The beef cheek agnolottis were so fun and tender with a hearty sauce. But my goodness ... the porcini pizza was NOT it. When it originally came out, it smelled like I was in the Tenderloin and it was really hard to get over that. Once it cooled down, the smell tampered down but the taste was really "funky". We ate it, but the choices were: 1) eat terrible smelling pizza or 2) lukewarm and still not great tasting pizza. Sorry, but it wasn't a great end to our meal. :( read more

I came in with a table of 6. We ordered 4 appetizers and 6 entrees. I don't recommend this spot for people with big appetites, the bill goes up pretty quickly. The food is good but everything we tried is not worth a drive to the city for. Appetizers The pane a pala with the +$9 ricotta was delicious. The calamari was also tasty. The Chicken Liver Crostini was a big hit for the table. Many of us said it tasted like Vietnamese Pate. I'd pass on the Fresh-Cured Anchovies Nostrani. It wasn't anything crazy flavor wise. Came here for my friend's farewell dinner recently! [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance inside is lovely and I enjoyed the lighting as well as how the interior was decorated. It was very vibe-y inside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service was also good - we had a reservation but had come a little early so we waited by the bar as they prepared our table. I had one of the pizzas, and two of my friends ordered pizza as well and my other friend got a pasta. All the food was delicious! We also got a white wine to pair with the food. The waitress was very kind to us as well even though we spent a while deciding what we wanted to order. I've been coming here for over a decade, and love it. Delfina and Cottogna are my two favorite Italian restaurants in SF. I always get the spaghetti and the trippa alla Fiorentina. The spaghetti is incredibly flavorful, the taste of tomatoes is intense and bright. I wouldn't be surprised if they boil the pasta in tomato water because the flavor is so ubiquitous and deep. I get that not everyone eats tripe, but if you do (or are offal curious), the Trippa alla Fiorentina is one of the best dishes in the city. The tripe is braised and tender, such that the umami flavor is very deep. It's covered in some crunchy bits (don't know if they're bread crumbs or some meat), which gives the dish a wonderful contrasting of textures. Everything else I got was great (radicchio salad, anchovy on toast), but these two dishes are must-haves for me and bring me back year after year. read more

Finally came into this famous neighborhood namesake, and it did not disappoint! Friendly service was a plus. Every dish we ordered, including the $86 short rib, came out room temperature like it had been sitting out for a while. If food was this temperature at home I would reheat it in the microwave. We also had dishes including simple pasta dishes come way after tables that came after us. The upsell rubs me the wrong way. They call salmon roe "steelhead caviar". It's not caviar. I get an 8 ounce jar of salmon roe from the Russian market for $4. Caviar is obviously much more expensive. steelhead and sturgeon sound similar and I wonder if they thought people would be confused. the dish said it came with lemon but my girlfriend afterward said she didn't detect any such that they charged $29 for pasta, butter, and salmon roe. Really solid meal. Everything was super tasty and well cooked. Casual and a bit loud inside. Good ventilation (no smokiness from the pizza/etc oven), so you don't have to worry about your clothes and hair smelling afterward. Short ribs ($88) was a huge portion (def 2-3 ppl), and was served tomahawk style with a gigantic bigger-than-the-platter bone. Super tasty and tender so a steak knife is unnecessary. Comes with a side of cheesy potatoes which were tasty but some pieces still had the raw crunch to it, so I wouldn't necessarily order that side on its own. Bread ($7) with ricotta ($9) was nice and fluffy--think focaccia without the oiliness. I'd def get again, but it would be excellent if it were served warm. Octopus was tasty and parts were nice and tender. But parts were too charred and overall it was tasty but over salted--it could've used more celery to balance out the salt. Hubby didn't mind at all and was happy with the dish. We also got a pasta dish which was nicely prepared, as expected. Daughter got her regular plain pasta with butter, which she ate up happily. They were, every one of them, so helpful, professional, and fun! They guided us through ordering with a profound knowledge of each of the dishes. Very impressive. I am still dreaming about the food. Seriously, this place gives Flour & Water, The Pasta Supply Company and Perbacco all a run for their money when it comes to pasta. The Pappardelle with Sugo is to die for. Perfectly homemade al dente pasta paired with an amazingly tasty meat sauce. The Agnolotti stuffed with Pork, Beef and Chicken Liver is so good I just wanted to take it home with me and keep it forever. The butter sauce the pasta pillows were swimming in was sublime. The salads are HUGE. We shared the Chicory Salad with Prosciutto and Walnuts and the Monterey Bay Calamari with White Beans and Arugula. There was not a single piece of either left when we were done. One Antipasti would have been enough, but I am happy we managed to work our way through two of them. The house made Focaccia with olive oil alone is worth a trip to Delfina for. It is soft, fresh and perfectly salty and chewy. Yum. It is not an inexpensive evening, but it is well worth the splurge. I will be returning much sooner this time. Favorite restaurant in the city! Interiors are very modern and inviting. Somehow the acoustics just work so that the place feels very lively but you can still hear the person across from you. Definitely recommend making a reservation because it is a very popular place on the weekends. We made a very last minute reservation this time so had to wait for our table, but we were able to wait at the bar. The bartender was very friendly and gave great recommendations for drinks. Tried some new things this visit and we were absolutely not disappointed. We tend to find the seasoning and freshness of ingredients at Delfina exactly to our taste. This time we ordered: Koginut Squash Sformato: a squash puree flan served with a creamy cheese, chestnuts, and balsamic vinaigrette. So many textures at once and so delicious! Bottom Line: With SF 7% mandate already inflating costs, Delfina's premium pricing feels