Um Ma is tucked away between 9th and Lincoln and it's definitely a hidden gem. They have a few tables at the front but most of their tables are in the back patio area which is nicely covered giving a pretty cool kickback vibe. Service was pretty quick once we got our order in. The food was amazing. Chicken and Kalbi were definitely one of our favorites. And the bone marrow with the cheese! Each plate is sharing size so definitely bring some friends!
I was craving fried chicken on Sunday and originally planned to go to San Tung, but they were completely packed with about 20 parties on the waitlist. We ended up here instead. The restaurant is small, with a few tables in the front and a heated patio in the back. We chose the patio and stayed comfortable throughout the meal. We ordered the beef short ribs, pork belly, seafood pancake, and chicken wings (half honey butter and half ginger sesame soy). The beef short ribs were the standout of the meal, tender, flavorful, and perfectly balanced between savory, sweet, and smoky. Unfortunately, the other dishes were less impressive. The pork belly was sliced too thin, causing most of the fat to render out on the grill and leaving it a bit dry. The seafood pancake was too thick and heavy on the batter, making it soft and doughy inside when I would have preferred a crispier texture. The chicken wings were just okay. The honey butter flavor wasn't evenly coated, so I mostly tasted sweetness rather than the rich buttery flavor I was expecting. The ginger sesame soy wings were also underwhelming. I couldn't really taste any ginger, and the sauce was applied too heavily, making the flavor overly thick and unbalanced. Another surprise was the limited selection of banchan. They only offered four varieties, which is the fewest I've seen at a Korean restaurant. Service was okay, nothing particularly memorable, but no complaints either. Overall, the beef short ribs were excellent, but the rest of the meal didn't justify the price point. I'm glad I gave it a try, but one visit was enough for me.
I came to Um Ma for mine and my mom's birthday last month. We had 6 adults and 2 toddlers and were seated in the large room right next to the outdoor patio. They have high chairs available! We ordered a bunch of dishes to share but my favorites were the rockin roe, seafood pancake and the corn cheese with bone marrow! Everything was really good and by the end of the meal, I was surprised I never visited before! Our server was Mikaela and she was super sweet, she even wiped down the high chairs before we put the kids in.
I really like supporting neighborhood restaurants and have been wanting to dine at Um Ma for a long time, so I organized a group dinner here. Each person ordered whatever he/she felt like eating and a group of us shared a large order of their KFC. Everything was good, but my sul lang tang could have used more seasoning; the depth of flavor just wasn't there for me. Since a whole group of us ordered one platter of wings, I didn't really get a chance to taste the different sauces they offered; truth be told, I'm not even sure which sauce was on my piece! Since we were a group, we sat at the communal table in the Mural Room. As it turned out, it really isn't a "room" but just a space with two communal tables. It was just inside the back patio, and since the patio doors remained open, it was rather chilly. It was okay, but the table that was said to be able to handle ten diners was very crowded with just nine of us. Fortunately for me, I was on the bench with only three others; the five on the other side of the table kept hitting elbows! I wish for nothing but success for Um Ma, and judging by the crowd of diners on that Friday, it should be achievable. I think for myself, though, it'll be awhile before I return.
We came here after discovering that Pàng, which just opened nearby and is so new it doesn't have times listed on Google Maps yet, is closed on Wednesdays. Anyways, Um Ma has been on my list of places to try, so it worked out. I got the bibimbap for my main course. It comes with veggies, purple rice, and an onsen egg in a hot stone bowl. It costs upwards of $5 to add any type of protein. I just got it as is without any additions. It arrived steaming hot, but the veggies were still crisp. It tasted very fresh. We also tried the seafood pancake, which I thought was just okay. It had more of a Japanese than Korean flavor since it came with fish flakes and a soy sauce based dip. Overall the food carried elements of California and Japanese fusion. The vibes were really nice here. Sitting on the back patio at picnic tables surrounded by trees, strings of lights, and space heaters, it felt like being in a ground-level treehouse. Service wasn't bad, but it felt a bit rushed. The place wasn't packed by any means so not sure what prompted the rush. Overall the food and vibes are good here, so I'm glad i got to check it out. I think this would be a great place to meet with friends for a drink next time.
