Came on a night when they serve their smashed burgers in brioche bun. It's beefy and flavorful. Very satisfying. The fries are probably twice fried. Crunchy and still retained a semi tender center. It's voodoo magic good. Also tried their sour dough pappardelle. It has a pretty pronounced fresh asparagus note. It's a very satisfying dish. It's a beautiful day. How about a nice drive out along the great highway/ocean beach? Done! A drive out to ocean beach used to mean stopping by the Cliff House but that still isn't even close to being reopened, or "reimagined" yet. Sigh. How about Dutch pancakes? Dutch pancakes means that the first stop is Outerlands. We ordered Dutch pancakes online on the way. Easy breezy. Good thing too because there was still a line for a table even though they were closing in a half hour. The hostess was personable & sweet, despite the fact that it was packed, inside & out. We then headed to Ocean Beach to enjoy our breakfast in the sea air with an ocean view. Crispy on the outside, but custardy in the inside. So people will hover around your table waiting for you to give up your seat. Everything was mild in flavor, and forgettable. For the price I expect a lot more. Smashed Potatoes A classic done well. The salsa was good, but they could've been a bit more generous with it. Lacked salt. Potato Leek Soup Hearty, but lacked salt. Scallion Milk Bread Bland and boring. It barely had any scallions. The "miso" butter was also lacking miso. Pecan Brioche Sticky Bun Extremely yummy. Brioche was wondeful, pecan flavor was present, everything you need in a great pastry. Dutch Pancake The center was nice and custardy, but the rest of the pancake was too airy. Fried Mortadella Sandwich Unremarkable and plain. Breakfast Sandwich Way too expensive. The smashed potatoes with salsa verde and aioli are a must order for us, and the brioche pecan sticky bun is so good. Their switch to counter ordering helps move the lines, but it also makes Outerlands feel more like a cafe than restaurant, but with a better menu. Baked goods are always good, but egg options are pretty limited for a brunch menu: just a breakfast sandwich and a rice congee with a soft egg added. (I'd personally love to see a few more egg options.) There is a chia bowl, a Dutch pancake, French toast, pastries, espresso drinks and more lunch-friendly options like salads, soup and sandwiches (including a mortadella sandwich.) Been wanting to return for awhile and was a bit disappointed on Valentine's Day. Surprisingly, the line wasn't long and the system changed to picking a number sign from an unseated table, order and sit back where the sign was, which, for us, was at the counter. Right in front of us was a woman making drinks and was clearly overwhelmed with the orders. We were served our smoked salmon toast and focaccia sandwich, which my daughter said was overpowered by saltiness in the pesto. We finished our meals, plates were taken away, and our drinks still didn't arrive. First, we were given the wrong order and then it took a little more while for our hot ginger lemon tea and Sunset Fog. Outerlands as a venue is amazing; I loved the woodwork and the whole natural vibe of the place! To top that off, the service was exemplary; our wait person was friendly, knowledgeable, efficient, and attentive; couldn't ask for anything more. I went specifically for the smash burger and it was great except it was more like a regular burger. I'm accustomed to having the crispy, frilly edges around a smash burger and this didn't have that. It was also a thicker burger than a "smash" burger. It was still a delicious burger, so I was okay with it. Everyone at the table except for one person ordered the burger, too, and they seemed to really enjoy it. It was pretty big, so many of us only ate half and took the other half home. One of the diners at my table ordered the broccolini for everyone to try. The wait person had said it was one of her favorite dishes and, I have to agree, it was fantastic! The only other issue I had was that they charged tax on the 5% service charge and the 5% SF Health Mandate, so I ended up paying $10 more than I should have paid. We were a large group and that little extra charge that the group members didn't pay ended up coming out of my own pocket. The tax should have been only on the food, not on the other stuff! Objects are smaller than they appear in photos. The patty was tasty, but it was really overdone, especially for a patty that was thin. The produce was okay. It's produce. Stopped by Outerlands for dinner. We ordered the bread to start, which was fantastic. Very soft and pillowy, and the butter was delicious and salty. Our waiter, who was very friendly, told us that some people just order a boule of bread to go. For my main, I got the roasted chicken. This was a bit disappointing, as the meat was a bit dry. For ~$35, I expected at least a juicy, tender bird. The salad it came with wasn't bad though. If I ever do come back, I will be ordering something else, as I can easily roast a better chicken at home. Overall, a cute local spot in the outer sunset. Dutch pancake ($20) is so special and rare. It's poufy and airy inside and crunchy on the outside. The housemade ricotta is very mild and lacks a milky flavor, and not worth the extra $2. I asked for maple syrup on the side but they just gave it to me all together - which just made some bites sweet and soggy while the other bites were just bread. I wish the syrup came on the side by default. Little gem salad $24 - we got it for the smoked salmon, which was the best part! Not too salty. But