Oh My Goodness!!! This place is heavenly! The food is fantastic! I really love to go here on a Saturday or Sunday because they offer Biscuits and Gravy and it is so yummy. It is hard to find good biscuits and gravy anywhere but this is a great spot for just that. If you haven't tried it already, order Whole Lotta Love for your drink, it is a dream. The only downside to this place is that when it gets busy, parking is not only difficult to find but the parking lot is designed terribly and it is a pain wiggle your car through it. read more

Great hungover brunch spot! Yummy food, very friendly service, and you can easily hide from the sun in one of their dark booths. I've been there a couple of times now, so I'll list all I've had that's worth mentioning. Fish tacos were fresh and tasty. Biscuits and Gravy were moist and portions were big! I'm surprised how weak their coffee is since the place is called Cafe Java. It tasted like diner coffee (watered down). I got a side of egg whites that came super oily but they still tasted good. Houston is home but Austin has been tugging my heart strings for quite some time, and Austin just struck one beautiful cord with Cafe Java. 10:am and it was packed like they were giving away free food. It may well have been free: inexpensive and the best tasting breakfast you'll have west of the prime meridian... invaluable. This service and food cannot be measured by monetary units, only in silence because it tastes so lovely. Love the atmosphere here. I will admit. I've never eaten here. I've only had coffee and it's been delightful. I typically come here when I am sick and tired of sitting at my desk and there is no "real" reason for me to be in my office. It's nice. I come here grab some coffee, use the free wifi. Service has always been nice, pleasant, and welcoming...even though Im not there to dine. Never had an issue with their wifi, its close to work. I live within walking to Café Java and I don't think I've ever been more grateful to live near a place to eat. They have the best hash browns that I've ever had. The staff is always friendly and in keeping with the local slogan of, "Keep Austin Weird". My favorite dish there is the French toast. They're always crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Great little joint for breakfast. Needed to find something aside from IHOP. We stopped in and had to wait about 20 minutes as the place was packed, but once we were seated service was quick. The smell of coffee wafts out of the doors, and the menu seemed like a good amount of variety. I had huevos rancheros, which was A-OK, actually the best thing on the plate was the refried beans. There's also a lot less-heavy stuff on the menu, btw. I wouldn't go here with more than 4 people at a time, they can probably handle it but that day we were 6, split between 2 booths. read more

Cafe Java is a great place for breakfast or lunch. The staff is extremely attentive and the service is fast. The food is always good and they don't mind substitutions to their menu choices. I can't think of anything on the menu that I haven't enjoyed. I will say that the hash browns are delicious but they are a large portion and I feel it after I eat them. Sometimes the side of fruit has things like canned peaches which I think is a shame when there are so many other ways to do fresh fruit with actual fresh fruit. read more

Never in 1,000 years would I pay $3.25 for a cup of coffee, but I will pay $1.85. I don't go there for coffee, but it is pretty good. There is no tall, grande and venti, it is just plain old small, medium and large. Breakfast is the attraction for me. The pancakes are addictive, the oatnut toast (or any sandwich made from it for that matter) is fantastic, even their canned corned beef hash is crack. If you want to get in and out with no nonsense and want a great breakfast, order the Java Special. It is at the top of the breakfast page (very obscure) and for $6.24 you get it all with beverage (no substitutions). I have two beefs that I need to mention. The fresh fruit cup occasionally will have canned fruit in it. So I always specify only fresh. AND every time you go in there and get the same exact thing it is a different price. I came out of there with a $15 omelete...which was my fault, but really? It all depends who rings you up. So watch out! read more

Get here early! i guarantee there will be a line, and with good reason because this place is damn good. i came here for breakfast and got there at the posted opening time. walking up I thought "great, right on time to open" NOPE, the place was half full already. this place is so cozy. lots of art on the walls and art hanging from the ceiling. a great way to start the day. I was lucky to get the special which was the strawberry creme pancakes. First time I ate it, the difference a little much. But their egg--on-target scrambled--is so good, I don't need the substitute. (I have a long running grudge against scrambled eggs, so this says a lot.) Soy chai tea latte is the ideal balance of sweet and frothy. There is no doubt after reading the reviews, that breakfast offerings at non-breakfast times brings out the 5 stars from those that have never seen a sun rise in their lives. Seriously it's the eggs and hash browns in the middle of the day. Put that aside and you have a bland American diner cuisine. Yep, that's all folks. The bright side? Good coffee. The ambiance is very casual, the place is unusually packed so it looks smaller than it is. It is however one of the few places that offer various choices in vege sandwiches among other cuisine. So in short, if you're looking for a casual place to grab a meal with a vege/vegan friend, or if you are vege and want to grab lunch with a non-vege place I highly recommend it. read more

This place has good food, which gets it to 3 stars, but there are some drawbacks I don't care for. Because it's tiny, there is generally a wait, which I usually wouldn't mind. However, they tend to rush you out the door. For example, when they give you your food, they leave the check. Not such a big deal, but they are aggressively cleaning your table and clearing plates. We came here for brunch and couldn't be happier with their service and food. It was a 25 minute wait for party of 5 but there is complimentary water and coffee for waiting guests. They had ample brunch selections, some that were quite unique. They offer Matcha, something you don't see often in a cafe. I had their steak omelette and I have to say it was probably the best one I have ever had. It had pieces of tender steak and the eggs themselves were juicy. It was served with a side of hash browns. Absolutely love this neighborhood cafe! The later you go on Saturday morning, the longer the wait, but it is worth it. My standard order is the 1x1x1, which is an egg, bacon slice, and a pancake. Add bananas to the pancake - it is delicious! I start out with a small iced mocha, too. Have also had the Belgian waffles, available only occasionally as the special, and I also love the Migas plate. The French toast is made-to-order with hot syrup. The staff is friendly, and they help each other out, and split the combined tips at the end of the day. If you go more than two or three Saturdays in a row, the staff will remember you and quickly remember your order, too. I never had made it in for lunch, but I bet it is as delicious as breakfast, and you can't help but salivate when you walk by the dessert counter to the register.
