My friend and I just happened to walk into Flour + Water at 8:30 PM on a Thursday and were thrilled to discover the late night prefix. $65 for a 5 course meal and another $35 for the wine pairing. Both are a total steal. The trick is to order different dishes and then share because the portions are pretty generous. We got the halibut crudo, a cheese stuffed pasta, mussels pasta, lamb ragout, and chocolate budino. Our server, Coleman, was great. He explained every wine (my favorite was their take on a Lambrusco that paired fabulously with the cheese stuffed pasta). Our lamb pasta came out over salted and he immediately got us a new one. This spot has been on my list for a while so I finally made the time to go for dinner. I made the reservation ahead of time through Resy. It's definitely a spot where you need to plan ahead to make a reservation. I'm happy to say that Flour + Water lived up to the hype! Everything we ordered was delicious, you could taste the quality of the ingredients and see the technique put into every dish. The interior was also beautiful, refined without being stuffy. It's a great place to take someone you want to impress or for a special occasion. We were trying to decide between the pasta tasting menu and normal menu. We landed on the normal menu since we wanted to try a pizza. We ordered the pole beans, puttanesca pizza, corn cappelletti, and the duck triangoli. Everything was amazing but the pasta dishes stood out! They were creative, delicious and very unique. I definitely want to come back to try the pasta tasting menu. The desserts were also great. The strawberry pavlova was to die for! You don't see pavlovas on dessert menus very often so I had to get it. I came in with a reservation at 9:00 p.m. on a Tuesday and was seated almost immediately. One thing that surprised me was that the menu was very different from the other locations I've visited. I was expecting the larger pizza selection, so that was a bit unexpected. The restaurant itself has a nice atmosphere with dim lighting, throwback pop music, and cute decor. We ordered the Pork Bianca pizza, the porcini pasta, and the duck pasta. The pizza was definitely the highlight. It had a sweet, tangy, citrusy flavor that caught me off guard at first, but it ended up being really enjoyable. The pasta portions, however, were quite small. The porcini pasta tasted a little too sour for my liking, and the flavors felt unbalanced. The duck pasta was unfortunately pretty bland and didn't leave much of an impression. The service also fell short. A server in a blue dress with braids cleared one of our plates without asking if we were finished, even though there was still food left on it, which made the interaction feel awkward. She was not pleasant. Later, when it was time to pay, she simply tapped our card, processed the payment, and walked away without saying a word or acknowledging us. Flour + Water had been on my list since we moved to San Francisco, and after finally making it in, I can see why it's one of the city's most well know Italian spots. Space is trendy but comfortable. Went with 3 others and shared the following dishes. Josey Baker sourdough and cultured parm butter. Warm bread, nice crust, and butter was really good. Todays Ricotta with honeycomb, Sicilian olive oil, and sourdough tigelle was excellent. Creamy and fresh with the warm tigelle serving as the perfect vehicle. The Koshihikari arancini was probably the table favorite. Crispy, cheesy, and packed with flavor from the smoked mozzarella, eggplant, and basil. Pole Beans As I've said before, if burrata is on the menu, I'm probably ordering it. Fresh beans and The burrata, smoked tomato, and miso bagna cauda worked really well together. Margherita pizza. Great fresh ingredients, plenty of flavor, and a beautifully charred crust. The center was a really soggy surprising for a place well known for its pizza. Now for the Pastas... Corn Cappelletti Sweet corn, blueberry, brown butter, ricotta salata, and Fresno chili. An unexpected combination that somehow worked perfectly. This was the groups favorite. Porcini Gnocchetti Sardi As a lover of all things porcini, this was my favorite dish of the night. Rich mushroom ragù, perfectly cooked pasta, and deep earthy flavors. Rainbow Scarpinocc Our server mentioned this is one of Flour + Water's signature dishes, so we had to try it. Beloved restaurant that is known for their pasta. This restaurant is located in the Mission area of SF. I was in the city with some family and we were trying to get something to eat before we went over to a concert pretty close by at the Chase center. We actually made reservations to a different restaurant, but my brother and sister-in-law wanted to check out the wait. We were able to get seated within five minutes and we canceled the other reservation because I was told that it is notoriously hard to get a reservation here. We ordered a few things to share, including the ricotta, arancini, and chicories to start. We ordered a pizza and a couple of the pastas as well. I can't remember exactly which pizza we ordered, but I think it was the amatriciana. For the pastas we ordered the duck casoncelli and the taleggio scarpinocc. Both pastas and pizza were all beautifully presented and delicious. Just a great meal all around. The service here was very attentive and helpful as well. I had high expectations for this place from what I had heard about Flour + Water but I thought this place was simply okay. They are connected to one another, but I did not realize that one side is the restaurant and the other side is a pizzeria/takeout which is the side that I walked through and when I tried to order, the lady told me that I should probably eat on the other side instead, but there were seats in the pizzeria area and the beer was like a dollar or two cheaper on the pizzeria side. She did mention that it's typically more for takeout or if we want single slices so I guess it made sense for us