I'm just not a Marina person. I don't wear designer athletic-leisure outfits or hang out with my frat bros all these years later. That's why you rarely see me lurking about on Chestnut St. However, here I was looking for a bite to eat before heading home to the tenements. I had heard of this spot because I heard the double smashburger was pretty tasty. There were a lot of people out on the patio but not a single diner inside. Guess where I sat. Not in a burger mood, I first went with an indulgent treat, the $11 Brioche French Toast Bites, five of them dusted with powdered sugar and accompanied by maple syrup (Photo 8). Quite tasty and gone in seconds. I followed this up with a surprisingly healthy choice, the $18 Dirty Girl Castelfranco Salad, an exceptional mix of sugar snap peas, sunchokes, cara cara, and sunflower seeds tossed in citrus vinaigrette (Photo 9). Did I turn into a Marina man? Uh, not quite. The Marina/cow hollow area in SF, gives off small college town vibes! The streets are lined with a variety of different restaurants, shops, and so many places to explore. Causwells is one of the restaurants definitely worth exploring. First off, everyone on staff is so incredibly kind, generous, and welcoming, you'll never want to leave. There is a small bar area immediately to your left when you walk into this intimate feeling Restaurant. The bartender makes you feel like you're walking into chairs. Yes he's busy, but he acknowledges customers walking in. Very cool! We were immediately seated, and while the tables are on the smaller side and fairly close to one another, it's still created a very cozy experience. They have a nice menu that with a variety of items. The people seated next to us were enjoying the salmon and it looked absolutely delicious. We went for the burgers, because it's one of their must try items on the menu. It's a Smashburger with gooey cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and this delicious deliciously soft tasty bun. Diners tip: the burger comes with onions, and we both asked for them to be grilled. This is definitely the way to go. The burger is very generous in size, snd delicious. Perfectly seasoned, well-made, and it is that taste sensation that we all crave when eating a burger. The fries were tasty and lightly seasoned, and if you can get through the entire burger and the fries, you get a gold star. I did my usual two bites and I was done and yes, I took the rest home with me. This is a great restaurant and definitely should be on your list of places to try!
I've been wanting to try this spot for awhile. Street parking was hard at first but ended up finding parking across the street. The restaurant is nice and clean. The staff is attentive and friendly. I had many questions about the menu and our server was very kind. In my opinion and my palate the food was ok. The appetizer 100 layer was very greasy flavor was ok. The bread was delicious but dips had no flavor. My chicken burger was good. My husband said his cheeseburger was ok. The best thing was the margarita.
We visited Causwells on a Sunday afternoon and got seated outdoors right away. They were serving brunch, for which the menu was relatively small. I wanted to order the N/A Aperitif Spritz, but just couldn't justify it for $17, so I ended up sticking with water. The cocktail list did look amazing though. For food, I ordered the Housemade Ricotta and Smoked Salmon Sliders. The Ricotta was tasty and I liked the subtle rosemary honey flavor. This item is definitely meant to be shared, but I was starving. The Smoked Salmon Sliders were tiny, but pretty good, especially they homemade pretzel buns. My partner and his family enjoyed their food as well, including the Causwells Breakfast, Cochinita Hash, and Breakfast Burrito. Overall, I've had better brunches in SF, but would return to the famous burger.
Made a reservation and came here with my sister when they had all of the holiday festive drinks! We showed up early and ended up grabbing a seat at the bar instead of sitting down at a table. The bartenders were fabulous and the drinks are very well crafted. The cocktail menu is extensive and I look forward to trying some of their regular non-holiday drinks. The food was great, we got the famous ricotta to start and then the burger and fries. Both items were great and the burger is very solid. Overall, my sister and I had a fabulous time and we look forward to coming back. I definitely recommend sitting at the bar- the bartenders are fabulous and you get to watch them make gorgeous cocktails!
Amazing, amazing, amazing. I was told about Causwell's when I first came up to San Francisco. Was told that it was a great place for burgers and really good food. I'll be honest, I didn't visit for a few months as I was busy checking out some of the other restaurants in the area. One day I had a real urge for a great cheeseburger. When I went there to order my cheeseburger, I saw it had American cheese, which I'm not a fan of. They had to explain to me that their American cheese was real American cheese, not fake kraft American cheese. I took a chance. I'm so glad I did. Smash burger style. The burger came with all the juices you'd want, and the cheese was fantastic. Fast forward to a sunny weekend as I was walking by and I noticed they're open for brunch. That's when I found out about Ivan's Chiliques. Complete with chorizo and avocado. Amazing! It's my go-to brunch, and my go-to dish, especially on sunny days where you can sit outside and bask in the sun here in San Francisco in the Marina. Whether you're here for a weekend morning brunch or for a weekday evening burger and beer, (or any of the other amazing dishes), Causwell's is a no-brainer five-star local restaurant. Enjoy!
