I was bummed we didn't have time to stay for dinner, but we grabbed seats at the bar, shared the AMAZING tomato soup and bread, and had a couple cocktails. After hearing so much about Outerlands over the years, I was excited to finally give it a try for brunch with my in laws. Unfortunately, I left feeling like the experience simply didn't justify the hype or the price. To start with the positives, the pecan brioche sticky bun was genuinely delicious. At $8 it was hard to justify the price for the size, but the flavor was excellent. The smash potatoes were also very well done, crispy, flavorful, and easily one of the better items we ordered, even if $10 felt steep for the portion. Everything else, however, left us scratching our heads. My in laws ordered the breakfast sandwich, which starts at $17 without the sausage. Adding the sausage brought it to an astonishing $23, and honestly, it was a pretty average breakfast sandwich. We all agreed we could have walked a block over to Devil's Teeth and gotten something larger, more satisfying, and nearly half the price. We also ordered the fried mortadella sandwich, which came in at $18. It tasted fine, but at the end of the day it felt like an expensive deli sandwich that didn't do enough to justify the cost. The biggest disappointment was the Dutch pancake. At $20, we expected something memorable. Instead, it arrived overcooked around the edges while the center was an absolute runny mess. It was easily the weakest dish of the meal. The dining experience itself also felt a bit strange. We were a party of five, and were asked if we'd be willing to share our table in case another group of three came in. I understand restaurants trying to maximize seating, but it made the meal feel less comfortable than we'd hoped. The saving grace of our visit was the staff. Everyone we interacted with was genuinely friendly, accommodating, and welcoming. They were the highlight of the experience and made us feel well taken care of despite our disappointment with the food. I can appreciate that Outerlands has built a loyal following over the years, but after this visit I just don't understand the hype. We started with their asparagus appetizer with pickled onion and a very nice aioli with trout and finely chopped walnuts. We're off to a good start with this very well thought out and composed dish. Came on a night when they serve their smashed burgers in brioche bun. It's beefy and flavorful. Very satisfying. The fries are probably twice fried. Crunchy and still retained a semi tender center. It's voodoo magic good. Also tried their sour dough pappardelle. It has a pretty pronounced fresh asparagus note. It's a very satisfying dish. Don't you just love Saturday mornings? Unlike the frazzled workday mornings, I relish the weekends when I can relax & let the day just evolve. Sleep in. Check. Take your sweet time making coffee. Good thing too because there was still a line for a table even though they were closing in a half hour. The hostess was personable & sweet, despite the fact that it was packed, inside & out. We then headed to Ocean Beach to enjoy our breakfast in the sea air with an ocean view. Crispy on the outside, but custardy in the inside. The smashed potatoes with salsa verde and aioli are a must order for us, and the brioche pecan sticky bun is so good. Their switch to counter ordering helps move the lines, but it also makes Outerlands feel more like a cafe than restaurant, but with a better menu. Baked goods are always good, but egg options are pretty limited for a brunch menu: just a breakfast sandwich and a rice congee with a soft egg added. (I'd personally love to see a few more egg options.) There is a chia bowl, a Dutch pancake, French toast, pastries, espresso drinks and more lunch-friendly options like salads, soup and sandwiches (including a mortadella sandwich.) Fog hangs over this neighborhood, and the beachy feel and friendly staff make it a cozy, casual brunch stop. read more

Got a gift card for my birthday so my bestie and I went there for early dinner at 5:00 pm when they opened. Place filled up pretty quickly but it was a sunny day in SF, so plenty of seating outside too. We decided to sit inside because I really loved the earthy wood decor. Outerlands as a venue is amazing; I loved the woodwork and the whole natural vibe of the place! To top that off, the service was exemplary; our wait person was friendly, knowledgeable, efficient, and attentive; couldn't ask for anything more. I went specifically for the smash burger and it was great except it was more like a regular burger. I'm accustomed to having the crispy, frilly edges around a smash burger and this didn't have that. It was also a thicker burger than a "smash" burger. It