Came here on a Friday night with no reservations but we were able to be seated at the bar. The workers were warm and nice, though I think they forgot us sometimes - we had to ask multiple times for a to-go box and even to pay. The food itself was good. Standard portions, not too big but not too small. I got the carbonara, which was great. Nothing that I would change. My partner got a pappardelle dish. Hidden gem with great pasta and even better service. This was our second time visiting Roma Antica. It is located on a cute restaurant and shopping street. Their cocktails are amazing. I tried the bosciola (both cream sauce and tomato sauce), and the carbonara. BOSCIOLA: obviously the flavor is different depending on which sauce you choose. The tomato sauce makes it more like a ragu. The cream sauce is really smooth and decadent (but not as cheesy tasting as a carbonara). The Italian sausage in it is AMAZING. I've never tasted Italian sausage like it--it's very similar to a Taiwanese sausage. A little sweet, and not as herbal forward. Nicely grilled with a slight crust. CARBONARA: really delicious and decadent. It's more salty than the bosciola and a lot more heavy. It's a dry cheesy sauce with salty bites of cured pork belly. This is definitely my go to spot for great Italian food in the area! It can get busy if you come in at prime time 6-7 pm on a weekend, so we always try to avoid those times if we want to get seated right away. The staff are always so great and attentive :) We usually get a margarita pizza with prosciutto, which always comes out delicious every time. The pizzas are a decent size and they are always generous with the prosciutto which is nice. We tried the lamb shank last night and my boyfriend really enjoyed it - if you're on the hungrier side please do yourself a favor and try! It comes with a nice side of potatoes and spinach. As I was eating, I found a worm in the arugula that had made its way onto my fork. I immediately pointed it out to the server, who brushed it off without any acknowledgment or apology. What followed was even more frustrating. When we later asked for boxes, the same server returned and casually asked if everything was okay, despite never addressing the worm. I gave a polite smile, but he pressed further and asked, "Are you sure?" At that point, I had to say, "Yes, except for the worm in my food." Again, no response. The whole interaction felt dismissive and, in the moment, intimidating. I couldn't help but wonder if he would have acted the same way with a different customer. At any decent restaurant, an issue like this would be handled with professionalism, either by replacing the dish or removing it from the bill. That did not happen here. I will not be returning and would urge others to think twice before dining at this pretentious Italian restaurant. The meatballs were the worst ever. We were seated right away at 6:30-6:45ish, but it got busy right when we were seated so I think there was a bit of a wait after us. They don't take reservations after 5:30 according to their website, so I called ahead to double check that they took walk ins and if there was a long wait. I believe we were seated in the original area of the restaurant, not the extension. The tables are quite close, but it wasn't too big of a deal for us. It has a comforting homey atmosphere and the wait staff were very familial towards the guests and one another! The foccacia that was provided was fine. It didn't have a crispy crust and fell apart easily, mostly because there was tomato baked in. I ordered the carbonara and it was great! It wasn't overly salty and the pasta was cooked perfectly al dente. I would highly recommend it. Overall, I would recommend dining here and would come again :) read more

We had such a wonderful Sunday night dinner here, dining alfresco. I love that the outdoor patio is covered not only with heat lamps, but they give every seat a little blanket as well. Our beet salad was OK, you should chop the beats differently, so it's not so easy confusing with cranberries, but I really appreciated that they split the salad into two without us having to ask. The kids meals here were amazing. My son's pasta with marinara sauce and meatballs was so tasty that we ended up ordering extra meatballs. My daughter's cheese pizza was also very good. We loved that they shaped it as a Mickey Mouse. The bread was so fresh that even though we didn't order a regular pizza, I can tell that their pizzas must be really spot on. As a pescatarian, I regularly end up ordering the Branzino and this was one of the best ones I've had. They were two fillets that were both really juicy and tender. I find a lot of branzino dishes end up being kind of dry and thin. My husband was so in love with his trophie pasta - pesto sauce was so tasty, and the pasta was really fresh. The tomatoes were really juicy and sweet. Hard to tell if they were fresh tomatoes, or slightly sun-dried. We started with the eggplant croquettes and they were an excellent start. Best croquettes I've ever tried. For our mains we got the oxtail pappardelle and the prosciutto pinsa. We visited on a Sunday at lunch and were pleased to find no wait at all. The restaurant had ample outdoor seating available, which made for a pleasant dining experience. They also had a private hall set up for another party, showing they can accommodate larger groups. What really made our visit special was Peppe, our waiter, who was absolutely amazing! He kept us engaged throughout the meal, seemed to know exactly what we wanted to order, and provided great recommendations that enhanced our experience. 4.5/5 Complimentary Focaccia was a nice touch that set the tone for the meal. It was soft and a bit oily, but in a good way that felt more premium than the regular bread you might get at other restaurants. This showed attention to detail right from the start. 3.75/5 Cacio e Pepe was good but didn't quite reach amazing status. The noodles were cooked nicely, but the dish could have used a bit more salt and stronger flavor from the cheese. It tasted slightly watered down, which prevented it from being the standout version of this classic dish that I was hoping for. 4.5/5 Sorrentina alla Vodka without Meat was flavored really nicely and showcased some creative touches! Adding burrata to the vodka sauce was actually a brilliant idea that I hadn't thought about before, and it worked beautifully. They were also thoughtful enough to serve the meat on the side for my girlfriend, which was a nice accommodation. The pasta shape they used was interesting and unique - while I would have preferred a classic rigatoni for that traditional feel, this combination was still enjoyable and showed they're willing to put their own spin on classics. 3.5/5 Tiramisu had nicely flavored cream that was tasty, but the execution fell a bit short. The ladyfingers were too dry and could have soaked up more of the coffee and liqueur mixture, which would have given it that perfect melt-in-your-mouth texture that makes tiramisu so special. I'm really glad we finally tried Roma Antica! It's a solid Italian place in SF, and I can definitely see why it's rated highly in the area. The vodka sauce pasta has earned a spot as one of my top places to get this dish in the city. Between the quality ingredients, thoughtful service from Peppe, and creative takes on Italian classics, this is a restaurant I would absolutely return to. Reservations from 11 - 6 pm and walk-ins only after 6 pm. [MUST TRY] RISOTTO WITH ITALIAN SAUSAGE (5/5) Some of the best risotto I've had in a while. The rice was cooked nicely, the dish was perfectly cheesy, herby, and infused with deep truffle oil, and they were extremely generous with the sausage chunks. Think of them more like chicken meatballs vs. sliced up sausages. Not listed on the menu but offered as a special (sometimes with sausage, sometimes with short rib). 2. LAMB SHANK (3/5) It was a large shank but it felt like 60% bone and 40% very tough-to-cut meat otherwise. Not only was the meat not tender, but we were only given blunt butter knives to try to cut the meat. The shank was served on a bed of mashed potatoes with a side of fried Brussels sprouts, which were actually very nicely fried without being too oily.
