Bufalina is back on the east side of Austin and has the same old, delicious oven! Pizzas were still great, fresh ingredients and full of flavor. The new location is small and you feel it more than the previous. Intimate but tight. Apparently there are 400 types of wine, buy only 4 non-alcoholic beverage options. Maybe an controversial opinion - this is the best restaurant in Austin. Skip the BBQ and get yourself some Bufalina. From start to finish, this place more than surpassed my expectations. Pizzas are perfectly legit Neopolitan with that beautiful leopard crust, yet holds the ingredients well. Pastas and salads are also thoughtfully executed, with a fantastic and diverse wine selection - paired with NA options for those who choose not to imbibe. Bread is also fantastic with a huge spread of butter on the side that rivals that served at The French Laundry. No jokes. Lastly, don't sleep on the chocolate mousse. That olive oil and maldon salt on top of the chantilly is to die for. Ill be thinking about this place for awhile. read more

Bufalina finally reopened its East Cesar Chavez location this week, just a bit further east down the road off Mildred by Juan in a Million. There are a decent amount of parking spots available as well. I didn't get a chance to try it before it relocated so I was excited to come by when a friend suggested it. To start, we had the suppli (carnaroli rice, mozzarella, chili oil), which are similar to arancini, just oblong shaped. It was well fried, crispy and not oily, and so much steam comes out when you cut into it. The cheeses used were flavorful and really made the dish. We then tried the pansotti stuffed pasta (ricotta, walnut pesto, fennel pollen, pecorino), which was a solid dish. You could taste the walnuts in the fresh pesto, and the pasta had good texture. For pizza, we tried two: - guanciale (mozzarella, parm, black pepper, red onion) - guanciale is pork jowl, which I love and was always my favorite BBQ cut to get from Fette Sau in Williamsburg or really any Korean BBQ place that has it. This was a white pie, and the flavors felt reminiscent of a carbonara. Honestly, I love red onion and it's one of my favorite toppings so no surprise that it was my favorite part of this pizza. - anchovy (cherry tomato, mozzarella, black olive, basil) - I originally thought this would have a red sauce because the traditional pizza napoli I've had has it. I love anchovies and these are bright, salty, and garlicky, made even moreso with the olives. However, the sparse cherry tomatoes and sips of wine are your only break from the salt, so I still think I was missing the red sauce. Overall, I really enjoyed this pizza but it's hard to have more than a slice or two in one sitting. For wine, we welcomed any and all suggestions and went with what the staff seemed most excited about - because I always believe that love of food is infectious in wanting to share that experience and flavor with others. We started with a white, then a red, and finished with a refreshing and interesting bubbly digestif in lieu of dessert. The space is cozy, intimate, and the ambience and mood felt like I was back in NYC having a great dinner with friends. I had forgotten also, how much I love pizza with wine. This was a normal thing when I was living in NYC but since moving to Austin, I would just grab a slice at Home Slice or indulge in Detroit style pizza from Via 313 or Jet's, which I at most had beer or cocktails with. But Bufalina gently reminded me that there is truly nothing sexier than Neapolitan pizza paired with wine at night in dim lighting. UPDATE: I came back again with some other friends and tried the Red Pie (tomato, double garlic, double parm, chili flake, oregano) and the Goat Cheese and Pistachio (goat cheese, mozzarella, pistachio, honey, red onion) and they are not to be missed. The red sauce I was craving from my first visit gave it to me in spades with the sweet, spicy, savory full flavored red pie. The goat cheese pizza achieved sweet and savory harmony. The goat cheese was mellowed out with the honey accompanied by the spicy bite from the red onion, as well as texture from the pistachio. Both pizzas have easily become my new favorites. read more

There was a lot of anticipation for the reopening of Bufalina and I have to say it was well worth the wait. Showed up during happy hour on a Friday. The restaurant was full but we were lucky enough to not have to wait for a table. Our server was laidback, but helpful. Gave us time to look at the menu, but when asked for recommendations he was not too helpful. We ended up getting the stracciatella and two pizzas: the guanciale and the calabrese. The stracciatella was pretty much the stuff fairytales are made of. Every bite was perfection and it was the perfect start to a great dining experience. I did not care for the calabrese pizza. The tomato made it a bit wet and soggy. The guanciale was superb. I'd definitely have it again and again. I wish we would have tried one of their pastas, but it's a great excuse to go back. read more

