I've been wanting to try Back to Back for a while and came for a little date night on a Thursday night. We made a reservation beforehand and was able to get seated quickly. I would definitely recommend getting a reservation rather than trying to walk-in if possible as it was packed even for a weekday night. We started with the squid games app to share and loved the squid stuffed with pork, shrimp and sausage! The tomatoey romesco sauce was delicious and the crispy breadcrumbs added a nice crunchy texture. Flavorful wise it really packed a punch! Of course we had to get the pizza and shared the burratata! and burnt leek. Between the two, I liked the burnt leek more - the smoked pancetta was great and super good with the creamy stracciatella. The burratata was good as well with sausage, squash puree and burrata. You really can't go wrong with the combo but I wished the sausage had a bit more seasoning. Overall really cute spot for date night or a casual but nice night out with friends. The atmosphere is a bit loud and busy though and the tables are packed in tight. We did share a sparkling syrah as well which seemed fitting for a pizza spot and it was a nice and light wine to drink with the pizza!

Food was great -- had the hot honey pizza, bread and anchovy spread, and pork belly. Everything was well executed and the flavors complemented each other nicely. Service, unfortunately, was a major letdown. We were told we'd be seated after a table was cleaned, so we waited outside to avoid blocking staff. I watched them reset and split the table, but another couple who walked in afterward was seated immediately, while we were never called back in. When we went back inside to ask, the server started taking our name as if we had just arrived. I calmly explained that we had already been waiting and had seen another walk-in couple seated ahead of us (which they later confirmed). It was clear there was a mistake, but it left a bad impression. I've been here a few times and the food has been consistently good, but the service experience was disappointing enough that I won't be returning or recommending it.

Truly, the food here is so delicious. We ordered the hot honey pizza, the aspara-guess it's spring and the give peas a chance. The pasta was fresh and light. The pizza was authentic. We sat in the bar where there are only four tables, and they spin records on a record player and it was so cozy!!! 10 out of 10 on vibes and quality of the food. Faris was a sweetheart and welcoming. Dessert! The bunt cake and sorbets..... fire! Incredible experience!!!!

My friend visiting from NY found this charming restaurant on TikTok and suggested a weekday meetup here. As a local, I have heard of tons of businesses, but this place wasn't on my radar yet. I'm so glad we decided to try this place and even were able to get a reservation the day of! When we arrived (early), we were warmly greeted and taken to our table promptly. Our server was very attentive but didn't hover. I felt like the service here was fantastic. We decided to get the 'That's Hot, Honey' fan-favourite pizza with brussels sprouts as an appetizer. The food was excellent and just the right amount for us two. This is such a great spot for a chill, intimate dinner. Highly recommend!

Strong "I want it that way" mezcal cocktail. My party enjoyed our hot pizza, burratata and snob hill (blue cheese arugula) pizzas that fed our party of 5 well. Staff friendly and attentive. Heads up soundproofing could be better and could get loud.

Been wanting to try Back to Back for a while now! Loved my experience here, came with a group of 5 to celebrate a birthday and could not have asked for better service and a better night! Sort of loud inside - caught myself yelling at some points in the night but it was super lively for a Thursday night! Cocktails were great, food was even better. We got two of the Thats Hot, Honey pizzas and added burrata since the burrata pizza wasn't speaking to us. It was wildly good and would highly recommend. Wish we tried some of the smaller plates but theres always next time.. Loved looking at all the vinyl records they have in here as well! Will be back soon!

I dined here last week with a friend and was blown away by the food. We started with the Brussel sprouts which were soft yet crispy at the same time and the sauce was to die for!! It just kept getting better when our ravioli came out - I'm not crazy about asparagus but I would eat this for breakfast lunch and dinner. Next came our pizza and I loved the use of squash puree as a sauce! It was not too squashy and very good with the burrata ( and great leftovers) I also had a strawberry spritz which was very yummy. Our service was good, I forget his name but very knowledgeable about the menu and had good recommendations.

Back to Back definitely shines for its upscale ambience. Its two-tiered dining area is beautifully decorated with hand drawn posters, record players, and lights. I can see why it draws so much of an audience on weekends. I thought the food was ok. The service was a bit slow, which is understandable with the full dining room. We got three pizzas and a salad, and while we asked for the salad to be brought out at the same time as the pizzas, as it was someone's main meal, it wasn't brought out until about ten minutes after the pizzas were served. I'd definitely recommend this place as a nice date spot but I believe you can get better food and service elsewhere.

