This is a really wonderful sandwich spot that I have come to love for their kind accommodation to customization- be it adding weird, hot stuff (the Tajin spice and ghost pepper sauce really add to the sandwich)- or holding the typical stuff (I'm allergic to onions and really hate most lettuce). The sandwiches are creative and well balanced. There is always a harmonious balance of ingredients. The Ms. Spicy is wonderful, as the Tajin spice is unique and adds to the flavor. The sandwich was extremely fresh and flavorful but the star was the Dutch crunch bread. I ordered "The Giant" on Uber Eats on a Sunday afternoon around 12:40 p.m. and the wait for the sandwich was an estimated 45 minutes. Oftentimes the estimate in the app is not particularly accurate, so I went ahead and placed my order, expecting that it would be ready in 10 minutes or so. When I arrived at Irving Subs for pick-up, I immediately realized I should have trusted the estimate provided in app: there were cars doubled parked everywhere next to the restaurant, as well as a crowd of people waiting on the sidewalk for their sandwiches. Ultimately, the sandwich took exactly one hour to prepare. To be blunt, if you're in a rush, I would absolutely go elsewhere or order far, far, far in advance. "The Giant" sandwich I ordered included turkey, cheddar, thick cut bacon, and avocado on top of the standard toppings of lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, pickles, pepperoncinis, salt & pepper, house vinaigrette, mustard and mayo. Although the sub is not the longest and largest sub out there, it is stacked generously. Unlike pastrami spots that often create unbalanced monstrosities that are only stacked with meats and nothing else, the sandwich I had was perfectly balanced. Across the board, the ingredients were fresh and high quality: I loved the freshness of the Dutch crunch roll -- honestly one of the best I've had in recent memory, the creamy avocado had nice chunks in it for added texture, the crispy bacon was not-oily, and the pepperoncinis rounded out the sandwich with a nice brininess and spice. I loves me pretty much anything on a fresh Dutch crunch roll, and they definitely provide a number of options at this modest sammie shop in the Inner Sunset. But sometimes I have those days when I pinch my gut and feel the need to curb my carb intake. No problem here as they have a tortilla wrap option. I must've been feeling real guilty because I ordered the $9.95 Loaded Veggie in a Tortilla Wrap. It was generously stuffed with avocado slices, shredded lettuce, cucumber slices, peperoncini, and roasted red peppers. Their house vinaigrette and garlicky mayo actually made it surprisingly satisfying for a self-induced mandate of guilt reduction (Photo 9). I was going to walk over to Golden Gate Park and find a random bench to devour my veggie sandwich. However, it turned out they have a dining room two doors down from the shop. It was well stocked with a big screen TV for sports viewing, a variety of toys for the kiddies, and a restroom. How convenient, and they make the space available as a private event rental. One of my favorite sandwich spots in the city! I'm so glad I live close to an Irving Subs because this place has become a staple in my take-out rotation. The best part is that they are very vegan and vegetarian friendly! They have an entire dedicated vegan section (not vegetarian only and vegans have to make modification or omit ingredients). For vegans, they offer tofu, vegan bacon, and vegan Tindle chicken as their protein options! They even have a separate vegan cheese and vegan garlicky mayo, so you don't have to worry about a dry sandwich. My favorite is the Plant-Based Club: Vegan chicken, bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato, and onion on Dutch Crunch bread. So good and filling and protein packed! They also have a vegan cheesy bbq chicken sandwich and a soy spicy sandwich which uses their 5-spice tofu. This place gets super busy on weekends, so definitely order ahead and expect a 30-minute wait to pick them up. If you want to dine in, they have a cute dining room that's only 2 doors down, about 15 feet away. There are tables and chairs, plus a ping-pong table and board games. Oh, and that is how much onion I got too. Also notice the bottom of the sandwich, the dry bread? They don't put mayo on both sides. Just dry meat on dry bread. Unreal. Who does that? Also, you can tell they are Asian owned by the health department score. They get bad scores, fix it, but then go right back to being filthy. The clean standard is not maintained. One month 6 violation, follow up zero. Next inspection 6 violations, follow up zero. They keep clean while being watched, then go right back to donig whatever they want. Good sandwiches, but slow service. I placed a pickup order via DoorDash for a chicken melt. When browsing on DoorDash, it originally said 18 minutes for pickup when I was browsing, though that changed to 25 minutes after placing the order. That was no big deal, but when I arrived at the store a few minutes after the estimated pickup time, they said it would be another 5 minutes. After another 5 minutes, I checked in again, but they said they were still working on it. I ended up waiting another 10 minutes, which meant it took almost 50 minutes from the time I placed my order until my sandwich was ready for pickup, which seems like a long time. I should also mention that I placed my order around 1:10 PM on a weekday, which I thought would be after the main lunch rush. I want to cut them some slack given that they are a small operation and they also appeared to be filling a catering order, but I wish they quoted more accurate wait times. The sandwich itself was good - generous portion size and packed with fillings. I wish the cheese was slightly more melted, but that's a personal preference. The sandwiches are a pretty good value for the money (especially with a discount DoorDash was offering on certain sandwiches), but I'm not sure if I would wait this long again. read more

The best westside sandwich shop, maybe even best citywide. They have a new dining room next door at 1046 that is fantastic for families with small children. I rented it out for a birthday and it was perfect - enclosed childproof area with toys for kids to play with. This was a perfect find and I will be renting out the space again. I always forget to take a picture but just went back to Irving subs for the second time! This is my favorite sandwich shop in SF by far. I got The Giants sandwich on sourdough the first time and Dutch crunch the second time (big fan of Dutch crunch now!). Service is great but because it's so popular, I recommend ordering online 30 min before you plan on picking it up. You can also order in person at their kiosk outside but be ready for a wait. It's a small shop with not much space to eat inside but I think they just opened up a seating area with games next door for you to enjoy your sandwich!
