I've always wanted to check out this sandwhich shop after seeing it on diners, drive in's, and dives. Wow! I'll absolutely be coming back to try everything else on the menu. I'd put this cheesesteak up with any of the heavy hitters in Philly. The bread was incredible. I should have waited a few minutes after I unwrapped up, it was pipping hot. If Bub & Pop's cheesesteak sandwich was a person, I would get naked and sleep with it! That is how good this sandwich is! And HUGE! I was warned that it was on the big side so I shared it with someone but I really wanted to push my friend out the window so I could eat his half too. The sandwich is superb! The bread is soft but strong - and it adds its own flavor to the sandwich too. The filling is so juicy and cheesy and onion-y!!! The peppers - almost too much to bear but somehow I did. Food was not good. The "Real Obama" sandwich was described as a beef brisket, however, it was more like ground beef or that type of meat you'd find in a philly cheese steak. You can find pictures on their yelp page from other people. They added a ton of vinaigrette to it, which both made the bread soggy, and I'm being serious here - I was eating it next door at the middle eastern place (since Bub's doesn't have indoor seating), and someone across the room there said my vinaigrette was hurting their eyes. Their service was really great though. The kid at the front taking orders was super nice and professional. Hence the 2 stars vs 1. Honestly I can't believe this place doesn't have a higher rating, which is saying something given that they're around 4.4 stars right now. I ordered a half chicken Parmesan sandwich ($12). Unless you eat like Michael Phelps, half is probably enough! I could barely finish it and I consider myself a pretty big eater. The sandwich is excellent, one of the best I've had. The bread was sturdy, with a little crunch and a lot of flavor. It survived a fifteen-minute walk to the park in excellent condition. Each side was painted with either marinara or pesto. I was surprised by the pesto but it actually worked really well! Enveloped by all these ingredients was a gargantuan pile of breaded and fried chicken. Each piece was tender and quite flavorful. They could have sold the chicken for $25 if they plopped it on a plate with some pasta. But lucky for us, they put it in an even tastier setting and charged less money for it. This sandwich oozed hot and cheesy deliciousness from start to finish. The subs were amazing, i got the Italian and it was packed with meat. There was fresh Parmesan cheese and it had an oil on the sandwich that was so good. This sandwich shop has been on the "need to try" list for a while. I was in Dupont at the Phillips Collection and decided since I was hungry I would walk over and get a sandwich. Some of the menu items 1230 were already sold out and covered over. I decided on the roast beef with everything except tomatoes. Order number 22. I paid in cash and stood to wait. Before too long a short line forms and sandwiches are coming out one after another. My order comes up and I sit in the small entry area next to the shop where there are a few tables and chairs. First off the sandwich is good size. Fresh bread and paper thin onions on top. The meat is generously sliced and seasoned well, not too much dressing or heat. Everything is fresh and tasty. It's called Bub and Pop's but it's my favorite mom and pop shop in the area. Some bomb ass sandwiches that punch their weight class, and one of the most solid cheesesteaks in DMV. Nowadays they're only open during lunch hours 5 days a week, but pretty much giant hoagie style sandwiches cold and hot. They had a roast pork sandwich that's pretty killer as well as the cold cuts. I'm a big fan of the cheesesteak though - nice melty provolone cheese, meat is well seasoned, and their soft rolls can hold up all those amazing juices from the flat top without breaking apart. They also have other great side offerings, from special pickles of the day to Philly ice (you can get spiked too!). They also have a limited availability for premiere dining from Chef Jon. I haven't had time to try that yet but it looks amazing. Pro tips: follow them on Facebook or sign up for their email list to see their specials. Tried Bub and Pops after walking by many many times. I asked many questions to figure out what to order and the employees were super kind and helpful. I ended up getting the turkey hoagie (a favorite of mine), and it was one of the most interesting turkey sandwiches I've ever had. And certainly one of the largest! The relish and vinaigrette elevated the sandwich so much, making the messiness of it completely worthwhile. The star of the show, however, is the bread. Their homemade bread is incredible!!! I get the hype for this place! I was glad I read through some reviews because there are a couple important things to note. First, you do not need a whole hoagie. Not sure who is able to eat a whole one unless they are sharing or intentionally want left overs. We got a 1/2 chicken Parmesan and 1/2 chicken salad. Both were very good, we did no peppers and no tomato on the chicken salad. We both felt full after eating them but not grossly full. Second, call ahead for your food. It will save on wait time. There are a few outdoor tables in the street parklet but otherwise you're just waking up to the window to order so save the time and call ahead. NOT traditional hoagie roll as owner claims. NOWHERE do they state that their rolls are studded with sesame seeds. A sesame allergy sometimes can cause a severe reaction called anaphylaxis and death. Cheesesteak is also twice the price it should be. Additionally they force you to get fried onions, but don't even fully fry them on the grill. I guess no one from South Philly ever visits here, because they would give scathing reviews. I had a religious experience while eating this cheesesteak. Brought me right back to my first ever cheesesteak from another ex-Philadelphian chef in the Plains, VA. Just like that one, this is pure and classic perfection. Tender ribeye chopped so fine it melts in your mouth. The perfect amount of American sharp makes the sandwich so moist you'd never dream of ruining it with mayo or ketchup. The sesame roll is the perfect contrast and holds up strong under the heavy steak. A goddamn 10/10, this guy is doing god's work in DC. read more

Where I come from, this is a staple and only contains bread, chicken, sauce, and cheese, the way it should. Adding another huge flavor element, that was salty as well, just made me disinterested. So why five stars, Joe? Well, the 1/2 fried chicken cutlet sandwich made it on a list of my top five favorite sandwiches ever. Yes, it was that good. The chicken cutlets (probably the same on the chicken parm) were perfectly executed, the onions, tomatoes, Mayo, vinaigrette, etc etc came together into a perfect combination. They no longer let you into the restaurant. As I found out while standing in the pouring rain at lunchtime. You must order from window. All sandwiches appear to be $12 for a half and $24 for a whole. Seems a bit lazy that they do not different on price regardless of the ingredients- that somehow seems lazy to me. They also no longer offer cheesesteaks. The girl at the window said they just couldn't make any money on them because the meat was so expensive. That seemed silly because where else is a cheesesteak $24? I tried the Brisket and Eggplant Parmesan hoagies. They add surcharge if you pay with credit card. An expensive deli for sure!With a nice tip I spent over $60 bucks for two sandwiches a no drinks - no chips. A fool and his money are soon parted...( I could hear my father's voice...) Both sandwiches were tasty no complaints on flavor and I'll probably come back to try the Italian hoagie and the Hebrew hammer. It is a quirky spot for sure located on a block with a couple of strip joints.
