Walking around Saint Augustine on a busy spring break March day we stopped by the Cuban Cafe for lunch. Lots of people, very popular, no inside seating but we did snag an outdoor table. The ordering process seemed chaotic but I ordered two Cuban sandwiches and a Cafe Con Leche for lunch. Told the wait would be 15 minutes, we sat outside in the meantime. After 25 minutes and no sandwiches, I inquired inside as to the status - finally, five minutes later the sandwiches were ready. However, no Cafe Con Leche . Again went inside, waited for the front desk server to process several orders before I could ask about the status of the drink. Nothing had been made, so another five minutes for the drink order. By this time I was plenty hungry, and was disappointed with the Cuban sandwich. It's basically a toasted ham sandwich, nothing particularly unique about it. This cute little shop is located right off St George street on one of the little side streets. They had empanadas and croquettas in a premade display, but our sandwiches were made fresh after we ordered! It was fresh, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The size was huge. I ended up splitting it with my five year old. She loved it. She kept saying how delicious the pork was. If I recall correctly, we tried a beef empanada and a sweet one (do not recall which flavor) and they were both perfect! So much so that I went back for one more! The service was great and fast. The cafe is beautifully decorated inside and it made me immediately happy when I walked in because of the island vibe. The food was okay. The beef empanada tasted much better with hot sauce and I don't usually put sauce on things. The problem is that the meat was too mashed, like you couldn't tell the meat from the other ingredients. Everything inside just blended together so you couldn't appreciate the actual beef part of the empanada. If I didn't know it was beef from ordering it myself, I wouldn't be able to tell just by tasting it. The churro was a little overcooked and needed a little more sugar, but it was decent.
