I've been looking for a place like this my whole life. Came in on a foggy summer Sunday, searching for a rarified full American breakfast at 4 PM. This place was exactly what I was looking for. Populated by a few locals and a couple regulars at the bar and booths, sipping on coffee and reading the newspaper, the atmosphere was perfect. I got the two eggs, scrambled with both sausage and bacon, as well as toast and hashbrowns and a single pancake as a side order. I wouldn't change anything. Everything was made fresh right in front of my eyes, the service was friendly, and the prices are totally reasonable for the quality and location. Some places are more than just a meal. Hamburger Haven is one of them. I was a regular when I lived in the Inner Richmond, and when it closed during the pandemic it felt like losing a piece of the neighborhood. When it reopened I made sure to visit. A true gem, and I'm glad it's back! Walk in and you'll immediately get it. The wood paneling, green vinyl stools, and warm pendant lights will take you straight back to the 70s, without the smoking. Not that I was alive back then, but from what I've seen in photos. You'll notice lots of seniors taking advantage of the senior discounts, blue collar folks grabbing a quick meal, and locals filling the booths. Sometimes you'll see the occasional regular at the counter reading the paper and sipping their coffee without a care in the world. The kind of crowd that makes a diner feel like a diner. If you want that experience without ending up at a Mel's, this is the place. My go-tos are the French Toast Breakfast and the California Omelette. The French Toast comes with two eggs and your choice of bacon or sausage. I get both, because life's too short to just pick one. The California Omelette is bacon, avocado, tomatoes and jack cheese. Both will leave you satisfied. At $18.95 for the French Toast and $19.95 for the California Omelette, yes the prices have gone up over the years, but I'd rather support local. If you can make it on a weekday before 11am, the breakfast special is $13.99. Can't complain at that unbeatable price. And if you look closely at the walls, you'll find framed photos of Robin Williams with the owner. He was a regular here too. RIP Robin. That alone tells you everything about this place. As a resident of Clement St, I was eager to try Hamburger Haven as I rarely come across old-school diner places, which really hit the nostalgia and remind me of great childhood memories. I came with my parents on a Monday morning, so the restaurant was relatively quiet when we arrived. My mom ordered the french toast breakfast, my dad got the country Irish breakfast, and I got the garden omelet. My mom really enjoyed the French toast breakfast, although the French toast was a little more loaded with butter than she preferred (but she was able to wipe off excess butter). My dad also really liked the Irish breakfast, and especially enjoyed the Irish bacon and sausage. I really enjoyed the garden omelet, which had a healthy portion of bell peppers, mushrooms, onions, and avocado. They were super attentive with service and coming by with coffee refills, which was also a nice plus. After window shopping down Clement Street my friend and I were starving and lo and behold we looked up and we were right in front of Hamburger Haven and it was Open ( usually closes at 2p). We made it just in time! I immediately ordered the Mushroom burger with Swiss cheese and a large glass of ice tea. Our server took our order and even though it was just about 2p she was cordial and never rushed us at all. Great service. My burger came just the way I ordered it. This burger was huge and also delicious, moist and so favorable. The French fries were just made and were crispy and hot. This place has never disappointed in service, food and I also want to point out, cleanliness. A plus for me. I was craving a small diner experience. I looked up "diner", saw a few were closed on a Monday morning, but saw this one. It was the inside pictures of the green chairs, small booths, and wood panels that got me. The spot was cozy, warm, and had no odors or anything out of the ordinary-- clean, too! I like spots like this that have the grills right out in the open. While I can imagine as staff it's hard because of lack of privacy, but as a customer it's nice to see the clean utensils, how it's being cooked, and also to get to see the staff themselves. I always like how humbling it is to remember the actual people who cook your food-- like one of these much older gentleman, who probably has grandkids. When we see the people, we feel better about something like tipping well-- look and see who you're few extra dollars will go to and don't be a cheap ass. :) ok, ted talk over. It was relatively slow paced inside, and the waitress was polite, I decided on the country style breakfast ( see pic). The plate came out quite quick. The gravy actually didn't seem old or anything lol but nothing fancy for sure-- you can expect the staple. The sausages were sweet and the bacon nice and crispy, pretty big too. I feel the price was a little high, but hey, it's SF. I feel like I can't accurately assess a diner without trying their pancakes, so, I'll have to come back. The total was 26.56 for the plate and the coffee. Again, a little pricey I think. But I'm ignorant to the realities of shifting demands on tenants in various SF neighborhoods. We came in on a rainy day about 2:15 and I had no idea they closed at 2:30pm but the waitress was very friendly and let us come in, sit down and order. Menu had lots of great options, I went for the California burger and went it came out it looked perfect avocado was fresh and sliced thinly, bacon was crispy and the burger was so juicy. The food is American thé atmosphère is fairly quiet and it's really a good bargain but don't tell. The service is acceptable no problem . I been coming here a long time since high school and glad it's still around. It's a slight bit more reasonable than a lot of other places but minus the atmosphere. I guess you