to eat on the restaurant side? With the natural lighting, the restaurant is absolutely beautiful. I think I was here around like 3 PM so I was seated immediately. I don't remember the actual name for it, but we got the meat lovers pizza and I don't know, it was good but I think what threw me off was the sausage that was in it I forgot what it's technically called. And the waiter did come and ask if we wanted Parmesan we said yes he stepped away and never came back, but I get it sometimes things pop up and you forget, but I'm not gonna lie, I was a little salty that he gave his attention to the table behind me because they got their Parmesan immediately. We went to Flour + Water with sort of high expectations, but overall the food was good but slightly a bit underwhelming. I really enjoyed the gnocchi, and the portion sizes were larger than expected. The pizzas were also really good! The dough was chewy and perfectly baked. I just wish they had crushed pepper! There were 5 of us and our server recommended ordering 12-14 dishes. That felt like a lot, so we settled on 10 dishes (the menu is also small so we had to double up on some orders) but even that ended up being way too much food. We had a ton of leftovers, so I'd suggest ordering more conservatively and adding on if needed rather than strictly following that recommendation. We were a bit disappointed by that guidance as we could've saved some money and didn't have to double up on items. Been wanting to come here for years, and finally made it for the pasta tasting course. It was -- pretty good? Okay, I think? Nothing world shattering, but solid. A few notes: * Ambiance is cool. Has a kind of neighborhood-y vibe, and service was friendly. * Maybe just an off night, but the course pacing was quite strange. Initially the dishes were coming pretty fast and furious, but there were seemingly interminable waits in between the last 3-4 courses. We had to supplement with bread to hold us over, and my wife (who doesn't usually care about this stuff) made several comments on it. * They charged us the (incredibly stupid) mandatory service charge twice on our bill, which I caught. I'm hoping this was unintentional, but as someone who things mandatory service fees are nonsensical anyway, this left a bad taste in my mouth. * I really liked the creative take on many dishes, but 1-2 of them were a touch more than al denté texture-wise, and there was a resonant flavor in 2 or 3 of the dishes that felt eerily similar and kind of muddled everything together. I'm not sure if it's a knock to say the dessert may have been my favorite dish of the night, but it's true. Came with some coworkers on a weekday, and my coworker made reservations ahead of time. We got the tasting menu because we all had decision fatigue. Overall, some of the dishes were quite salty. I did enjoy the crab pasta dish, and the starters/appetizers. It was just the right amount of food in my opinion. If I'm in the area, would give it another try but probably pass on the tasting menu. I think that we were more prepared for the pasta textures this time. So we had a way better experience. This is not a soft pasta place. The textures are more on the al dente side. We were part of the early bird crowd so we were seated immediately. Everyone we encountered was friendly and helpful. We were seated by a warm window with great people watching and since we went early the noise level was very low. The summer lettuces were punchy and crisp: tahini vinaigrette, pecorino sardo, toasted sesame. We loved. The two pasta that we got, taleggio scarpinocc seemed to be a staple and was tasty with the aceto balsamico. The porcini gnocchetti sardi is a seasonal pasta with mushroom ragú, spring onion, caciotti was crunch and warm and hearty. We end with the corn ice cream in a waffle cone with toasted marshmallow. To start off, the hostess at the front was very kind and seated us as fast as she could even though our table at the reserved time was not yet ready. When we asked about options on the menu, he was curt but tried to explain as he could. throughout the course of our meal, we repeatedly asked for water and were not given water. We also askEd someone to take our picture three times and finally somebody came over. Came here for my birthday and it was so good! We sat at the bar and had the tasting course with the wine pairing. Absolutely loved it and would highly recommend. The journey that the tasting course took us on was wonderful and hit all the salt, acid, and light heat notes in your pallet. Additionally, the wine pairings made sense and complimented each dish. Although it is expensive, just know sometimes the servers may or may not pour with a heavy hand so you are more than likely going to feel like you're getting your moneys worth. Finally managed to get a reasonably timed reservation for a standard table on a Sunday night. Beautiful restaurant with lovely ambiance, and beautiful ceiling and lights! All the servers were so kind and friendly - we can for a birthday and everyone said happy birthday multiple times it was super thoughtful. We had between two people 2 starters 3 pastas (one for vegetarian and two for meat eater) The arancini was so tasty and went well with the order of house made ricotta and the bread. The ricotta and honey comb were so perfect together. For the vegetarian pasta I had the carbonara, such a fun pasta shape with a hole in the middle - paired with the house hot sauce it was perfect! For the meat we had the squid ink - bright aromatic and a lovely chew from the shape. The other was the 5 spice duck ravioli which was bold, flavourful, and blended Asian and Italian flavours! All pastas were cooked perfectly not too hard and not over cooked. We had wine and a spritz. For food we shared the: - Heirloom tomato: Absolutely delicious! Always great when in season but the way they served it with a ton of shaved parm and pine nuts, there was so much umami and it felt like the