Wow. We had such a good experience here last night. The 8 of us (two of which were toddlers) celebrated our birthdays here and couldn't be happier with the flavor and variety of food. Our waitress was Mikaela and she was wonderful and very helpful. We ordered a variety of dishes to share - Kalbi, japchae, cheese corn with bone marrow, marinated raw crab, 10 pieces of chicken wings, seafood pancake and rockin roe. We also had ban Chan consisting of broccoli, quail egg, pickled daikon and Kimchee. The quail egg and Brocolli was yummy! My favorite of all dishes was the marinated raw crab. It was in a sauce that I just loved, not too spicy and the crab was so tender. It was my first time eating crab raw and it was tender, flavorful and delicious. I wish they gave us crab crackers instead of scissors. The crab shell was hard and difficult to cut so I had to use my teeth to crack it. We asked for the seafood pancake to be crispy and they delivered. Everyone loved it although I thought it was a little too doughy for me and not enough seafood. The 1/2 honey and 1/2 soy chicken wings were just that. Very savory and crispy. The cheese corn with bone marrow mixed in was very different and we enjoyed that dish a lot. The toddlers loved the purple rice. We formed little balls of purple rice for them and they wouldn't eat their dinner because all they wanted was purple rice. There is nothing to write home about the japchae. The rock and roe looked amazing before we mixed it with the purple rice. I could just nibble on the topping. I think there was too much purple rice underneath so I couldn't enjoy all the roe when it was mixed together. The Kalbi priced at $40 for about 7 pieces was overpriced. It was tasty but that was too much money for so few pieces. Mikaela also offered us complimentary Soju for our birthdays. Our lychee soju carafe was sweet with a lot of ice. I think next time we will opt for a small bottle of peach soju. I also had a $10 coupon but forgot to use it. All in all, it was a great experience eating the raw crab, rockin roe and the cheese corn with bone marrow. I think I have to return to use my coupon! read more

Elevated Korean food! My friends and I shared 5 dishes and a dessert and we liked everything. Standouts for me were the kimchi scallion pancake and the sullungtang. The pancake was so crispy in every bite was absolutely stuffed with savory, acidic, crunchy bits of kimchi. The sullungtang was perfectly salted and the meat was extremely tender! Such a comforting bowl of soup. The galbi here is also really tasty but I feel like you can get this almost anywhere; also definitely pricy. The ginger sesame soy chicken wings were coated in a sweeter glaze. The wings themselves were super big; wish it was hotter and more crispy. The braised potatoes were a very unique flavor combination, perfect if you love spicy and cheesy. We originally wanted the Japanese cheesecake but they ran out, so we got the ube cheesecake instead which was yummy and paired so well with the blueberries! Mocktails were refreshing. We did a walk in on an early ish Sat and were promply seated in their back patio next to a heater (it was cold!). We tried two soju cocktails. They were way too sweet for us but still refreshing and fun to try something new. Since it was our first time trying Korean we had questions for our server and she helped us narrow down our choices. We wanted to try the Tteok-bokki since we had never had that before and one of their standard bibimbap dishes. We opted for beef but you can choose chicken. The Tteok-bokki arrived first. The server recommended we add cheese to it, so we did. This was very indulgent, spicy, piping hot and very comforting. It does start to get a bit redundant and hoped for more textures. The pickled items helped and we loved the quail eggs. The bibimbap with beef was delicious. We enjoyed it but only wish it came with more beef for the serving. The ratio seemed off. This time I visited Umma for some Korean dishes, and overall it was a solid experience. The soon tofu had a flavor that was a little different from what I usually expect, but I enjoyed trying something new. It was comforting and nicely prepared. Having been here dozens of times over the years, Um Ma is an acceptable spot for patio Korean food with good vibes, especially on a warm day. Whether you are in Golden Gate Park or strolling through the sunset, it's conveniently located. Again, the vibes are good and the patio is a plus as it makes it dog friendly. Doesn't really feel like an authentic Korean place and it's a bit like they are trying too hard to be hip but maybe that's what sells. I recommend making reservations as it can get busy during prime time. The service is ... usually sub par. Even on our best visit, it was still lacking. I want to be charitable and assume they are just severely understaffed. You'll often have a hard time getting a hold of them and even if you do, expect to remind them multiple times for requests. They've made it so you can now order on your phone but for any special requests, it's the same issue. The food is pricey but a few of the dishes are actually worth it. Haven't visited in a while but apparently now they charge for extra banchan (side dishes)... what? I know times are tough but damn. While the patio atmosphere is nice and the location is convenient for many, there are better Korean spots even in SF (and much, much better in the Bay in general). Overall, the place is good but not great and while the atmosphere is lovely, things like the insufficient level of service and the inconsistent quality of the dishes makes it hard to make this a must visit for anyone. read more