Had such a great girls' dinner at Um.Ma in SF! I love that everything is served family-style, making it easy to try a little bit of everything. The house-made banchan were so fresh, especially the soy-marinated quail eggs--I'd come back just for those. The galbi was tender and flavorful, and the bone marrow corn cheese was easily the star of the meal. We also enjoyed the Rock N Roe and soju cocktails, while the spicy raw marinated crab was a bit sweeter than my preference but still fresh and tasty. Definitely a great spot for authentic Korean food and group dinners in San Francisco! Service was great & loved the atmosphere!
Wow. We had such a good experience here last night. The 8 of us (two of which were toddlers) celebrated our birthdays here and couldn't be happier with the flavor and variety of food. Our waitress was Mikaela and she was wonderful and very helpful. We ordered a variety of dishes to share - Kalbi, japchae, cheese corn with bone marrow, marinated raw crab, 10 pieces of chicken wings, seafood pancake and rockin roe. We also had ban Chan consisting of broccoli, quail egg, pickled daikon and Kimchee. The quail egg and Brocolli was yummy! My favorite of all dishes was the marinated raw crab. It was in a sauce that I just loved, not too spicy and the crab was so tender. It was my first time eating crab raw and it was tender, flavorful and delicious. I wish they gave us crab crackers instead of scissors. The crab shell was hard and difficult to cut so I had to use my teeth to crack it. We asked for the seafood pancake to be crispy and they delivered. Everyone loved it although I thought it was a little too doughy for me and not enough seafood. The 1/2 honey and 1/2 soy chicken wings were just that. Very savory and crispy. The cheese corn with bone marrow mixed in was very different and we enjoyed that dish a lot. The toddlers loved the purple rice. We formed little balls of purple rice for them and they wouldn't eat their dinner because all they wanted was purple rice. There is nothing to write home about the japchae. The rock and roe looked amazing before we mixed it with the purple rice. I could just nibble on the topping. I think there was too much purple rice underneath so I couldn't enjoy all the roe when it was mixed together. The Kalbi priced at $40 for about 7 pieces was overpriced. It was tasty but that was too much money for so few pieces. Mikaela also offered us complimentary Soju for our birthdays. Our lychee soju carafe was sweet with a lot of ice. I think next time we will opt for a small bottle of peach soju. I also had a $10 coupon but forgot to use it. All in all, it was a great experience eating the raw crab, rockin roe and the cheese corn with bone marrow. I think I have to return to use my coupon!
Walked in and got seat right away on Sunday afternoon. Sat out in the back patio. Ordered the 10 wings, 3 flavors, citrus gochujang, honey butter, soy sesame. The honey butter wings needed more flavor. My favorite were the citrus gochujang. Need to come back with more people to try more of their dishes.
Highly recommend to make a reservation and try this place. It's really worth the visit. Service was really quick and efficient while restaurant was pretty busy on Saturday around 7pm. I loved all the side dishes they brought, especially kimchi. We ordered for 2 people: 1. Kimchi fried rice 2. Bulgogi 3. Bone marrow corn It was a bit of too much food either the side dishes. We both didn't even touch our rice that was brought as a side. Bone marrow corn dish was my favorite. It's sweet, it's cheesy and has a bone marrow. Bulgogi was great too! We sat on the patio and they have warmers there so at 60F it wasn't cold at all.
We had such a delicious dinner the other night at Um Ma. This restaurant is surprisingly large. There is indoor private tables and communal tables as well as outdoor seating extending to the back. Staff were friendly, accommodating, and always checking in. Portions were large and the taste did not disappoint. Definitely a solid Korean restaurant to add to the books. If you ever find yourself in the Inner Sunset or craving Korean food after walking around Golden Gate Park, come to Um Ma because it will not disappoint.
This place is more toward Korean fusion rather than authentic korean restaurant. The portion is generous and we loved their chicken wings. The service could be a little bit better overall.
such a charming spot in the sunset! they have a spacious backyard patio with heating and shade so it wouldn't be too hot or cold. the banchan includes quail eggs which is such a nice touch :") we also got the: - soondubu jiggae ($20) - ginger soy chicken ($15 for 6 pc) - seafood pancake ($24) the pancake was a huge portion but some parts were pretty doughy, I hope it wasn't uncooked. the soup was comforting and paired well with the purple rice. the chicken was just ok but I liked the little rice balls
I love a comforting Korean food spot with nice outdoor seating (and there's heaters when cold). shared the kimchi-jjigae and pork belly and that was along with the banchan (quail eggs!! yum) and purple rice was the perfect amount for 2 people who already had dessert beforehand, haha. want to try to their Kbbq next time (and everything else on menu cause all looks good!!)

