Zazie is a local, beloved institution. I grew up around the corner on Ashbury. I've been a customer here since they opened, in the late 80's? or early 90's? The food is excellent, the "Un, Deux, Trois" (egg, pancake/French toast and bacon or sausage) is my go-to breakfast, along with a big bowl with a latte or "un chocolat". Lunch and dinner menus change seasonally, but the salads/ veggies are always super fresh, and along with pastas, they always have tempting meat, poultry and fish dishes. Their desserts are consistently fantastic. I lived in Paris after college, and Zazie (based on the film, Zazie Dans Le Metro) is absolutely, authentically French. The French mom I worked for is the only person I know who did this dish better. So, whenever I find it on the menu, I order their Rabbit Stew. It's simply divine. I keep returning for the food, but honestly, the service and atmosphere are equally top-notch. The best kept "secret" is they have Monday evenings reserved for dogs on the back patio. There's usually a special on wine, and they have doggie treats! You have to experience it to believe it. Honestly, you could easily be in a quaint French village bistro, surrounded by all the townspeople, and their canine companions, big and small. It's the best. Zazie is literally one of my all-time favorite places in the world for breakfast/brunch, equally fabulous for a French date night, or special place to treat "out of towners". But my all-time favorite is the Monday Dog Nights!! My husband and I took my Italian Greyhound here many, many times. Jack McCoy gives it "2 Dew Claws Up". A classic. read more

Out for a long awaited dinner w spouse on FRODAY. The main thing that deserves the one STAR is the FOOD. I'm not even considering the 1 hr 45 min wait for the food as ALMOST THE ENTIRE patio of guests were in the same situation. 1. Pate Maison - a THICK, almost frozen, slab of tasteless pate came out on a cold, previously grilled, thin cut of what may have once been good bread. Pate was UNspreadable and fell off the bread in crumbles and chucks, revealing overly buttery cold and smushed bread structure underneath. It was AWEFUL such that I spit out my bite into a napkin. I declined a replacement with anything off the menu after the server inquired about me not eating it. 2. Dinner roll w a round of butter. It was a plain, white roll that is likely $1 at a local Safeway. And it was cold. I did not eat it. 3. Mushroom Ravioli - came about an hour after the pate. Ravioli were ok but only AFTER one scrapes the mud-colored EXTREMELY salty sauce they came buried in. There were literally 6 arugula on top that could not kill the salt in my mouth after one bite. AWFUL! 4. Pork chop - huge with 2 bones in. Looked ok but cause of the thickness, the more outer layers were OVERcooked and only the inner was ok. Plus, there was a mildl flavor of previously used fat/oil for the searing process. UNAPPETIZING! The gratin potatoes were ok but one does not pay almost $50 for a square of potatoes. We took the above home without complaints mainly bc we felt bad for the waitress, who already had patron next to us tell her they were starving and wanted to leave. I ate a $2 yogurt at home after putting the left overs in compost - and bemoaning a waste of $130 hard earned dollars. I give Food - a FAIL. SERVICE - our waitress was an attractive tall gal, put together and nice enough. However, she was minimally attentive, perhaps because the restaurant was way overbooked for what they could reasonably handle. So I would give service a C grade. AMBIANCE - warm lit and bustling, crowded, mostly clean. Wall posters (French) looked bleached by the sun and age. Floor to the patio was slick w grease and water, so a fall risk for some. I give ambiance a B grade. Sadly, my conclusion is AVOID unless they improve. We will NOT be returning to find out if they do. read more

A quick chat search led me to Zazie. I really liked it & look forward to returning. The host was very kind to me & others, seating us as quickly as possible. Favorite items I ordered: - Buttermilk Pancakes - Mexico Scramble Pros: - lots if seating options : Out Front , Inside, Out Back on the Patio , I sat out back it was very beautiful and peaceful - food is great - service is great , kind & helpful Cons: - kinda pricey (spent $100 for 2 people) , but thru they don't expect or want tips , they're prices are higher in exchange for tips - parking is tough , parked a few blocks away read more

Came here for a Sunday dinner and got seated immediately for a party of 2 in the backyard patio which was super cute (and allows dogs!) Stopped by Zazie its a neighborhood café with a relaxed atmosphere that reminded me of some of the places I visited in Europe. Service was friendly, and the wine recommendation was spot on. We went with the mussels and pork chop based on our server's suggestion. The mussels were great, and right when I was thinking some bread would be nice to soak up the broth, our server asked if we'd like some. The pork chop was cooked perfectly, and the pear sauce paired with it really well. The potato gratin was the only thing that fell a little flat for me, it could have used a bit more seasoning. I also like their no tipping model. The prices are a little higher, but I'm all for paying a bit extra if it means the staff is earning a living wage. I've heard brunch is fantastic so I'll definitely be back to give that a try. Overall, a great experience and a spot I'd happily return to. read more

