Definitely a place worth trying in Dupont! We tried the Hebrew Hammer and the Philly Special. The Philly Special was really good - I thought the flavors worked really well together, even though the broccoli rabe was pretty bitter, and the roast pork in particular was delicious. It was super super oily though, but that may not be an issue if you eat it faster (I had to walk home with it). The Hebrew Hammer was also good but because there is so much crammed in, you can't really get all the flavors in one bite unless you have a big mouth (all the sauce is on one side while the coleslaw is on the other side). But it's definitely a filling lunch! One thing is that they don't have inside seating - they do have some seats outside but it's not ideal in the winter - so I did have to take it home, although I think the sandwiches may have tasted better if eaten fresh. read more

PS- I originally gave a 2star review; but when I received my roast sandwich, it was not cooked...at all. I asked the cashier if they would heat it; she said it was a health hazard. The Roast Turkey sandwich was really good. $18 and some change after tax. Although that's kind of high for a sandwich, you are downtown and the sandwich is very filling and very flavorful definitely worth the money. I went about 12:30 PM on a Tuesday and the wait was only 10 minutes. The only thing I think could be better is the customer service. I have been thinking about trying this place since I moved here and finally, 5 and a half years later, got around to it. I think the only thing that was stopping me was knowing how big the portions are, but they do offer half sandwiches. I got Bub's Italian Hoagie with everything on it. It was DELICIOUS. So many incredible flavors. My only complaint, which is not really a complaint, is that it was too full that it was difficult to eat. I will definitely return and order the same sandwich. There are a ton of signs in the front saying they prefer cash. I will make sure to have cash next time I go, and I will also order my sandwich without mayo. I was in the area so I had to check out one of the most famous sandwich shops in DC. I was debating between the italian hoagie (their most famous) and the rich boy (their take on shrimp po boy) but I was in the mood for shrimp that day and Im so glad I got the rich boy. For $10, this sandwich is a totally a bang for your buck when it comes to quality. The sandwich was completely loaded with freshly fried shrimp. I've been a couple of times because it's dangerously close to my office, and I can say with certainty that these are some of the best sandwiches in DC. My favorite is the Italian Hoagie, which comes loaded with Genoa salami, prosciutto, capicola, pepperoni, aged provolone, arugula, hoagie relish, mayo, Bub's vinaigrette, and pecorino romano. I usually get the full size sando and eat half for lunch and save the other half for dinner or lunch the next day. I've also had the chicken parm and it is decadent and very very filling. During our trip to Washington DC, we visited this restaurant, and it quite possibly might be the best one we've been to in a long time. We now understand why it's considered a top 10 place for Italian subs. The food was outstanding. I cannot find any complaints except for the lack of indoor seating, but there's nothing to be done about that. We ordered the Italian sub, and it was absolutely delicious. Despite being warm, it felt remarkably fresh, and the taste was exceptional. There's nothing more I could say about it. We did have to wait for about 10 to 15 minutes to receive our food, but it was well worth the wait. All three of our Italian subs were perfect. Attempted to do so again today at 11:20 AM but was informed (through a window counter facing M St) by two 20-something female employees that the dining room was closed, so the only options were takeout or outdoor dining (the temperature today is 95 degrees). I told them that neither of those options appealed to me. (I don't mind paying $25 for a tasty sandwich, but I will not eat it on the street or sidewalk.) I was excited to check out this place while on a short trip in DC. Came on a pretty cold day and was surprised to see that it's only dine outside or take out. I completely understand what the sub shop, they can get pretty busy. I got the whole Italian and the salt and pepper french fries. I sat outside at one of the tables. I'll be completely honest my sub was pretty messy. It was pretty hard to eat and I normally have no problem with this, but the issue was that all the ingredients were segmented. The oil and vinegar and spices were on top of