A lovely gem of a bakery located in DUMBO. I've been wanting to visit Burrow for a while now and have read so many fantastic reviews online. I finally visited Burrow on a quiet Wednesday afternoon and was delighted to see neat rows of cookies and impeccably decorated cakes lined up in the glass case. To my pleasant surprise, they also had vegan options! The employee helping me was kind enough to point out which options were vegan and gave me the inside scoop that there are usually more vegan options in the AM. I immediately gobbled up a savory cookie that had the perfect thin, yet slightly chewy texture. Between that and the perfectly sweet and toasted cherry granola (sold in a bag), I'm excited to revisit the bakery. So I have a confession to make. It's one of those things you want to keep a secret forever but your conscience won't allow you to. That secret is Burrow. I would love to keep this cute little Japanese cafe that makes a twist of Japanese/French pastries all to myself and those who are regulars (you know who you are. Oh and sorry for sharing our little spot). However, for the greater good I am willing to take a risk that my favorite pastry (almond croissant) might possibly be out of stock when I get there and also wait longer to have my order placed. If this isn't a good deed, we will need to redefine the word. The cafe is located inside a building and can be easily missed by most people who's not looking hard enough for delicious pastries. The shop is really small (whatever you have in mind, it's probably half of that size). It can fit about 5-6 people and there are no chairs or tables so it's a grab and go kind of place. So far, I've tried a few items like blueberry muffin, spinach and bacon quiche, raspberry almond muffin and almond croissant but my favorite is their almond croissant. The cafe also serves coffee and tea and the drinks are good as well. Prices are a little on the higher end as the pastries are small but I believe in quality over quantity. Go give this place a try if you're around the area. And if you're not, it's worth the trip. Don't forget to send me a thank you message once you're hooked on it like I am. If you're not satisfied, don't message me. And also, beware that once you enter you might not want to go wherever you were planning to head to, for me it's work. I smelled the most wonderful smells when they opened the door, and hence I fell into the Chamber of Secrets. Everything looks and smells incredible. In a neighborhood chock full of coffee shops with good pastries, Burrow is my hands down favorite. It's tucked away inside a nondescript building like a little secret, and is constantly packed because the people of Dumbo know what's up. I come by a few times a week for their iced oat latte (not QUITE as good as my forever fave, La Colombe, but the best one I've tried in this neighborhood!) and usually can't resist getting a little cookie or pastry. They have the loveliest, most beautiful cake slices. If you've ever had cake from an Asian bakery before - you know the light, fluffy, more mousse-like texture to expect. They also have a rotating selection of cookies (mostly due to the fact that they are typically sold out of some types on any given afternoon), and everything I've tried has been delicious and just a little unusual. Their cookies are very European-inspired - think lots of almond-based treats, sable cookies, and palmiers. And it always smells just heavenly in here. Honestly feel so lucky to work near this place! This review is only for breakfast items. Tomato focaccia - Every bite was tasty as there was a good distribution of filling/seasoning. It had a very crackly crust which I enjoyed. That said, it was different from any focaccia I've had and was on the dry side--if you expect traditional focaccia, this is a very remote cousin. Fig + Brie scone - Same comments as above. Flavor profile is excellent and not too salty or sweet; the cheese is subtle. The varied textures were my favorite part of the experience and made it fun to eat. However, it was also too dry to be entirely enjoyable. Pricing was standard for NYC bakeries. I probably wouldn't purchase the above items again as you can get better savories elsewhere: for the record, my standard is Sullivan. Would like to come back for croissants and sweets. read more

Little bakery with pastries by the Instagram-famous Ayako Kurokawa. Genius looking desserts, perfect as gifts. Make sure to check out her website to view the portrait cakes she makes, and other whimsical custom orders. Cookies are very rich, best enjoyed with a hot cup of tea or coffee. My mom does not like sweets, but loved their maple madeline. Their caramels (both strawberry and mango flavored) are the best caramels I've ever had. However, be warned that this is a very small space, no seating/maybe a chair or two but definitely no tables. It's more of a take-out place (I hope they expand into a slightly bigger space with window lighting some day! They deserve it.) read more

Discovered this (literally) hidden cafe right after I missed my shuttle this morning, and it was honestly worth it. I got the blueberry muffin in the interest of time, but it was good--cakey, moist, crispy and chewy on top. I have been wanting to try this bakery out since I saw all the photos of their pastries and goodies. I finally got the chance to try Burrow out this week and I am so glad I did! Lately I have been in to madeleines and their raisin and almond version was so good. It's probably the best Madeleine I have had so far! I also enjoyed the ginger pie cookie. It had a nice crunch and the ginger really came through. Not too sweet but just right. I highly recommend this bakery. The quality of the baked goods is outstanding and the prices are affordable. Excellent little bakery. Their lindser tart which they just call raspberry jam is huge and delicious! The shop is well hidden inside an office building but has a really large selection of cookies, tarts, bars, cake slices and coffee. Lapin purchased a couple of treats for me the other day. He gotten a couple of scones and two chocolate mousse cake (he also got a cookie but ate that without sharing -.-). The blueberry scone was a bit dry and tasted like Pillsbury biscuits and the mousse cake was fluffy but kind of bland. The treats are a bit small and bland for the price. I will trek across the Brooklyn Bridge in the snow uphill both ways to get my choux, raspberry jam cookies, strawberry shortcake, sablés, chocolate mousse cake, croissants on Tuesdays and Thursdays... (this is why the trek across the Brooklyn Bridge is necessary). The owners are the nicest people in the world and were able to make nut-free choux for me. I just took a bite of my hot almond croissant and had to catch the oozing creamy center that dripped onto my chin... and then I said "that's it I have to write a review"! Just came back from Paris last month and this is still by far the best almond croissant I've ever had. These Japanese know how to do French! Everything is baked fresh on premises, prepared beautifully, and displayed with neatly printed descriptions. Small batches so you never know if your favorite will be sold out but it's a great excuse to try something new and delicious. The variety of options for such a small shop is impressive and the prices are wonderfully fair. They have a great beverage menu and their hot beverages are served in old school nyc street cart vendor cups. There is no up-charge for non dairy milks; this is an honest establishment that's not trying to nickel and dime their customers. Their desserts have the taste which I would describe as gentle, soft and polite. Somehow I think it is carried down from the owners' characteristic. My son and I come here after fencing for a weekly treat. This lovely, homely little bakery is run by charming Japanese folk. The pastries are simple and perfectly baked. We love the fig and also the chocolate ganache - both melt in-the-mouth delicious. The hot chocolate is incredible - a mix of milk and dark chocolate flavours plus toasted coconut and rich cream. It is simply the best hot chocolate we have ever had. This place is the most amazing hidden gem. We popped in here just for a cup of coffee, after seeing all the amazing desserts, we got two with our coffees. They were so amazing, that we turned around and picked up three more! The Almond Tulle, incredibly crisp and delicate. Perfectly caramelized. The Raspberry jam bar with their own private jam, which we asked if they sold it because if they did we seriously would've bought a quart to take home. The Tea Cake was sublime. I haven't enjoyed one as much outside of Japan. The Maple Madeline excellent with a subtle twist. The most challenging this is making sure I time visits here for when they're actually open! Ayako-san is the BEST!!! She made incredible cakes for our dinner party that were the HIT of the evening. She is incredibly talented artistically AND at making the most phenomenol cakes I have ever tasted. Every single cake she makes is absolutely fantastic. My favorites were the strawberry shortcake, pistachio cake, and chocolate cake. All the desserts are perfectly balanced and most importantly, not too sweet.
