Zazie used to be one of my favorite restaurants. I even celebrated my birthday here earlier this year, so it's really tough to write this review, but I had a pretty bad experience last night. I called a couple of hours beforehand and made a same day reservation for three at 8 p.m. I was amazed they could get us in. The guy who answered the phone was so nice. We arrived right at 8 and were seated on the back patio. Our server took a little while to greet us, but by about 8:15 she showed up and we immediately ordered our salad and entrees. The heirloom tomato salad came out around 8:30 and was great in concept, though a few more pieces of cheese would have made a big difference. Our entrees, two salmon dishes and a medium-rare steak, came out around 9 p.m. We had waited a little too long, especially since the restaurant was not very full at that point. My steak was overdone, so as politely as possible, I sent it back. The server said it wouldn't take long, so I assumed 15 minutes at most. By 9:20, the steak still had not arrived and my family had finished eating. The server came by and said it would be out in another couple of minutes. Another 10 minutes passed, and there was still no steak and no sign of the server. At 9:30, I was so frustrated that I got up to cancel it. I found the server standing near the kitchen talking with other servers, while my steak was just sitting there in the service window. I'm sorry, but I did not come to a restaurant at 8 p.m. to eat my entree at 9:30 or later, after everyone else had already finished. What made it worse was that the server was not apologetic at all. We also ran out of water multiple times throughout the evening. Overall, it felt like the staff, other than the host, just didn't care. Neither the kitchen nor the server. I don't know if it's the no-tip model, but it definitely felt like an authentic European zero-customer-service type of experience. I'm really disappointed, Zazie. I know you can do better. read more

Had the escargot, salade toscanes, and cup of the soupe du jour which was a Moroccan lentil soup. Stopped by Zazie its a neighborhood café with a relaxed atmosphere that reminded me of some of the places I visited in Europe. Service was friendly, and the wine recommendation was spot on. We went with the mussels and pork chop based on our server's suggestion. The mussels were great, and right when I was thinking some bread would be nice to soak up the broth, our server asked if we'd like some. The pork chop was cooked perfectly, and the pear sauce paired with it really well. The potato gratin was the only thing that fell a little flat for me, it could have used a bit more seasoning. I also like their no tipping model. The prices are a little higher, but I'm all for paying a bit extra if it means the staff is earning a living wage. Whenever I'm in Cole Valley I always see a big crowd outside Zazie, so my partner and I finally decided to try it and see what the hype was about. The employees all seemed genuinely happy and were very friendly when greeting diners. The space is a bit tight, with lots of tables inside and out. They also have a heated back patio, which makes outdoor seating comfortable even on cold, gloomy SF mornings. I ordered the Mexico scramble which has chorizo, white cheddar, roasted peppers, and salsa fresca. It also comes with a side toast and home fries. The dish was tasty and they were generous with the chorizo. I especially liked the pico de gallo on top, though I wished it had a bit more spice. The potatoes were nicely crispy and the toast was... well, standard toast. My partner ordered the seasonal huevos rancheros which had eggs, beans, tortillas, avocado, queso fresco, and pico de gallo. He really enjoyed the flavors and thought it was a solid dish. We also shared a side of pancakes, and those were definitely the highlight. They were warm, fluffy, and perfect with the maple syrup. If you go, I'd strongly recommend ordering pancakes. Overall, the food was good but didn't quite live up to the long wait and hype for us. MIRACLE PANCAKES (5/5) If I ever come back, would definitely order these again. They're thicker than their normal pancakes (maybe 2-3x thicker), much more moist, and topped with a big dollop of whipped cream and soft, caramelized banana slices. Plus some syrup, and this is a wonderful sweet bite for brunch. 2. BUTTERMILK PANCAKES (4/5) Had a strong buttermilk flavor, which I appreciated. These are thin pancakes about the size of a large dinner plate (so substantial). However, I thought they were a bit dry and really needed syrup to taste good. I'd definitely pay up to get something like the Miracle pancakes instead, or maybe one of their french toasts. 3. It would've been fine, but I felt that some of the waitstaff got a bit impatient or frustrated having us walk through that area. Maybe it was just me, but it would've helped if they were a bit more friendly and didn't act as if I was in the way. Once we were seated, the waitperson came immediately to take our drink orders. She gave us time after bringing our drinks to peruse the menu and decide. I had the single eggs florentine with the house potatoes ($19) and a cup of coffee ($6). One friend had the eggs only that came with toast and potatoes ($15) and the other had a poached egg with chicken apple sausage and toast ($19). We were all pretty happy with our food. After we were served, it was a bit difficult getting the waitperson's attention for a coffee refill, but, I have to say, she was pretty busy with other diners, so it wasn't a deal breaker. It's been a long while since I visited the Haight district. This neighborhood reminds me of the East Village in New York. I ordered the St. Trop, and it was delicious. Honestly just flat out rude. Avoid the waitress with the green hair. I can deal with outrageous prices if the food AND service justifies the cost. It doesn't anymore thanks to her. read more
