Absolutely loved this place. Great food and great vibe. It is downtown so parking is limited. The pasta was so creamy and pizza was amazing. Pizza had amazing texture and good amount sauce and toppings. Dessert was great with their tiramisu. Service was fantastic 10/10 read more

I'm giving Numero28 two stars, and honestly, the only reason it gets two instead of one is because the service was genuinely good. Our server was fast and attentive, and I had no complaints about the service itself. We ordered the fried cheese ravioli, cacio e pepe, and bucatini all'amatriciana. The fried cheese ravioli was crispy, but otherwise pretty generic and didn't have much flavor. The cacio e pepe was creamy, and the tableside presentation of mixing it in the large cheese wheel was definitely a cool, but the actual pasta was incredibly bland. The bucatini was the same way: perfectly edible, but just remarkably bland. That was the biggest disappointment for me. The restaurant clearly puts a lot of effort into creating a trendy, fun atmosphere and making the food feel like an experience, but none of that really matters if the food itself doesn't have much flavor, like at all. The portions were average and would definitely fill you up, so I don't have an issue with the quantity. The problem was the value. We paid around $80 for an appetizer and two pasta dishes, including tip, and didn't order any drinks. At that price point, I expected considerably better. Both pasta dishes tasted closer to a mediocre frozen TV dinner than what I'd expect from freshly prepared Italian food at this price. The water also had a strange smell and taste, almost like old dishwater. I have no idea what caused it, but it was noticeable. It was also extremely hot inside. I understand that it's Texas and it was triple digits outside, but the restaurant honestly felt hotter than outside at times. It was somewhat loud too, but it's a small space, so I don't really fault them for that. Overall, the service was great, but the food simply wasn't worth the price. They do a good job making the restaurant feel trendy and fun, but for me, the actual food didn't live up to the presentation. I'd rather spend the same money at a hole-in-the-wall Italian restaurant where the food has real flavor. I wouldn't go back. read more

Great Italian restaurant, I have visited both Houston and Austin location and I love both. Great service, clean and classy yet casual environment. You get a feel of Italy as if you are stepping into a restaurant in Italy more so at the Austin location, where as Houston location is more of a fancy interior. Food is great at both locations I have tried their Cacio e Pepe pasta where they do it on the cheese wheel and that is always a fun experience. What I ordered & would reorder: Carpaccio do Manzo (beef) Pappardelle allá bolognese Cacio e pepe Tiramisu read more

Numero 28 is the perfect date night spot. We actually LOVED that this spot is first come first serve. It was refreshing, reservation culture has gotten out of hand. The staff were all so friendly, we got seated quickly and chatted about Italy with our waiter (he's from Italy!). I recommend getting the cacio e Pepe - it comes in a cheese wheel and it's all over Instagram right now for good reason. The Austin pizza was also delicious. We subbed the sausage for chicken. Ambiance is cute and romantic - we sat on the patio. Parking is limited but the location is great. If you have a little wait you can walk around and come back read more

My husband and I stopped by and ordered a small pepperoni pizza with fries on top, chicken Parmesan, and a drink. Overall, we had a pleasant experience. The food was good and everything was prepared well, but it didn't really stand out. The pizza and chicken Parmesan were both enjoyable, although I've had better versions of them at other places. The service was friendly and everything went smoothly. Overall, it was a solid meal, just not one that left a lasting impression. read more

