Top 5 fried chicken I've had around the Bay Area. The chicken was tender but what really made it stand out was the spices within the fried batter. So much flavor going on and it made it fun to eat. The Mac and cheese was really cheesy and heavy but that's what makes it good! I really enjoyed the Jambalaya with chicken and sausage. Seasoning was great and worked well with chicken and sausage. I wasn't a huge fan of the Brussel sprouts. They soaked up a lot of oil and the flavor got tiring quickly. I've had the beignet here before and I wanted to try again but unfortunately I still did not really enjoy. I wouldn't come here if you want a light meal. If you want a heavy meal, it's worth it 100%. OMG - i've been dying to go here for years and finally made it. My mom is from the south so my standards are HIGH for southern food and this did not disappoint. We came for brunch and I had decision paralysis, but I went with the shrimp hushpuppies, cheesy grits and a biscuit on the side. My boyfriend got the french toast. I had the fried catfish with collard greens, Mac-n-cheese and a biscuit. My friend had the blackened catfish, with red beans & rice, collard greens and French fries. We tried to call Brenda's to order food for pick up, but they didn't answer the phone. We used the app and the pick up time was dictated as 15 minutes. No option to change it. My husband was getting out of the hospital and I figured we could get there in time. Within a few minutes of the order being confirmed and my credit card being charged, I received an alert that the order would be ready in an hour! My husband was extremely fragile and couldn't tolerate any wait, let alone an hour. We live in Marin County and the idea was that we would get dinner to eat as soon as we got home. I tried calling but again the phone just rang for a long time and then cut off. I tried to call the other store. No answer. Door Dash had no telephone number and I texted them. My husband was feeling worse his caregiver and I had to get him home. I kept trying to reach Brenda's, the time kept getting longer. We were almost home when we received an update that the food was ready. Over an hour later than the initially scheduled time. We had been customers for 20 years, both dine in and take out. We were so enamored with Brenda's that we took our neighbors there and picked up food for our family reunion from them. We weren't trying to reach them at peak times--Wednesday afternoon. I've been coming to Brenda's for years, to both locations but this one is so easy to get to for me and the food and service is always outstanding. Can get loud but we've always come at times where it's not too busy. I always make a reservation just in case because it can get packed in there. I'm one to never stray away from something I know is good so I stick to my usual... the fried chicken! My sides stay the same as well- red beans and rice, fried okra and the collard greens. The smoky and savory collard greens is a sure winner, the fried okra Is my absolute favorite side dish though. The chicken is always crunchy and seasoned well. Consistency is always on point. We've recently veered from the norm and got adventurous trying the stuffed pork chop and that now may be my favorite entree there. Made a last minute decision to grab dinner at Brenda's Meat & Three because I happened to be close by on an errand and haven't been back in a while. I parked a couple blocks away (but probably could've found parking closer) and walked over and grabbed a seat at the counter. It was busy but still had a few seats and tables available at around 6pm on a Friday. Brenda's has a nice homey welcoming vibe inside, and the workers are always super friendly. I got a meat and three with Brenda's fried chicken, mac and cheese, green beans, and beets. The plate comes out nice and hot which keeps everything warm as you eat, and the portions are generous. You get to pick which cuts of meat you want for the chicken and I opted for a thigh and 2 drumsticks. The chicken is hot and crispy - the batter isnt too thick or heavy, and the chicken is tender and not dry at all. It goes really well with the sweet chili! The sides were all good, and the cold slightly sweet slightly tangy beets were a nice refreshing break from the richness of the chicken and the super cheesy thick Mac and cheese. The green beans were tender and had good umami flavor and had little bits of tomatoes too. It was a super satisfying meal and came with generous portions - I had leftovers. We had some friends visiting in town for the weekend, and from our last experience here, we decided to take them to Brenda's for lunch. The place on the weekend was packed. Luckily a table was just getting up and they were able to clean it up and get us seated right away. We started the meal