2nd time here for a birthday dinner for 13PP. Reservations made in advance and even though we ran late, they were gracious to hold our table. Seated right away, servers were nice and efficient. Only issue was we had to grab extra chairs in order for us to fit comfortably. All the food was amazing but favs were the scallion pancakes and tofu soup. The portions were a bit small for a large group so we ordered 2 dishes of each. Seated by the door so we were a bit cold and had to wear our jackets. But we had the whole back room so felt private. We ordered la style kalbi, marinated raw crab, rocking roe, fried chicken, and bone marrow. I loved the marinated raw crab and rocking roe. Both came in good portions and were quite flavorful. Fried chicken (honey butter) was also quite good, would try a different flavor next time. Kalbi was good, but way overpriced. A few thin slices for $40. Bone marrow was good - but it's kinda gimmicky. Theres little bone marrow really, so u r just eating the cheese and corn, which are good, but not something I will order at a Korean restaurant. My friend made a reservation for 6 people on a Saturday night with no problems. We got there and were seated in a back patio which was a bit enclosed and had heat lamps. Kimchi fried rice (3/5): The kimchi fried rice is cooked with purple rice instead of white rice which wasn't my favorite. The flavor was okay. Not too much kimchi taste, felt like the rice might've overpowered everything. It was topped with a poached egg. Seafood pancake (5/5): This was my favorite dish of the night. The server asked if we wanted it crispy which was confusing because I thought they'd all come like that but that is what we chose. It was so crisp on the outside and pillowy on the inside. Good amount of seafood. I love the way they cut it into tiny pieces. It was great for sharing. It came with a seasoned soy sauce for dipping. LA style kalbi (4/5): It came out on a hot skillet dish on top of a bed of onions. It tasted like your usual kalbi. It was a little too fatty in some pieces but still yummy. Pork belly (4/5): Flavor was good, it was marinated with a citrus gochujang glaze. The portion was a bit small. It came with a housemead gochugaru paste. Tteokbokki (3/5): Not the best spicy rice cake I've had but the fish cakes were shaped like fish and that was the best part. Flavor was okay, not too spicy at all. Lychee lemonade (2/5): They had two separate drink menus and I wanted to try something. I don't know what is up with this but there was barely any ice so the drink was a bit warm once it melted? The lychee flavor was weak as well. Dalgona gelato (1/5): We had to end this dinner with a sweet treat but we were painfully disappointed. When it was served, it was already melted? It was not the consistency of any gelato I've ever had. It was like a melt soft serve. Basically ice cream soup. We ordered a different gelato too and it also came melted. I would not recommend but also don't know if it was just something up with their ice? Overall, I enjoyed the good. It is a nice dinner spot for either a small or big group. The staff at Um Ma are genuinely kind and welcoming, especially when we had to send back the seafood pancake, which arrived as a deep-fried grease abomination that no amount of dipping sauce could save. Service was fine, but food was okay. We ordered 10 wings, half honey butter and the other soy garlic. The chicken was okay, not as crunchy as you would expect for a Korean restaurant. The scallion pancake was not what you would expect it to be. It felt like eating just flour, no taste by itself, that's why there's a sauce to dip it into. I've had many Korean pancakes in my life and I never experienced it cooked this way. The kimchi fried rice was also disappointing. It was like eating red rice fried on an oil. You couldn't taste any spice or even the kimchi. The best part of the meal was the vegan tofu soup with mushroom, Vegan soondubu-jjigae. So of course it was a special occasion! We came here to meet our longtime friend, whom we haven't seen in years! I found this place on Yelp while searching for "Unique Restaurants." Saw that it was in the Inner Sunset where I used to live and not too far from our friend. On arrival, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was a former Michelin spot, particularly in 2021. That felt like a score, because I had looked for other Michelin restaurants to eat at, but most were closed Mondays , so glad I found this one. I've heard that losing the star/rating doesn't mean a drop in quality, but more likely that the restaurant stopped paying the Michelin folks. Based on our experience here, I'm convinced that's the case. Of note, like most restaurants in the Inner Sunset, parking is horrible. Fortunately, it's very close to the entrance of Golden Gate Park, so we parked in that area, and simply walked what felt like less than a block down to the restaurant, We were seated out on the patio, which my wife immediately called "so cutesy." She loved the vibe, and I have to admit, it was pretty charming. Now onto the food: absolutely incredible! Every single dish was packed with bold, satisfying Korean flavor. Here's what we got: - Korean fried chicken: crispy, sweet, and came with a little Korean flag, which was a nice touch! - Kimchi fried rice: the Mrs. Favorite - Kalbi: Must have this at almost any Korean restaurant - Pork belly: Fatty and delicious - Charred Gai Lan: TBH, I've never been a fan of Gai lan, but this one really appealed to me it the sear and style that I've never had before - Seafood pancake: HUGE and scrumptious - Sundubu: warm and cozy for the