I had to revisit Sandy's after they made the chronicle's top 100 list. I had been before and tried the meat Muffeleta and a brown butter cookie. Both were exceptional. Today I did the side by side comparison of the mushroom and the meat. They are both amazing . The bread is fluffy and crispy. Make sure to get it toasted. Both pack a punch with flavor. If I had to pick one I would get the meat version l. It's more balanced and well what I know to be Muffeleta. I don't super love mushrooms as well so that's just a personal preference. I got the deal with chips and slaw. Chips are classic you know them you love them. Lots of flavors to choose. I got zapp's a vinegar flavored chip. The slaw has a ton of dill flavor. I do love dill but it might just be too much for me. I love this spot for a park hang. Can grab sandwiches and head to golden gate park. There are options for serving 8-10 people. So great to pick up for an event! It's also nice to be able to accommodate vegetarians without them getting a less substantial version. The 1/8th of a slice is plenty big. I don't think you really need more than that.

I recently went back to Sandy's to give their egg salad and pimento cheese a try, and long story short, I'm a fan of both. While I didn't get selected for tickets to the PGA Masters Golf Tournament, that's not going to stop me from making pimento cheese sandwiches at home. Sandy's sells this in a cup, pint, and I believe a quart size. I got a cup ($9) of their pimento cheese, and paired it with milk bread at home, and it was so tasty. Great texture, slightly spicy, really solid pimento cheese. A cup was enough to make 3-4 sandwiches at home. Great staple to have for a quick lunch at home. Egg salad, I got the pint ($16), this was really solid too, although I added some additional salt and pepper to taste. The pint is great for family, easily can make 5-6 sandwiches with the amount of a pint. Honestly a cup order would've been good for me. Egg salad is one of those things I don't want to make myself, so thankfully Sandy's sells theirs lol If you are looking for an affordable way to make tasty sandwiches at home, and like egg salad and pimento cheese like me, definitely worth checking out to satisfy the craving. They have them packaged up for take home, so was able to get in and out in less than a couple minutes.
Yes it is salty. Could it be the olives? I got the mushroom muffaletta 1/8 and a small cup of pickle egg salad. Total $26. Yes, it is pricey. No lines, so it was quick. Toasting it was a great idea making the sandwich really crunchy. That bread is wonderful. The egg salad was good. Thinking of adding more eggs to it since there's too much mayo. My first muffaletta was in Miami at a Cuban deli. It was multi layer. This is one layer. This place was cute. Several small tables and stools near the window.
I went to Sandy's Muffulettas and didn't order a muffuletta. Blasphemous I know, but I was feeling sensitive about my recent carb intake and thought that much bread might put me in a coma. I've had the classic muffuletta at Central Grocery in N'awlins (Review: https://yelp.to/zRUJ6ScOgV) and remember how thick the crusty bread was to hold the layers of meat, cheese, and marinated olive salad. From the menu, it appeared like the muffuletta here kept the same spirit and added Duke's mayo to boot. I was tempted but set my sights instead on the $13 Pickled Egg Salad Sandy since I'm a sucker for egg salad. This was a particularly spiky version with garlic, celery, and chives, and it was quite tasty between two slices of sourdough deli bread. It was topped with a pile of Zapps potato chips which provided a nice added spicy crunch (Photo 6). I liked it a lot, and I believe it was Sandy himself that made my sandwich. The Roasted Mushroom Muffuletta and Pimento Cheese Sandy appear worthy for a return visit. Snagged a too good to go bag from Sandy's on a Saturday afternoon, drop came around 3pm with a pick up at 4pm. The surprise bag came with 1/8th of the roasted mushroom muffuletta and 1/8th of a classic muffuletta. Food: Roasted Mushroom Muffuletta - nice fluffy Italian bread that was focaccia like in texture - filled with slices of provolone, an olive spread and lots of diced roasted mushrooms, great combination of flavors and textures, very savory with a nice tang from the olive spread Classic Muffuletta - same great bread filled with thin slices of charcutier, as well as the provolone cheese and olive salad, really well balanced, the salty meat with the melty cream cheese and the savory briny olive salad. Service was great, we arrived a little early for pick up but they had it ready to go which was amazing, owner was on site and super warm and friendly and gave great directions to heat the sandwich slices at 350F wrapped for 10 minutes which is how you should eat it if you grab it to go for the best crisp on the outside soft melty inside. Overall really loved the muffulettas from Sandy's, a great spot for casual lunch and a different sandwich offering. A particularly good deal if you catch it on too good to go. Definitely worth a try if you are in the Haight or looking for a great sandwich.
