I lived in the Mission for not quite two years, but I tend to divide that short time into sunrise, broad daylight, and sunset. Note that I didn't say I divided the time equally. No, the sunrise section was shortest, and broad daylight was longest. Sunset's length was in the middle, but it also began before I knew when I would actually be leaving, so it stretched out a bit. Fox and Lion fits very neatly into that sunset. I was trying to try all these local places that I hadn't yet, and then sunset actually happened, and I was back at my rebuilt flat near the Panhandle. I came to Fox and Lion for the egg-salad sandwich. I wasn't quite disappointed. The sandwich was too small to do anything to my hunger, but I have come to expect that everywhere, and it was lovingly crafted and handmade. I don't know why it took so long to be made, but it's a cute little setting. It reminds me of the 1990s and the girl I dated who didn't shave and my own long-hair phase. I expected to overpay and undereat, and I did both, but neither one figures into my rating. Not really. If I'm being honest. It's an OK place that I probably would have liked better if I had discovered it during my Mission sunrise and gotten to know it better. It's located on a not so clean area of the mission, we almost missed the shop since it is very unassuming from the outside, almost looked more like a convenience store entrance with graffiti Small bare bones interior with a couple of tables The sandwiches are great- made with fresh bread, packed with delicious ingredients. I loved the Mary's with the cooked bell peppers and melted cheese. My husband loved his green dream- I didn't like the tapenade sauce, but he loved it. Sometimes sandwich/pizza shops don't have the best salads- but my Nico's salad was huge, with tons of colorful toppings- I was happy with it If you're wondering whether to get the cookies at the counter, the answer is yes! The bread and baked goods here are generally delicious. I just recommend you stay away from the tofu sandwich. The texture of the bread was lost on the wet flavorless tofu and equally so hummus. Cute little sandwich/coffee shop tucked away in the Mission. I had the Mary's sandwich and it was so so good. I added tomato. I want to come back and try out some of the other sandwiches. Some of them are so interesting, and I bet the salads are good too. They have an eclectic selection of craft beers and sodas. The employees were super nice. When I went in there was the cutest scene of several senior ladies enjoying coffee and bagels while chatting. Seemed like their hangout spot. Who doesn't love a Golden Girls vibe? VEGAN REVIEW: this morning I google searched for "vegan cinnamon roll SF" - how did I not know this place is in my neighborhood before now?! The cinnamon roll was so good I gobbled it up before getting a photo. Great coffee too. Then I stuck around long enough get lunch hungry and the Green Dream did not disappoint - fresh bread and deliciously unique ingredients made this vegan tummy very happy! All at very reasonable prices. Also can't wait to try some of the cans of unique craft beers they have in the fridge. I got the famous turkey sandwich for $9, and while there might be more gourmet sandwiches in the city, this is definitely one of the best quality/price sandwiches around. As you might expect from a bakery, the bread is fresh (an absolute must for a good sandwich), and it was surprisingly big for just $9. They even included roasted red peppers, which are often an extra charge at other places. I only wish they included tomatoes and spinach for no extra charge, but it's understandable given the base price of the sandwich is only $9. It would be easy to miss this place if you're not looking for it (there is not much signage out front), but with delicious sandwiches, pizza, baked goods, and more for reasonable prices, this is a place worth seeking out. Love this spot! It's got a cute indoor space with tables and even though I got my sandwich to-go, I could see hanging out in the future. They sell coffee and also alcohol but I did not get a drink. Service was super friendly and kind; I felt instantly comfortable. I ordered the New Orleans and also got a chocolate chip cookie. The sandwich was so fresh and had a very homemade taste. The bread was amazing and the flavor of the sandwich was delish. I want to try all the sandwiches on the menu, especially the green dream and egg salad. The cookie was soft and moist and perfect. I had a break in between work and was looking for a coffee shop to get some work done and get a quick snack. There were no coffee shops in the area coming up on Yelp (there was a Peet's but it was in a supermarket so that doesn't count), so it was great to see this one come up! It's on a main street but it's a wider, quieter street than other parts of San Francisco so it was easy to get you. There was free parking around the coffee shop which made the positive experience (so much of a San Francisco is finding parking, so finding a spot within 10 seconds was exciting). It was in the afternoon, super mellow and we were served quickly. I ordered the house iced cold lemonade- it was so refreshing and delicious! The only thing is it's pretty small for the cost and a lot of the glass cup is filled with ice. There were homemade croissants being made for the next morning which looked delicious, and I loved how they were making it where we can watch. Overall, great coffee shop and I'd love to come back and try their food items (pizzas, salads, sandwiches) and hopefully can have a larger lemonade with less ice! read more

There are lots of vegan options, and the food is fresh -- even the bread is made there every day. I admire the commitment it takes to start up and run a bakery (or any small business in SF). Making bread has got to be long hours, starting early in the morning. The place is clean and comfortable, and you can see everything being prepared. Oh and the prices are reasonable!
