First the line was visibly long from up the block but didn't stop people from standing in line. I walked to the restaurant about 15-20 minutes after they opened, didn't have to wait long got to seat at the bar. The food and drinks are worth traveling out to the fog for but really, it's the staff who have kept us coming back because of how warm they always make us feel when we eat there. My partner did get a painful splinter from her wooden chair but that may have been operator error. The kale salad was delicious (big ups for *ample* pecorino), but it would have been over the top great if there was a vegetarian protein option (salmon is the only one listed) and if the golden beets weren't cut so slim as to be barely noticeable. In essence, it was very satisfying but lacked the variety of flavor and texture to make it feel like a centerpiece. Even so, I'd happily have it again. I'll start off my review by saying that the vibe and staff are absolutely lovely. The reason for the 3 review is that the food does not match the price. We ordered 2 drinks, 2 smash burgers, & 2 chocolate chips cookies. Our total plus tip came to $100. We were also charged almost $8 is service fees/ healthcare for the staff. The burger was dry and the fries were way too salty. At least the cookie saved the experience and was a hit. I love living in the neighborhood and being able to walk to a brunch spot that's close to the ocean and the park. Met some friends here for brunch and had the salmon toast with coffee, both were really good, and my friends enjoyed their food too. The staff were friendly and helped make the experience enjoyable. Sitting outside on a sunny day is always a plus when you can get that in the Sunset. What I didn't love was the wait, the order first and pay system (guess it makes it more efficient), and the higher prices. Overall, still a great neighborhood spot and one I would definitely recommend if you are in the area. read more

This place has gotten much better over the years! Or maybe I'm just coming on a week night. Came on a Friday night to catch up with some colleagues. It was bysy, but not too crazy. At 6p., we were able to get a table outside. Drinks were strong and delicious. Food was fresh and tasty. Service was a lot better than the first time I came. Came by here for dinner and cocktails recently with some friends. We left disappointed. We ordered the pork chop, roasted chicken and apps to share. We use to come here regularly when we use to live in the neighborhood and food was good and consistent. Unfortunately, the pork chop and chicken was dry. What bothered everybody the most was when we got the check, it had a 5% service fee and 5% health fee. On top of that, 20% gratuity was calculated on top of these fees and the waitress hovered directly over us while we added the tip. Talk about unnecessary pressure! read more

The Dutch pancake was ok but not as good as I've had it. No berries this time. Service was kind of a joke. The staff are completely disorganized. This place has been on my list for a while and I finally made it out to the outer sunset to give it a try! I went on a Friday around 11:15 with a friend and there was no line. We each ordered a squash and salmon toast and really enjoyed both. My squash toast was a perfect blend of savory and sweet with persimmons and a glaze and really hit the brunch spot. The labneh, mint, and cranberries tied it all together. The bread it was on was also so good! I enjoyed the food and definitely will come back to try the dutch pancake and other items as they rotate their menu. The interior was also quite nice. As a note for brunch, they do make you order and pay before you sit so you don't have really have a designated waiter. I had also seen ahead of time about their kind of hidden surcharges that you tip on top of (which I don't love), but knowing about it ahead of time let me tip accordingly. It's overall pretty good. A few things to note: - Love the rustic ambiance here! -It can get crowded so budget time to wait in line -As others have mentioned, the set up is a bit interesting. You order before you get seated. It feels like they are trying to get so many people through, but thankfully I didn't feel rushed in my meal. -Food is very well-prepared and flavorful. I got the veggie grain bowl which was perfectly seasoned and fresh, albeit a little greasy. -Portion sizes are on the smaller side relative to the price point. -The lemon ginger apple cider was the perfect cozy beverage on a fall day in the Outer Sunset. We've been here for both breakfast and dinner. Both experiences were great, the only downside being the arctic winds while waiting outside for a table. We chose to sit at the bar for dinner as I like to watch bartenders work and make notes for home. Arthur the bartender delivers. Everything Outerlands does is a different version than what you're expecting but better. Their sauces are remarkable but I have to give the full 5 stars to the pork chop on this visit. It was pan seared and I'm used to grilled at home. This chop was cooked perfectly and seared in a pan sauce that was remarkably good. It feel like a lot of places build out their pork with sweet sauces that mask the flavor of the meat itself. This one was perfectly done with a bit of pink and a dark, savory but not sweet finish. Amaze. Arthur Bartender made a series of perfectly executed martinis to go along with the food. My favorite was a Vesper n an ice cold glass. His choice of liquors and the perfect balance of the drink really brought dinner home. Deserts here are also excellent though were typically stuffed by the time we get to them, I may do just a desert and cocktails visit to give them a fair assessment. All around this is one of our favorites in the city, wish it had been here 30 years ago. read more