was still a delicious burger, so I was okay with it. Everyone at the table except for one person ordered the burger, too, and they seemed to really enjoy it. It was pretty big, so many of us only ate half and took the other half home. One of the diners at my table ordered the broccolini for everyone to try. The wait person had said it was one of her favorite dishes and, I have to agree, it was fantastic! The only other issue I had was that they charged tax on the 5% service charge and the 5% SF Health Mandate, so I ended up paying $10 more than I should have paid. Once seated, I opted for the daily/weekly "special" which is why I was there... the burger! Things I enjoyed. The cold ketchup. The fries weren't seasoned. Things that were a hot mess: The burger. Objects are smaller than they appear in photos. The patty was tasty, but it was really overdone, especially for a patty that was thin. The produce was okay. It's produce. Been wanting to return for awhile and was a bit disappointed on Valentine's Day. Surprisingly, the line wasn't long and the system changed to picking a number sign from an unseated table, order and sit back where the sign was, which, for us, was at the counter. Right in front of us was a woman making drinks and was clearly overwhelmed with the orders. We were served our smoked salmon toast and focaccia sandwich, which my daughter said was overpowered by saltiness in the pesto. We finished our meals, plates were taken away, and our drinks still didn't arrive. First, we were given the wrong order and then it took a little more while for our hot ginger lemon tea and Sunset Fog. Stopped by Outerlands for dinner. We ordered the bread to start, which was fantastic. Very soft and pillowy, and the butter was delicious and salty. Our waiter, who was very friendly, told us that some people just order a boule of bread to go. For my main, I got the roasted chicken. This was a bit disappointing, as the meat was a bit dry. For ~$35, I expected at least a juicy, tender bird. The salad it came with wasn't bad though. If I ever do come back, I will be ordering something else, as I can easily roast a better chicken at home. Overall, a cute local spot in the outer sunset. Dutch pancake ($20) is so special and rare. It's poufy and airy inside and crunchy on the outside. The housemade ricotta is very mild and lacks a milky flavor, and not worth the extra $2. I asked for maple syrup on the side but they just gave it to me all together - which just made some bites sweet and soggy while the other bites were just bread. I wish the syrup came on the side by default. Little gem salad $24 - we got it for the smoked salmon, which was the best part! Not too salty. But protein portion is pretty small. Scrambled egg add on was delicious and soft. The bread that comes with it is so hard and inedible. Luckily we ordered house bread toast on the side which was much better. But it was still too burnt. But can't believe the toast and butter is both a separate charge each, like I wish there was more clarification while ordering or on the menu. Overall, while ordering at the front felt pretty rushed, not very helpful, and actually rude. Outerlands is a lovely oasis of fresh baked bread and homemade soup in the Sunset District. I booked dinner reservations here for my birthday and was warmly greeted with a glass of sparkling rosé. My server was so friendly and genuine and took excellent care of me! The walls and ceiling are made from weathered wood and all the food is local and organic. Chef Landa prepares delicious, hearty, and attractive appetizers, meals and desserts. I ordered the beans and greens: bone broth, cannellini beans, kale, and grana padano cheese, served with pain au levain.. it was so good! I also enjoyed a hibiscus margarita, which was beautiful and refreshing, and took home a chocolate chip cookie for dessert. Yum! We came on a Saturday for brunch, and surprisingly only waited about 10 minutes for a table on their patio. Once your table is ready, they ask what you'd like to order before seating you. I was surprised as we were not told this, and had not looked at the menu, but no biggie. Luckily the menu is not large, so we took a couple minutes to decide. It was just a bit awkward since they stared and waited We ordered the salmon toast, breakfast sandwich and Dutch pancake. The pancake was delicious and the berries were sweet. The salmon toast was great as well, but could use a few more slices of salmon. The breakfast sandwich was a bit small, and would be more filling if it had a sausage patty or few strips of bacon. However, the buns were so soft and fluffy so that made up for it! Overall a great brunch on a sunny day in the city! I would suggest that when they take your