Numero 28 - Italian Near Me - Austin, Texas

When my girlfriend first visited me, she begged for us to go to Numero28, a small but authentic Italian restaurant in the 2nd Street District of downtown Austin. It was so good that the next time she visited, I told her we had to go back. This time, it was my choice. Both times were different experiences, though both great. Our first time, we went on a Saturday evening right before a show was taking place at ACL, so it was very busy. Since it was just the two of us, a space to sit outdoors had just opened up, and we jumped at the opportunity. She ordered an Aperol Spritz, and I ordered a Paloma Spritz. My girlfriend speaks Italian, so she was able to talk to our waiter fluently while I got to be the dumb boyfriend being babysat. I fear this will happen when we inevitably go to Italy as well... I ordered their Cacio e Pepe, and she ordered... something else that I don't remember. I was unaware that the Cacio e Pepe was served in a pecorino cheese wheel (though it says it on the menu), so when they brought out the block of cheese I was pretty surprised--and sad that they didn't give me the block of cheese to eat out of like a Panera bread bowl. The natural cheesiness that the pasta gains from being tossed in the pecorino with the hot pasta really makes it such an excellent dish. It's cooked al dente and was very flavorful and peppery. The next time we went, I ordered a Hugo while she stuck with her Aperol Spritz. We also shared an order of their Garlic Focaccia Bread with olive oil, which was very good. I once again got the Cacio e Pepe, with the show allowing me to truly enjoy them mixing the pasta in the pecorino. It was great once again. Our waiter this time was not fluent in Italian so my girlfriend couldn't flex her intelligence on me this time! I got to order our food. Aha! I wouldn't be surprised if we go back there soon the next time she visits. She better get back to Austin soon, or I'll be going back for another dose of cheese wheel pasta without her. Ate here randomly on our first night in Austin Was a group of 7 and they accommodated us outside on their patio We had 2 lovely servers , very helpful with the menu and attentive and friendly We shared the meatballs, arancini and salmon carpaccio- these were all decent but not enough flavor for me For pasta dishes we shared the special rigatoni with sausage and eggplant- this was excellent Parpadelle Bolognese- very good Cacio E Pepe- I like the way it was served in the pecorino wheel but too much cheese creamy flavor for my tastes Just a couple of minor issues like having to ask for serving spoons for dishes and main plates to eat on instead of the tiny appetizer plates but overall a nice experience here read more

numero28 has a very lovely and cozy ambiance, especially the outdoor seating area when the weather is nice. the service was also super friendly and fast, which made the experience pleasant overall. they have some good happy hour deals, but the margherita flatbread had a bit too much crust and not enough sauce, so it ended up tasting a little dry. the bolognese was somewhat bland and the pasta itself was slightly hard. the cacio e pepe felt a bit more gimmicky than anything and didn't really stand out flavor-wise. the cannelloni con funghi was heavy on the cheese and oil, though the flavors came through a bit better than the other dishes. we did get free cannolis for our birthday celebration, which was a really sweet gesture and definitely appreciated. overall, the vibes and service were good, but the food felt pretty mid for the price, so it's probably not somewhere i'd rush back to. read more

One of the best Italian restaurants in downtown Austin. Cute restaurant & the staff is friendly and welcoming. We tried both pasta & pizza and they were both excellent. They also have a great selection of wines, and best of all they serve Peroni on draft. Definitely recommend. read more

I ordered takeout and the food was awful. Everything tasted microwaved and definitely not worth the price. We ordered pasta, ravioli and a salad, it wasn't even hot so i'm assuming it definitely wasn't freshly made. The ravioli wasn't even crunchy it was soggy although we started eating 5 minutes after ordering. The salad dressing was super thick and impossible to get on the salad evenly and it was just straight up lettuce. This was an extremely disappointing experience I don't think i would recommend to anyone. read more

We came here during our vacation in Austin. It was walkable distance from our hotel and to surrounding bars that we were interested in going after! Service was quick and friendly. It felt like a mom and pop shop because customers were talking to all the staff and the atmosphere felt cozy. We ordered the Groppolo wine (crisp and light! We loved!) since it was Tuesday $25 deal. We also ordered the salad (decent), cacio e Pepe (too thick and creamy, and no flavor....we did not love this), and Numero28 pizza (FANTASTIC WE WERE OBSESSED). We would come here again! read more

Stop reading and come here! Lives the staff, recommendations, and wine list was a great one. Husband had meatballs and they were delicious so don't pass on that when it's flavorful and falls apart in your mouth. We also shared a pizza and salad and both were fantastic in texture and flavor. They were also accommodating when we asked for smoked prosciutto on half the pizza (I'm vegetarian). read more

