Solid food. We had 4 pizzas-burnt leek, mushroom, hot honey and snob hill. If you like pizza with some sweetness I would get the hot honey and burnt leek. For small plates, we had the east of north beach which I personally wasn't a big fan of. It's a fusion-y pasta dish with chicarron, pork belly and some veggies on top. I would still give it a five star for creativity. The vietnamese roll as ok. Caviar cheesy puff was cheesy enough. I like the beet salad. Love the menu item names. For dessert we had the orange you sweet and icecream and i liked both! The servers here were busy but friendly. It was pretty busy on a wednesday evening and I love that they play different types of music from the record player. The table was a bit small for our party of 6 but it wasn't a big deal. 3 1/2 stars. This is the old Venticello space. Venticello was always cozy, romantic. You've got brick, you're on a hill (Nob), out front there's a view of the bay bridge, the pizza oven aromas are forever wafting... What's not to love? But this is a bit too cozy. I've had dinner here now 3 times, & every time it was challenging to have a conversation because the tables are SO close together. You can hear everyone next to you, everyone next to you can hear you. And getting to & from your table? Your coat will hit every table & chair you have to pass on the way. So cozy romantic neighborhood vibe, not so much. It's more NYC grand central station terminal, only without the trains. That's not meant to be a bad thing, I love GCS. Just know going in. Now, the food. The allure & the aromas of the pizza oven are thoroughly intoxicating. No disputing that. You'd be remiss not to try a pizza. But when that pizza is small enough to be considered an individual size & averages more than 30 bucks (I must have hot honey!), that's just hard to justify. We always do a spicy meat variation. Crust was always on point, & while toppings aren't on the generous side, they are fresh & flavorful. Tasting quality is always a win. There is pasta on the menu as well, & I did enjoy the gnocchi each time I had it, once with peas, once with corn & roe. But honestly these were ordered just to round out our meal (to try something additional to the salad & pizza), & next time I might skip the pasta & just order 2 pies. One salad, one pizza, & 2 glasses of wine will run you over a hundred dollars. That's one salad you shared with your date, & without dessert. Typical SF prices? Maybe. But when the tables are set up like this (to churn & burn), & with the vinyl spinning dance hall vibe, the prices seem disproportionate, & too steep for multiple weeknight visits. This spot gets busy. I mean jumpin busy. Our server has forgotten our wine on 2 visits. First time, after ordering we waited at least 15 minutes, our drinks never arrived. Then he brought out our appetizer. Without our drinks. We waited another 15 minutes, then we finally just reminded him. He apologized. The second time, almost the same scenario entirely except this time my husband got our server's attention & reminded him just before the appetizer came out. Easy to forgive once, but now there's a pattern. There are 2 bars, one tiny one downstairs with the pizza oven, a larger one upstairs. There's also a tiny bit of seating upstairs, if you don't mind being right next to the entrance. But again, it's very tight quarters. I'd recommend the upstairs bar for the clandestine feel, & the downstairs bar if you want to survey the oven action & the dining room. With the DJ spinning vinyl, and all the bustle, it is a fun spot. Best for dinner with friends. I've been wanting to try Back to Back for a while and came for a little date night on a Thursday night. We made a reservation beforehand and was able to get seated quickly. I would definitely recommend getting a reservation rather than trying to walk-in if possible as it was packed even for a weekday night. We started with the squid games app to share and loved the squid stuffed with pork, shrimp and sausage! The tomatoey romesco sauce was delicious and the crispy breadcrumbs added a nice crunchy texture. Flavorful wise it really packed a punch! Of course we had to get the pizza and shared the burratata! and burnt leek. Between the two, I liked the burnt leek more - the smoked pancetta was great and super good with the creamy stracciatella. The burratata was good as well with sausage, squash puree and burrata. You really can't go wrong with the combo but I wished the sausage had a bit more seasoning. Overall really cute spot for date night or a casual but nice night out with friends. The atmosphere is a bit loud and busy though and the tables are packed in tight. Service, unfortunately, was a major letdown. We were told we'd be seated after a table was cleaned, so we waited outside to avoid blocking staff. I watched them reset and split the table, but another couple who walked in afterward was seated immediately, while we were never called back in. When we went back inside to ask, the server started taking our name as if we had just arrived. I dined here last week with a friend and was blown away by the food. We started with the Brussel sprouts which were soft yet crispy at the same time and the sauce was to die for!! It just kept getting better when our ravioli came out - I'm not crazy about asparagus but I would eat this for breakfast lunch and dinner. I can see why it draws so much of an audience