I'm glad to say those expectations were met. Pearl doesn't have a prix fixe menu, so we got to choose what we wanted for our dinner. We ordered -Glass of wine - recommended by your waitress, who seemed really knowledgeable with their drink selection -Acme bread and butter -Hamachi crudo - really yummy! This dish had strawberries and almonds, which we thought paired really well with the fish -Scallops - loved the corn that was infused into this dish -Hangar steak - steak was cooked to a perfect medium-rare. -Raspberry sorbet - I usually prefer ice cream over sorbet, but this sorbet was very good. It came with a shiso granita that my boyfriend LOVED, as he is a huge shiso fan. While we've tried several other one-start Michelin restaurants, Pearl has become one of our favorites! We started with the Acme bread and butter, along with an order of hush puppies. The hush puppies weren't my personal favorite, but our cousins loved them. The four of us shared the the meal family-style, which was the perfect way to sample a variety of dishes. We ordered the roasted cauliflower, halibut crudo, seared scallops, swordfish, and the uniquely named Handkerchief. Despite the unusual name, the Handkerchief was the standout of the night! It's a pappardelle pasta with white Bolognese and Grana Padano cheese. It was such a simple dish, yet incredibly comforting and packed with flavor. It was easily my favorite. My second favorite was the perfectly seared scallops, though honestly, every dish we tried was excellent. To finish, we shared the buttermilk shortcake for dessert. The biggest surprise was that the "shortcake" was actually a buttery biscuit, and somehow it worked beautifully. It was the perfect sweet ending to a wonderful meal. I had a killer dinner here, but it's the kind of thing that has to be rare, based on cost. It was Valentine's Night, and The Wife was out of town. I was in the city nearby and searched for neighborhood restaurants, when I saw Pearl. It was just 5 o'clock, and I thought maybe I could sit at the bar. I was correct, but I had to wait for a space to open. No problem, they had little tables set up outside for those of us waiting, who ordered cocktails. I got a pearl martini, which was decent, but a little sweet. It was my first martini with an onion, and will be my last. I got a standard martini next, which was very good. They called my name, and I sat at the far left end of the bar, with a view into the kitchen, and where all the drinks came out. Plenty of fast but controlled activity to watch. I ordered the crudo for an appetizer, and the scallops for the entree. Absolutely fantastic. The scallops had white beans and some kind of small crunchy flakes, and it was not only a great variety of flavors, but textures as well. I got a side of bread, to mop up all the liquid left over -could t get enough of that taste. Along with this I had a glass of sangiovese, and then a glass of grillo. The bartender (Kim, I think?) had a very nice way of bantering while dealing with the high volume of drinks being ordered. Finally, intended with a Valentine's cheesecake and coffee. Went during dinner rush hour and service was good and accommodating. With a party of four, we ordered the Handkerchief Pasta ($27), Hanger Steak $34, Spaghetti with Clams ($?). Pearl is a real gem in Richmond. I'm often in the Richmond district and pass Pearl many times. I'd always been curious, considering it's always bustling inside and outside. So, the companion suggested we dine here. We arrived in the early evening. It's a popular spot, so reservations are a must. To start, we shared the Chips and Dip. The dip was super creamy, with a rich, savory flavor from the clams. The chips were on the thinner side but not as crispy as I'd like. I found a couple of them a bit soggy. Both my companion and I got pasta; he had the Handkerchief, and I had the Bucatini. I had a bite of his, and it was creamy and tasty! I enjoyed my pasta; it was well-cooked, flavorful with a touch of spice, and a significant portion! We both took ours to go. Came here for our anniversary, and I kind of regret coming... Steak Taretare: 5/5 Handkerchief Pasta: 5/5 Bucatini: 2/5. There was WAY too much lemon juice. Every bite tasted like those sour candies you'd eat as a kid that destroy your taste buds. The pasta texture was great and I liked the crunchiness which made it tolerable. Service: 1/5. I was particularly disappointed by the service. The hostess did way more than any of the servers did. No one gave us water for 10 minutes after sitting down. No one ever asked us how our food was. My husband asked our server if the bucatini was supposed to be this sour, in which she just said thats probably how it was supposed to be and left. They even took 15 minutes just to come back with our check despite the restaurant not being THAT busy by the end. Our water jug was empty for 80% of the night and no one refilled our water despite several servers walking by us and even when they gave us our bill. The hostess was the one who noticed and gave us water even though it wasn't even their job to. Even the korean dessert shop we went to after, where one guy ran the entire service of the cafe, spared the time to ask us how the food was and took the initiative to fill our water despite a full house... We had a great Valentine's Day dinner here! Seriously so impressed with how prepared the restaurant was for the holiday rush. Our server, Jake, was awesome - super friendly, attentive, and funny. The team around him was also great, ensuring to check in