weather Everything was done right. Came here on a friend's recommendation since they said it was good but we were deeply disappointment. This is by no way your authentic Korean food more like an Americanized version. While we were looking over the menu, we had to flag down a waitress and asked if their dishes came with rice and was looked at like we were dumb. Their menu does not specify if their dishes come with rice and we were asking to make sure since there was three of us and we wanted to share. We decided to try their dak galbi - a citrus gochujang chicken slices ($25.00). The chicken wasn't even sliced but chopped up instead. We didn't like the citrus gochujang for the pairing but to each their own. Tteok-bokki ($16.00) with all the add ones - cheese ($4.00), ramen ($4.00), and an egg ($3.00) (total $27.00). What should have been a good Rabokki was nothing but disappointment. The spice was okay but more on the low-mild side. The typically tteok-bokki would have been with a soft or hard boiled egg but here, it was a poached egg.... the ramen wasn't the typical Korean ramen. If anything it was like similiar to angel hair pasta... The gochujang sauce would have been okay but it was sweet.. almost like a tomato base taste... Soondubu-jigae ($20.00) had only one spice level and we added extra gochujang to it to make it a little spicier. This dish was pretty good, but a bit overpriced. Banchan was underwhelming for three people, we were only giving one three-divider of bean sprouts, a few slices of pickled radish and cucumbers, and four quail eggs. No kimchi or any other banchan. Service: it wsa so hard to get their attention as majority of us and others there were in the back patio. There was no service or call button. Then we paid and asked for a copy of our receipt. They never came back until we got up to leave did the waitress suddenly remember to print out a copy for us. First time trying this place for over priced "Korean" food... definitely will not be coming back. Portion wise wasn't very satisfying so I think you're better off finding another spot if looking for better value like Daeho. However I did appreciate that most of the meat was already de-boned. 2) LA style Kalbi was good, meat wasn't too burnt, but a bit pricy for $40. Parking in the area is horrible -- can take a few turns and loops until street parking is available. Alternatively you can park in Golden Gate Park and walk across the street. The food was a visual experience , the banchans were unique and delicious. The Kimchi was really ripe and tasty. The marinated quail eggs were served cold and they were delicately seasoned. The Rocking Roe was a masterpiece. I ordered bulgogi to use as topping and it was fantastic. The purple rice blended with the taste of the Roes. The dink I had was so refreshing and the popping boba made it really good. The chicken needed to be a little crispier. I am so used to the SanTung Chicken . All in all the food was great. On a calm Tuesday in the city, I had decided on trying out this restaurant on Irving for some nice Korean food. Flavorwise, everything was a little underwhelming. The bone marrow corn cheese was extremely sweet, and was a little weird tasting. The La Galbi was decent, and the beef bone soup's noodles were overcooked. Perhaps we ordered the wrong items, but these items should be good at any Korean restaurant. I would give it another try as the other tables seemed to really enjoy their food, but it definitely wouldn't be my first choice for korean food in SF. read more

I came here excited to try the raw marinated crab and the kalbi. I ordered both but they told me that they were out of the crab so I just stuck with the Galbi. The side dishes they served were amazing and the quail eggs stole the show, and also the kimchi and the sliced pickled cucumber were good. While I was dining, a couple walked in and asked for a seat and the waitress asked if they had a reservation and they said no and were turned away. I'm not sure why that happened because I'd come here about 15 minutes before them when the restaurant opened at 5, asked for a table without a reservation and got it, the entire restaurant is pretty much empty. It's only me and one other person at a table. I watched this pattern for a little while, two other parties came in, one had a reservation and one didn't and both were let in. To me it seems like they are only letting in Asian people without a reservation? Lol. Also about the service it seems like the waitresses didn't want to be there, I had a hard time flagging them down to ask for more banchan. Back to the food, I could tell that the meat they used for the kalbi was not very good quality. The meat was thin, and they were a lot of very hard to chew parts that were chewy and tough. For the price they charge for the kalbi and the quality/location of the restaurant, I expected better quality meat. The kalbi flavor itself was OK. Nothing spectacular, but it wasn't bad. I would not come back here to order the kalbi. Actually I would've been perfectly happy eating ban chan with some rice. They were the best things I've tasted during the dinner. When I told the waitress that the quail eggs are really good they asked if I wanted something to go, I was happy about that. My conclusion: An extremely overrated restaurant that serves mediocre Korean food, not great service either. read more

I ordered a bibimbap with beef and there was hardly any meat. It was mostly mushroom. I wish I knew from the start so I could ask for another bowl but I couldn't tell from the appearance because the contents in the bowl were of similar color. Definitely not worth $28. read more