We love Outerlands! We have lived in San Francisco for over 30 years, are foodies, and it's one of our favorite restaurants in SF. The space is beautiful, welcoming, relaxed and inviting. The cocktails are terrific. The food is super fresh, high-quality, just amazing. We hadn't been there for a few years, since the new owner, Riley took over. Huge improvement over the previous restaurant, which we also liked. But now it is so much better. We sat at the bar, and Arthur took such great care of us, patiently addressing our dietary preferences, and going above and beyond to be accommodating and gracious and generous. We highly recommend the hot spiced apple cider tomato soup bucatini trout and rice pudding for dessert. And make sure to leave with a loaf of bread! Perfection! read more

Inside is beautiful and the service is great, so are the cocktails. But I am disappointed to say that the food seems to be hit or miss depending on the night. We were recommended a pasta, and though the fresh pasta was prepared, well, the dish was incredibly bland, almost as though it should've been on a kids menu. The fried chicken was delicious, but came with no sides and if we had not ordered a salad would not have felt like a complete meal. I'd been wanting to try this place for years as a Sunset resident, but every time we wanted to go, it was later in the day and there was a wait. In the past 2 months we've gone twice now! Both times, we've gone right at opening, and it's been a very pleasant and tasty experience. My partner is not too keen on the ordering format, but perhaps it makes more sense when it gets busy - first, you get in line to put your name down, then you get in another line to order and then they seat you. The interior is super cute with almost everything made of wood. Feels very beachy and Sunset-y. Everything we've ordered tastes delicious, though attached to each item are still SF prices. Been seeing how packed it gets on weekends when I'm in the area so thought I'd give it a try. Tomato Toast: I'm usually not the biggest fan of tomato's but the tomato jam on this blew me away. Really great umami and rich flavor on the jam. I ordered avocado in the side thinking I would need it to cancel out the tomato but didn't even need it. 5/5 Smoked Trout Toast: I was expecting a smoked salmon, cured fish toast but this was different. The fish seemed like it was more cooked than smoked and didn't really have much flavor to it. It was also really dry and unpleasant to eat. 1/5 Dutch Pancakes: I've never had a dutch pancake before so wasn't sure what to expect. Texture was light and fluffy on the inside and slightly crispy on the outside. Whipped cream was perfect and not overly sweet. The peaches were reduced to where it was still chewy and not mush. Candied pecans were a nice touch for crunch and nut flavor. 4/5 Overall, really enjoyed the Tomato Toast and Dutch Pancake. Id come back for those. Id advise against getting the Smoked Trout Toast unless you like dry tasteless fish. read more

