numero28 has a very lovely and cozy ambiance, especially the outdoor seating area when the weather is nice. the service was also super friendly and fast, which made the experience pleasant overall. they have some good happy hour deals, but the margherita flatbread had a bit too much crust and not enough sauce, so it ended up tasting a little dry. the bolognese was somewhat bland and the pasta itself was slightly hard. the cacio e pepe felt a bit more gimmicky than anything and didn't really stand out flavor-wise. the cannelloni con funghi was heavy on the cheese and oil, though the flavors came through a bit better than the other dishes. we did get free cannolis for our birthday celebration, which was a really sweet gesture and definitely appreciated. overall, the vibes and service were good, but the food felt pretty mid for the price, so it's probably not somewhere i'd rush back to. read more

We only came here bec a lot of cafes are closed so we went it for tea & coffee, but when we smelt the cheese and pizza- we gotta order! When my girlfriend first visited me, she begged for us to go to Numero28, a small but authentic Italian restaurant in the 2nd Street District of downtown Austin. It was so good that the next time she visited, I told her we had to go back. This time, it was my choice. Both times were different experiences, though both great. Our first time, we went on a Saturday evening right before a show was taking place at ACL, so it was very busy. Since it was just the two of us, a space to sit outdoors had just opened up, and we jumped at the opportunity. She ordered an Aperol Spritz, and I ordered a Paloma Spritz. My girlfriend speaks Italian, so she was able to talk to our waiter fluently while I got to be the dumb boyfriend being babysat. I fear this will happen when we inevitably go to Italy as well... I ordered their Cacio e Pepe, and she ordered... something else that I don't remember. I was unaware that the Cacio e Pepe was served in a pecorino cheese wheel (though it says it on the menu), so when they brought out the block of cheese I was pretty surprised--and sad that they didn't give me the block of cheese to eat out of like a Panera bread bowl. The natural cheesiness that the pasta gains from being tossed in the pecorino with the hot pasta really makes it such an excellent dish. It's cooked al dente and was very flavorful and peppery. The next time we went, I ordered a Hugo while she stuck with her Aperol Spritz. We also shared an order of their Garlic Focaccia Bread with olive oil, which was very good. I once again got the Cacio e Pepe, with the show allowing me to truly enjoy them mixing the pasta in the pecorino. It was great once again. Our waiter this time was not fluent in Italian so my girlfriend couldn't flex her intelligence on me this time! I got to order our food. Aha! I wouldn't be surprised if we go back there soon the next time she visits. She better get back to Austin soon, or I'll be going back for another dose of cheese wheel pasta without her. We walked by this place a few times before finally stopping and trying it. If you are looking for authentic Italian food that is out of this world this is your place. We had the minestrone soup which was so good!!! The Margherita Pizza and the sauce was straight out of Italy. Had an ok experience at Numero 28 for dinner. The staff were very attentive and kind but the food was just so so. We started out with the bruschetta appetizer and the only word to describe the taste was bland. It was as if they forgot to season the whole dish. We then moved on the table side cacio e pepe, which was prepared in a large wheel of cheese. The unique presentation was interesting but again the flavor was just ok. It was a very rich dish and you'd think that anything made with butter, cheese and pasta would be a home run but alas not so much. The restaurant had indoor and outdoor space and was pretty busy. Second street is touristy so maybe volume trumps quality. If you're in the area and don't mind a run of the mill Italian experience, Numero 28 fits the bill but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there again. read more

We needed to grab a bite to eat before heading to a taping at ACL. The patio was crowded but luckily we got a spot. My friend had sunglasses and was willing to sit facing the sun. With that being said, they should invest in some sort of sun shade. If you hear nothing else, the Lasagna at Numero28 is fire. This perfectly portioned pasta is prepared in house. The vibe is upscale casual with a Cozy inside and tiny patio. I had this restaurant on my list for a while, so the anticipation to eat here was much desired, however I don't think it lived up to my expectations. ~The Cacio E Pepe was a 3/5, I was expecting so much more because I kept seeing the wheel of cheese videos and it looked so yummy. It paired well with the tomato sauce of the Arancina vegetariana. 3/5 ~ The cannolis were decent, too much cream for the crust on the outside. 