on weekends. I thought the food was ok. The service was a bit slow, which is understandable with the full dining room. We got three pizzas and a salad, and while we asked for the salad to be brought out at the same time as the pizzas, as it was someone's main meal, it wasn't brought out until about ten minutes after the pizzas were served. Back to Back is a solid wood-fired pizza spot, but for me it's very much a stick-to-the-pizzas kind of place. We tried two pizzas, the hot honey and the burnt leek, and I'd honestly rate them about the same overall. The hot honey pizza stood out mainly because the honey and hot sauce really carried it. Without that extra kick, the base pizza was pretty meh. The burnt leek pizza had great flavor and was probably my favorite bite-wise, but both pizzas had the same issue for me with the crust. It leaned soft and I wish it had more crisp. We also ordered the duck-stuffed pasta appetizer, which was by far the weakest thing we had. It sounded great but ended up being very underwhelming. Finally tried B2B last night with a group of friends. We had the nice upstairs table next to the bar and it was perfect for 5. I thought all in all it was a good experience and I would return. We tried 2 pizzas: the shroom and the one with garlic sausage. I loved the garlic sausage one with fresh garlic coming through in every bite. These are neapolitan style pies. I read a few reviews lamenting the crust but the crust is good for this style of pizza. It's soft and chewy as it should be coming out of a wood fired oven around 900. Not sure if they're using 00 or something similar for flour but it's really good. My only complaint would be the pie size is very small. Easily enough for one hungry person. Also in line with napoletana style though. The seafood pasta was really good. Light on the olive oil and just enough flavor to be satisfying. Not overwhelming with oil or anything else. We had a good bottle of reasonably priced cab. Service was ok. It is loud in there though for sure. I saw a couple acoustic panel things they mounted to the ceiling but it isn't near enough to absorb all the noise. You will be yelling at each other across the dinner table. Naturally this seems to attract mostly a younger crowd but the whole thing works. Great neighborhood spot. read more

I had an absolutely incredible dinner here -- one of the best meals I have had in San Francisco. My party and I shared almost everything, including shishito peppers, cavatelli, the Snob Hill pizza, the That's Hot Honey pizza, the Panna Cotta, and the Flourless Dark Chocolate Cake. Really good food, honestly Im a big fan of the soft crust of the pizza. I enjoyed the margarita pizza and hot honey, and enjoyed the beet endive appetizer. Had a bit of a weird service experience though. There was nothing telling us we needed a reservation, but when we went there they said they had no non reservation tables open and so we left. After failing to find another food place 20 minutes later, we called and they said that we could set a reservation for right that second and sit down (which is like, the same as just walking in). The hostess/waitress did not inform us the first time that we could call and set up a reservation and just made it sound like they were fully booked (there was some other weird stuff about her, we were standing at the front after we came back waiting for her to finish texting on her phone to sit us) Overall a good place, just make sure to set up a reservation. The place itself is a nice setting, only complaint being the tables felt small and a bit cramped. Outside of that, the place was really good! If that stuff hadn't happened with the hostess, I would probably give this a 4/5 read more

Love the vibes and music and service--very personable, fun, and funny. Tried the brussels sprouts for an appetizer--very delicious and filling. The Snob Hill and Thats Hot, Honey were also very good--are they supposed to be personal pizzas? We each got their own and I took 3 slices of mine home, but the table of 2 next to us shared 1 pizza. Whoops. (A table of 2 that came later had 1 pasta and 1 pizza--the gnocchi looked very good.) Prices seemed reasonable for the location. The honey of the "Thats Hot, Honey" was housemade and delicious. We devoured almost everything and also enjoyed the wine selection. I'm thinking of joining the wine club which has a monthly wine tasting, but I wish it wasn't an extra +$50ish for a +1 to the wine tasting :'( Still, I'm considering it! Will be back. The pizzas had a nice thin crust with enough integrity to hold onto the toppings which were 1) Me So Corny - summery corn, ricotta, jalapeño - so light and fresh 2) That's Hot, Honey - the (best) little pepperonis with, of course, hot honey - spicy, savory, indulgent. The octopus was nicely grilled and tender, and the panna cotta was layered with a creamier top and a denser bottom, and juicy berries to balance everything out. The lemon butter was interesting but to me was not a great fit for the dish. Lemon is too strong/tart. The endive/beet salad very good but I would cut beets smaller, cut endive thinner and remove some stalk, add more nuts. The tuna tartare was Fantastic!!! The melon is a great touch. Pizza was very very good, but if the crust is gonna be that thin, which I love, you can't put so many ingredients on top, it's too heavy and too wet (from corn and cheese). read more
