I'm tired of not being in Italy... but Bottega on Valencia gave me my fix. Everything we ordered was exceptional ... the oxtail ragù pasta, the pizza, and especially the "build your own" pasta with tomato sauce. The sauce was so simple yet so ridiculously delicious... exactly the kind of simplicity done right that makes food in Italy unforgettable. No unnecessary frills, just quality ingredients and flavor that speaks for itself. We also loved the Montepulciano wine, and ending the meal with amaro and limoncello made the whole experience feel even more like being back in Italy. Francesco made the experience even better. He was warm, attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely such a pleasure to interact with throughout the night. The woman assisting our table was also absolutely lovely, and together they made the whole evening feel welcoming and special. Calamari was fresh and the batter didn't taste like old oil. Highly awaited review. I've anticipated trying Bottega as I've heard great things. No reservations are available, walk ins only so I was quite nervous that we'd have to wait. However, we were seated immediately. Our service was great. I wasn't impressed with the food. Our pasta was split into 2 which they did nicely, the vodka rigatoni. It wasn't anything great as our noodles were a bit undercooked, cold, and lacked flavor. I added a lot of red pepper flakes to compensate. I love the simplicity of the fettuccine pasta - garlic, cream, Parmigiano Reggiano, cracked pepper, salt. I was hungry but I couldn't finish my pasta at the restaurant. I don't think that fresh garlic was added (it tasted like garlic powder) cream was all in curds (probably with additives such as gums, stabilizers). I could not taste Parmigiano Reggiano, that's typically the highlight. The worst part? Fettuccine leftovers typically taste even better the next day. This was not the case. This is one of my favorite pasta places in SF. I absolutely love the salmon fettuccine - it's always perfectly cooked and amazing sauce. We also got the oxtail ragu, which had a really rich, unique flavor. The fried calamari is fun and comes with mixed vegetables too - always perfectly crispy with a light batter. Also free bread! Service is great and this place is so cute. They have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, but it does get busy on weekends so it might be a little bit of a wait. read more

I had heard positive things from friends and colleagues so I suggested this to some friends visiting from out of town and we came here on a weekend evening. The location was packed, so we signed up for the waitlist and waited alongside others on the waitlist before a table freed up. We waited at least 30 minutes, so I'd recommend using the Yelp waitlist if you can. The decor was vibrant and bright, which I think is a big reason the location is popular, like for Instagram-type photos and such. There was indoor and outdoor seating. Our table shared a standard pizza and a few pastas that seemed popular. The food was fair and tasteful. The service was ok. The waiter for our table was polite, and offered some notes when asked about particular menu items. They were pretty straight to the point, like a quick in and out to take our food and drinks order and give us the bill. The food took some time to come out, perhaps more than 20 minutes. I had an ok experience at this location,but it didn't live up to the hype my friends and colleagues raved about. I think it was probably due to it being a very busy night and my expectations were too high. Came to try out this restaurant with friends and it did not disappoint! I loved the ambiance - the interior is so beautifully decorated! The service was also great - the servers checked on us periodically, gave us recommendations, and overall took great care of us :) As for the food, we got the salsiccia e fungi pizza, gnocchi with pink vodka sauce, and the special - seafood spaghetti - to share. It was definitely enough food for three people, and they also offered us a lot of free bread! The pasta and gnocchi were both cooked perfectly. The seafood spaghetti was a bit spicy, but overall so flavorful and delicious. The gnocchi was soft and pillowy, and the sauce was tasty - creamy with a great tomato flavor. The pizza was also very flavorful wit a great combination of sausage and mushroom and onion. Overall, loved this meal! I would definitely come back to try new dishes and also the drinks !! read more

If the sauce in the wasn't with it, it wouldn't have been good. I got the Risotto and my partner got the rigatoni. Both were very good! The risotto had a good amount of mushrooms and sausage, could have been more truffle added. The rigatoni was great and saucy. The noodles could have been a bit more cooked, being al dente but on the harder side, still was good. Overall, probably would order take out, but not to sit down at. read more

The waiter recommended the coda alla vaccinara to us, which was an ox-tail ragu that was rich, hearty, and tender. This was my favorite because of the ox-tail element, and the meat was paired well with the wide noodles. The prosciutto pizza was well-balanced and fresh, and this was a close second-favorite. This place is absolutely gorgeous!! The first thing I saw when I walked in was how the ambiance captivated my eye. We started off with calamari and complimentary bread with olive oil and the for our main dish we had margharita pizza with Italian sausage and finished it with tiramisu for dessert. I came to Bottega with my sister on a Saturday morning. We stood at the entrance for about 10 minutes waiting to be seated, even though multiple staff members saw us there. There was a large party of about 15-20 people being attended to, and no one else paid attention to other guests. Once we were finally seated, it took another 15 minutes just for someone to take our order, and the food didn't arrive for another 20 minutes after that. Unfortunately, we were never checked on throughout the meal, which made the service feel inattentive and unorganized. Granting this a 5-star review here with one caveat, the waiters could be a little more friendly. We've been twice now. We are from the PNW but we frequent SFCA. We like the food and the vibe of the city... Bottega is no exception. Our first time, we came in for espresso martinis. Lord, those were delish! The bartender was so friendly, engaging, joked with us and had a legitimate good time. We really appreciated him. Came back the next night for dinner. It was cool outside but we took an outdoor table. Our waiter took drink orders. While we waited for the drinks, the waiter for the table next to us passed by... we asked for the outdoor heater to be turned on (we were extremely polite). He literally huffed at us and reluctantly turned it on. We thanked him and he ignored the gratitude. Nice looking guy, 20s, tats, crisp white shirt, looked professional but certainly didn't act like it. Food was excellent. All four of us got a different pasta that we thoroughly enjoyed. Drinks were strong and on-point. Wait was a little long but that can be overlooked when considering the quality of food. Service was great, unfortunately our wonderful waiter was shaded by his coworker who had a bit of attitude. After nearly 25 years in customer service and patient care... let me recommend one thing... don't let your teammates ruin your patron's (potentially) perfect experience. Updated review: this place has definitely popped off, especially around dinner time. Everybody had their birthday this particular evening, so all we heard was tables getting their dessert + birthday songs before our table did too! The food was good + pizza was large enough to split with more people, not to mention it was the same price as the pasta, totes worth it. However, the service fell really short this time around. We were a decently large group sat in the middle of the downstairs floor, and we were ready to give our orders in full, but they took our drink orders only at around the 20 minute mark. We weren't able to wave down a server for another half hour after that to place our food orders. It then look longer for them to give us our check, and then to let us pay (on one bill, no split). We reminded them a few times for the birthday dessert surprise, which was fine when it finally came out. It's also a bit overstimulating with the loud music and projector on the wall, so I couldn't talk loud enough over the table with my friends. I would come back for a meal not during a Friday or weekend evening so I'm not in the same restaurant for 2+ hours. read more

