However, all of us were too full for dessert and Hayes Valley's livelier venues didn't seem all that conducive for conversation, so our options felt limited. That is, until my buddy came across Ebb & Flow and was reminded of the good things he had heard about them. And I have to say...I don't disagree! Now, even though we ended up here more due to their proximity and convenience than anything else, Ebb & Flow is a pretty awesome wine bar...assuming you know where to find it. Given how they're located along a small alley street off of Gough, they aren't super visible, but I actually like how they're somewhat removed from most of Hayes Valley's hustle and bustle. Not only does it make them feel that much more relaxed, but it also makes them feel that a sort of a hidden secret! Inside, between how nice the decor looks, the mildly dim lighting, and their cozy vibe, this is such a great spot to grab a glass with friends, coworkers, or dates. What's more, despite their relatively small size and our lack of a reservation, our group of six was still able to walk in and snag a table (albeit at their tables outside). As for their offerings, I'm no wine connoisseur, but it's pretty awesome. Beyond just reds and whites, they also have a variety of orange/rose, sparkling, and desserts wines, including some that are organic, biodynamic and/or women owned, as well as an interesting selection of beers, sake, snack plates, cheeses plates, charcuterie boards, and tinned seafood! Since I didn't see my any cabernet sauvignons listed, I opted to go with a French pinot noir (Lucien Crochet La Croix du Roy, 2018), which was pretty solid. I appreciated how our server took the time to explain the notes and highlights on each of the different wines we ordered and came outside several times to check on us (nice not to be forgotten out there). One thing I will say, though, is that, perhaps in part because of the neighborhood, the prices here aren't the cheapest, as my single glass ended up costing ~$23 after the 18% surcharge they apply. That said, I didn't get the cheapest option they have and it's also quite possible that their wines are more on the premium side. Either way, with so many great benefits to offer, as well as how there are so many more restaurants to come back to Hayes Valley for, I'm sure it's just a matter of time before we'll all find ourselves back here again. And when I do, I'll make sure to try some of Ebb & Flow's cheese and charcuterie boards that I've seen so many of my fellow Yelpers speak so highly about! That said, my friend, who ordered the same wine, absolutely loved it and thought it was delicious. So maybe I just ordered the wrong wine for my palate? ‍ Either way, the wine is only part of the experience. The energy here is fantastic, the bartender was welcoming and friendly, and the crowd was cheerful without being obnoxious, which I really appreciate. I'm not usually much of a night person, but I genuinely had a great time. It was one of those evenings that reminded me how nice it is to get out, enjoy good company, and simply soak in the atmosphere. I'm really glad I took my friends up on their offer to go out. Definitely a 5 star experience for the atmosphere, the energy, and the overall vibe. This seems to be such an interesting neighborhood. All their drinks come pre-mixed and if you look carefully, they just pull it out of the fridge and pour the booze into it and shake it up. They pour it into a glass and add whatever oils and garnishes on top. It hardly feels "crafted" and doesn't warrant the $20+ price tag. They also heavily push their "signature drinks" maybe because they don't know how to make other cocktails?