Mother's day brunch (be prepared for a wait to be seated!) Eggs Benedict (2) - Albert and Divorce' - I had the Albert and wife and sister had divorce. The hollandaise was perfect and the bacon was thick cooked to perfection (wish I ordered side as well) Scramble - (Dad) - Fontainbleau - Mushrooms were excellent and the amount of spinach and cheese was perfect to balance OG French Toast - (Mom and kids)Toasty on the outside chewy and soft on the inside, butter was fresh and perfect to taste , excellent syrup as well. Smoked Salmon Sandwich -(Teenager) It was larger than she expected somehow, she normally finishes everything, she also had a lot of capers which she doesn't like too much of, so that I am sure threw her off. On the flip side if you like a good portion of salmon and capers you won't have any issues here Side of Chicken Apple Sausage- I wish it was smokier and less sweet Bloody Mary - The best bloody mary I've had on a brunch that I can remember, I would drink one rn, lol Mango Juice and Orange Juice - Odwalla - so yum! This was a great spot for dinner! My friend and I had made a reservation on a weekday night. We started with their pate maison, which was rich, slightly heavy on the pate, but smooth and full of flavor. The salad variety helped balance out the heavier pate. We also tried their pasta printemps, which was fresh and really satisfying. It was a contrast to the pate and more well-balanced. Good dining experience with dishes that were comforting. read more

Very cute and delicious restaurant. First time to a place in sf where menu price already included tax and tip. It's refreshing and I wis more places would do this. I had the petite salad and bourride zazie. At first I wasn't impressed with the salad. Just came out with a healthy serving of mixed greens but the dressing made it all better. I had it on the side and end up eating the whole bowl of salad. $9 The bourride or seafood stew was divine - very flavorful and monkfish was tender. $49 My friend had the salmon which she ate to the last bite. The warm bread and butter was a nice opening and it was free. The place was cozy and welcoming. Definitely will be back. Only odd thing was the credit card surge of 2.9%. For a restaurant that was trying to eliminate extra charges, weird to get a $2 extra charge for my $70 meal. Wish they would just build that in to complete the experience. Otherwise a very nice evening and yummy food read more

Zazie - Seafood stew - forgot menu name. Delicious - Breakfast & Brunch Near Me - San Francisco, California

There are lots o great places to go for breakfast in San Francisco, like Griddle Boy and the onion bialys from Arizmendi are so good, but Zazie has a special place in my heart. I love coming here for their steel cut oats with crème brûlée and cinnamon on top. This place is always crowded, but I do like how they allow dogs in their patio out back. I ordered some bacon a la carte and it was underwhelming and a bit overpriced for what you're getting because our bacon came up shriveled and dry which. Was a rare misstep. Zazie will always be required dining for u, but maybe next time I'll sneak in my own bacon. Oh, and another thing I love about them? They pay their waiters a living wage, so no pressure to tip because your waiter is already taken care of. read more

Whenever I'm in Cole Valley I always see a big crowd outside Zazie, so my partner and I finally decided to try it and see what the hype was about. Prices are on the higher side, but that's because they pay staff an hourly wage and the restaurant is tip-free, which I appreciated. The employees all seemed genuinely happy and were very friendly when greeting diners. The space is a bit tight, with lots of tables inside and out. They also have a heated back patio, which makes outdoor seating comfortable even on cold, gloomy SF mornings. I ordered the Mexico scramble which has chorizo, white cheddar, roasted peppers, and salsa fresca. It also comes with a side toast and home fries. The dish was tasty and they were generous with the chorizo. I especially liked the pico de gallo on top, though I wished it had a bit more spice. The potatoes were nicely crispy and the toast was... well, standard toast. My partner ordered the seasonal huevos rancheros which had eggs, beans, tortillas, avocado, queso fresco, and pico de gallo. He really enjoyed the flavors and thought it was a solid dish. We also shared a side of pancakes, and those were definitely the highlight. They were warm, fluffy, and perfect with the maple syrup. If you go, I'd strongly recommend ordering pancakes. Overall, the food was good but didn't quite live up to the long wait and hype for us. Service was friendly, but after our order was taken it was hard to get drink refills or additional help. Everyone was nice, just a bit forgetful. read more

It was okay overall, but nothing particularly special. Unfortunately, I found a hair in my food, but the staff handled it quickly and replaced the dish without any issues, which I appreciated. We came for brunch, and the food was decent. One thing to note: if you'd like to add an extra egg to your meal, it's surprisingly expensive--almost $10 for a single egg. I understand that gratuity is already included in the pricing, but $10 per egg still felt a bit excessive. The service was a little slow, but we weren't in a hurry, so it didn't really affect our experience. The restaurant itself was reasonably clean, although the bathroom could use a bit more attention. Overall, it was an acceptable experience, but not somewhere that particularly stood out to me. read more