frequently to refresh our cocktails (*highly recommended the Pearl Martini) and see what we might need. We started with the off-menu special: a truffle arancini with a chili oil base. SO good. Then we followed that with the hanger steak and squash triangoli before ending the night with the pistachio tiramisu (and a surprise chocolate pudding, courtesy of Jake!). My husband and I came in for dinner hoping to check if there were any available tables. We didn't even get a chance to properly enter the restaurant before being stopped. There was no hostess greeting us at the entrance. A manager (or possibly a supervisor) was speaking with another guest or employee -- it wasn't clear. Instead of acknowledging us with a simple "Hello" or "We'll be with you shortly," she put her hand out in front of us and said, "Stand here. You have to stand here," without any greeting or explanation. The tone was unnecessarily rude and dismissive. When the hostess eventually seated us at the bar, I calmly mentioned that the way she had spoken to us felt very rude. Her response was, "If you don't like it, you can go to another restaurant." I dine out frequently and have visited many establishments over the years. This is the first time I've experienced such unprofessional and hostile treatment. In my opinion, anyone working in hospitality -especially in a restaurant that positions itself at a higher level -should treat guests with basic courtesy and respect. My boyfriend and I came here for a birthday dinner, we were looking for something a little nicer and romantic that wouldn't break the bank, and this fit the bill! The space gave off a cozy cafe meets New Orleans, meets Main Street USA vibe, that may sound a little all over the place, but it was great. We started with the gnocco fritto, this sort of bineget dish, and tuna tatiki crisp, then went on to the handkerchief pasta and duck schnitzel. The food was all really delicious! The duck schnitzel is what sold me on coming here in the first place, and it did not disappoint. I love both duck and schnitzel but had never tried them in combined form, but boy did it make for something rich and flavorful. The handkerchief pasta was also a hit, I can see why everyone orders it. To drink we ended up getting two different cocktails each. We tasted a few of the wines, but didn't love any of them, so we were happy to stick with their unique and lower abv cocktails. My favorite of the cocktails I had was surprisingly to me, the pearl martini! I'm not normally into martinis that aren't of the espresso variety, but one of the servers was raving about how good and different it was, so I gave it a try, and I'm glad I did! Even just writing this review a few months later has me wanting to go back for more! The only slight downside to dining here was that there wasn't anything that great about the service. We didn't interact with the same server throughout our meal, and they didn't check in that often either. There also wasn't any acknowledgement of the special occasion we were celebrating even though it was a question when booking the reservation. Not a big deal, but we'd had some pretty great customer service run-ins recently while celebrating special occasions. One of the more memorable meals I had in 2025! From beginning to end, the food came out with massive flavor and care. The caesar salad was one of the best weve ever had. One of our dishes came out cold (likely fired first before my table's other guest), so I sent it back (which is a rarity). I had a great experience at this restaurant with my friends! The drinks were tasty and the food was delicious. It also has a charming decor inside. It's a perfect spot for a date night. I enjoyed the seared scallops and my friends had the pastas. Try to sit inside if you can. Since I'm not too familiar with European wines, the really nice waitress had some suggestions for a nice sunny afternoon and let me try. We missed the mark on a sparkling red, but the Corvina (I think that's what it was called) landed. The chips and dip were great - the smoked trout on top was perfect. What a fun little neighborhood restaurant! Felt like a true gem for residents of the Richmond District and a cute spot for a romantic date night. The food was truly outstanding! To start, we ordered the chicory caesar and the acme bread & butter. We absolutely demolished the caesar - it was one of the best I've had in the city and I would easily come back just to eat it again. For our entrees, we ordered the handkerchief pasta, bavette steak, and spaghetti with manila clams. The flavor of the grana padano cheese on the handkerchief pasta brought me right to Italy. The bavette steak was cooked perfectly and the manila clams were a hit, even for someone who's not a huge fan of clams! The bill came out to $150 including tip, which was well worth it for a birthday dinner for 3 people. Highly recommend reservations, they seem to book fast on Friday nights and I can imagine walk-ins are tough to come by given the restaurant is fairly small. While visiting my daughter in SFO, she brought me to this restaurant specifically to try their gluten-free white bolognese pasta. I was not disappointed. The service was excellent, and the place had a nice vibe. The other dishes looked amazing, but we did not try them. I did have the olive appetizer, which was fantastic, and we shared the chocolate panna cotta--again, very good. Even if you are not gluten-free like my daughter and I, this is a great place to try. Pearl will be on my list on my next trip. read more