This place is great for brunch! The menu is full of hearty options with semi-creative takes on comfort food. I'm a big fan of the banana bread grilled cheese and the biscuits and gravy. Everything is filling and feels thoughtfully done without being overly fussy. They have one of my favorite cheeseburgers in the city as well. The Americana burger is a go to every time and it never disappoints. Huge, simple, and done really well, it's the kind of burger you think about long after you've finished it. The drinks are just as memorable as the food. The espresso martini is fabulous with a subtle hint of banana that makes it unique. Their holiday cocktails around Christmastime are really nice too. As with everywhere in this area, I'd recommend making reservations ahead of time and try not to deal with parking at all if you can avoid it. The interior is on the smaller side and can get pretty loud, so sitting outside in the parklet is ideal if the weather allows. Great place for brunch on a sunny day.
We came a little after opening on a Saturday, and the place was already starting to fill up but we were seated quickly. I ordered the Americana burger with fries, and my husband got the brunch burger. Both were solid, high-quality burgers that were juicy and fresh. The fries were great too. Our friends ordered similarly, but one of them got the crispy onions as a side... and wow, they were delicious. I was honestly a little jealous and wish I had ordered those! (Mental note for next time I come) We all ordered cocktails and really enjoyed them. I had the espresso martini, which is on the San Francisco Chronicle's list of "Best Martinis in SF," and I completely agree! The inside of Causwells is super cute and cozy, making it a great spot to relax and enjoy a meal. Definitely a place we'd come back to!
I don't normally eat fried chicken but when I do I want it to taste like their fried chicken sandwich. Not only was it juicy (not in the least bit dry) but very tasty. The 100 layer potato was crispy and oh wee was it so good. Washed it down with the best martini in SF - New Espresso Martini. This was fantastic! Service was as good as the food. This place is a keeper.
Came to Causwells on a Sunday afternoon in the Marina and was able to snag a cute table outside! I've heard a lot about this spot and it definitely did not disappoint. Food: Deviled Eggs (4/5): Pretty standard deviled egg... good, but nothing too crazy. Ricotta (4/5): Yummy and well balanced. The rosemary honey on top was a really nice touch. Americana Burger (5/5): GET. THE. BURGER. I totally see why people say it's one of the best burgers in SF. Super juicy, flavorful, and that special sauce!? Would come back for the burger!
11 years later, I came back for the brunch burger today and it didn't let me down. Stopped in for brunch on a Friday afternoon about an hour or two after they opened and got a seat immediately by the window. The staff was awesome - friendly and attentive. Their cocktail menu leaned more gin and or notes-I-don't-love, but I got the Tropicana at the servers recommendation and it was delicious. My meal came out in less than 10 minutes, hot and fresh. The burger hit the spot and was everything I remembered it to be. The vibes were great, and I was glad I decided to sit inside because the music was jammin (but not too loud). Not 5 stars only because the prices are a bit steep ($18+ cocktails, $20 burger), but if you got it or want to treat yourself, it's a great spot.
Great meal, excellent service, and good vibes. The arugula salad was fresh, and the causwells ricotta was fantastic. You could spread that ricotta on basically anything and have it taste good. And then, the star of the show, the Americana burger. Is this the best burger I have ever had? No, but I can tell where the hype is. The sesame bun is fluffy and slightly toasted; the burger is incredibly juicy; and the fries are perfectly crispy. I will definitely come back to Causwells.