name down to wait for a table, that you look over the menu and decide what you want so you are ready when they call your name. Latte $6 I got the latte which is a little more on the sour side. Rosé Blend, Martha Stoumen, Post Flirtation $16 Husband got the Rosé Blend from California to pair with the brunch. It was made with 75% Zinfandel, 15% Valdiguié, and 10% Nero d'Avola. French Toast with egg $25 Originally, we ordered the Steak & Egg but it was oversold, and the waiter came to us to apologize and we decided to switched to French Toast. It was made with house levain, maple syrup, strawberry, and almonds. We added an egg on the side for $5. Dutch Pancake $20 I got the popular Dutch pancake, and before it has sweet and salty flavors to pick from, but now only one. The flavor of the day is strawberry rhubarb syrup, blackberry, and pecan. It was very crunchy on the crust, and sweet and soft inside. Asparagus & spring onion galette $19 Since they ran out of the Steak & Egg, the kitchen made this on the house for us, so we will have something savory to pair with. It was good the first time we went but after that, I ordered it to go. First time the steak was very small portioned and I thought it might be a fluke. So I tried it again but it was the same. Unfortunately not coming here again because the price is quite hefty to get 5 pieces of steak. The only reason it looked full is because I paid for an extra egg. We tried this place on a Thursday, which was nice because it wasn't too busy and were seated right away. This is a great spot for families - they had a high chair, paper, colored pencils and menu ready to go as we sat down. The place is casual too so you don't have to worry about your outfit. Music playlist was fun - lots of Soccer Mommy, Tame Impala, Toro y Moi vibes. Food was very tasty. I got the bucatini with clams and we ordered some of their "pain" or bread for the table. Review is for brunch. There was about a ~30min wait when we arrived at 11 on a Sunday. You order at the host station then get seated and food gets brought to you. Food comes out quick! The interior of the restaurant is super unique, lots of wood and kind of a dark, moody vibe. Dutch baby - this is a new dish to me, so not sure what is normal. The interior was nice and soft and custardy with sweet strawberries and maple syrup and pecans. The edges of the pancake however, were very dry and crackly and I didn't enjoy that part as much. For $20 I wouldn't order this again. Smashed potatoes - nice and crispy exterior and creamy interior. The aïoli doesn't have too much flavor, but it is a nice creamy sauce. The menu had so many yumm options. We loved the appetizers. The kale salad, bread and broccolini were very flavorful. I wish I had gotten the roasted chicken (large enough to share)! I had a chance to try Outerlands for brunch today and it was an awesome experience! This spot was located in the outer sunset and thankfully there was a lot of street parking nearby. This spot is located near Ocean Beach and Golden gate park which is nice. We got here around 1PM and thankfully there was only a 10 minute wait which was nice. The service here was also great. For food we ordered: *Smashed potatoes - my husband and I love crispy potatoes so of course we had to get this! This went really well with out other entrees and the garlic aioli it came with was yummy *Breakfast sandwich - this was delicious with a fried egg, a refreshing arugula salad, aioli and of course I had to add some bacon! The sandwich was delicious and I have to say the sandwich buns were delicious and soft! *Dutch pancake - This was a little underwhelming but came with a strawberry rhubarb sauce, pecans and blackberries. Loved loved loved this place! I was a bit nervous to try it out since I saw that there was no way to make a reservation for the weekend and we had to just brave any line. We showed up on a Saturday around 12pm and the wait was pretty minimal--approximately 10 minutes or so-- and were given menus to look at prior to being seated so that we could order and have a minimal wait time and pay beforehand. We opted for the Smoked Salmon Toast, Veggie Grain Bowl, Dutch Pancake, and Breakfast Sandwich. For drinks we got water, a Carajillo, and the Last Word. We ended up sitting indoors, but it was still pretty mild outdoors which would've been fine also. There was ample seating in both sections and it was pretty cozy--people with dogs were just chilling outdoors while it seemed like most people opted to go indoors. It was almost like an updated rustic setting/area. The food came out pretty quickly and almost all at the same time. The Salmon Toast was a hefty portion and was a quasi lox and bagel with extra onions and cucumbers. Delicious! The