protein portion is pretty small. Scrambled egg add on was delicious and soft. The bread that comes with it is so hard and inedible. Luckily we ordered house bread toast on the side which was much better. But it was still too burnt. But can't believe the toast and butter is both a separate charge each, like I wish there was more clarification while ordering or on the menu. Overall, while ordering at the front felt pretty rushed, not very helpful, and actually rude. My server was so friendly and genuine and took excellent care of me! The walls and ceiling are made from weathered wood and all the food is local and organic. Chef Landa prepares delicious, hearty, and attractive appetizers, meals and desserts. I ordered the beans and greens: bone broth, cannellini beans, kale, and grana padano cheese, served with pain au levain.. it was so good! I also enjoyed a hibiscus margarita, which was beautiful and refreshing, and took home a chocolate chip cookie for dessert. Yum! We came on a Saturday for brunch, and surprisingly only waited about 10 minutes for a table on their patio. Once your table is ready, they ask what you'd like to order before seating you. However, the buns were so soft and fluffy so that made up for it! Overall a great brunch on a sunny day in the city! It was good the first time we went but after that, I ordered it to go. First time the steak was very small portioned and I thought it might be a fluke. So I tried it again but it was the same. Unfortunately not coming here again because the price is quite hefty to get 5 pieces of steak. The only reason it looked full is because I paid for an extra egg. We arrived at around 12:30pm on a Sunday, and waited for about 20min to get a number stand so we can place the order at the front. Need to pay the bill plus tips first before getting seated. Latte $6 I got the latte which is a little more on the sour side. Rosé Blend, Martha Stoumen, Post Flirtation $16 Husband got the Rosé Blend from California to pair with the brunch. It was made with 75% Zinfandel, 15% Valdiguié, and 10% Nero d'Avola. French Toast with egg $25 Originally, we ordered the Steak & Egg but it was oversold, and the waiter came to us to apologize and we decided to switched to French Toast. It was made with house levain, maple syrup, strawberry, and almonds. We added an egg on the side for $5. Dutch Pancake $20 I got the popular Dutch pancake, and before it has sweet and salty flavors to pick from, but now only one. The flavor of the day is strawberry rhubarb syrup, blackberry, and pecan. It was very crunchy on the crust, and sweet and soft inside. Asparagus & spring onion galette $19 Since they ran out of the Steak & Egg, the kitchen made this on the house for us, so we will have something savory to pair with. We tried this place on a Thursday, which was nice because it wasn't too busy and were seated right away. This is a great spot for families - they had a high chair, paper, colored pencils and menu ready to go as we sat down. The place is casual too so you don't have to worry about your outfit. Music playlist was fun - lots of Soccer Mommy, Tame Impala, Toro y Moi vibes. Food was very tasty. I got the bucatini with clams and we ordered some of their "pain" or bread for the table. The interior of the restaurant is super unique, lots of wood and kind of a dark, moody vibe. Dutch baby - this is a new dish to me, so not sure what is normal. The interior was nice and soft and custardy with sweet strawberries and maple syrup and pecans. The edges of the pancake however, were very dry and crackly and I didn't enjoy that part as much. For $20 I wouldn't order this again. Smashed potatoes - nice and crispy exterior and creamy interior. The aïoli doesn't have too much flavor, but it is a nice creamy sauce. We went with a large group and had incredible service here. Everyone was so kind and attentive. It was our friends birthday and they really took the time to make us feel special! The menu had so many yumm options. We loved the appetizers. The kale salad, bread and broccolini were very flavorful. I wish I had gotten the roasted chicken (large enough to share)! Feb 28 order: When I walked in and placed my take-out order, I clearly stated that I was gluten-free and proceeded to order 2 chicken dishes. I also ordered food for my family that included the pasta dish, soup, and bread. When I got home with the food, I was very disappointed to find that I couldn't eat the vegetables that had come with the chicken, as they were covered with bread! That's terrible. I had a chance to try Outerlands for brunch today and it was an awesome experience! This spot was located in the outer sunset and thankfully there was a lot of street parking nearby. This spot is located near Ocean Beach and Golden gate park which is nice. We got here around 1PM and thankfully there was only a 10 minute wait which was nice. The service here was also great. For food we ordered: *Smashed potatoes - my husband and I love crispy potatoes so of course we had to get this! This went really well with out other entrees and the garlic aioli it came with was yummy *Breakfast sandwich - this was delicious with a fried egg, a refreshing arugula salad, aioli and of course I had to add some bacon! The sandwich was delicious and I have to say the sandwich buns were delicious and soft! *Dutch pancake - This was a little underwhelming but came with a strawberry rhubarb sauce, pecans and blackberries. I've had Outerlands on my radar for a few months, but never found myself in Outer Sunset at dinner time. But on a warm, sunny Friday afternoon in February, I