especially out of touch with what you actually receive. We came for dinner on restaurant week! A very popular restaurant, a reservation is definitely recommended. The restaurant itself is large with elegant decorations and art. All of the tables are placed very close together for a bustling atmosphere. Our server was quick to seat us and take our orders. The food came out a little slower but understandably so considering how busy it was. For restaurant week, I tried the truffle gnocchi for my main and panna cotta for dessert. Some of the best pasta I've had!! Be ready for higher prices and I wouldn't say the pasta is super shareable like suggested, but does work if you have a handful of plates to share. A go to early dinner spot for business meetings when I'm meeting folks in San Francisco. Everything on the menu I've tried has been delicious. The cocktails are yummy. I think I always end up with a spritz served in a fish bowl sized glass. The service is very friendly. My go to is the whole fish. It changed based on what's fresh and available. For sides, I usually order the beans and a seasonal vegetable. Corn was still in season in August during my last visit. Delicious with an elote seasoning. Panna cotta is a must for dessert. Came here for my birthday a week ago. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place has changed a bit since the last time I was here about 10 years ago. They updated it without over-modernizing it so it still has some of it's rustic charm.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The good: Loved the cocktail list. Had something citrusy with gin and it was a perfect way to start the evening. The fabulous: Anchovies Nostrani. Boccarones (white anchovies) served with olive oil, diced red onion, and cucumber. Just delicious. Perfect with an order of their house-made foccacia and a glass of Arneis. Grilled Monterey Bay calamari. I believe this is one of their classic dishes. I think it was the same style I had a decade ago and it has stood the test of time. Tender calamari, beautiful little beans, savory perfect sauce. I was almost sad to have to share it. Langherino Bottone. This is a circular button (bottone) shaped pasta that is filled with langherino cheese, corn, and chanterelle mushrooms. Earthy fruity chanterelles combined with a subtle sweet crunch of corn to create delicate delicious perfect pillows. Incredible. The not so great: Tropea Onion Pie. Love the components of this pie. Guanciale and onions but god DAMN this pizza was dry! I get that it's a sauceless pizza but maybe brush it or drizzle it with olive oil. Even an infused olive oil would be nice. For the price point that people are paying, $25 is an overwhelming price for something that eats more like a cracker with a thin piece of pork jowl on top and a pool of onions. Cappellacci Due Cardi. This was a stuffed pasta with cheese, cardoons, and artichoke. The pasta itself was delicious but with a hefty price tag of $32 dollars for about 8 fairly small pieces of pasta. On the plate next to the pasta were thin slices of artichoke. Several of the pieces that were on my plate were way too chewy, hard, and inedible and for the price you're paying that's just not ok. Overall, we still had a lovely time. Our server was very sweet and took very good care of us. When an establishment sets the scene with intention from the moment you step inside its doors, a wait is worthwhile. From the moment we stepped into Delfina the kind faces and excited energy enticed us to wait the 25-45 minute wait to sit down and have our dinner. We were told we could order a starter and enjoy some drinks by the bar which we did happily. With a simple menu, the choice for me was very clear as to how I needed to start, The monterey calamari. It was so incredible in flavor and so full of colors, I loved their use of beans adding texture to a dish that more foods definitley need. I don't drink so I always look for something nice with my meals, so 0% abv section of the menu is always a plus for me, but even more so, I love a good sparkling water. Agua De Peidra is my favorite sparkling water, and I'd come back to Delfina just to drink some with the calamari. However I did order and eat more, and this is where my relationship with Delfina shifted. When I look for pizza i have such a high expectation for flavor and texture. The second there is a soggy part of my pizza I become beyond dissapointed and it ruins the meal entirely. Not in my pictures I did order the speghetti Promodoro, which was only okay. Second time here and definitely had a better experience than the first time (you can see my review from 12/16). Service was excellent (Grace). Food was delicious. Water kept filled. And everyone who we encountered was polite. We got two pastas (tagliatelle Ragu and Langherino Bottone), bread with ricotta, Insalata di Campo, and Pavlova. Kind of dark inside so make sure to bring glasses or use your phone to light up the menu. This restaurant definitely gets busy on the weekend, so I'd recommend making a reservation. Staff were exceptional and our party was seated right away. The menu was a little challenging to read (all in Italian), but our server was great at explaining every item and giving us some popular recommendations. FOOD -Insalata di Campo: 3.5/5- very fresh, but a little bland. -Spaghetti Pomodoro: 5/5- I'm not usually crazy about spaghetti, but this was great. They really perfected the simple dish. -Squash Agnolotti 4/5- can't remember the exact name on the menu, but this was great. Similar to ravioli. We had one of the best seats in the house, which was a booth that overlook the entire restaurant including the bar. If I thought the view was great I think that the staff and services is even better. Firstly there's always somebody to whisk by your table to make sure you have all the beverages food at anything you might need. What I find out standing about this restaurant is the staff works together to make the dining experience phenomenal. Our server spent a good amount of time with us picking out just the right wine that was going to go with my husband's fish dish and our big short rib for Sue and I. I certainly have my favorites, but the food was all good. My favorite was the tuna appetizer and the short ribs. The gnocchi was some of the best I've had, and the anchovy and fish, Sue, and Shannon raved about Great dessert course and the Amaro tasting was just brilliant. We had all three bottles left on the table for our tasting and I am hooked 110% recommend this restaurant. read more
