it was bumpinnnnn on a Thursday night. gone here before for wine and was lovely during the day but wanted to grab a few light bites with a friend and we shared 4 small dishes: grilled cheese, elote "rib" corn (my favorite of all), fries, and meatballs.
We believe in second chances. And by we I mean me, my friends, and Tom. We showed up last night and immediately the atmosphere was different. Every single table was full and bustling. The people were laughing, the drinks were flowing. It smelled really good, which we would later find out was from the food especially that Mac and cheese. We started off with different wines, some that Tom recommended based on what we told him we didn't like or did like. He apologized for our previous experience and was genuinely a nice guy. Honestly it's very admirable for a business owner to take feedback to heart and want to incorporate it. Plus he's a really cool guy when you get to know him. The staff was busy running around but still made time to come check on us. Our final verdict is we came on a bad day. This time we got the actual Waystone experience. We finally got to try the chicken bites with a creamy aioli, fries with yogurt sauce, and the star of the show was the Mac and cheese. Tik tok did live up to the hype and we will have to come back for one of their jazz nights. Be warned this place gets busy! But it's worth it.
Since its pride month, I am reviewing this lovely wine bar once again as part of reviews of places that are open-to-all and LGBTQIA+ friendly! I love this place so much. They have a great list of alternating wines, and the food is super good too! I like the old bay fries and the Brussels sprouts. Staff is always warm and welcoming. It's get busy, but people turn over enough that there is usually somewhere to sit. We always mean to try a different wine bar, but we always seem to end up here due to the warm and friendly atmosphere.
Came to Waystone on the Friday after Christmas hoping for a cozy wine bar vibe, but the experience was pretty disappointing. As soon as we approached the bar to take a quick photo, the bartender snapped at us that the kitchen was closed. No greeting or welcome. It immediately set an uncomfortable tone. We ended up ordering one bottle of wine which was fine. When I asked for water, the bartender rudely dropped the bottle on the table. The service felt dismissive and unfriendly the entire time, which really overshadowed the space. Unfortunately, between the service and the overall vibe, it is not a place I would return to. The art decor is also a bit odd and may not be for everyone, especially the paitings of white girls with dreadlocks. Overall, not the warm wine bar experience we were hoping for.

However, it quickly filled up, and we enjoyed our weekend night at this bar. I tried their Rose Zinfadel. The drink was light, fruity, and not overly sweet. It was perfect for winding down during the weekend, and my friend and I shared some fries. It was the perfect snack to enjoy alongside lovely live music. Great laid-back experience and was not too loud to allow space for great conversations too!
Loved waystone! A fun wine menu with flight options, small shareable plates and a cute atmosphere with outside seating options. The spinach dip was delicious and our server was nice and helpful. Will be back !
Incredibly cute bar in North Beach, I love the vibes inside -- mild but cozy lighting, a mix of bar and table spots, and overalll very chill when I went after dinner on a weekday night. I don't profess to know a lot about wine, but I got a flight here of red / orange / white wine, and each one was pretty light and flavorful. Would recommend as a spot to bring a date or hang out with a few friends. They also have themed nights sometimes so the day I went they were playing some banging music (without it being too rowdy).
Came on a Saturday and it was busy, but we were still able to get a seat at the bar! They had a good assortment of wine and food on their menu. I love that they had an affordable wine flight! The wine itself was pretty good but it was low in alcohol so didn't feel any effects. The inside was super cute and cozy and the staff were very friendly! I will be coming back!
I popped into Waystone on a Tuesday evening and the jazz was incredible. It is loud but really great of an experience. The food was surprisingly solid. I just am always amazed by places that can do good food and ambience and have a wide selection of drinks and entertainment and waystone checks off all of those boxes. I really enjoyed speaking to the people who are working there as well. Even as it got really busy too, and they were super kind! Great location, solid food -- Mac and cheese, ribs and beet salad were SO good!
My friends and I came back to Waystone this past Friday and the experience we had was a complete 180 from the first time we came. The ambiance was lovely, service was amazing (thank you Tom!), and the food was incredible. We got the fries, chicken bites, and the Mac n cheese (unfortunately not pictured because we ate it all before we remembered to take a pic). The Mac n cheese was one of the BEST I've ever had. 10/10 would recommend. Can't wait to come back again :)
Waystone is technically a wine bar, but spiritually it's a community living room disguised as a jazz lounge with snacks. Yes, the wine is excellent..(not selling you 'natural' actively fermenting bottles) thoughtfully curated... the cab franc , interesting without being pretentious. Yes, the bites hit (shoutout to the watermelon salad). But what really makes Waystone magic is the people. Everyone who works here is warm, funny, and present in a way that makes you feel like you belong, whether it's your first visit or your 50th. Live jazz nights here are their own kind of therapy. I once saw a harpist who made me feel like I was floating inside the music. No cover, no pressure, just ridiculously good musicians making the whole place glow. One thing I love: the rotating local art. The walls change every so often as new artists take over, and it completely shifts the energy of the space. You might not love every piece, but that's kind of the point--it's alive, it's personal, and it's supporting real artists in SF. And if you do love something, you can take it home (yep, everything's for sale). Whether you're here for the jazz, the wine, the art, or the people.. waystone shows up with soul. I'd give it six stars if I could.
Super cute and vibey wine bar with very friendly staff! They are definitely very knowledgeable about the wines and recommended the perfect light white wine for me. The glasses are very affordable compared to other wine bars I've been to, and the food was great! I really liked the chicken bites, fries (the aioli was addicting), and the brussels sprouts. Would definitely come back for their live jazz Sunday - Tuesday! Wasn't too packed on a Thursday night around 9-10 which made it the perfect spot to sit and chat with friends. Highly recommend!
This place is so cute! A little dark and kinda loud but a great place to get started. Strictly a wine bar but large selection. They have some beers and non alcoholic drinks as well. A good selection of food. Went with the pear brut and tried the ipa. Both were solid. Also got the cheese plate which...how can you drink and not have charcuterie of some sort?!?! It was so pretty and the cheeses and bread were a delight. Def would come back if I was in the hood.
Lovely little wine bar for a night out! Super busy and loud but a great ambiance. Small indoor and small outdoor seating. The wine was pretty good, and the tapas were amazing! I loved the poke. It's a bit sweeter but a great taste. Also a cute dog roaming around. Definitely will be back! read more