We needed to grab a bite to eat before heading to a taping at ACL. The patio was crowded but luckily we got a spot. My friend had sunglasses and was willing to sit facing the sun. With that being said, they should invest in some sort of sun shade. There were other people affected by it and they didn't seemed pleased but had no other choice. ;) They brought a bottle of cold water which I also appreciate instead of constantly asking for more water. We each ordered a glass of wine and the arugula salad with chicken. We both enjoyed the salad. There is also inside seating but we didn't get a chance to peek inside. read more

We walked by this place a few times before finally stopping and trying it. If you are looking for authentic Italian food that is out of this world this is your place. We had the minestrone soup which was so good!!! The Margherita Pizza and the sauce was straight out of Italy. The raviolis were cooked to perfection and sauce complemented but didn't overwhelm and the pesto gnocchi. The waiter and all the staff were so attentive and the atmosphere was intimate and inAll of it was outstanding, in fact we went back for dinner. Go here. You won't be disappointed! read more

Had an ok experience at Numero 28 for dinner. The staff were very attentive and kind but the food was just so so. We started out with the bruschetta appetizer and the only word to describe the taste was bland. It was as if they forgot to season the whole dish. We then moved on the table side cacio e pepe, which was prepared in a large wheel of cheese. The unique presentation was interesting but again the flavor was just ok. It was a very rich dish and you'd think that anything made with butter, cheese and pasta would be a home run but alas not so much. The restaurant had indoor and outdoor space and was pretty busy. Second street is touristy so maybe volume trumps quality. If you're in the area and don't mind a run of the mill Italian experience, Numero 28 fits the bill but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there again. read more

I got food poisoned so badly here yesterday. We actually have loved this place for the great service and friendly atmosphere from the owners. The soups are always great, but I'll never be able to eat that white bean and tuna salad after what it did to my insides. I'm still brutally ill after a night of hell. Never again. I had this restaurant on my list for a while, so the anticipation to eat here was much desired, however I don't think it lived up to my expectations. ~The Cacio E Pepe was a 3/5, I was expecting so much more because I kept seeing the wheel of cheese videos and it looked so yummy. The pasta may have been a bit too al dente for me, I usually like my pasta more cooked, I know it's a bit different for people, but the experience was nice. :) ~ The prosciutto-mozzarella and the Arancina Vegetariana were my favorite, fresh nice ball of mozzarella and the prosciutto was good, few dry pieces but good. 4/5 The Arancina Vegetariana was nice and crispy with a great tomato flavor, does get soggy after a while so make sure to eat it quickly. 5/5 ~ The garlic flat bread basket, was simple, tasted like pizza crust IMO. It paired well with the tomato sauce of the Arancina vegetariana. 3/5 ~ The cannolis were decent, too much cream for the crust on the outside. 3/5 Staff was friendly, the food runners were nice, but I saw them more than my actual server, but that's okay food was delivered in a timely manner and prepped the way we ordered it. I do wish they had music playing that fit the vibe of the food. It felt oddly like a bar rather than an Italian restaurant. read more

We recently visited this new spot downtown with my wife and our two kids. It was our first time trying it, and overall, it was a really enjoyable family outing. The Food: We focused on their Italian offerings and decided to try the pizza. It definitely stood out from your typical pizza--you could tell the ingredients were high-quality and tasted truly "homemade" rather than mass-produced. It was very good. My son and daughter shared an order of fries, which kept them happy as well. The Drinks: My wife and I both really enjoyed our drinks. I went with a mimosa and she had the sangria; both were excellent and a great addition to the meal. read more

This place is cutely tucked away on second street, and is very homey! The food and service were both great, and they serve their cacio y pepe in the wheel of cheese as is traditional. My only complaint was the AC. We were there at around 5:30 on Memorial Day weekend, and between the heat outside and the kitchen, it was very warm in there. Overall, the food was great though! We had chicken Parmesan and the pasta bolognese (which was my favorite) along with a margarita pizza! Everything was fresh made in house per the host and you could taste it. read more