I never had a muffuletta before this one so I don't have a reference point, but I thought this one was delicious! One slice (1/8) was quite filling for me--a bit heavy but delicious. We added on a side of the pickled egg salad, and the lady pointed out that we could make it a combo for the same price and get a bag of chips for free. So we also got a side of voodoo chips to munch on :D The egg salad was a bit sour/strong, so it may not be for everyone, but my friends and I quite liked it! It's a pretty small shop, and all the tables were taken (Sunday ~1 pm), but one became available while we were waiting for our food
At my old job, one of the things that my coworker and I would regularly get for lunch were muffuletta sandwiches from one of our go-to spots. For me, it was always just a tasty meal. For him, it was a (loose) reminder of where he used to live - New Orleans. However, while he thought it was pretty solid as well, he'd always tell me how it was nowhere near as good as the ones he used to get. At the very least, it wasn't a "New Orleans muffuletta". So, you can imagine how tickled my curiosity was when he texted me to let me know that he finally found one here at Sandy's! Inside, the restaurant is pretty modest, with just a handful of tables and a few counter seats available. However, almost as soon as I walked in, my tastebuds got so excited. Not only did it smell great inside, but my eyes immediately gravitated towards the muffulettas that they had laid out behind the display window. With just one look, I could already see the differences in what I was used to having - from the round Italian sesame bread (they cut it like a pizza) to the thick layer of olive spread they use. As for the non-muffuletta part of the menu, it's not very extensive, offering just a few other sandwiches, including a daily special, a muffuletta salad, and a handful of sides, but it also makes sense since most folks come here for one of their two signature muffulettas. -- MUFFULETTA - Italian Bread, Mortadella, Prosciutto, Salame, Provolone, Spicy Olive Spread, Duke's Mayo...$14.50 (1/8th Slice) This initially looked a bit small, but it was decently big once I unwrapped it. The salame, prosciutto, and provolone worked really well together, but the bread and the spread set this apart from the ones I've had before. In particular, the latter had a touch of heat and almost an overwhelming taste of olives to it. -- PICKLED EGG SALAD SANDY - Sourdough Deli Bread, Garlic, Celery and Chives, Stuffed, Topped with Zapp's Potato Chips...$14 I was just as excited to try this one and, thankfully, it didn't disappoint. While the bread did feel a bit dry, it wasn't terrible by any means. More importantly, though, the egg salad itself was delicious with a slight tartness and the Zapp's chips added a nice crunch (and they give you the rest of the bag!). Now, as a few of my fellow Yelpers have mentioned, Sandy's prices for their sandwiches is a bit higher than what some of the other sandwich shops in this part of SF charge, but I wouldn't go so far as to say they're overpriced. Given how this place is more unique than your average sandwich shop, along with the fact that they seemingly have one of the most, if not the most, authentic muffulettas you'll find in SF, it's not like you're paying for the exact same thing you'll find everywhere else. So, in that sense, even though I'd still prefer some of my regular spots, I certainly wouldn't have a problem coming back to splurge on something so different! Once in a while I crave a muffuletta and, of course, Sandy's is just the place to go. I really enjoyed the combo meal with the 1/4 muffuletta, 8oz herby slaw, and a bag of chips. Wonderful lunch! Bit on the heavier side but that's what you sign up for. The herby slaw was delicious, fresh, and has a balanced sweetness. They have parsley, chives, and dill mixed in there with a mustard dressing, and I found it to be superb with the sandwich. Staff were nice, and you order at the counter and bus your own table.
A very solid and unique sandwhich. Quality meats and nice cheese. The olive mixture is what really packs the flavor punch here and makes the sandwich unique. It's salty and rich which really flavors the whole sandwhich. If anything, it leans salty but it wasn't too much given the bread. The bread was very crisp, bordering too much as some bites scratched the roof of my mouth.
