One word; GELATO! This has probably been the best gelato that I have ever had to date! I took my little sister here while we were vacationing in St. Augustine, and we both fell in love. This was my little sister's first time ever having gelato, and now she's addicted! Café Del Hidalgo makes their gelato fresh daily, and you can see and taste the difference. The fluffy and creamy consistency will drive you nuts! They have lots of different flavors to choose from, but my favorite was the dulce de leche! Absolutely flipping amaze balls is all that I can say! The customer service is so-so being that this place is constantly packed because it's located in a touristy area of St. Augustine. The lines will be long, but be patient because it's totally worth the wait! And the portion sizes, you ask? Fully LOADED! The employees here will hook you up with a heaping mass of creamy goodness! There are several paid parking lots around the area, but it tends to get crowded in the evenings and on the weekends. Ever since I left, I've been trying to find a gelato place that's comparable in the bay area. Unfortunately, I haven't found a place that tastes even remotely close. Went there in the morning to get some refreshments and snacks 5 mins before they opened, and we planned on waiting till shops opened in that section to shop all day there .Sat down outside at one of their tables and a lady came out and put out menus condiments and a laminated paper on our table and went back in. Café del Hidalgo has a prime location and offers what people want: sandwiches, simple salads, and let's not forget gelato, which is probably its biggest draw. The space is festive, ample enough, and busy but not cluttered or tight. It's clear this is a restaurant used to tourists coming in and out, having quick meals, and fussing over samples of the famed gelato. From a business standpoint, this makes plenty of sense, but it doesn't lend over to the highest of quality control. Indeed, you cannot concentrate on a superb, hand-crafted approach with great attention-to-detail in a place like this. And that's fine, there is a place for restaurants like this one and certainly a town's tourist epicenter is that place, but don't expect the level of consummate service and food found at, say, The Floridian. The gelato is very good most of the time. It tastes very fresh and many flavors are offered. The sandwiches are not as impressive, and seem an afterthought of sorts, even. The service is mostly young, college-aged, kids and they are super-friendly and try to be helpful. Alas, they are not always able to keep up with the crowds: it can get slow here, downright pokey at times. They do try their best, but its seems there is some issue with organization plus the sheer volume of business they contend with here. So, in all, I would recommend Café del Hidalgo for gelato but not lunch or dinner. And not if you're in a rush. read more

This is a quaint little café located in Saint Augustine Florida. It is on St. George Street, one of the pedestrian streets in the Old City. It was very cool day when my wife and I were there. At least cold for Florida standards. We originally came in to get a café latte. But we saw the gelato. We both had an amaretto latte, and we shared a gelato. It was one scoop of New York Cheesecake gelato, and another scoop of creme brûlée gelato. Everything was simply delicious. 30 minutes since ordering 2 crepes and the order is still not ready. That's on top of having waited 10 minutes after sitting down, to be told that you have to order at the cashier first. I guess you are "supposed to know that" because a tiny sign at the ceiling says "Please Pay Cashier". I know people will continue to stop at this place because of its location, but it's not good. The gelato was grainy and just not tasty at all. I've have gelato all over the world and this junk is made in someone's bathtub or something. Grainy, bland and expensive. The guy behind the counter needs a break or something. Authorities should close this place. Extremely overpriced, bad service and bad taste galore. It's a shame places like this are allowed to function in the heart of St Augustine. We were a big group and ordered 10 "signature" coffees of different flavors, they took forever and very disorganized, only brought half of the coffees ordered with very poor presentation and didn't even have the size (20oz) that we had paid for. What great good! It's a little bistro hidden on the corner of St. George Street and Hypolita Street in St. Augustine. I got the frozen white sangria which was amazing! Our food consisted of the Mona Lisa panini (yum!), a balsamic and pork crepe (yum!) and I had their famous meatball Parmesan panini which was absolutely amazing! Went here with Family on Christmas Eve. Five of us came in for dinner. After stating we were uncomfortably warm ..The doors were propped open and we were told the AC was broken. Our sandwiches were fine however the salads looked like they used bag lettuce with most of the lettuce having brown spots. The cashier ( young woman ) who claimed to be the person in charge gave me a ticket for 3 small gelato and when I stated there are 5 of us, was told that is 25.00 of free gelato and she could only give me 3 .... How is it free when we just spent over 60.00 on food that was disappointing while tolerating the heat. I walked in because of the beautiful ice cream display. It was calling my name from the door. Inside was a nice and relaxed atmosphere with big tables made of heavy antique wood. We decided to have a few scoops. The guys behind the. Iunter were friendly enough and helped us with sampling different flavors. When we were ready to order they sent us around the corner to get in a line and choose sizes and pay. It was s very weird ordering system. We ordered way too much ice cream one cup with two scoops is enough for two to 3 in my family. Instead we ended up wasting a lot of ice cream and money as s small is $6 . In future we will order the large four scoops one for $8 and split it versus $25 . The ice cream was delicious. It was soft. Fresh and flavorful. I ordered the tiramisu and it tasted just like the dessert. Rum cake flavor was awesome. Cherry Garcia was good, lots of cherries blended in . I would pas on the cheesecake flavor. Great little cafe! We stopped in right as they opened for coffee and Italian soda. The coffee is smooth and delicious. The barista stated it was from Italy as well and you can definitely tell a difference. Stopped in on Good Friday at lunch time. One of easiest restaurants at that time to get into. Three of us went in and I ordered for all three at the counter (no wait people). Food adequate but rudeness was beyond anything. I ordered a Tuna Salad right after I ordered a Turkey Salad Panini for one of my party. When food came out, I received a Tuna Salad (not a Panini). The manager went by and I said could I get a piece of bread as I "thought" I was ordering a panini but got just a salad. His reply was very matter of factly, "that is what you ordered. I can't get you any bread because our bread is already pre-cut and it would ruin our staging". After reading the other Yelp reviews here it is apparent that he could care less as he knows that the majority of his clientele is visiting and doesn't have his feet held to the fire. The waiter seated us and then we patiently waited 5 minutes for someone to get our drink order. Then after more then 25 minutes our drinks were never brought to us but a salad that was for another table was set down on our table and still no drinks yet. Also he had sat a sandwich in front of us that was for another table and during the covid pandemic what does he do he takes this sandwich and still delivers it to the correct table. At this point I decided we would find another place to eat. As we are walking out the door the owner insist we pay for this salad yet we hadn't ate anything and no drinks wherever delivered. But being patient my wife decides okay I'll just go ahead and pay for the salad we'll avoid conflict and go our way.So my daughter says well if you're making us pay for the salad we need a to go box. He proceeds to tell my daughter it's best if she quit talking. At that point I was amazed and he keep babbling something so I told him okay fine let's get it paid for and you can shut up now. He tells me stop being belligerent sir I'm thinking wow I haven't raised my voice and he is being very rude to my daughter and this is the worst attitude I've ever experienced. He proceeds to start talking some more I said aren't you going to shut up not you say it's best no speaking anymore. He starts yelling for me to leave his restaurant or he will call the police. I couldn't help but laugh at this point knowing we could have very well continued walking out of his restaurant as we didn't eat or drink anything. The other customers that had been waiting for a while also began getting up leaving. And another customer that was walking in decided he would need there either.