3.5 stars. I came here with a friend Tuesday evening for dinner, and was a little disappointed. we ordered cocktails, an appetizer and two entrees. The service was just not good. It took 3 minutes for our espresso martini (which was fabulous) but then 20 minutes for the gin fizz (which was good when it came). during the time waiting for the drink, our server avoided us like the plague. they then took our order, and everything came out at once. The calamari was cold, the bolognese was extremely greasy, but the chicken parm was good. after we expressed being done with our meal, our server dropped the bill despite us saying we were interested in dessert drinks (i realllllyyyy wanted to try that tiramisu martini) so we wound up paying and leaving. ultimately the drinks were great and the food was ok (when not cold), but the service made it a sub-par experience. read more

We walked by and stopped in after seeing Anjelah Johnson at the Moody theatre....it was about 30 mins to the kitchen closing so we ordered quick but man was our waiter terrible. He was "the real deal" from Italy but he had to be constantly reminded to get our drinks, did not understand half of what we were asking him. Was pretty rude to my husband when he had a question about the menu selections and did not ask if we would like coffee after dinner. They took in several other people after us and continued to keep the kitchen open so I don't think that was the issue....perhaps he was having an off day but I wish we went to North Italia instead. read more

Numero 28 specializes in authentic Neapolitan pizza, and they do it so well! I had the 12-inch Diavola pizza, which is topped with spicy salami and cut into 6 slices. The crust was soft and chewy and the ingredients tasted so fresh and high-quality. I even reheated my leftovers the next day in the oven and they held up beautifully. I also enjoyed a refreshing Hugo spritz. They have select brunch cocktails for $8 -- definitely check the brunch menu to see which ones are included (the Hugo spritz, sadly, is not). Good overall meal. The service all night was spot on. We were quickly seated and all the food and drinks came out as fast as I can remember. It was a warm summer evening so the Paloma spritz was a good way to start. It was crisp and had a decent kick. We did the bruschetta trio for an appetizer. One was the traditional tomato version that you see. The others were prosciutto and a ricotta version. The traditional was the best, the prosciutto had a splash of honey that was pretty tasty. We had a couple of pizzas, the Diavola and Austin. The diavola was standard and what you would expect, the flavors were good. The Austin was sausage, peppers and fresh jalapenos. Also very good flavors. My biggest piece of feedback on the pizzas was the crust good have been more crispy. The portions of the topping were good but the crust could not stand up to the tomato sauce. Dessert was pistachio gelato and an affogato with vanilla gelato. The gelato was real good with both, authentic and creamy. Again the service was great as the whole staff worked really well together to make sure everything was taken care of. Good experience and good food. read more

I came in on a Friday afternoon, around 12 PM or so. It is walking distance from City Hall. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating--the weather wasn't scorching so my colleague and I decided to eat outside. There weren't a lot of people dining in at this time so it didn't feel busy at all. Our server was super friendly, attentive and gave great suggestions for lunch time. I decided to order the "Prosciutto E Mozzarella Oven Baked Panini," which included Parma prosciutto ham, fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, arugula, and chipotle aioli. It was DELICIOUS--the panini wasn't too soft or overly pressed, and the combination of the panini ingredients was perfect. The mozzarella really did taste fresh and it gave a great balance between the saltiness of the prosciutto and the taste of the aioli. The panini also came with a side Caesar salad, making the entree a perfect amount of food for lunch. I highly recommend it!!! read more

Hate to give this place a 3 star but was really under impressed. I'll start by saying the staff was lovely, super friendly, helped guide with recommendations, and the atmosphere reminds me of a little Italian hole in the wall like if you were in Italy! The espresso martini was delicious, treated myself and added a scoop of gelato on top as well. The food is where the smile disappears. We had the caprese salad to start which was just okay, nothing to write home about. For my main I ordered what looked to be this incredible cacio e pepe scooped from a big cheese wheel. It really tasted like soupy water with a hint of cheese. There was hardly any flavor to it despite the big showing. read more