Came to Causwells and really enjoyed the experience! We sat at the bar for brunch so we got a front row seat to all the festive drinks that people ordered and let me tell you, that Grinch cocktail? Delicious! It was floral, with just a touch of acidity, and I was also impressed that the pandan flavor came through. The pumpkin pie slush was a little harder to pull the nuances depending on its state but I did get the hints of apple and the miso soy milk in the beginning when it was more frozen and then when it started to melt, the roasted pumpkin was very evident. For brunch, we shared a few dishes including the smoked salmon sliders, the cochinita hash, and the butter seared banana bread. Everything was really good! For the sliders, it was the perfect ratio of bun to salmon to crème fraiche. I especially liked the chewiness of the mini homemade pretzel buns and the bite of acidity from the pickled onion. For the hash, I liked that the elements were still a good size making each bite nice and hearty. The egg was more jammy than runny, but it was still very good. The house hot sauce was also really nice! It was sweet upfront but had that nice lingering heat in the back. Last but not least, the banana bread. Yum! The whipped butter was excellent and gave a nice salty creamy contrast to the caramelized banana flavor from the fluffy loaf. This would be an instant repeat if we come back for brunch! The staff highly recommended we come back for dinner if we enjoyed brunch and I think we'll definitely consider the option. While it was a bit ironic that our drinks cost more than our entrees, they were done exceptionally well so it was worth it in my opinion. I recommend a visit if you come to the Marina!
Whilst I liked the vibes at Causewells I was pretty disappointed by the service here. Especially considering the price I was expecting more. I wouldn't come back just based on my experience with that. The food and drinks were good but pricey. The burger was yummy and I actually liked the onion strings but this was not consistent across our table. The cocktails were fun and well thought out. read more

Made a reservation for my group, when we checked in we were seated promptly. We came during the holiday season to grab some dinner and check out their holiday drinks menu! Everyone got a different drink, I tried the Christmas Morning drink and it was super cute and unique! The presentation of their drinks is amazing, with holiday inspired cups as well as unique presentation of ingredients within the drink. Mine had ice shaped like a Christmas tree and ornaments. For shareable we ordered: - 100 layer crispy potatoes - super crispy, a little too salty -Brussels sprouts - this was delicious, the Brussels sprouts weren't cooked too mushy or crunchy, it was just right, the seasonings balanced out with the cranberries that were topped on it - pull apart bread - super fluffy and the dips were delicious I had to try their Americana burger - the burger was huge! Did not expect double patty, the bun was light and fluffy, and overall a pretty solid burger. I felt like it could've used a bit more sauce or seasoning on the patties, the whole burger tasted a bit too meaty. A very heavy meal. Parking is also a bit hard in this area, my group circled around for 30 minutes. read more
6% surcharge. I stopped in for a very quick espresso martini at the bar. Fast service and good ambiance. - 3/5: The New Espresso Martini $18 is very ordinary; I would say it's average. I could barely detect the roasted banana. It's topped with smoked coconut foam, which is also very lightly flavored. read more

This is such a cute restaurant. I went here with a group of 4 for some pre-dinner drinks and apps. We were adventurous with our drink selection: -Succotash: weird but in an expected way. The menu is very clear about what you're in for. - Lavender Sgroppino: basically a fancy alcoholic frozen lemonade, everything I wanted it to be! - Irish Coffee and Parmesan: this was... interesting. The base drink, basically a frozen espresso martini, was good, but the topper cheese was SOOO salty. If that's your vibe, try it! We switched out for a brut, which was lovely. The apps were excellent! We got the smoked salmon sliders and the 100 layer, both of which were well-designed and very tasty. Our waiter was excellent. Super attentive without being invasive, very fast service. And the vibe of the place is so cute. Will DEFINITELY be coming back for the full dinner! read more

First time at Causwells, and it was really good! Came here for lunch with some friends a week before Christmas, and they were all decorated for the holidays. I appreciated that the menu offered a bunch of festive options, some super silly ones, and many that sounded really good. I ended up getting the Brunch Burger with a fried egg, fries, and an Ube Eggnog. We also split biscuits and gravy for the table. The biscuits and gravy were delicious. The gravy was very savory, and I liked that the biscuits had a decent crunch on the bottom but were still a bit pillowy. The Ube Eggnog was solid. The mug ruled. It was very tasty. The Brunch Burger was fantastic. The sesame bun was well-toasted, the burger was perfectly seasoned and juicy without being a pile of grease. I wish the egg had been over easy--the one I got was pretty hard-fried--but it was still very good. Oh, and the fries? Fantastic. Well salted and crispy. My friend got onion strings as his side, and... they're exactly as advertised! Very thinly sliced onions that were fried and well seasoned, almost like a bloomin' onion. Overall, I really enjoyed my meal here. It was pretty chill for a weekend lunch. I'd go back for sure. read more

