After unexpectedly running into some old friends during our dinner at The Happy Crane, we quickly found ourselves scouring through Yelp to find a place for us to sit and catch up. However, all of us were too full for dessert and Hayes Valley's livelier venues didn't seem all that conducive for conversation, so our options felt limited. That is, until my buddy came across Ebb & Flow and was reminded of the good things he had heard about them. And I have to say...I don't disagree! Now, even though we ended up here more due to their proximity and convenience than anything else, Ebb & Flow is a pretty awesome wine bar...assuming you know where to find it. Given how they're located along a small alley street off of Gough, they aren't super visible, but I actually like how they're somewhat removed from most of Hayes Valley's hustle and bustle. Not only does it make them feel that much more relaxed, but it also makes them feel that a sort of a hidden secret! Inside, between how nice the decor looks, the mildly dim lighting, and their cozy vibe, this is such a great spot to grab a glass with friends, coworkers, or dates. What's more, despite their relatively small size and our lack of a reservation, our group of six was still able to walk in and snag a table (albeit at their tables outside). As for their offerings, I'm no wine connoisseur, but it's pretty awesome. Beyond just reds and whites, they also have a variety of orange/rose, sparkling, and desserts wines, including some that are organic, biodynamic and/or women owned, as well as an interesting selection of beers, sake, snack plates, cheeses plates, charcuterie boards, and tinned seafood! Since I didn't see my any cabernet sauvignons listed, I opted to go with a French pinot noir (Lucien Crochet La Croix du Roy, 2018), which was pretty solid. I appreciated how our server took the time to explain the notes and highlights on each of the different wines we ordered and came outside several times to check on us (nice not to be forgotten out there). One thing I will say, though, is that, perhaps in part because of the neighborhood, the prices here aren't the cheapest, as my single glass ended up costing ~$23 after the 18% surcharge they apply. That said, I didn't get the cheapest option they have and it's also quite possible that their wines are more on the premium side. Either way, with so many great benefits to offer, as well as how there are so many more restaurants to come back to Hayes Valley for, I'm sure it's just a matter of time before we'll all find ourselves back here again. And when I do, I'll make sure to try some of Ebb & Flow's cheese and charcuterie boards that I've seen so many of my fellow Yelpers speak so highly about! Ambiance - it was beautiful inside and very clean. Reservation - did not need one, it was really empty for a Saturday night. Probably 4 parties there. Wines - they just did not have the type of wine that I prefer. I tried the "orange flight" and my partner had the "Chardonnay flight", out of the 5-6 wines we were poured, we only liked one of them. I had dinner in Hayes with some friends and we decided to continue the evening with a wine bar. My friend found Ebb & Flow and off we went! I brought my bike and there was a nice bike rack right on Grove (Ebb&Flow is located off Grove on an alley street, so it seems more intimate and cute.) I love the indoor and outdoor seating--great for a date or girls' night out (GNO.) I appreciated how the menu had descriptions of the wine (the staff was also very knowledgeable and helpful.) We stumbled upon Ebb and Flow after we had left a different wine bar that we didn't really jibe with. These guys are on a side street really and don't show up in "wine bar" searches on the big search engines ( thank you Yelp). Ebb and Flow is a super chill spot that's quiet and unassuming. And that's a good thing :-) a great, quiet place to hang with friends or just chill by yourself. They've got a nice rotating selection of wines from old world to new. Bottle prices are reasonable and even the "by the glass" prices are good considering your "in the city" :-). They've got some small bites, charcuterie and cheese things and such, but there's also plenty of places nearby for food. We loved our experience here and have bookmarked it as a "go to" wine bar when near Hayes Valley for sure. read more

Lovely women-owned wine bar with nice Spanish wine tasting at $16, with two generous tastes of red (a light but bold red fermented in stainless steel and a second in large oak barrel) and a creative cheese plate ($20). It apparently requires a special tool to cut rosettes out of cheese, and I am all about it. Modern decor in the interior along with a simple covered outdoor parklet with primary yellow cafe seating. Ebb and Flow is housed in a creatively redesigned former parking garage turned wine loft down Ivy Street alley in Hayes Valley. Opened two years ago during the pandemic, and still thriving due to their creative approach and delightful setting and service. Perfect for a quiet (playing great music though) stylish date night stop for Hayes Valley dining or before the symphony or opera nearby. One of those rare SF parking lots --Opera Plaza-- is just a block away, or Uber here. Update, came in 37 minutes prior to close for a glass of wine and were turned away. Disappointing, especially since seemed to be enough time to enjoy a glass prior to close. Do keep this in mind if you want to pop in within a hour of their posted closing time. read more

