notable about the fries, though there were plenty of them. It took over an hour for our food to be ready (we went on a weekend), but it was well worth it! Another Monday lunch date with my son and we've both been wanting to try their fish and chips. People at work talk highly of this place bc it's close to work and many live in the area or close by. We got there as soon as they opened and there was already a line. So I told him what I wanted and grabbed a seat at the parklet out front. You are by the ocean don't can get a bit cold. I can see it being awesome on a nice day in the city though. Plenty of seats outside, no indoor seating. The food came out piping hot. Nice flaky fresh fish with a nice batter. I love me some malt vinegar and they have it every table. Every was so nicely seasoned and fresh from the fryer. Probably the best fish and chips offered in the city. If not the best, definitely top 5 for sure. And not bad for the bay area. I recommend the fish tacos at this restaurant as well. Very fast. It's SF so most food is higher than normal. Service was very good and definitely return for it as they will take care of you. Staff was friendly and advised those in line the wait time to receive food. Good was good but not exceptional. Enjoyed the fish & chips and ceviche the most. Mango Pineapple Agua Fresca didn't taste like much, Watermelon was better. Grilled fish and sides were just OK.