Second time customer first time caller. Lol If you are looking for a different spin on Korean food, look no further... Everything we ordered here was a banger. Not quite traditional, but still gives off that Korean cuisine vibe. Despite their full restsurant, service seemed very spot on. Except that one time we waited for our extra broth... But by then we were almost already full so it didn't matter. The worst thing about this place is the parking. Park at your own risk. Lol, it's just such a dense busy area it might take you forever. But obviously it's not their fault. Enjoy!!! read more

A great meal! We had the 10 piece wings, kimchi fried rice and seafood pancake. All of it was delicious. Would come back again for those items and would like to try a few new others, too. Service was a bit on the slower side, but it was fine as we didn't have anywhere else to be right after. The back patio is the place to be if the weather is cooperating. I'd like to come back. read more
Pros: big outdoor patio space, good for large groups, big portions for sharing, lots of drink options Cons: bit loud to talk, service can be a bit slow because it gets busy, food tasted a little bland to me, can get a bit pricey read more
Elevated Korean food! My friends and I shared 5 dishes and a dessert and we liked everything. Standouts for me were the kimchi scallion pancake and the sullungtang. The pancake was so crispy in every bite was absolutely stuffed with savory, acidic, crunchy bits of kimchi. The sullungtang was perfectly salted and the meat was extremely tender! Such a comforting bowl of soup. The galbi here is also really tasty but I feel like you can get this almost anywhere; also definitely pricy. The ginger sesame soy chicken wings were coated in a sweeter glaze. The wings themselves were super big; wish it was hotter and more crispy. The braised potatoes were a very unique flavor combination, perfect if you love spicy and cheesy. We originally wanted the Japanese cheesecake but they ran out, so we got the ube cheesecake instead which was yummy and paired so well with the blueberries! Mocktails were refreshing. Attentive service that was pretty efficient. Absolutely loved the atmosphere here! Such a cozy spot both indoors and out. read more

This is perfect for a cute dinner with the girls or a date night. There is the outside patio with such amazing ambiance. The food itself is standard Korean food with standard pricing. read more
We did a walk in on an early ish Sat and were promply seated in their back patio next to a heater (it was cold!). We tried two soju cocktails. They were way too sweet for us but still refreshing and fun to try something new. Since it was our first time trying Korean we had questions for our server and she helped us narrow down our choices. We wanted to try the Tteok-bokki since we had never had that before and one of their standard bibimbap dishes. We opted for beef but you can choose chicken. The Tteok-bokki arrived first. The server recommended we add cheese to it, so we did. This was very indulgent, spicy, piping hot and very comforting. It does start to get a bit redundant and hoped for more textures. The pickled items helped and we loved the quail eggs. The bibimbap with beef was delicious. We enjoyed it but only wish it came with more beef for the serving. The ratio seemed off. The outside started filling up quickly throughout our dinner, it seems like a popular and fun spot for bigger groups. We took home lots of leftovers as the portions were huge! read more
Nice menu and good. Execution of Korean fried chicken wings , and charred gai lan vegetables. Also nice heat on the tteok-bokki. Definitely order with cheese!! Service was very pleasant Wings were tasty. JYW recommends! read more
Um Ma is on the more expensive side compared to Manna, which is nearby, but I think it's worth a visit! (Yeah lol I am a cheap eats person.) The outdoor area is really well taken care of and there are heaters outside. Love the vibe! I thought the Bulgogi was OK. The meat was honestly a little too tender/finely sliced such that there wasn't the meaty chewiness to it but otherwise OK. I thought the pork belly was really good, especially with the gochujang sauce. The service is excellent; I've been here twice and the servers have always been so kind and patient and genuinely like they want to check in on you! read more
Food is always great here. We were a party of 4 on a Saturday night and got seated right away. It's really cold in there and we were seated by the front door. Wish they would shut the front door. What we ordered: veggie bibimbap w/ fried tofu - so good w/ the purple rice and veggies. The fried tofu was exellent. Bulgogi beef w/ purple rice and quail eggs - my sister and niece loved it. Jap Chae - delicious and full of flavors Scallion Pancakes - so good and crispy, thicker than what I've had at other Korean restaurants. Service was great and the server was attentive. Will always come back here for quality Korean food. read more
First time trying Um Ma. I went on a Saturday night. I waited about 40 minutes on the waitlist. There is seating inside and in the back. I got two dishes - they are sized decently. I rlly enjoyed the quail eggs that they provide. The restroom is clean. Parking is available nearby but competitive. The staff is very friendly! Fun and cozy atmosphere. Will be back! read more

It feels good to be back and sharing my food experiences again. Big appreciation to everyone who has supported me along the way. This time I visited Umma for some Korean dishes, and overall it was a solid experience. The soon tofu had a flavor that was a little different from what I usually expect, but I enjoyed trying something new. It was comforting and nicely prepared. The highlight for me was definitely the Korean wings. I chose the citrus gochujang flavor and they were crispy, bold, and full of personality. We also ordered the toktokkie. It was decent, and I really liked the ramen added on top which gave the dish a nice touch. The vibe was welcoming and the food was flavorful, making it a place I would consider visiting again. read more
Definitely not your typical authentic Korean food but it was still decent. We tried the Corn Cheese ($12), Bibimbap ($22), Japchae ($17) + bulgogi ($6), and the Tteokbokki ($16). The corn cheese was good but it tasted more like elote. Imo the bibimbap and japchae were bland and adding the bulgogi is what saved them but the price felt a little steep. The outdoor seating was nice with heated lamps and service was quick and friendly. Overall, not a bad spot to try with friends, but not my top pick for Korean food. read more