I popped into Waystone on a Tuesday evening and the jazz was incredible. It is loud but really great of an experience. The food was surprisingly solid. Cozy wine bar with live music and nice service! The food was great and I appreciated the variety of bites on the menu. The shrimp roll was nicely dressed and perfectly toasted bun. Fries had great seasoning and side of aioli. The chicken add-on to the salad is fried popcorn chicken bites which I did not expect, but it was still delicious. Brussel sprouts could be crispier but had a nice healthy portion! read more

This is my new favorite wine bar in the city with the most delish food menu! My out-of-town girls were visiting for the weekend so a wine bar was definitely on the itinerary. Came here on a Friday at 5:15pm and was able to grab one of the last tables for 3. We started with the red flight, chilled winter red flight, and the rainbow flight to get a good taste of what kinds of wines were offered here. We got a bottle of our favorite glass out of the tastings, which was a unique and unknown (to me) Blaufrankisch from Slovenia. To help all the wines go down, we ordered brussels sprouts, Old Bay fries, spinach dip, mac & cheese, and the fried chicken bites. All the food was delicious and exceeded my expectations for wine bar food, with my favorites being the fries and warm spinach dip. I loved that we were here just as the sun was setting and got to see the vibes go from daytime casual to a moodier space with bumping house beats, low lighting, and buzzing energy. Service was great, everyone was so friendly and clearly very passionate about wine. This is such a good spot to start a fun date night or catch up with the girlies. Easy 5 stars, I cannot wait to be back! read more

So fun!! Came here for the first time with a friend and we had a great experience. It's a small, cozy spot with some tables, larger tables towards the back and of course bar seating. The bartender was very friendly and knowledgeable, he talked to us a bit about orange wines and gave us some tasters. A lot of different wine and food options on the menu. We both went with a glass of wine and also ordered hummus which came with bread, cucumber slices and pickles. It was good but I'd want to try something else next time (maybe the whipped feta). I recommend and will definitely be back! read more
Love Waystone. Every time we've been, we've had a great time. Just with the whole ambiance and service they knock it out of the park. The live music is always fun and they have a pretty packed events calendar too. The food has always been great but most recently the whipped feta was an absolute winner. Finally, the wines. Gah, so many great wines! There's also always something new. I love that even on a packed night, they will help recommend something you'll enjoy that you've never had. This place is a must go to if you're in San Francisco. We called in for a light bite and drinks and were overwhelmed by the service, welcome, food, wines and beers. Matt the manager is a delight! He was so knowledgeable about wines and also spent time giving us suggestions for other places locally to visit. It was the nicest afternoon we had on our holiday and his hospitality made it for us!! We were hoping to get back but time ran away with us, but we will definitely be back when we go back to San Francisco. The Mac and cheese was to die for, better than some high class restaurants I've had it in and the wine collection is so extensive and delicious. Thanks for making our visit so good Matt!!! They also have jazz and live music which we caught some of which just elevates the relaxed chilled atmosphere! Great spot! read more

Tom the owner is spot on as well as his bartenders. Very SF kind of place where every variation on the theme is welcome. Technically a jazz club with live music but they also have good eats. Impossible to park here like most of SF so either taker an Uber or Lyft unless you live walking distance from it. read more

The jazz band on tuesdays rules the restaurant. It was way too loud. We were one of the 4 tables that complained about the volume and we were the furthest away from the band. The servers also agreed and informed us that they already told the band numerous times to turn it down and they wouldn't. It's a shame because Waystone has great food, the wine was FANTASTIC (rose pinot noir), the servers were a pleasure, and overall the atmosphere was wonderful. But, if you have to scream to communicate to the person directly next to you and fear for your hearing, its hard to say you'll come back. read more

Super cozy wine bar in North Beach! Matt was so awesome and gave us amazing recommendations based off each of our individual preferences. He was so knowledgeable of all the wines - it truly made our experience so enjoyable. We also got the grilled cheese and it was the perfect pairing! Waystone has themed weekly events such as jazz nights and wine tasting Wednesdays! They're also starting up wine classes if you're interested in learning more about wines! Overall we had a great time, will definitely be adding Waystone to our rotation and be back for some of the events!! read more

Loved this place! The owner was so nice and funny and picked out some great food items + wine pairings for us! The ribs are a must and the dessert wine was so good! They have the perfect vibe for a girls night or date night spot I can't wait to come back! read more