If you like a brick oven pizza from a local shop this was the spot. There is very limited parking since in a neighborhood but I was able to park only two blocks away, and my date was actually able to get it in the parking lot. You do have to have your whole party just to even be waitlisted which I found weird as it took 30 more minutes for a table. But the food was delicious and it was nice and toasty in there from the oven. We order two pizzas the calabrese and the Fresca. We weren't aware of the wait being long for a pizza but the waiter recommended a delicious appetizer Pane Rustico with fancy butter. That pizza is very thin and toppings are fresh and not ready made. Two people can easily finish one pizza so we had some leftover. I wish I had room for dessert. read more

So, I love this restaurant, but wonder if the executive chef has changed recently because the food quality has gone down. Last visit had the Caesar salad - terribly garlicky & over way too much dressing. Their excellent bread has now suddenly taken on a strong sourdough flavor (don't love sourdough), and the pasta was way too oily (I heard the reason is they started adding butter). It's a bit depressing for me as this has been my favorite local restaurant for pizza, salad, and pasta. I hope they go back to the strict following of the recipes that got them where there are and don't tinker with the successful formula. For now, too garlicky, too oily, too much sourdough taste... bummed.... read more

Overall score 3.1 out of 5 Personally, I think this place is overrated. The long wait with the DPRK vibe just to get seating is ridiculous. Our server was nice. The stracciatella was phenomenal. The brown butter agnolotti was just ok. But man oh man the pizza was nothing special. The dough was OK, but the crust was nothing spectacular, sauce was OK, cheese was really good. I personally would not come back for the pizza, but would definitely get the stracciatella again. In the short while that the new location has been open, we've had the pleasure of eating here a couple of times already. The draw here is definitely the food. Food (5 out of 5) -- the starters, pasta, and pizza here are all outstanding. Kudos to Chef Grae Nonas! Wine, cocktails, beer (4) -- the wine list here is, as expected, excellent (solid 5 stars). The other options are fine, but not at the same caliber. Although the new space is larger, it is still fairly small which likely makes it a tough challenge for the bar. Service (mixed) -- we've had some great service, but also some really poor service. That's understandable for a restaurant that reopened just a week or so ago. I expect it will get better. Atmosphere (2) -- although larger than their previous space, it is still quite small. The relatively small space is also full of hard surfaces that cause the noise to at first seem fun and bustling (fun and fine for a bar), but for a meal it got to be irritatingly difficult to visit. read more

Came in from out of town and manager ripped us for addressing a dude on staff as a dude. We wanted pizza not politics.

I really wish this place accepted reservations. Three of us went here on a Saturday at 6 PM, and there was unfortunately already an hour wait for indoor seating. Since we couldn't wait, we agreed to immediate seating outside. I would not recommend doing this in the summer. We all just sat there sweating trying to enjoy our meal. They have fans to try to keep the flies away, but they were more distracting than anything. They have a very extensive wine list and surprisingly had Athletic non alcoholic beer too! We enjoyed our pizza and pasta for sure, but I think there are other places that can accommodate more people inside. Again, good food but disappointed on the set up read more

This Italian restaurant is a true culinary experience and indulgence you don't want to pass up. I've never had such a good experience with a restaurant before. First off, the stracciatella is absolutely divine--rich, creamy, and melts in your mouth. The bread underneath has the perfect garlic and buttery flavor that isn't overpowered by a butter flavor like many other restaurants make their bread. Eating either on its own is delicious, but putting them together is pure magic. Hidden beneath the cheese are slices of peaches that add a hint of sweetness, providing another level of flavor to the dish. The mushroom pizza here is equally impressive, with the flavor getting better with each bite. Yes, it might be burnt, and the mushrooms have a jerky-like texture, but somehow, these imperfections add to the experience. The flavors shine through on the second bite, compelling you to reach for another slice, and before you know it, you're almost regretting how much you've eaten. Let me first start by saying I love Bufalina Due on Burnett, I go there at least three times a month. I love this restaurant so much that when my Italian in laws came to visit from Milan, I told them they have to try this restaurant. While showing them around downtown, we decided to check out Bufalina on Caesar Chavez, our first time at this location. We waited almost 50 minutes for our pizzas and then when we finally got our pizzas, they didn't bring my husband's pizza. We first thought it was on its way but no server made eye contact nor did they hear us when we called out for them. We did eventually get some service and it turned out that the back kitchen messed up the order- we ended up getting my husband's pizza almost an hour and ten minutes later. One can argue that our order was late because the oven was clogged with other pizza orders but we sat right opposite it and it did not have a queue of pizzas. Food was also not on point. I always get the Fresca pizza but the arugula on this pizza tasted strange. Overall, it was a very disappointing experience. read more
