This seems like a good date spot. Dim lights, nice wallpaper, intimate setting. Overall, I thought it was pricey for what we got so I will file this under a good place for an occasion, but likely won't be coming back unless the pasta portions are bigger. We got - - tonno e fagioli - this ended up being more like a tuna salad than what I was expecting. It was fine but not what I would order at a restaurant - malloreddus - super tasty pasta and you can tell it's well made. Came for mom's birthday and overall, some aspects of Barberio Osteria were excellent whereas other parts were just ok. First off, upon walking in, the majority of the tables were open so it was kind of odd to be offered the one right by the bathroom. Why? Then, when the waitresses came over, we began by asking if the bread of warm but instead of realizing it was a question the waitress noted "yes we can warm the bread" which implied we now ordered it. Welp, it's ok. At least it's Acme bread. As for the warming, it was put over the grill which added an interesting char flavor that actually complemented the olive tapenade quite well so secret menu ask I guess? We also added the citrus salad which had arugula, radicchio, pistachio, and a variety of citrus slices including oranges and grapefruit. It was a nice light and bright salad! Next we went with the 40 yolk pasta and the pappardelle. Between the two, the 40 yolk pasta was my favorite. The fresh sage really elevated the Parmesan. The pappardelle was also very good but it didn't have that unexpected pop of flavor. We also added the whole grilled red snapper which was grilled to perfection. The meat was sweet and tender and really tasty! I especially enjoyed it with the green sauce that accompanied it! I'm surprised at how easy it was to get a Saturday night reservation the day-off, but it was to my benefit -- would definitely come back for dinner with friends before a night out. Barberio Osteria has been on my "want to try" list for a while, so I was excited to see them on the Restaurant Week lineup. My husband and I decided to go and noticed there was plenty of reservation availability online, so we opted to walk in. We were seated right away, although next time I might book ahead since it looked like reservations offered more options (e.g., counter vs. standard seating). No big deal though - it was fun watching the hustle and bustle of the open kitchen (even if it got a little warm near the wood-burning grill). Since there were two of us, we were able to try almost everything on the RW menu (everything except the cappelletti), while also getting glimpses of other dishes being prepped in the kitchen. As a pasta fan, I was especially excited for the pappardelle with bolognese, and it did not disappoint. Everything we tried was delicious -- shoutout to the tonno e fagioli too! Went to Barberio Osteria the other night to celebrate the end of our honeymoon, and it's definitely an underrated gem ! The location is beautiful, the design of the space is modern yet comfortable, and there is adequate space between the table. Both of our servers were very kind as well. We ordered the anchovies as an appetizer that came with a delicious tomato and pepper accompaniment, a flavor with anchovies that is never had before but really enjoyed. My husband then ordered the papardelle with the bolognese which was insanely delicious. I try not to eat pork but had a small noodle and the flavoring on it by itself was remarkable. He absolutely loved it. I ordered a pasta dish with tomato sauce and summer squash which was perfectly cooked Al-denté and very well spiced. We then finished with the chocolate caramel budino which was a lot more delicate than other budinos I've had, but not too sweet. We truly had a wonderful time. The only thing I will say is that even though we said we were celebrating the end of our honeymoon in the reservation, nothing was really done to agknowledge it, so I might maybe not go for a life event, but the food more than made up for it and I can't wait to go back. read more

Super cute hidden gem! This dark romantic restaurant is tucked away on Valencia, great location to get a dinner before going out in the Mission (we ate here before going to a movie at the Alamo). We had an early reservation so it wasn't super busy. Service was quick and attentive. We liked Altovino a bit more because that truffle appetizer was just too good, seriously ! For the pasta, Strozzapreti was our fave--even the veggie version was packed with flavor from the veggies and creamy vibes. Seems like they switch up the veggie types now and then! The menu now is different from what we had back then. Pappardelle was as tasty as always, and the Agnolotti had this unique pasta texture that stood out. My colleague from Italy said it was the best Italian he's ever had in SF. We ordered the top three recommended pasta dishes. Intimate and cozy vibes, and making a reservation last minute on Friday was very easy. I forgot what the arancini-like appetizer was called, but it was soo good, creamy and perfectly fried. My favorite pasta dish was the 40-yolk egg pasta with truffle. The pappardelle was great, and I loved the noodle texture of the spinach/olive pasta. This place was INCREDIBLE, and I mean