Stopped by here on a whim on a Sunday afternoon. The guy at the register was super nice and chatty, and the team got us our sandwhiches quick (they are made ahead of time, good for muffulettas to let all the juices soak in). We were lucky and got a seat inside from the few available. The sandwhiches were umami, zesty, and buttery! My partner's and my favorite was the roasted mushroom muffuletta. However, for 1/8 a slice they are pretty pricey for how little they are filled. In addition, none of the team was wearing gloves when handling ready to eat items, which is a food safety hazard.
I love their COOKIE! The muffuletta was good but I can't compare it to the real deal in NOLA. But I've come back for that freaking cookie!!!
Seems like they run out of the muffelatas pretty quick- both options were out when we arrived at about 3pm. There a couple of tables inside for seating and they offer eat in or take out (pay before eating) The sandwich was well filled and the service was quite fast. Within 5 minutes of ordering we received our sandwhich. It was the pickeled egg sandwich which I expected to have a funky pickled egg taste but it was really just an egg salad sandwich. Decent sandwich- not sure if it's worth the 16$ after tip.

Been wanting a muffuletta for awhile now, because I've never had one until today. Cute inviting store with some seats inside, I ordered a slice of mushroom muffuletta, toasted, to go. At home, I thoroughly enjoyed the chopped black olives (that's why it's salty), provolone, roasted diced mushrooms...yum! The crunchiness of the bread was the cherry on top. TLDR: these muffuletta's converted this olive hater (although still the only thing I will eat with olives in it) I HATE olives... but something about these muffuletta's has me hooked. I might even say the mushroom edges out the meat muffuletta ever so slightly. Ever since I had my first one at OSL in 2024 I've been hooked. The space is small but has enough seating for 10 ppl. I FINALLY made it here! I've been hearing about it for over a year from clients. Everyone raves about ALL their sandwiches. Being a former vegetarian, I'm the weirdo that goes to a muffuletta place and orders the pickled egg salad sando, but Delicious!!! Super fresh egg salad made with eggs that they actually pickle first and Duke's mayo. Topped with Zapps potato chips! I will be back because i need to try everything on their menu. And don't forget to order the warm chocolate chip cookie, yum! read more

Wow, this place is incredible. We had the meat muffuletta,pimento cheese sandy, slaw, egg salad, and a cookie. The pimento cheese sandy was like nothing I've ever had- unique and delicious. The muffuletta was amazing. Every bite had every ingredient. Staff was quick and helpful. Small place so beware- it gets packed. Thanks for this experience Sandy's ! read more
Having family having lived in New Orleans and visiting many times there, I knew I had to try out Sandy's which focuses on the iconic muffuletta sandwich, and while one wouldn't confuse Sandy's muffuletta sandwich with the original Central Grocery version in New Orleans, it was an outstanding version and great addition to the culinary landscape in SF. Sandy's has a targeted menu of sandwiches and sides, as well as some classic Zapo's chip options, as well as bottled/canned drink choices. Their muffuletta was hearty and filled with sliced charcuterie and cheeses, along with a healthy amount of their homemade spice olive salad (ie, jardiniere) and Duke's mayonnaise, all within a toasted muffuletta-style bread topped with sesame seeds that was warmed up on a panini grill. We made it a combo so that we could enjoy their herby cole slaw which was refreshing and flavored with dill, along with a choice of chips. The staff were super friendly and inviting, and while the shop isn't very big, we enjoyed our lunch at a counter along with front window. Will definitely be back when we are in SF! read more

They do the heated, melty cheese version of the Muff as the default so if you are expecting the cold version, speak up when you order. That said, it's delish and you might want to get two slices. The folks behind the counter are very sweet and obviously have a passion for the sandwich they serve. And there's more than just muffs here, nice little sides, other special sandwiches and great drinks. It's a lifestyle. read more