perfect way to start the meal - Black pepper bucatini: With lobster and smoked carbonara, this felt really lucious, especially with the egg yolk on top. Great to share with someone else to indulge on this - Basil garganelli: Really great basil pasta with pork sugo, chili and shaved parm. Great flavor without being too rich or heavy. A good choice if you want a lighter, brighter protein pasta dish Finally, although we were full, we couldn't resist trying the olive oil cake after seeing a nearby table order the delicious looking dessert. Upon checking in, the hostess told us that they'd be able to bring a dessert out and sing a song for the birthday person. We had absolutely no complaints about the food, and were having a good time until the very end. Upon receiving the dessert menu, we asked an employee who was not our server about the dessert + song, which we initially thought were complementary from our initial conversation with the hostess. Apparently we misunderstood what the hostess had told us, as the employee let us know that they would only bring out a dessert and sing a song if we order & pay for the dessert. Came here as my first ever meal visiting SF 2 years ago and have always wanted to come back with more people to try out more pastas. We came extremely hungry and got the little gem salad, arancini, and ricotta and bread to start with. We then got all 6 pastas on the menu, which the waiter initially only recommended 3-4 apps and 3-4 pastas but we devoured them all! We loved all the different styles of pastas, they were all super unique and none were similar to the others. Our favorite would have to be the crab beet spaghetti (purple/pink looking pasta), it was super fresh and the noodle texture was incredible. Went there last night with a group of 4 and put our names down. The host said it would be an hour and 45 minute wait and recommended we go to the bar down the street until they can seat us so we did and grabbed some fries and bites at the bar until our table was ready. We get the text and head back to get seated. We decide we aren't as hungry anymore because the small bites and we decide to order two pizzas. The waiter very rudely says "that's it? You guys are only ordering two pizzas?" With a terrible attitude for absolutely no reason. Not sure if he was upset we weren't spending more money but either way why would he feel the need to be rude for us ordering two pizzas and two beers?? The pizza then gets there within 5 minutes and it felt like they were trying to rush us out the restaurant when the host had already mentioned we had until 9PM since they had a reservation for that table at that time. To top it off the sausage on the pizza was undercooked and the broccolini was awful. Safe to say we are not returning here. The host was very nice but the waiter needs to find a new job. read more

Recently visited for my moms birthday and it was a memorable dinner. Service was friendly, with an explanation of each dish as it was served, dishes timed perfectly, water cup constantly being filled, and was not rushed to order or leave as we definitely took our time. Ambience is clean, modern, and on the darker side (parents had to use phone flashlight to read the menu lol). All dishes were fresh and unique, pasta was al dente enough which reminded the party of our Italy trip. Presentation for each dish was on point, which made it pretty exciting as they brought each one to the table. The Flour + Water spritz - 5/5 - highly enjoyed it! Refreshing, not too sweet. Josey Baker Sourdough - 3/5 - Fresh soft and warm sourdough, 4 pieces. The butter was soft and airy, although did not add much flavor. Cherries & prosciutto - 4/5 - crispy thin prosciutto pieces with fresh semisweet yellow cherries with the olive taste coming through as the main flavor. Koshihikari arancini - 5/5 - small bites that packed a crispy, cheesy, flavorful punch. Artichoke fonduta felt subtle and the saltiness of the cheese was the main flavor. Salsiccia Bianca - 5/5 - hands down our favorite item of the night! It was thin, fresh, & lightly greasy (in a good way). Arugula chunks were a nice touch to cut the saltiness of the pizza. Taleggio Scarpinocc - 5/5 - my favorite pasta dish! Simple, yet beautifully plated. Parmesan flavor galor with the balsamic adding the perfect sweetness. Sauce was lightly creamy. Porcini Campanelle - 4/5 - the rest of the party's favorite pasta dish. The black garlic really shined here, blending well with the umami noodles. Couldn't really taste the kale but appreciated the color and fiber lol. Saffron Sorprese - 3/5 - the noodles were smaller, would've liked to use a spoon to get a fuller scoop. Flavor did remind me of a lightly buttery clam chowder with super crunchy bacon bits, especially with the thin sliced potatoes. Clam was a tad rubbery. These flavors would be awesome on a pizza. Ramp Caramelle - 3/5 - Looked like small green candies. This dish felt the most al dente. The veal was more like a short rib consistency but even softer. Flavor was not too salty. Olive cake - 4/5 - a generous sized piece! Moist inside, crunchier exterior and served with berries. Great way to end the meal. Really good pasta and very friendly service. My friend and I shared: (1) "today's ricotta," (2) Josey Baker sourdough, (3) ginger caramelle, and (4) taleggio scapinocc. The ricotta and honey had a lovely balance of flavors, and the sourdough was fluffy and great for mopping up various sauces. The pastas were very layered in their flavors, and splitting the two provided nice contracts between a slightly sweet pasta and a more acidic pasta. Both were delicious. For dessert, we shared the chocolate bundino, which was decadent but not too sweet. Service was informative and friendly. read more

Flour + Water has delicious and fresh pastas. The bread they serve can hold its own too and is so delicious! The space is cozy and bustling. The service is quick and attentive. Would recommend in SF! read more