off with one my favorites, the crawfish beignets, and those were as good as I remembered. For my main I went with their biscuits and gravy with a fried chicken cutlet and scrambled eggs. Honestly wasn't my favorite dish I've had here. There wasn't any real standout flavors and ended up just adding salt and hot sauce. I'd stick with more of their lunch and dinner items next time around. My girlfriend got the gumbo and a side of fried chicken and Mac n cheese. The fried chicken and Mac were as good as remembered, I mean probably some of the best Mac n cheese, I could eat that everyday. My girlfriend and I both agreed that the gumbo had way too much okra and was the dominate flavor. We've ordered this before to go so maybe it was just an off day. During this day, they had the ceiling fans running and I think it may have affected the temperature of the food because all our food was room temp pretty quickly after it being brought to our table. Service here has always been good but this latest visit left a bit to be desired. I eat quickly so they cleared my plate away, no problem. But the others were clearly still eating and the server was trying to pick up plates and even dropped the check off when not everyone at the table was done eating. Brenda's Meat & Three is an authentic New Orleans experience. Maybe not the decor or look of the place, but the food and even the background music does the trick. I haven't been to New Orleans in many years, but my friends who I was with are both regular visitors to the Big Easy. I have been to the original Brenda's Soul Food a few times, so I was familiar with a lot of the flavors here. The thing that sets them a part is their "meat & 3 sides" deal. They have a nice variety of meats and sides you can order, and the costs range between $24 and $28. I ordered the BBQ spare ribs, mashed potatoes, garlic spinach, and red beans and rice. Everything was really solid here. The ribs were perfectly tender and The BBQ sauce was a little spicy, smoky and not very sweet. I also got to try the fried chicken, which is really crispy with perfectly moist meat. I tried the meatloaf, which is also a standout. For dessert we tried their apple beignets, which were great! Lastly, my friends who ordered a Hurricane and I was happy to try it. This drink was very boozy, but in a good way, and had a wonderful balance of sweet and tart. The server here was very friendly, but not super knowledgable about the food here. He had to ask the kitchen a couple of questions, so was probably new here. Super flavorful food! From the appetizers to the brunch, everything was oh soul good. Overall the food was fresh and well prepared, not oily or overly salty. This is a (mostly) vegetarian review. We had the: 1. Potato hash (5/5) - Seasoning on the potatoes was great and cut into perfectly sized bits 2. Okra and tomato maque choux (5/5) : Fresh, well seasoned, healthy 3. Florentine Benedict (5/5): I am a convert to Benedict's on biscuits now. Biscuits are the perfect texture for it, softer and more breakable than a traditional English muffin but firm enough for a bite. And the creole hollandaise was a super creamy but light and soo well seasoned. 4. Special of the day shrimp pot pie (5/5) - my friend tried this and upon the first bite she let out a loud "mmmmmm" so I take it that it was good. The portion was very generous and came with a side. 5. Walnut mollasses coffee - very good as well. They tend to be busy so a reservation is recommended especially on weekend. Service was prompt and the food came really quickly too. Nice tall ceilinged interiors, lots of light and semi casual. There's a little open air patio seating at the back as well. 2.5-3 stars. We've not been back to this particular Brenda's in a while and today's breakfast affirmed why. Service is excellent and staff are nice enough which is the best part of the experience. Hubby ordered the 2 eggs with biscuit gravy and added a fried chicken cutlet. The fried chicken is delicious and I would return just for the fried chicken. The biscuit was hard, crunchy which tells me it's day old or more. I make biscuits at home all the time and they should not be hard. Hubby says the gravy was good. I tried the gumbo again. Spicy with plenty of rice, sausage, okra and 2 shrimps. It was good. The Flight of 4 beignets were disappointing. The dough was hard on the exterior and inside cake or bread-like. Not soft and fluffy like the beignets we've tried in NOLA. The filling of the apple was OK with tiny cubed apple pieces, the chocolate one was with Ghirardelli chocolate, the plain was like a thicker, heavier donut. I think I liked the filling of the savory one the best, reminded me of a thicker gumbo filling. Overall, I would skip the beignets next time and just get the fried chicken. read more