Came by for cocktails, as I think Causwells is one of the most slept on spots for drinks. Super high level of attention to every drink with unique ingredients combinations. Drink menu also rotates seasonally so there's always something new. - New espresso martini - obsessed with the coconut foam that this drink is topped with, that also pairs really nicely with roasted banana notes in the drink - green mango martini - this is my kind of martini. It's tequila based with griffard mango, green mango juice, sherry, cucumber skin, and chili oil. Lightly spirit forward with refreshing sweet notes balanced by the spicy circles of chili oil. Like a tropical martini. - ended up with some light bites too including classic well made deviled eggs and house made ricotta which is delicious. Love the seasoning on the crackers Staff is so friendly and the vibes are on point. It's casual but professional. Indoor seating, bar seating, and plenty of parklet seating. read more
I stopped by Causwells with some friends for a last-minute weekend brunch. They were pretty busy but were able to fit us in for a table outside within a few minutes! The service here was very good and attentive, besides us being seated outside at a very busy time for service. We went with the breakfast burrito and brunch burger. Both got the job done, but were nothing special. If you're hungry & in the area you can't go wrong with Causwells. read more
I enjoyed the food here but it wasn't amazing or all that unique. In fact the menu is much like many new American menus we see out there these days. The dish i loved most was surprisingly the cesar salad. Somehow it tasted a bit different than others in a great way. It's a good neighborhood spot but I wouldn't highly recommend trying or going out of your way. Service was great, fast and it had a casual ambiance that was slightly elevated with some fun pops of color. The food was ok to me so over all 3.9/5 read more
Excellent people-watching seating outside in a well covered parklet. We stopped by just before 5pm on a Tuesday and were easily seated. Empty inside, but patio seating filled in. Have a small happy hour 3-5pm. Pros: - Food is decent. Burger was a strong 4/5 (though i asked for my onions grilled, and they were sadly raw and difficult to pull off). Salad with sunchokes and citrus was a nice bit of roughage, nice bitterness in the lettuces. - Banana bread 'grilled cheese' is an epiphany. Must try. - Cocktails were fun & IGworthy. - Vibes & location feel so perfect on a sunny afternoon. Cons: - 1 bathroom stall, can only imagine how rough this gets when during a busy dinner service. - Service was friendly, but often multiple asks for the same item, and long waits between check ins. Overall, a decent spot in an area flush with choice. Probably more of a 3.5 than a 4, but well round up here! read more
My husband and I decided to stop by for dinner since his coworker recommended this restaurant. We also saw that they were on inKind which made it even better. We arrived at 6:30pm on a Sunday without a reservation, and we were lucky enough to snag a table in the parklet. It was very busy both inside and outside. I ordered the handmade penne pasta and it was flavorful. I really liked the combination of the pork belly, pesto, cherry tomatoes, and the pasta. I'd prefer if it was a bit less salty and oily. My husband ordered the Americana burger and it came with a double patty. The sauce combined well with the burger. I was surprised that the fries didn't come with the burger, so it was an extra $3. It was good but would've been better if they were a little crispier. Overall, we enjoyed the ambiance and food. It's great to be able to sit outside, especially when the weather is nice. So I know that they're known for the burgers. (Delicious by the way) But we decided to go a little bit earlier. Around 12pm where at this time they had a brunch menu. We went with a couple different options. The brunch was fairly priced. Caesar salad was $18 add chicken for an additional $7. The smoked salmon sliders were $14 and the deviled eggs were $11. They have a cocktail menu in theme of Girl Scout cookies. Each cocktail was $18. Overall it was pleasant. Our server was very kind and attentive. The restaurant wasn't over packed with people so you'll be able to have a conversation without having to talk over the table next to you. Try out the brunch. While in the Presidio over the weekend for a kiddo birthday, we decided to do a nice walk through the Marina after on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon. We've been wanting to try Causwells for quite some time after hearing about it from SF friends. Brunch was settled! We arrived shortly after opening and were seated outside, perfect for taking in the Sunday sun and people watching. I ordered a Mango Colada (frozen cocktail) and for