Breakfast Sandwich was also generous for the size and came out open faced with a huge amount of egg and cheese, few slices of bacon and what seemed to be a side salad. The Veggie Grain Bowl was mouthwatering and chocked full of grains, greens, and what appeared to be hummus. It was as tasty as it was pretty. The Dutch Pancake seemed to be what we were all ordering (almost every table had one) and was pretty tasty with the apricot, strawberry, and pecan combo. Saturday morning we walked right up to the line, placed our order and were seated in 5-10 minutes (table for 2 outside) as soon as we sat down our food and drinks came out right away. This place is perfectly located near the beach with soooooo many dogs to watch! We didn't sit inside but walked around in there and the layout is beautiful and inviting. Nice clean bathrooms! We ordered the Chicken Bone Broth soup, which came in a mug- the taste of the chili was very apparent, I could taste the chives, and the soup was piping hot. The ginger and lemon flavors could be drawn out a bit more however, perhaps the chili overwhelmed it. The heirloom tomato salad was the best I've had. The tomatoes are so fresh and ripe, you could barely taste the ricotta, it feels like it is almost blended in there. The pepper was perfectly layered on top. The roasted chicken was done well, tender, and the shallot vinaigrette helped to balance the savory taste of the chicken with a tart salad. The pork chop was a bit dry. For dessert, loved the chocolate rye cake, the center was moist but exterior was hardened, and the Tahini buttercream on top was so complimentary. Came on a Friday for brunch and it was pretty empty, my party of 3 was seated pretty much immediately. The way this place works is you order and pay ahead with the hostess, then you get seated inside or outside. I ordered the French toast with a side of bacon and I'm not really a breakfast person but it was pretty good. It wasn't too sweet and it was light which is not common for a French toast. I feel like whenever I get French toast somewhere I feel gross because it's too eggy or greasy but I didn't feel like that at all after eating this. I've had Outerlands on my radar for a few months, but never found myself in Outer Sunset at dinner time. But on a warm, sunny Friday afternoon in February, I took a long walk on the beach, then ambled over to Outerlands, following behinds a few guys in wetsuits carrying their boards back to their apartments. A perfect and all too rare Outer Sunset evening. I'd read about the food, but hadn't given much thought to the restaurant itself. So I was both surprised and pleased to learn they had several tables on the sidewalk. I can't resist eating outdoors when it's warm and still after sunset, so we got to enjoy the remarkably warm weather with a great glass of stout while we made up our minds. When a restaurant's vegetables sound more interesting than their animal protein I always go veggie and I'm very glad I did. House made sourdough bread with salty butter started us off, followed by hamachi crudo, tomato-based cauliflower, roasted Brussels sprouts, radicchio salad, and pappardelle with stracciatella filled our small table and our happy bellies. The servers were friendly and knowledgable, the noise from the N train was strangely comforting, and we never felt rushed. The vibe was just right, and all of our dishes were prepared with careful execution. Everything had a distinctive flavor, but nothing was overdone or performative. Every spice seemed like it belonged there in just that proportion. I look foward to returning to Outerlands when we get another warm, still night. I hope that's soon! read more

Feb 28 order: When I walked in and placed my take-out order, I clearly stated that I was gluten-free and proceeded to order 2 chicken dishes. I also ordered food for my family that included the pasta dish, soup, and bread. When I got home with the food, I was very disappointed to find that I couldn't eat the vegetables that had come with the chicken, as they were covered with bread! That's terrible. All I could eat was the chicken. And wouldn't you know this was my birthday dinner--how sad. Outerlands should definitely be more cognizant when customers clearly state a food allergy. Note: I emailed this to Outerlands the next day and never got a response. Really poor customer service. read more

We came on a Saturday at noon, hoping for a short wait. Greeted by the host who was super nice 4.5/5 We waited about 10-15 minutes and got promptly seated. Inside is beautiful 4/5 We ordered coffee (4./5, bright and citrus) and apple cider (4.5/5) two breakfast sandwiches (4.5/5) Habanero sauce Yumm (about $50 total) Would definitely come back! read more