took a long walk on the beach, then ambled over to Outerlands, following behinds a few guys in wetsuits carrying their boards back to their apartments. A perfect and all too rare Outer Sunset evening. I'd read about the food, but hadn't given much thought to the restaurant itself. So I was both surprised and pleased to learn they had several tables on the sidewalk. I can't resist eating outdoors when it's warm and still after sunset, so we got to enjoy the remarkably warm weather with a great glass of stout while we made up our minds. When a restaurant's vegetables sound more interesting than their animal protein I always go veggie and I'm very glad I did. House made sourdough bread with salty butter started us off, followed by hamachi crudo, tomato-based cauliflower, roasted Brussels sprouts, radicchio salad, and pappardelle with stracciatella filled our small table and our happy bellies. The servers were friendly and knowledgable, the noise from the N train was strangely comforting, and we never felt rushed. The vibe was just right, and all of our dishes were prepared with careful execution. Everything had a distinctive flavor, but nothing was overdone or performative. Every spice seemed like it belonged there in just that proportion. I look foward to returning to Outerlands when we get another warm, still night. I hope that's soon! read more

Loved loved loved this place! I was a bit nervous to try it out since I saw that there was no way to make a reservation for the weekend and we had to just brave any line. We showed up on a Saturday around 12pm and the wait was pretty minimal--approximately 10 minutes or so-- and were given menus to look at prior to being seated so that we could order and have a minimal wait time and pay beforehand. We opted for the Smoked Salmon Toast, Veggie Grain Bowl, Dutch Pancake, and Breakfast Sandwich. For drinks we got water, a Carajillo, and the Last Word. There was ample seating in both sections and it was pretty cozy--people with dogs were just chilling outdoors while it seemed like most people opted to go indoors. It was almost like an updated rustic setting/area. The food came out pretty quickly and almost all at the same time. The Salmon Toast was a hefty portion and was a quasi lox and bagel with extra onions and cucumbers. Delicious! The Breakfast Sandwich was also generous for the size and came out open faced with a huge amount of egg and cheese, few slices of bacon and what seemed to be a side salad. The Veggie Grain Bowl was mouthwatering and chocked full of grains, greens, and what appeared to be hummus. It was as tasty as it was pretty. The Dutch Pancake seemed to be what we were all ordering (almost every table had one) and was pretty tasty with the apricot, strawberry, and pecan combo. The way this place works is you order and pay ahead with the hostess, then you get seated inside or outside. I feel like whenever I get French toast somewhere I feel gross because it's too eggy or greasy but I didn't feel like that at all after eating this. We shared the breakfast sandwich, which I highly recommend adding avocado and smoked pork shoulder to. The potato bun was the perfect texture, the fried egg was spot on, and the pork shoulder just took it to the next level. It worked so well with the creaminess of the avocado. The dutch pancake featured peach as the seasonal fruit and was also excellent. The addition of house-made ricotta is a must! We loved dining here - it was lively but not a stuffy atmosphere. TLDR; overpriced and kind of bland. Let's start with the positive. The vibe is cool and the service is friendly. And the open kitchen allows you to see the food (or at least the most popular dishes) before you order. As for the food, the hush puppies were the best I've ever had, and my wife really enjoyed the cornbread. The wine menu is also solid and the food & bev manager (or whoever our server consulted with for a pairing) knew it well. However, our entrees were disappointing. The pork stew, butternut squash risotto, and mac-n-cheese all lacked flavor. Perhaps we would not have noticed had we been a little tipsy, but the drinks took a long time to come out (as did the food). A wonderful spot when in the ocean beach area. The food is amazing and the restaurant has a great vibe and music. They have I door and outdoor patio seating. Be site to get the smashed potatoes and the homemade cider - WOW!! read more

5 Star service 5 Star food 5 Star ambiance 5 Star dining experience Tip: This is the often cold & foggy avenues, so dress accordingly, it's not heated inside. For the outdoorsy, a nice parklet. The music is semi-loud, until the crowd mostly drowns it out. So it works like this. Super friendly & helpful guy standing outside at a podium takes your order. You pay. (Hope this isn't some random guy I gave my cc to! ). Opens for brunch at 9am. By 10a the place was 3/4 full. Check their listing for hours. Dinner starts at 5p. Menu might vary from Yelp listing. This isn't a linger with your laptop kind of place, hence, my kind of place. I get so annoyed watching people sit all day nursing a coffee. At least buy more food. Ok, rant over. Determined to continue my quest for the perfect avocado toast, which was currently off the menu, I customized, with no attitude given. I ordered the breakfast sandwich, hold the aioli, add avocado & bacon. Oh, & substitute the brioche bun for levin toast. I am so not high maintenance! The dish came with a generous portion of perfectly dressed greens. Parking is difficult, so it's fantastic that the MUNI N Judah stops 1/2 block from the restaurant.