They're one of the better brunch spots in San Francisco and have great options for health-conscious foodies. Don't be intimidated by the line; it usually moves fairly quickly. Start with their rotating pastries which are always phenomenal, and the levain toast with house made butter and jam. What a bummer... I use to frequent this place when I lived in the area 2012-2020. It was a great, upscale establishment with farm fresh ingredients and impeccable service. What happened!? Today, you must order and pay outside with a host. Tipping on service tour haven't received. Newsflash, you will not be getting service. No sitting at the table, browsing the menu, enjoying the experience of dining out. No one is your server. If you need anything you have to flag someone down or get it yourself. You pay the high price of a fine dining place with no service. Not cool. Food quality is still good and I appreciate the menu, but didn't knock my socks off how it use to years back. Came for the daily doughnut, which I guess they don't do anymore. Ordered vegetarian biscuit and gravy, Dutch baby, side potatoes, and a scone. They forgot the scone until the end of the meal and I had to ask for it to-go since I was out of coffee and wanted to enjoy it with a cup of joe. Coffee $4.00 NO REFILLS! It was good, but not that good. You can go outside and order another cup of coffee if you finish yours....When I first went years ago we had a Chemex at our table, entire pot for ourselves! They should advertise "no refills" and standard cups of coffee most always come with refills. Cheap. Biscuits and gravy was great for the novelty of being vegetarian. Biscuit was burnt on the bottom, "gravy" was more of a béchamel with large pieces of chewable black pepper I had to spit out, but the mushrooms were perfect. Dutch baby was bready and dry, lacking toppings, with two small slices of peach chopped up. Added on the ricotta for $2, it was a full tablespoon, no more. Asked for maple syrup to get the dense pancake down. Potatoes were perfect with a nice garlic aioli. Won't be coming back unless they revert to normal table service. With these prices we can go to many other lovely places with farm fresh food, coffee refills, and friendly service. This is a hipster's paradise without the appeal of a good experience. Two stars purely for good quality, local food. Everything else is lacking. From the other 1-2 star reviews, it looks like those who knew it before the ownership change agree that it was 5 star before 2022. Sad to see these changes. read more

I've known about this place for years, but I only came for the first time last month. I know it has gone through some changes, but whatever I missed is just fine because I liked it so much, I came back the following weekend! Both times I came on a weekend, both between 9 and 10 am. There was zero wait at 9am (for two people) and a pretty short wait (maybe five minutes for a group of four adults and a baby). I must say, by the end of both meals, there were a lot of people waiting outside. I do understand that this place can get very busy, but I'm a "the earlier the better" type of person and so far, it rings true. First of all, the inside is beautiful. The wood work all around is stunning. The natural lighting is perfect. The space is very photogenic. Went here for brunch on a Sunday morning and the wait time wasn't bad. We waited 15 minutes for a table and were told to pick out what we wanted to order and pay before we sat down. We chose the veggie grain bowl and breakfast sandwich along with a house coffee and chocolate chip cookie. We were shocked when we looked at the receipt as we were charged a 5% service fee and a 5% health mandate fee that we didn't know about. This was frustrating as it wasn't on the menu that these extra prices were added and had put a bad taste in our mouthes as we sat down. The house coffee wasn't great as it wasn't flavorful and there was not enough cream given and no sugar was provided on the side so we gave it a 4/10. The chocolate chip cookie was good but we didn't expect it to have sea salt on it but it was tasty so we gave it a 7/10. The mains came out and we got the veggie grain bowl and the breakfast sandwich. We were very underwhelmed by both dishes as the veggie grain bowl had no flavor even though we added pork to it. The pork was way too dry and the hummus left a weird taste in our mouths so we gave it a 2/10. The breakfast sandwich on the other hand was also a bit underwhelming as I was expecting more from it but it was literally just an egg, cheese, and lettuce in two pieces of bread. It just wasn't as flavorful as I expected and I could make this at home. We gave this a 6/10. Overall, the ambiance and food of this place was very mid and we were very disappointed with the hidden fees on the bill as well as the lack of flavor in the food. Absolutely loved the woodsy interior because it felt homey and intimate. We ordered the Dutch pancake with ricotta, smashed potatoes, and smoked trout toast. The pancake was fluffy and airy, but it wasn't a huge wow for me. The smashed potatoes were really good though, and loaded with tons of flavor! The smoked trout toast was the most unexpected highlight of the meal. It looks unassuming at first, but it's packed with a lot of flavor and the toast is perfectly crisp. Would recommend to give it a try, but don't just go for the pancake. Service is pretty good and fast. Not sure if I'd come back for brunch again since their menu is pretty limited. read more

Brunch spot right at the edge of Sunset that gets pretty busy. I came for brunch on a Sunday brunch waited around 10 minutes for a seat inside. They take your order outside prior to being seated so the food comes out super quick once you get settled. The squash toast was good but nothing special.