I have been here countless times over the last 10 years. The most recent time, I was met by a new server I'd never seen before. While food was as delicious as ever, the server gave us wayyyyyy too much time between getting the menu and actually taking the order. This continued to dessert. Even though only 2 options were available, we were given around 20 minutes to decide, which was a really painful wait considering we were falling asleep and had early morning the next day. read more

TLDR: Zazie is a nice local brunch spot in Cole Valley, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. Food was good but nothing particularly special that you couldn't find elsewhere in the city. Service was a bit slow during an off-peak time, and the ambiance / environment was just fine. Prices were definitely high relative to what you're getting, but partially because they embed the tip in the menu prices. Still, we had a nice time and enjoyed our meal here. ------ FOOD: 1. MIRACLE PANCAKES (5/5) If I ever come back, would definitely order these again. They're thicker than their normal pancakes (maybe 2-3x thicker), much more moist, and topped with a big dollop of whipped cream and soft, caramelized banana slices. Plus some syrup, and this is a wonderful sweet bite for brunch. 2. BUTTERMILK PANCAKES (4/5) Had a strong buttermilk flavor, which I appreciated. These are thin pancakes about the size of a large dinner plate (so substantial). However, I thought they were a bit dry and really needed syrup to taste good. I'd definitely pay up to get something like the Miracle pancakes instead, or maybe one of their french toasts. 3. EGGS WITH CHICKEN APPLE SAUSAGE (3.5/5) I got two soft scramble eggs with 2 stout sausages, wheat toast, and their salad. Salad was basic -- just mixed greens and some dressing. Wheat toast was a single small piece of toast that was somewhat toasted and cut in half. Sausages were good but they're small. Eggs were cooked too long to be considered "soft scramble" so they were just fully scrambled eggs, which was fine with me but worth noting. They were completely unseasoned though, so I had to add a lot of salt and pepper to taste. In general, they have an extensive menu of eggs (in many formats), breakfast meats, sandwiches, salads, and pancakes, so most people can find something that generally suits them. ------ SERVICE: * Our waitress was nice enough but service in general was lackluster. There were 5 of us at the table but they only brought 4 water glasses. Then later a different waitress brought some pancakes and she gave us a bit of attitude when we surprisingly remarked (amongst ourselves!) that this wasn't quite what we ordered * Waiting to get our orders taken and then to get the check took some time even during off-hours for brunch, though it was a Saturday * When you arrive you can put your name down on an iPad they have outside to get on the Yelp waitlist ------ AMBIANCE / ENVIRONMENT: * No frills, wooden tables, just felt like your local spot that's been dutifully serving its neighborhood for many years * Great place for a casual catch up with friends (if you're near the area). They can comfortably accommodate tables of up to 6 people, and for anything above 6 you just need to speak with them * Parking can be a bit tough to find in this area but there are so many streets nearby where you might be able to find an opening, so budget in 10 extra minutes * The neighborhood in general was so cute and residential. Lots of dogs, felt super safe, and some cute shops nearby, though this street of stores / restaurants is not very long read more

Deliciousness all around...except the regular coffee. I had the bananas foster French toast and it was amazing. Unlike anything I would usually order so I'm glad I did. The place was packed mid morning on a weekday. Service was good and attentive. The cheese plate and burger are my go to but they n this last visit they had a seasonal Cassoulet and braised duck leg with sausage and white beans was perfect for a cold evening. Zazie used to be one of my favorite restaurants. I even celebrated my birthday here earlier this year, so it's really tough to write this review, but I had a pretty bad experience last night. I called a couple of hours beforehand and made a same day reservation for three at 8 p.m. I was amazed they could get us in. The guy who answered the phone was so nice. We arrived right at 8 and were seated on the back patio. Our server took a little while to greet us, but by about 8:15 she showed up and we immediately ordered our salad and entrees. The heirloom tomato salad came out around 8:30 and was great in concept, though a few more pieces of cheese would have made a big difference. Our entrees, two salmon dishes and a medium-rare steak, came out around 9 p.m. We had waited a little too long, especially since the restaurant was not very full at that point. My steak was overdone, so as politely as possible, I sent it back. The server said it wouldn't take long, so I assumed 15 minutes at most. By 9:20, the steak still had not arrived and my family had finished eating. The server came by and said it would be out in another couple of minutes. Another 10 minutes passed, and there was still no steak and no sign of the server. At 9:30, I was so frustrated that I got up to cancel it. I found the server standing near the kitchen talking with other servers, while my steak was just sitting there in the service window. I'm sorry, but I did not come to a restaurant at 8 p.m. to eat my entree at 9:30 or later, after everyone else had already finished. What made it worse was that the server was not apologetic at all. We also ran out of water multiple times throughout the evening. Overall, it felt like the staff, other than the host, just didn't care. Neither the kitchen nor the server. I don't know if it's the no-tip model, but it definitely felt like an authentic European zero-customer-service type of experience. I'm really disappointed, Zazie. I know you can do better. read more

