I ordered a Bubs Italian hoagie. Italians are usually my go to sandwiches when trying a new spot. It was delicious! I can taste the freshness in every single ingredient used, including the bread. I went during the week at lunch time. It was pretty crowded but the line moved relatively quickly. Bring cash if you can! Will definitely go back to try some of their other sandwiches read more

We wanted to try this place out because it's one of those iconic places that we were opened to by the TV show Diners,Drive-Ins And Dives. It was a small but busy place that had a plethora of options to choose from. The food. We got a full Hebrew hammer and was able to split between two adults. It was pretty good. However I feel like the coleslaw took the taste over everything else. If you have two adults it's worth the money to split a full size compared to buying two halves. Food for though. (Pun intended) We also got a half streak and cheese. That all it was just steak and cheese and bread. If that's up your alley then go for it. For kids, the only option that was givin to me was the half loaf pizza. You could add Pepperonis for 2$ more or something like that. Which I felt was steep. We just got the cheese and it was 6$ not to bad. Then there was the chips... we were hungry right then and there so I thought chips no biggy. No. This bag of chips was 5$ . Way overpriced smh. All in all, if you go here, come for an appetite since you do get good size portions of what's on the menu. However, they do charge an arm, a leg, and your 3rd born for additional stuff so be aware. Since it is a small family owned business they prefer you have cash. It makes sense, however, with this day and age technology is on the rise. Not a bad place for a large sandwich. read more

Decided to try this place on a recent trip to DC. We were looking for a good sandwich shop and this place did not disappoint. The place is small with very little seating but it adds to the character and history of this place. The staff was very friendly and helpful. My wife and I ordered the large Philly Steak/Beef Sandwich ($18). The sandwich was delicious and plenty for both of us to split. The sandwich was amazing and very filling. I highly recommend this place if in the area- worth every penny! read more

Simply unmissable. I was in DC for 3 days and ate lunch here twice! On my first visit, the staff were so attentive and wanted to explain everything - not in a patronising way; it felt very genuine. The second time I needed less handholding, so it was speedy and efficient service. The Hebrew Hammer was incredible and I can't recommend it highly enough. A jewel in the heart of DC: friendly atmosphere, attentive, knowledgeable staff, and great food. What's not to like?! Tip: come with an appetite, as even the half sandwiches will leave you in a food coma read more

Came here on 3/16 to try out the sandwiches as I have heard and seen great things about this place! I first found out about this spot either on Man Vs Food or Bizarre foods with Andrew Zimmerman and I was so happy this was a local spot, close to my job too! The staff was super cool and my friend and I actually had a conversation with whom I believe to be the co-owners maybe? Very friendly people. We were running some after work errands, so decided to grab and go, but when I got home and ate my sandwich i was IN LOVE. I got the beef cheese steak and my friend got the chicken cheese steak. The half is more than enough to fill you up. But today I got a whole haha They won't really press you out to pay in cash, but it OS preferred. They also close at 8pm on Thursdays and Fridays. This is definitely going to be one of my new go to lunch spots. It's right next door to Ozio club btw read more

Alright, so it is no news that Bub and Pop's is absolutely delicious and arguably the best sandwich spot downtown, if not in DC. My go to options there are the chicken parm and the beef cheese steak, hoagie style (with arugula, tomatoes, and relish) without the thousand island dressing (and added mushrooms, of course!). The big question is if you want a half or whole sandwich which you can answer by determining if you want leftovers or not. You are almost guaranteed two full meals if you go for the whole (unless you are super, super hungry). If you are lucky enough, you will be there when there is still bread pudding available. It is delicious! Eat it with your sandwich or, if you're already feeling too full, take it home for a late night treat. Now, for what makes Bub and Pop's special- the owners, especially Arlene. These are true Philadelphians from northeast Philly. They're super kind and always happy to have a great conversation. They are one of the main reasons I love going back. read more

So our first time there. The young lady that took our order at the window was great. Very friendly and informative. I got the shrimp sub. I really enjoyed my sandwich. My girlfriend got the brisket sub. Hers wasn't very good. The bun was very soggy. She had a few bites and that was enough for her. We ordered the pickles. They were ok, not sure they were worth almost $7 but they were ok. We also got a half cup of coleslaw. It was almost $3 and it was very small but very good. read more

Once you walk in it smells like an Italian deli. The place encourages cash payment since it is a small business. Most of everything is homemade and that is spectacular. I got the half a Hebrew hammer and that was filling on its own. I am not usually fan of cole slaw but this is an exception. The spicy brown mustard adds a kick but it can be a bit much. Overall, amazing and I need to go back and try other sandwiches. read more