Having been here dozens of times over the years, Um Ma is an acceptable spot for patio Korean food with good vibes, especially on a warm day. Whether you are in Golden Gate Park or strolling through the sunset, it's conveniently located. Again, the vibes are good and the patio is a plus as it makes it dog friendly. Doesn't really feel like an authentic Korean place and it's a bit like they are trying too hard to be hip but maybe that's what sells. I recommend making reservations as it can get busy during prime time. The service is ... usually sub par. Even on our best visit, it was still lacking. I want to be charitable and assume they are just severely understaffed. You'll often have a hard time getting a hold of them and even if you do, expect to remind them multiple times for requests. They've made it so you can now order on your phone but for any special requests, it's the same issue. The food is pricey but a few of the dishes are actually worth it. Haven't visited in a while but apparently now they charge for extra banchan (side dishes)... what? I know times are tough but damn. While the patio atmosphere is nice and the location is convenient for many, there are better Korean spots even in SF (and much, much better in the Bay in general). Overall, the place is good but not great and while the atmosphere is lovely, things like the insufficient level of service and the inconsistent quality of the dishes makes it hard to make this a must visit for anyone. read more
Came here in a group of 4 adults for a Sunday lunch. Street parking is limited so we had to park in the park and walk for about 10 mins. We were seated in the back with heaters. We ordered la style kalbi, marinated raw crab, rocking roe, fried chicken, and bone marrow. I loved the marinated raw crab and rocking roe. Both came in good portions and were quite flavorful. Fried chicken (honey butter) was also quite good, would try a different flavor next time. Kalbi was good, but way overpriced. A few thin slices for $40. Bone marrow was good - but it's kinda gimmicky. Theres little bone marrow really, so u r just eating the cheese and corn, which are good, but not something I will order at a Korean restaurant. Overall I will give this place a four star. All items taste good, but not all are worth ordering. read more
My friend made a reservation for 6 people on a Saturday night with no problems. We got there and were seated in a back patio which was a bit enclosed and had heat lamps. Kimchi fried rice (3/5): The kimchi fried rice is cooked with purple rice instead of white rice which wasn't my favorite. The flavor was okay. Not too much kimchi taste, felt like the rice might've overpowered everything. It was topped with a poached egg. Seafood pancake (5/5): This was my favorite dish of the night. The server asked if we wanted it crispy which was confusing because I thought they'd all come like that but that is what we chose. It was so crisp on the outside and pillowy on the inside. Good amount of seafood. I love the way they cut it into tiny pieces. It was great for sharing. It came with a seasoned soy sauce for dipping. LA style kalbi (4/5): It came out on a hot skillet dish on top of a bed of onions. It tasted like your usual kalbi. It was a little too fatty in some pieces but still yummy. Pork belly (4/5): Flavor was good, it was marinated with a citrus gochujang glaze. The portion was a bit small. It came with a housemead gochugaru paste. Tteokbokki (3/5): Not the best spicy rice cake I've had but the fish cakes were shaped like fish and that was the best part. Flavor was okay, not too spicy at all. Lychee lemonade (2/5): They had two separate drink menus and I wanted to try something. I don't know what is up with this but there was barely any ice so the drink was a bit warm once it melted? The lychee flavor was weak as well. Dalgona gelato (1/5): We had to end this dinner with a sweet treat but we were painfully disappointed. When it was served, it was already melted? It was not the consistency of any gelato I've ever had. It was like a melt soft serve. Basically ice cream soup. We ordered a different gelato too and it also came melted. I would not recommend but also don't know if it was just something up with their ice? Overall, I enjoyed the good. It is a nice dinner spot for either a small or big group. It was my friends birthday and we even got a free bottle of soju. They topped it with a candle which was cute. The food was good but I don't know about the drinks and dessert. It would be a 4 star but the drink and dessert really brought the score down. read more

Had the best time here the service was great, friendly, and hospitable. I didn't catch the name of our server but she was a young Asian, maybe Filipino lady with glasses. I celebrated a birthday with a large party. Thank you for the quality food and service. I can't wait to come back! My favorite dish was the kimchi prawns. But everything else was outstanding as well. read more

I only see the dinner menu on the website. Is there a different lunch menu?
Does the outdoor patio provide shelter from rain? Tried calling but no answer.
yup, their backyard/outdoor patio has a roof over it and can protect y'all from the rain to a certain extent. if you want a clearer idea of what i mean by that, go to the photos and toggle to the outside tab and you'll see.…
The website lists seating for only large parties-6 or more. Is there any seating options for 2 guests?