have to pay for that. I came in here last week for a xrare patty melt only kind I will do. If the restaurant can't accommodate this I have to walk. So I have my short list of places in case the mood strikes . Really love cute homey diners so decided to give Hamburger Haven a try on a Sunday around 1pm. There were a decent amount of people already there, but luckily they have lots of seating available! We ordered the salmon Benedict, sub home potatoes with french fries and the California omelette with hash browns. It was a pleasant surprise that the food was ready within 10 minutes. Omlette and hash browns were yummy -- very generous with the avocado. Salmon benedict was fine, tasted like what you would expect -- eggs were cooked perfectly and the hollandaise sauce was good. The english muffin was pretty soggy and the fries lacked some flavor/seasoning. With all that said, I would totally come back and try their other dishes! Glad to see Hamburger Haven open again! Have many childhood memories of eating lunch with my mother many years ago. My sister and I went there and got counter seats as it was pretty busy. It was fine as we were at the seats next to the front door so we didn't have to worry about people walking behind us. We got a good amount of food - breakfast. If we didn't have other errands to run, we would have lingered longer in this classic diner over extra cups of coffee, which we were offered, while 80s hits were playing softly in the background. We sat in one of the cute two person booths that line the window side of restaurant, opposite the counter seats, which we will have to try next time we dine in. I love a good counter seat in front of the cooking area. There were other patrons dining in, a few regulars judging by how they addressed the staff and servers as they came and went. Service was friendly and attentive, the food, delicious. I'm a fan of gravy (with or without biscuits) and theirs is yum, with a hint of sweetness. Old school diner - hours are weird esp for weekdays. 7am - 3pm? Service was quick and looks like everyone in there was locals. They have a happy hour deal on the weekends $20 for a burger beer and fries from 3pm to 9pm? The jalapeño burger was one of the most satiating bites I've had in a long time. I was craving a burger and not only did it fulfill the craving - I've been wanting to go back to try so many more. The burgers are expensive - after tax and tip it came out to be about $25 (with a $2 additional charge from the onion ring swap) but still super expensive in my opinion! Patty melt - 5/5, juicy delicious patty sandwiched by two perfectly browned slices of bread. Comes with some pickles, a tomato, a lettuce leaf, and fries. Yum! Fries were decent. Tuna melt - 5/5, lots of tuna sandwiched by beautiful bread. Comes with pickles and fries. Super thick and flavorful, definitely on the heavier side but worth it. Salmon benedict - 3/5, typical benedict with smoked salmon. Alright Spinach omelet - 3.5/5, delicious combo of mushroom, spinach and cheese paired with potatoes. In the interest of being entirely transparent, I should note that I have a pretty strong bias for Hamburger Haven. Their breakfast options and burgers may not by my favorite, let alone the best in SF, but my affinity for this place goes beyond just the food. Although the neighborhood around them has changed quite a bit in the 55+ years they've been open, so much about Hamburger Haven has stayed the same (in the best of ways). While I get why folks describe this as a greasy spoon sort of spot, I think of them more as a throwback - a traditional diner without a lot of frills. They've got a bunch of counter seats, with handful of small, two person booths and some tables in the back, and their menu is more comfort than trendy. They've got your classic eggs and bacon/sausage plates, omelets, pancakes, French Toast, pancakes, and benedicts along with a variety of burgers, sandwiches, and salads. Simple, but no less appealing! -- IRISH BREAKFAST - Imported Irish Bacon and Sausage, Two Eggs, Hash Browns (or Country Potatoes), and Choice of Toast (English Muffin)...$18.95 This isn't my typical, go-to order, but it's not often I see Irish breakfast offered! The Irish bacon was great and the sausage was moist, though I like American sausages better. Every time I've been here over the years, I've always been greeted with a friendly hello and the staff is always warm and welcoming. What's more, they get dishes out relatively quick, which you can watch thanks to their open kitchen. The one thing that is unfortunate is that Hamburger Haven hasn't been immune to having to raise their prices over the years. This was such a cute, old timey breakfast diner. I love it when you eat somewhere smaller and you overhear regulars talking with the servers about how their kids are doing because they've been coming here for so long. The booths were comfortable, and it was nice that they had some that perfectly sat just 2 people. I had a California BLT sandwich and my boyfriend ordered a mushroom omelet. I thought the food was just normal, and having one large lettuce leaf and couple of tomato and pickle slices on the side seemed a bit odd to me since I'm not eating a burger. I'm a sucker for local homey town diners. I should try other things here but I feel like I got the old soul of if it ain't broke, don't fix it! I usually get the french toast breakfast or pancake breakfast. French toast is very eggy which is fantastic. Pancake is a normal pancake nothing too big or crazy. What can be appreciated is the speed of which we were sat. My wife, her family and I all came in to dine here and we were sat within 5 minutes. It is a quaint breakfast spot so I was excited to have found a new place to bring visitors. Unfortunately, we were not greeted until 15 minutes of us being seated. And the service stayed consistant throughout. The food was good.. typical of a classic diner. However, the speed of which we were checked on and given our bill was not ideal and we ended up being late for our later activities during the day.