bites we did two Americana Burgers (these are double patties fyi!), a Market Caesar to split, and pasta with butter and cheese for the kiddo. The brunch menu had a few fun items like Butter Seared Banana Bread with whipped butter, Brioche French Toast Bites, Smoked Salmon Sliders, and I noticed for dessert a Banana Bread 'Grilled Cheese' with mascarpone...would love to come back and try! Overall I thought the meal was solid. I love a city brunch and understand what it may do to my wallet after, but it's always about the whole experience for me. I loved the creative menu, vibrant cocktail list, fun staff, and would def enjoy to come back and try more items from the menu maybe for dinner. Overall, delicious cocktail, solid burger/fries and Caesar. We parked up the street from the Presidio and did a nice stroll, parking seems to be a bit tough closer to restaurant on Chestnut. Celebrated a Galentines dinner here! Our server was awesome the entire time. We shared a few things: the shrimp ceviche, poke, pull apart bread with dip, and the Americana burger. The standouts for me were the Americana burger and shrimp ceviche. The burger was so juicy, probably some of the best I've had at a restraunt tbh. The shrimp ceviche was delicious and refreshing, came with big pieces of shrimp, chili, and good amount of lime. I would definitely come back for those. As for drinks, my friend got an espresso martini which she mentioned was too strong for her liking. She expected it to be more balanced with the coffee. I got the Tropicana, which was a Mandarin-infused tequila, aperol, and carbonated citrus. I'd give that a 7.5/10. read more

Really great service and vibes inside, but food fell a little flat for me especially for the high prices. Although I didn't try the famous burger -- so maybe I need to come back for that. We got the octopus app and I got the handmade bigoli pasta entree -- both were fine but not outstanding. I didn't love how greasy the pasta was and the octopus was a bit too spicy for me. The cocktail I got (black pearl) was also unfortunately mostly ice and not worth the high price, although it did taste very sweet, which I liked. We did get the banana bread grilled cheese for dessert which was the best thing I ate that night! Super delicious, warm, and comforting. Highly recommend saving room for that at the end of your meal. read more
Came here for the burger and thought it was really good. That being said it's a $22 burger which is a bit steep even in the city. We also got a half bottle of wine (nice that they do that!) and enjoyed it. Service was ok and we thought the inside was nice. We went on a Friday afternoon and got seated immediately but could tell it was getting busy quickly. I came because I've been hearing amazing things about their double patty burger so had to give it a try (their Americana burger). We also ordered a banana grilled cheese to see what kind of dessert would appear. Starting with the burger - this is a pretty basic burger. Not understanding the hype surrounding it honestly. It's a standard good smash burger but I wouldn't go as far as picking this over an in n out burger or even raving about it to anyone. THE BANANA GRILLED CHEESE is what I would tell everyone about though! It's absolutely delicious, the banana flavor in the cream, and the chocolate sauce they bring as a dipping. For any fellow Latinas, I have to tell you that they bring you abuelita hot chocolate in a shallow dish and wow it's so good. Dip the banana grilled cheese in it and you'll be in heaven. Such a perfect dessert that's not too sweet and would recommend to anyone. read more

Wanted a burger and this one reportedly makes good ones. Arrived on Sunday at around 1pm and we were seated at one of the outside tables. I love banana bread and had to give theirs a try. Served hot and it was moist. Good but maybe a bit pricey. Hubs ordered the chicken sandwich with fries - he said the chicken was moist, crispy, and had good flavor. Kiddo ordered the Americana burger and I went with the brunch burger. Buns were pillowy soft and they were both good burgers. Service was attentive in that he checked on us often. read more

Came on a busy Saturday night after receiving raving reviews from friends. I came with a party of 4, had reservations and was seating promptly and quickly. The good: -great service -lovely ambiance -delicious and creative cocktails -for month of march and April they have special girls scout inspired cocktails. Delicious. Also loved the filthy martini. The not so great: -food was mediocre. We tried the famous Americana burger, and honestly--it was underwhelming. I felt it lacked flavor and didn't see what was so special. Super duper and in-n-out definitely outranks this, but that's just my opinion. -we sub the side salad with fries. Was it worth the extra $3? No. Absolutely not. -Cesar salad with grilled chicken, an extra $7: too much dressing in the salad. Wilted lettuce. Chicken was dry. Need I say more? -devils egg: comes with 3 halves, good flavor, perfect little bite. Wish it came with more pieces though. -Brussels sprout: tasty and paired well with the feta cheese. Overall, great location to have a drink and catch with friends. The drinks were amazing, but food was just okay. read more