Don't Go. Shady Auto 20% gratuity for a glass of wine. And they try to hide it from you when you close out. Super shady behavior. They hope you don't notice or are not going to complain. Such a great place and totally ruined by small time greed literally fraud. In a neighborhood with so many options, it's such bad behavior. I mentioned this to my entire friends group and we are headed Birba for future happy hours. To the owner: you have a nice thing going, if you decide to be small time greedy to literally rip us off (I disputed it with my credit card company and they flagged you!) then you can lose all your traffic quick! It was extremely awkward that the restaurant waiter was asking for a 18% tip. He didn't really make the experience special that warrants a 18% tip. He legit just spent 10 second pouring wine. To avoid paying for that such of a high tip I asked to pay in cash. Then, he said he didn't offer change. It's just a baaaddddd loooookk!!! Cute date night, wine spot! On a Saturday night, we walked in at around 9 PM/10 PM and was able to grab a table. When you first get here, you're met at the counter where they direct you to where you can be seated. You then go back to the counter to order your drinks and they'll bring it to you. It's got a nice quiet enough ambiance where you're not shouting over each other and can still have a conversation, so def somewhere you can be at to get to know someone lol. Outdoor seating is available, indoor capacity is limited and they are operating with caution and in compliance with SF mandates. Now that I laid out the most important information for any of us reading reviews during time, let's get on with my adoringly long review that explains just how much and why I love this place.. My boyfriend and I happened upon this place while walking around at night wondering which of the 3 places we should REvisit for our nightly outing. An alleyway that had never been interesting due to its lack of...well...anything, featured a sign on the sidewalk for a new establishment opening. Out of pure curiosity, we went in and WE ARE SO GLAD WE DID. Despite having opened JUST as the pandemic was affecting closures in SF, they've still managed to reopen, and for that I am beyond excited. The owner's AMAZING--super friendly, courteous, talkative without being overbearing and, most importantly, knowledgeable. I love wine, but am not a wine snob and this place makes me feel completely safe and comfortable. There's a great selection of wines (as well as some beers/ciders) and every time I order something, I'm met with a fascinating explanation of ingredients, tasting notes, the company/region it's sourced from and sometimes even why the owner specifically chose that particular wine for her menu. It's laid back without being cheap. They're knowledgable without being pretentious. It's a lovely wine experience without the sniffing/swirling/tasting notes that you would NEVER IN YOUR LIFE have tasted (e.g., pencil shavings..don't ask) being thrown at you. I highly recommend this place for the atmosphere, customer service, tasty drinks and snacks. If you are looking for an amazing local wine bar that is female and minority owned, Ebb & Flow is the place for you! To put some perspective on the amazing journey Ebb & Flow has taken to become a Hayes Valley neighborhood gem, the wine bar opened about eight days before the lockdown in March of 2020. Against all odds, Ebb and Flow survived and reopened during covid. To be completely honest, I personally don't know if I would've made it through the pandemic myself if I hadn't found Ebb & Flow. I came here a few times a week from 2020-2022 because talking to the owner, Hyes, can put a smile on anyone's face for the week, and her bottle list is the best! Her outdoor parklet is super clean and off the busy Hayes valley street. I also recommend looking into her venue for any private celebrations that you may be considering as well - the space is chic, clean and good for family, friends, and first dates! You can find street metered parking around the area. It was pretty busy around the area and lots of people walking around, but I found parking near the wine bar. What a hidden gem! I discovered this place recently on the day they set out tables and opened up for patio seating. They opened days before shelter in place started, but I'm so glad they've managed to get their patio setup going! They have a fantastic wine list with a lot of interesting choices.