This is, by a huge margin, the best sandwich shop in the DC area. The chef is really a chef, and he makes great big messy glorious masterpieces of taste and substance. They are not just huge, they are thoughtful, creative even. And Arlene out front is a warm, wonderful woman. Ignore the people who bitch about her. They are the just the self-centered, thin-skinned soys who have grown more common than rats in DC. I'm amazed any of them would step into Bub and Pop's. Arlene is a human Rorschach test: if you dislike her, get counseling. If your boyfriend dislikes her, dump him. read more

Best sandwiches in DC. Roast pork sandwich...great. Chicken parm...great. Jewish jawn with pastrami, slaw and horseradish...great. DC not a great sandwich town but Bub and Pops is great. Philly worthy sandwiches from a Philly native chef. Plan a trip to DC just for their food. Not kidding. I have 2x in last 2 months. Can't decide what to order? Order 2 sandwiches and eat both. Again, seriously. You won't regret it. Only warning they sometimes close early (always after lunchtime) when they get slow and post about this on their Facebook page to notify potential customers. read more

Oh my god, the sandwiches here are DELICIOUS! We both got a half sandwich each and were totally stuffed by the time we finished them. The sandwiches are fully loaded so it gets a bit messy but there are lots of napkins to take care of that. We had the chicken parmesan and the al capone. We couldn't decide which we like more since they were both so good. The lady who owns the shop is a total gem as well. The walls have pictures of the shop over the years and of her family members. The place is like a local institution. I would highly recommend you drop by for some mouthwatering sandwiches and a great experience overall! read more

I ordered a half-order of The Philly Special and it was outstanding. Served warm, it was full of flavor and made me wish I had a full sandwich. I consider myself something of a sandwich connoisseur. I could eat them all day long. It seems like such a simple food, but there's so many things to get right: which ingredients to use, the quality of the ingredients, the proportions of the ingredients. So when I hear about a sandwich shop making these unique combinations and making dressings and pickles in house, it grabs my attention. I walked in on MLK Day and I ordered two half sandwiches. First, I got the Italian with Genoa salami, prosciutto, capicola, pepperoni, provolone, arugula, roma tomatoes, hoagie relish, Bub's vinaigrette, and a pile of shredded Pecorino Romano. I believe mayo has no business on an Italian sandwich, so that had to go. The quality of the bread was amazing, it was soft and it had some real flavor to it. If anything, just a little crunch on the outside would have put it over the top. The sandwich has all the right meats, in other words, no regular ham (Thank God!). I loved the addition of the Romano cheese too. It's different, but the smokiness works so well against the sweetness of the vinaigrette. But to me, the star is the hoagie relish (hot peppers, sweet peppers, pickle & onion). They keep it on the condiment table with sliced red onion, hoagie relish, sweet peppers, and hot peppers. Plus bottles of ketchup and hot sauce. I added a couple more spoonfuls of relish to the Italian for some extra zip. I also had the Jewish hoagie with corned beef, brisket, kosher salami, Swiss cheese, spicy mustard, thousand island, and slaw. Normally, it would have roast turkey, but they had run out, so they gave me extra of the other meats. I only wish it had pastrami. The sandwich had great flavor, but had a lot of slaw. I took a little bit off and just ate it on the side. It was so impressive that as stuffed as these two sandwiches were, the bread did not fall apart. I don't know what one of those last reviewers is talking about with the bread getting soggy. I'm also a big pickle fan. I got their housemade kosher dill pickle chips. For two dollars, I got a small plastic cup filled with pickle juice and some very flavorful pickles. But I was fishing out the actual pickles from the sliced garlic and the fresh dill. Very good quality. The two half sandwiches with the pickles and a drink cost me $26, which is pretty fair for downtown DC. The food was so good that I can't imagine coming back to DC and not having a sandwich or two here. I am still anxious to try the cheesesteak and the bolognese Parmesan. read more

This, my friends, is a superior sandwich. I'd rank the Italian on par, at least, with a Central Grocery muffuletta, and i don't say that lightly. The abundance of thin sliced onion, the perfect blend of quality meats and peppers and cheese, the sprinkle of good parm--it's amazing the heights a humble sandwich can reach when someone puts real care into it. read more

I've only been here once, a few months ago, and I've been craving the fried shrimp sandwich (The Rich Boy) I had ever since! Even the half size was gigantic, and simply piled high with piping hot pieces of perfectly fried shrimp. The half size was only $10 and comes with fried shrimp, arugula, roma tomato, Kosher dill pickle, sweet peppers & mayo. Seriously, my mouth is watering as I type this. Word of warning, this place gets bussyyyy! We arrived a little bit after lunchtime on a weekday and it was still difficult to find a place to sit. I think your best bet would be to plan on taking your order to-go. They have a large menu with so many fantastic options. I know I should try something new when I go again, but I really can't stop thinking about that shrimp... I can't wait to go back! read more