Cute homey satisfying French food that's not too stuffy. We sat in the back patio, which was lovely. I think the restaurant itself can feel a little cramped. Note prices on the menu look high but already include tip. For the four of us, we ordered the mushroom fondue, lyonnaise salad, and mussels as appetizers and the pork chop, seafood stew, and pasta for mains. Everything was quite good. The highlights were the pork chop (juicy and tender) and the seafood stew (well seasoned and hearty and lots of fresh seafood). We probably could have ordered one fewer main though Would recommend for a nice dinner or date night! read more

Came here for brunch with a friend on a Sunday and had about a 10 min wait for a table. I ordered the pancake flight and le muni mocktail. Both were really good! The gingerbread pancake was my favorite of the three (it tasted like a gingerbread cookie in pancake form!), then the French toast, and then the regular pancake. My friend said the burger was solid and also enjoyed the hot chocolate. The hot chocolate comes served in a bowl, which was fun, and wasn't too sweet. We were a party of four for dinner, and unfortunately the service was very disappointing. Our initial round of drinks arrived in two waves. Two drinks were delivered, followed by a roughly 10-minute wait before the other two arrived. The same thing happened with our entrées, except the delay was closer to 15+ minutes. The servers offered somewhat rushed apologies, and one explained that they were "having problems in the kitchen tonight." With some of our party having worked in a restaurant, we understand that things can go wrong, and an occasional kitchen delay is certainly understandable. What was disappointing was the lack of any meaningful effort to acknowledge the inconvenience or make it right (especially in light of the fact that the total bill was $400+). For example, it would have gone a long way for a server or manager to say something along the lines of, "We apologize again for the delays with your drinks and entrées. Dessert is on us tonight." Instead, the delays were essentially acknowledged and then left at that. Management should consider doing a better job of training servers to recognize when a service issue has materially affected a guest's experience--and, just as importantly, giving them the authority and discretion to do something reasonable to make it right. Problems will inevitably occur in a restaurant; how they are recognized and handled can make a significant difference in the overall dining experience. Overall, the experience was less enjoyable than it should have been, primarily because of the service and the way the delays were handled. read more

Zazie is such a cute brunch restaurant to meet up with friends, the back patio has the best shaded earthy ambiance. I've been here several times with groups, most weekends you can expect to wait about 20 min for a table at peak brunch hours. Decided to have brunch at Zazie because one of us wanted the ambience of a garden setting and, besides, I'd been wanting to try Zazie for quite awhile now. There were three of us in our party. I got there first, so I used their waitlist system (an iPad right outside their door) to put our name in the system. Because I specified garden seating only, it took about half an hour before we could be seated, but it didn't matter since we were chatting anyway. Getting to the back patio was a bit of a squeeze. You have to walk through a narrow area where the waitstaff was picking up the plates of food. You have to squeeze between them and the counter. It would've been fine, but I felt that some of the waitstaff got a bit impatient or frustrated having us walk through that area. Maybe it was just me, but it would've helped if they were a bit more friendly and didn't act as if I was in the way. Once we were seated, the waitperson came immediately to take our drink orders. She gave us time after bringing our drinks to peruse the menu and decide. I had the single eggs florentine with the house potatoes ($19) and a cup of coffee ($6). One friend had the eggs only that came with toast and potatoes ($15) and the other had a poached egg with chicken apple sausage and toast ($19). We were all pretty happy with our food. After we were served, it was a bit difficult getting the waitperson's attention for a coffee refill, but, I have to say, she was pretty busy with other diners, so it wasn't a deal breaker. I would probably go back if others wanted to, but now that I've been, I'm okay trying other places, too. Even with the gratuities included, it was pretty pricey for a single florentine benedict. read more

The food tastes pretty good, but was definitely not worth the price. Don't get me wrong, I am happy to pay a premium for a quality meal. However, at $23, I'd expect my avocados to not be browned... There was also a long wait to be seated and for food to arrive, and the path to walk to the back was wet and cramped. Seated right away when the restaurant opened (9am) in the weekend. The interior design was lovely, also a few seats in the patio as well. The waiter was super friendly, ordered a cannes scramble ($28) and the griddle flight ($33). In my opinion, although the prices include tips, it is still pretty pricey. The griddle flight is super unique: one pancake, one French toast, and one gingerbread pancake with roasted pear and lemon curd. Gingerbread pancake needs to be eaten with lemon curd since it is slightly dry, no need for syrup. Scramble eggs were delicious, more runny eggs, each bite was filled with balanced with the ingredients. Potatoes have a lot of fragrant flavor since it is cooked in a lot of garlic.