Burnt Leek and That's Hot, Honey pizzas
    Eric L.

Back to Back is a solid wood-fired pizza spot, but for me it's very much a stick-to-the-pizzas kind of place. We tried two pizzas, the hot honey and the burnt leek, and I'd honestly rate them about the same overall. The hot honey pizza stood out mainly because the honey and hot sauce really carried it. Without that extra kick, the base pizza was pretty meh. The burnt leek pizza had great flavor and was probably my favorite bite-wise, but both pizzas had the same issue for me with the crust. It leaned soft and I wish it had more crisp. We also ordered the duck-stuffed pasta appetizer, which was by far the weakest thing we had. It sounded great but ended up being very underwhelming. It was dry, lacked flavor, and wasn't even close to the pizzas. I'd come back, but next time I'd skip the appetizers entirely and just stick to the pizzas

A good friend recommended this neighborhood spot, and I'm so glad we all dinner one evening during a recent visit to San Francisco. They were so nicely accommodating to add one more person to our party of 5 to equal 6 on a Saturday night - so grateful! Their menu has a nice variety that everyone was happy with what they had - burgers, pizza, pasta, drinks, dessert - so tasty and satisfying! Our whole party was completely happy with our dining experience. The ambiance is lively - loved the energy of this place! And the service was friendly and helpful. Thank you so much! I would come back here on my next visit to San Francisco, and I would recommend it for both small parties and group reservations.

On unassuming residential corner in Nob Hill, you'll find this restaurant full of East village vibes. A steady beat of cool LPs in the background. The hot honey pepperoni pizza is so good. One of the best pepperoni pizzas in SF.

    The Hpt Chicory salad
    Jim M.

I got the Hot Chicory salad. It was delicious and huge. Got the Salsiccia pizza, added pepperoni, and it was excellent. The wait staff was friendly. Made sure to save room for dessert and ordered the Hot Flakey Tart - supposed to be a hot apple tart with ice cream and caramel sauce. What a let down. For $15 bucks, you get a tart the size of a matchbox and a scoop of ice cream the size of a thimble. Totally not worth the $15 and the experience left a bad taste to the whole experience. Don't order the tart.

Came on a weekday with a reservation. I ordered the hot honey pizza without pepperonis. It was okay -- the pizza was warm with a very thin crust and came with chili oil. However, it was underwhelming in terms of flavor, especially given the piece point. I do love the ambience of this place - it's great for a girls dinner or date night! Their servers are attentive and quick.

The bartender then told her to "get the f*ck out of my face" and instructed staff not to let her or us in, even though my friend hadn't done anything wrong. It was so confusing and extremely inappropriate. The behavior was unnecessarily hostile and disrespectful. This bar does not treat its customers with basic courtesy, and that bartender showed zero professionalism or customer service skills.

It was founded by Anton "Tony" Nikitovich and quickly became a gathering place for the neighborhood's Italian and Croatian communities, where people came to swap stories, argue politics, and enjoy a stiff drink after a long day. And honestly, that tradition carried on well into the years when many of us became regulars. I hadn't been back for a few years until recently, when I decided to stop in again. The bar wasn't overly busy, but a handful of neighborhood folks were sitting at the counter, trading stories over their drinks. It felt instantly familiar. Not much has changed since the early 2000s when I used to come here regularly, and that's exactly what makes Tony Nik's special. Step inside, and it still feels like a mid-century film set: tufted leather seating, a long wooden bar that's seen nearly a century of San Francisco history, and that iconic neon sign glowing outside. While much of the city has reinvented itself again and again, Tony Nik's somehow held onto its soul. It's a grown-up bar without being stuffy, no loud club music, no trendy gimmicks, just well-made cocktails, a classic jukebox, and an atmosphere that feels earned rather than manufactured. The bar stayed in the Nikitovich family for decades, and the current owners were wise enough to preserve both the name and the vintage character Tony originally created. It's one of those rare places that reminds you what North Beach used to be, and, thankfully, still is.