3/5 Staff was friendly, the food runners were nice, but I saw them more than my actual server, but that's okay food was delivered in a timely manner and prepped the way we ordered it. This place is cutely tucked away on second street, and is very homey! The food and service were both great, and they serve their cacio y pepe in the wheel of cheese as is traditional. My only complaint was the AC. We were there at around 5:30 on Memorial Day weekend, and between the heat outside and the kitchen, it was very warm in there. Overall, the food was great though! It took 3 minutes for our espresso martini (which was fabulous) but then 20 minutes for the gin fizz (which was good when it came). during the time waiting for the drink, our server avoided us like the plague. they then took our order, and everything came out at once. Numero 28 specializes in authentic Neapolitan pizza, and they do it so well! I had the 12-inch Diavola pizza, which is topped with spicy salami and cut into 6 slices. The crust was soft and chewy and the ingredients tasted so fresh and high-quality. I even reheated my leftovers the next day in the oven and they held up beautifully. I also enjoyed a refreshing Hugo spritz. They have select brunch cocktails for $8 -- definitely check the brunch menu to see which ones are included (the Hugo spritz, sadly, is not). Good overall meal. The service all night was spot on. We were quickly seated and all the food and drinks came out as fast as I can remember. It was a warm summer evening so the Paloma spritz was a good way to start. It was crisp and had a decent kick. We did the bruschetta trio for an appetizer. One was the traditional tomato version that you see. The others were prosciutto and a ricotta version. The traditional was the best, the prosciutto had a splash of honey that was pretty tasty. We had a couple of pizzas, the Diavola and Austin. The diavola was standard and what you would expect, the flavors were good. The Austin was sausage, peppers and fresh jalapenos. Also very good flavors. My biggest piece of feedback on the pizzas was the crust good have been more crispy. The portions of the topping were good but the crust could not stand up to the tomato sauce. Dessert was pistachio gelato and an affogato with vanilla gelato. The gelato was real good with both, authentic and creamy. Again the service was great as the whole staff worked really well together to make sure everything was taken care of. Came here for a last min dinner as we thought pizza sounded delicious after an afternoon of golf. Were seated on the patio - very cozy/tight seating, but after walking inside to use the restroom I felt we made the right choice - the inside was not that cool. It took us a while to have someone come take our orders after the busser dropped off 2 waters. We started with a salad (Rucola e Parmigiano) - the cheese was delicious and the portion was huge! Then, we moved on to an 18in pizza we did 50/50 on - half margherita, half capricciosa. The margherita was the winner; the quality cheese, flavorful sauce, and crusts pillowy edge with thin but sturdy center really shone. The capricciosa half had a tasty sounding combo of toppings, but just wayy too many. The size was perfect for 2 people and the shape is a bit oblong rather than round which makes the pieces managable. Food came out lightning fast after ordering, so if you're hungry you're in luck, but if you want to pace your meal, do it yourself. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating--the weather wasn't scorching so my colleague and I decided to eat outside. I decided to order the "Prosciutto E Mozzarella Oven Baked Panini," which included Parma prosciutto ham, fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, arugula, and chipotle aioli. It was DELICIOUS--the panini wasn't too soft or overly pressed, and the combination of the panini ingredients was perfect. The mozzarella really did taste fresh and it gave a great balance between the saltiness of the prosciutto and the taste of the aioli. Saw on Google reviews that this was a highly rated Italian place and wanted to swing by to satiate the sudden craving for Italian food. However I have to say I wasn't too impressed. The interior of the restaurant gives off very homey Italian country vibes-- it's pretty small but they also offer outdoor seating which we didn't take advantage of because of the weather. Our waitress was very nice and we didn't have to wait long for our order. The Diovola pizza caught me by surprise as soon as it was delivered to the table. I had to verify with our waitress that it was in fact the red sauce Diovola pizza that we ordered and that the sauce was under the cheese. However, half of the pizza did not have any sauce under the cheese and the other half felt like there was too much sauce and caused the pizza to feel soggy overall. I really liked how soft and chewy the pizza crust was. (Just a note: I don't order pizza from Italian restaurants often so I'm not sure if the oil on top of the spicy salami (pepperoni) is just something that happens normally) My partner felt that the lasagna had an excess of Italian seasoning which upset his stomach. He was a big fan of the spicy salami on the pizza. Overall I found that the ambiance of the restaurant was very pleasant (even if it did get a bit loud) and the food was decent. If we came back we definitely wouldn't be ordering the lasagna again and would most likely opt to try their pastas instead. read more