incredible! After attending an event at Manny's a block away, a friend and I wandered down the street looking for a place to have dinner tonight. My friend is a a long-time, uber-foodie with incredible taste, and he said "let's pop in here." I am not exaggerating when I say this was one of the best meals with impeccable service that I have ever had. It was my first time here, but I'm ready to book my birthday for next year and become a regular! It was truly exquisite. Simply put, their homemade pastas are to die for. It was hard to decide between the 40 yolk linguine, or the butternut ricotta ravioli with hazelnuts, pomegranate seeds, brown butter, and sage. We went for the ravioli, and it was the best I have ever had. We then shared their generously cut pork chop which was out of this world and cooked to absolute perfection. We polished everything off with an affogato al caffe dessert which hit the spot and was superb. The food in and of itself was truly fantastic, and I rarely comment on service to be honest, but the service here was top notch. The wait staff were exceedingly knowledgeable about all the dishes and their recommendations, and they were incredibly attentive. There was never a crumb out of place or a spilled droplet of water that wasn't tended to within the blink of an eye. Again, I tend to focus on the food itself, but I have to say that the service matched their top tier food experience beautifully. So bravo to this incredible restaurant. I know I am carrying on a bit with this review and I promise I don't have any affiliation with or know anyone at this restaurant. They truly deserve all of the accolades out there, and how lucky am I to have stumble across this experience. Ten out of ten all around! As the night progressed more guest trickled in but plenty of space for walk ins. Drinks: Amalfi Sunset - well balanced and refreshing a little salty, sweet and bitter, nice starter beverage Insalata - solid mixed salad, with Asian pear and pomegranates, lightly dressed which is how I prefer my salads Suppli - very good - comes with two to an order, fried crispy with no greasiness, filled with risotto and cheese, the truffle aioli worked nicely with this, rich but delicious Agnolotti - fantastic, pasta was perfectly cooked with a slight al dente texture, the creamy mushroom filling was liquid almost like a sauce on the inside, the asparagus, onions, peas and brown sauce were a nice compliment Tagliatelle - a miss for me, overly salty, pasta was well cooked but a bit too many flavor component with olives, lamb, preserved lemons, fennel and mint would skip this one Service was excellent, staff is attentive and friendly. I think this place has reoriented my baseline for five star reviews. The quality of the food, dark and moody ambience, and immaculate service made this a dining experience that I would like to repeat over and over again. Is it traditional Italian? No, but you don't come here for that. You come for the innovation and creativity! Not one dish disappointed. Every dish was at least one person's favorite at our table. For the antipasti, we ordered the Acciughe (anchovies) and the Sformatino (honey nut squash custard). The savory-sour hit of the Acciughe was an explosion of flavor while the Sformatino brought a delectable creamy experience. For the primi, we ordered the Tajarin al Burro e Salvia, Malloreddus, and Pappardelle. My god, the Tajarin al Burro e Salvia was simple but RICH and my favorite pasta of the night, a mix of a very eggy thin noodle, melted better, sage and cheese. The Malloreddus made for lively discussion at our table, a saffron pasta dish with sausage and a crunch(!). The Pappardelle was the most classic dish of the night and well executed with premium meats. For dolci, we shared a Budino. It's described as a chocolate hazelnut pudding, but I would liken it more to a cross between custard and flan. It was rich, creamy and NOT TOO SWEET! Finally, our server Emmelle was a standout. Tried Barberio Osteria recently. The pasta was pretty decent, no complaints there. But the appetizers were kind of underwhelming. The anchovy dip with veggies didn't really work for me. The paste was too liquid, so it didn't stick to anything, which made it kind of annoying to eat. I get that it's meant to be creative, but it just didn't land. Wine selection was good though, and the place itself has a nice vibe, amaazing service too. I'd give it a 7 overall. Might go back if they change up the menu a bit. read more