We popped in at 5pm on a Saturday and were seated immediately. There were plenty of open tables until around 7pm when the restaurant started filling up. For apps, we ordered the arancini ($14 for 3), brussel sprouts ($12), and parma ($13 for 4 slices). Everything was great and came out relatively quickly. The arancini came with a pea dipping sauce which was tasty. For mains, we ordered the vodka pink pasta with chicken ($28), mezzemaniche with tomato sauce ($24), salsiccia pizza ($22), and guanciale ($23). By and large, we thought the pastas were better than the pizzas. Both our pastas were rigatoni dishes, and the rigatoni was cooked perfectly - not too al dente but not soggy with a good bite. The rigatoni Bottega uses is on the thicker side, so each piece was relatively substantial. The pizzas were fine but could use more sauce and felt a bit like eating bland bread. Service was great from start to finish - welcoming, attentive, friendly. One small nit is towards the end of our meal, some folks came by to clear our table in its entirety as we were still sitting there, so we felt a bit rushed as we were boxing our leftovers and wrapping up conversations. read more

Botegga on Valencia is on my list of neighborhood favorites. To start with I love the ambiance, the high ceilings, open air feeling of the restaurant...casual and so welcoming. The service stands out. Luca was our server on a recent stop for early dinner. We sat in the window seats enjoying the brussels sprouts appetizer followed by delicious fresh pasta mezzemaniche boscaiola with vodka sauce. We came to Bottega because of the great reviews it has here on yelp. While the restaurant is lively with a trendy vibe, and our server was good, I would say the food is just okay. We ordered the shrimp scampi, the Mezzemaniche Boscaiola, and the chicken parm. The shrimp in the shrimp scampi tasted fresh, but the sauce was unnaturally thick and gloopy which reminded me almost of a lemon chicken sauce that you'd get from a Chinese takeout restaurant. It also did not taste like fresh lemon and herbs which is what I expect from a good scampi. The pasta was decent and had a good chew but it did not wow us in any way. The chicken parm was visually appealing but was bland and really just tasted like cheese. One theme that applied to all dishes was that everything was under seasoned and lacked salt. Whenever I'm in the Bay, visiting this restaurant is always a MUST! The food, service and vibes are amazing -- all for a great price too. My favorite pasta to get is the Sacchetti ($22); the sweet taste with the walnuts and pears is just chef's kiss. We always get the Prosciutto Pizza too ($23), so yummy. This time my friends and I tried the Mozzarella in Carrozza ($16) too, and it was ok! You also get free bread once you're seated, and they can add pepper and fresh cheese to your dishes if you'd like. They don't take any reservations so definitely prepare to wait! My friends and I went on a Saturday night around 6:50 pm and got seated at 8 pm. Thankfully, there's a lot of other places to see while waiting so we tried out a wine bar nearby. Their interior is nicely decorated with plenty of photo opportunities and felt comfortable. We sat down and they only had one server and they were clearly understaffed. Disappointing. So last summer, I paid Bottega a visit, and sat at the bar. The food and service were perfect. I couldn't have asked for more. Well, I visited again this past weekend and was extremely disappointed. You see, it was my sister's birthday and she had picked out Bottega to have her b-day dinner at. Since I had a good experience previously, I told her she would love Bottega. But here were the issues we experienced this past weeekend. After a long wait for a table (that part was okay since we knew Bottega doesn't do reservations), the hostess came up to us and said our tables were next to be bussed and pushed together. She even gestured towards a party getting up, implying that those were the tables to which she was referring. Well after speaking to us, a girl then walks up to the hostess and greets her with a warm hug. They then start conversing, and it was very obvious they knew each other personally. Mind you, this girl had just walked up off the street, and had not been waiting with everyone else for the past hour. Then of course, only a short time later, the hostess walks that girl to the very tables she had told us were ours. Mind you, this girl was by herself, so she was still waiting on her party to arrive. Now after an even longer wait, like 30 more minutes, we finally get our tables. Sadly the server was horrendously inattentive, very disinterested, and even forgot to put in my sister's order. During our dinner, I could see the restaurant manager constantly hovering and being very physically affectionate with a member of the group that snaked our table. It became very obvious that he is in some type of relationship with one of the girls. So now it makes sense how they got to jump the waitlist. In summary, getting our table snaked, poor service, and them forgetting my sister's (the birthday girl) order, I can resolutely say Bottega ruined what was supposed to be a special occasion. Im super bummed since I had a great first experience with Bottega, yet this is how we were treated on a second visit. I cannot in good faith recommend Bottega to anyone.