In San Francisco and I wanted something different for lunch. We found Sandy's Muffaletta on Haight Street. The location is small with limited seating. They specialize in Muffaletta sandwiches; .non traditional and mushroom style. They have an egg salad sandwich and salads. We ordered the meat Muffaletta and watermelon salad. The sandwich was heated and packed with meat, olive giardiniera and a tomato base. I have never had a Muffaletta sandwich with tomato base that was overpowering the flavor of the meat and giardiniera. The salad contained cilantro, mint, pickled red onions, sliced jalapenos, feta cheese, pepitas and vinegarette. It was delicious and tasty. Overall, Sandy's Muffaletta did not hit the spot for me. The tomato sauce over-powered the sandwich. The salad was ok but not leaving me wanting more. They have a good following and I hope they continue to succeed. read more

I enjoyed muffuletta and being it to be my first, I thought it was delicious and made differently from the usual sandwich. I like its crusty texture. I had the mushroom and my husband had the mushroom and ham. Located smack on the hip street of Haight-Ashbury, a nice spot for people watching. Prices of the muffuletta are high though so that's a drawback. read more
Fast & friendly warm service!! They're so awesome here, and I overheard one do the customers say they drove into the city just for this sandwich. Nice that they have a mushroom veggie option, and also hot ham! Inside is a bit small but there are around 4-5 smaller tables and then a counter with 4-5 chairs! Cute place and lively! read more
One of the BEST sandwiches I've had in a long time. They sell the sandwiches by an 1/8, a 1/4, or a whole. The prices are higher than I'd like to pay for a sandwich. I ordered an eighth of the Muffuletta and it was $14.50! An entire sandwich is $98! Anywho, the sandwich itself was superb! So many flavors married together for the perfect combination! The Muffuletta has Italian mortadella (without pistachios), prosciutto, salami, provolone, spicy olive spread and Duke's mayo. The bread was thin yet flavorful and crispy! Service was great as we ordered online and was ready by the time we got there. (I can't tell you much about the ambience as I wasn't the one to go inside to pick up the food.) I may not go to the city often, but when I do, I might just have to fork up the $14.50 for another eighth of that sandwich! read more
A for effort. Bread looks good but is dry. Olive dressing is... overpowering. They put it on the top and bottom of the sandwich, probably to make up for the dry bread. The mouthful of dressing overwhelms your taste buds and you can't really taste the meat. There's also mayo on it. Why? To make up for too much dressing? I'm really hungry and pissed off that I spent almost $16 on this. Go to Luca's on Fillmore and get one there. UPDATE: I couldn't eat it and told the guy behind the counter. He was super nice and asked if I wanted anything else. I got the pimento cheese sandwich with pickled okra. Same issue: dry bread and way too acidic. The cheese should have given a creamy balance to the pickled okra but instead it's just as acidic and provides no relief. The heat is great in both these sandwiches, but just too acidic overall to enjoy. I'm seriously disappointed. Not going back. read more

My wife and I came here to try a Muffaletta. It's the only thing they make and they do it well. I got the classic; she got the mushroom Muffaletta. They were more generous with the mushrooms on her sandwich than they were the cold cuts on mine. Both sandwiches tasted very good and we devoured them quickly. The bread was lightly toasted, the ingredients were fresh and high quality. The service was very good: the son of the owner served us and he was super friendly. The ambiance of this small restaurant was pleasant: my wife and I sat by the window and watched the pedestrians walk by. Perhaps the only downside: the sandwiches are somewhat on the pricey side....but, outside of New Orleans it's the only place I've seen so far that sells them. read more
An easy spot to grab a great lunch on Haight. Stopped by to try a muffuleta sandwich for lunch with chips and a drink and already look forward to coming back. The olive spread was fresh and tasty and the bread was nicely toasted. I didnt try the slaw this time but I definitely want to next time. I love that they have the Voodoo chips as well to pair with the sandwiches. I had my sandwich inside by the window but you can easily grab it to go and enjoy it at the park nearby. I personally would like the sandwich spicier but thats just a personal preference. It would be nice to be able to add extra heat with peppers or something. Service was very friendly and fast. Dont skip the cookies, they are some of the best and are super tasty! read more