I have visited this location on 2 occasions and I must say it's the best sandwich I have had in the DC Area. They have two options, half and whole. Half is for 1 person. Whole is for 2 people. 1. Rich boy was the most memorable. Great flavors from the sauce and fried perfectly 2. Italian was very good Loved the cuts of meat at the correct ratio as the pickles onions and peppers. Great sandwich well composed. 3.Pop's Beef Brisket.- good but not as much flavor as the other two options in my opinion. I would come back again anytime I'm in the area. Parking is tough and would call before I come to reduce the wait time inside the store. read more

If you're looking for a sandwich the size of your entire head and some truly delicious fried potatoes, then Bub & Pop's is right up your alley. We saw Bub & Pop's on the Food Network and added it to our must-try list. We decided to hit it up on my birthday after visiting a museum, and we ordered: Brisket Hoagie (+ a fried egg) The Jewish Hoagie Pop's Potatoes The sandwiches are enormous (no, seriously, just order a half because there's no way you'll be able to eat a whole), filled with high quality products, and served on delicious bread. My husband didn't love the brisket hoagie, but that was largely due to personal taste and nothing against the product itself. The Jewish Hoagie, stuffed with salami, turkey, brisket, and pastrami, Swiss cheese, thousand island, spicy mustard, and coleslaw, was a fork and knife sort of sandwich (I couldn't even come close to closing it up). I ate the entire thing, free of guilt or regret, and I would absolutely order it again and again and again. The potatoes were perfectly cooked and crisp (not to mention hot!) and covered in freshly grated cheese. Tell me that's not exactly what you want all day, every day. Insider tip: bring cash because they prefer it over cards! read more

YUCK! The worst dirty and rudest place I've ever been . The health dept needs a call. They blamed google for their menu not being accurate.

The Grinders are good but there's too much of everything on them IMO. The ordering is such that you have to tell them what you don't want on the sandwich. The woman taking my order seemed annoyed and told me "this isn't subway". The turkey and provolone was swimming in vinaigrette. Not the best experience. Tried twice but won't be back. read more

Came here from the recommendation of a local and I was not disappointed! The owner Arlene was there and she was super helpful and willing to explain basically everything on the menu and what toppings would go with the sandwich we ordered. Sometimes they sell out of a certain sandwich and they'll write it on the board in the shop. They'll also write down whatever specials they have for the day on a paper attached to the board Half sandwich is definitely enough and I considered getting another to take home but the meat was juicy and the bread would've got too wet. The Gouda and fried egg took this sandwich to the next level! The meat was juicy and had a decent amount of flavor but my favourite part of the whole thing was definitely the bread! So nice and soft on the inside while ever so slightly crisp on the outside absolutely heavenly! Would definitely go again- all the sandwiches on the menu look great! Only reason for the 4 stars was the sandwich price. Half sandwich is $10 not including tax. Drinks are $1.50-$3 and chips are $2. I think this might be typical of DC prices but I thought they were a bit high. Love mom and pop small shops so definitely go here and support small businesses! read more

Came here because guy fieri was here. It's a small space but there is plenty of seating (the decor is also super cool). The line can get long at lunch time but it went by really fast and the woman behind the counter (Bub) was helpful and efficient. We got the chicken parmesan and it was delicious! the chicken is super juicy and the bread is like crispy garlic bread. this was also really good with some hot and sweet peppers (that they offer for free by the soda machines). the sandwiches are a bit pricey here (about 20 with tax) but the portions are big and the food is quality. I also recommend you bring cash to help support this local business :) read more

Saw that they were on the "Guy Fieri Show" in which Guy Fieri tries out foods from various restaurants. Guy Fieri, who is the Mayor of Flavortown and for all intents and purposes seems like a good guy that I would like to hang out with, recommended it so I too decided to give it a shot. Guy, who was born in Columbus Ohio, enjoys collecting classic American cars and is a gosh darn American treasure, was as usual CORRECT in his assessment of Bub and Pop's. I loved their homemade chips and cheesesteak and if I wasn't paranoid about my admittedly high cholesterol would eat this twice if not three times a week. Cannot recommend enough. read more

Honestly the best sandwich I have ever had in my life. I'm a vegetarian and I FOREVER will mourn the loss of the Bulgarian feta sandwich. Literally the most amazing thing I have ever consumed. Best sandwich on the planet - and I have been all over! Meatball sub was just amazing. My adult kids felt the same!

Let me just tell you, it does not get any better. The line is long. The place is small. The food is amazing. Be prepared to pay in cash, or bub will politely tell you about the fees she has to pay with a credit card (but will then take it). I've had the Jewish hammer and the Italian. Both were great. I preferred the Italian (the hammer had a touch too much mustard for me, as I'm not a huge mustard fan to begin with). The Italian was perfect in every way. Highly recommend this place if you're ever in DC. Go on off hours though, or be prepared for a long line (that moves relatively quickly). read more