We tried Barberio because my favorite Italian restaurant, Cotogna, was closed on Mondays. Spoiler alert-- Barberio is a top contender for my favorite Italian restaurant now. Our meal there was the best one we've had in SF in YEARS (of any genre/cuisine). Prosciutto was hand sliced, thin and sweet, paired with perfectly fried and seasoned gnocchi fritto. Poached tuna with gigante beans were delicious. The hangar steak was cooked perfectly. Tender and infused with almond wood smoke from their live fire grill. It was a erved with wood grilled radicchio and a mixed mushroom cream sauce. 40-yolk tajarin pasta with sage butter had a wonderful aroma, though it was a little heavy on the cheese that overpowered the noodles. The fresh noodles were also a little thinner than what we usually see. Agnolotti del plin was a little thick on the edges. Filled with truffle and mushrooms, the generous portion size seemed to be double what we've had at other places. Buttermilk orange flower water panna cotta was beautifully plated with flowers, pistachios and pomegranate seeds Gonzalo the server was fantastic--welcoming and professional without hovering. The menu seems to be updated with the latest seasonal offerings which is so exciting because this means, we'll get to try new things every time we visit :) We ordered these pastas and highly recommend: - Cappelletti (filled with autumn squash, mascarpone, parm, and serviced with brown butter, sage, toasted hazelnuts, pomegranates, and saba. If you take a look at my picture you'll see how beautiful each cappelletti is (they are a little bit bigger than a tortellini and have thicker dough, reminded me a little bit of wontons but with ticker dough). LOVED it, we wanted more. It was rich but not overwhelming, every bite left us wanting more! - Maccheroni alla chitarra (guinea fowl ragu, fennel, red onion, chili, porcini, tomatoes, roaster sweet peppers, capers, olives, parm). My high expectations for Barberio Osteria, with the several attestations to authenticity/provenance of this Italian food, were matched by their high prices, yet only by 60% of their food quality (60% great - 40% not so). The place itself is cavernous, and I spotted two couples with lightly complaining babies, which is what babies can be, yet it wasn't a problem because of the size, and it was a warm family touch. The 10 hour Bolognese Papardelle was very tasty, so that's 40% of the food, and so was the Beet Salad which was the other 20% (though, a small-ish portion). What was actually unpalatable was the Tajarin al Burro e Salvia, the person who ordered it said their tummy hurt, and then I ate it and shucks, same symptoms, so maybe some ingredient was having an off-night. The service did not match their prices though the host was very pleasant, but our server said hello and then was very busy bustling in the front (there were like 5 tables only) and so ordering took way too long and afterwards, the not-our-server was very kind in stepping in and clearing plates and getting us dessert menus. For $100 including 15% tip and tax for 2 people with just a (pretty flat, I have to say) $9 bottle of sparkling water, I expected better. Our 6-top of world travelers/eaters was very impressed! We shared several appetizers, pastas and 2 whole fish. Every dish was a hit! The whole fish were cooked perfectly - a notable feat on its own. Wine list combined reliable favorites (prosecco, Lambrusco) but also broadened our horizon with lesser known delights from Italy. Bottle list had good range from weeknight dinner to special event. The space is lovely - a blend of traditional with a splash of modern, great ambiance and we were delighted to find them showcasing local painter Robert Perkins. Had dinner here with a friend in July 2025. Couldn't have asked for a better experience. The bufalo mozzarella with sliced tomatoes, basil and balsamic vinegar was perfect. Fresh tangy bread and delicious butter and olive oil for the bread. Best most flavorful tomatoes I've had this summer. The server found where they bought them so I could buy them. The pasta dishes were delicious and the white wine selection the server recommended was a perfect fit for our entrees. The dessert we shared (chocolate confection) had the perfect balance of sweet and stronger chocolate flavor. We had a miss with off flavors with the 1st pasta "special" we ordered but they replaced it no problem with another selection. Really great handmade pasta and whole fish is a must. Wonderful service--very welcoming with ample seating. They have a fantastic pappardelle bolognese and just revisited and had a lovely summer ravioli with seasonal produce. Cozy energy inside and nice hug of wood-fired aroma. Exactly what I was looking for when I wanted Italian for Sunday lunch. We ordered the prosciutto appetizer, strozzapreti, and pappardelle. Everything was delicious; the pastas were cooked perfectly and their respective sauces were flavorful. We also ordered the espresso gelato which was a great ending to the meal. Service was friendly. We were greeted and seated as soon as we entered the restaurant. The restaurant decor is warm and welcoming; I especially like the cat picture above the bathroom sink. We really enjoyed our meal. Highlights were the two pastas: papardelle bolognese and pacheri with a slow cooked pork with olives and radicchio. I thought they were both delicious and would definitely come back and have them again. The night we went they featured a Rosso di montalcino which we really enjoyed. Their stemware when you order a bottle was also notably nice. We liked the appetizers. One was basically a tuna salad with big white beans and some pickled peppers. It had kind of a peasant-y look but the flavors were awesome. We also had poached pear with speck and taleggio. Liked it but not as much as the other things. Service was very good. Attentive but not obtrusive. I would definitely go back. My only complaint was that it was kind of hot where we were sitting. I'd sit in the front next time. read more