Someone brought us a cookie from Sandy's and it was yummy! So that we looked into them and found out they make muffuletta sandwiches. My wife likes olives and never has it before, so she wanted to try. I don't love olives so never bothered, but tried these anyways. Called before they were closing and pre-order and of course got another cookie! I'm still not a fan of olives, but the sandwich was good and my wife really liked it. So all and all, was good. Felt a little expensive for a slice, buts it packed with meat, cheese, and all the good stuff you would find in a muffuletta! So if you're craving this from New Orleans, you don't have to go all the way there. And get the cookie! read more
Sold out of muffulettas by 1 pm on a Sunday, wow! It's hard to believe they have any leftovers for Too Good to Go. I ordered the classic muffuletta and roasted mushroom muffuletta and made one a combo by adding herby slaw and chips for an extra $5. I really wanted to like this shop's version of the classic New Orleans sandwich, but I was disappointed, especially because I've actually tried one in NOLA before. To start off with the good, the fresh, crunchy slaw was strong in dill flavor and paired well with the sandwiches. The sesame bread was nicely toasted and held together the ingredients well. Unfortunately, the spicy olive spread was way too overpowering and made the flavors imbalanced. I do like olives, but I couldn't taste anything but olives. One layer of that spread would have been better. The mushroom version is also the same price as the one with mortadella, prosciutto, and soppressata ($14 for an eighth size). 3.5 STARS Ever have the entire room stare at you with so much distain that you want to GTFO but can't. Yup, so that's what happened when I unwrapped Sandy's muff (not that kinda muff you pervs) in the ER waiting room. My sister was kind enough to bring me some food while waiting. She said, she stopped at Sandy's when she saw the line outside. Pop-up turned brick and mortar, Sandy's is the city's first muffuletta shop. They're open for takeout, delivery, and dine-in (order online to skip the line). M E N U New Orleans inspired muffuletta (meat or roasted mushroom): 1/8 ($14), 1/4 ($26), Whole 12" ($94). They also have salads and pickled egg salad or pimento cheese sandwiches. Zapps or Dirty chips available. Muffs are premade (no mods) with an option for toasted. F O O D * Roasted Mushroom Muffuletta w/ scallion, provolone, spicy olive spread, Duke's mayo (1/8 - $14): http://tinyurl.com/3zmkh23k --Requested toasted While unwrapping, the smell of toasty bread and earthy mushrooms wafted in the air. My fav part of the muff was the sesame seed studded Firebrand Artisan bread. It's pressed like a panino creating a crunchy and delicious base for the fillings. You can rarely go wrong with earthy mushrooms and melty cheese on buttery carbs. What makes a muff a muff is the olive spread...it's an explosive flavor bomb of salty, briny, punchy, tangy, and spicy with a touch of sweetness. But, it's incredibly salty (olives + capers) so it was hard to finish. My BP was normal when I arrived and shot up 50 mm hg after eating part of the muff so beware if you're salt sensitive or have HBP. My sister got their Meat Muff w/ italian mortadella (w/o pistachios), prosciutto and salami. She said, it was hella salty and couldn't finish it either. Overall, I can see why Sandy's is a fav among many with "best of" award(s). You can tell they use top-notch ingredients but I think you have to like the intense salty briny flavor of olives and capers to really enjoy it. Just a matter of palate preferences. Rounding up because it's like going to a Sichuan resto and complaining an explosive chili dish is spicy. read more
I've been following Sandy's for a while on Instagram since they were a pop-up, and it's taken me too long to visit their brick-and-mortar location on Haight one week day afternoon. They were pretty busy during late lunch hour. There's not much seating inside and it was full--good thing you can take your sandwich to-go and eat at nearby Buena Vista Park which is what the cashier suggested (great tip.) The Muffuletta 1/8 sandwich was a good size for me--generous size but I still felt like I could walk after! I enjoyed the bread and the tangy, spicy, zesty lunch meat and olive spread. That olive spread was a highlight! Reviews said it was too salty but I didn't think so. Service was very good--kind, helpful, and friendly, not fake. Will be back. read more

I'm not the biggest fan of muffuletta but wanted to give Sandys a try considering all the positive press it has received. On the positive side I really enjoyed the bread. But the saltiness of the sandwich is overbearing for me. I also tried the egg salad sandwich. When they say pickled they really mean it. The egg salad is really acidic/sour and hard to finish. Could have really used some type of sweet crunchy component to balance it out. Adding the chips as suggested makes it even more sour. Maybe bbq chips would have made it better. read more