the sandwich that stuck to the paper. Therefore, most of that flavor was lost throughout the sandwich. The mayonnaise was in the middle of the sandwich but not only the ends of it. Therefore it was lacking any flavors when I first took my couple bites and at the end. This is a huge sandwich I suggest getting a half even if you are splitting it. The cheese was very good. I'm a big cheese person so I like the strong flavor. But if you're not used to a strong cheese, it's maybe a little tough for you to take. The meats were very fresh and also very delicious. There are restaurants in DC that everyone always recommends as a "must eat". Locals will say, "You must stop in at Ben's Chili Bowl and get a 1/2 smoke with their famous chili" and "Be sure to get a jumbo slice of pizza while out and about in the Adams Morgan neighborhood". Or my favorite, "be sure to stop in at the Florida Ave. Grill and get some breakfast with their homemade corn bread." Eh, I've done all three of these things, and generally find these culinary experiences to be super overrated. But the one dining experience that I'm in agreement with DC denizens, is to stop in at Bub and Pop's for one of their mouth watering sandwiches. Bub and Pop's has been operating in DC for 60+ years, so they've survived while other trendy sandwich shops have come and gone. *cough* Taylor Gourmet * Cough Fans of Bub and Pop's have their favorites, but I'm partial to the "Pop's Beef Brisket". First of all, unlike at some joints, the sandwiches here are ginormous. The brisket is slowly braised for a couple of hours to the point where it nearly melts in your mouth. It is sliced paper thin and layered on a hoagie roll and then topped with shavings of 5-year aged Gouda cheese. Give it a dip in Veal Au-jus before serving and you have almost the perfect meal. I often opt to have the Veal jus on the side, but that's just my preference. Also be sure to get some of the house condiments like sweet peppers and sinus clearing horseradish to enhance the sandwich. At $20, this is not a cheap meal option, but it's still a good value for the quality and quantity of food. In the Spring and Summer, it's nice to get a meal to go and take the short walk to DuPont Circle and eat near the fountain while people watching. All in all, Bub and Pop's is one of the few "DC Must Eats" that I agree with, and after all these years, they must be doing something right. read more

My brother and girlfriend ordered first and Bub was a bit...terse whenever they asked any questions. This rubbed them the wrong way. When the hubby and I ordered, I thought she was perfectly fine! She definitely is a straight shooter and you can tell she's no nonsense. I wouldn't say she was like the soup nazi (for my Seinfeld fans), but she could be his cousin, lol. My brother and his girlfriend got the Bub's Italian Hoagie and a Chicken Parmesan hoagie. The hubby got the Fried Chicken Cutlet Hoagie (special of the day). I got the soup special of the day - creamy tomato with pecorino romano, pesto and croutons (fancy way to say tomato bisque) and the fish hoagie. Let me just say, dayum! The food was off the hook, especially my fancily named tomato bisque. All the hoagies were PACKED with meat, every thing was well seasoned and the meat to bread ratio was perfect. My soup was the star of the show, the croutons that were included in the soup were crunchy, FLAVORFUL and could be served on their own. Arlene, the owner who I've met several times in the restaurant before was just as sweet and professional over the phone as she is in real life. She walked me through several of her favorite options and suggestions on what would work for an office crowd. I placed my order and she called back to confirm. The person who delivered the sandwiches (I think it might have been Pop!) was so sweet and so proud to tell me about the restaurants 4.5 star rating with 747 reviews. My team's faces lit up when they saw the selection of sandwiches that were delivered (I went with the hot sandwich selection because hot sammies are ALWAYS better than cold!). The Philly (porchetta with broccoli rabe) was melt in your mouth delicious, the eggplant parmesan perfectly cooked and gooey, and the cheesesteaks, perfecto. I have been an avid fan/supporting of Bub and Pops since 2015 and continue to make decent sized orders during the current pandemic. One of the joys in life is when you love something so much and that love is returned; with Bub and Pops each sandwich and soup returns that love and more. Below are some of my favorite menu items that you need to order (be bold, don't just order a cheese steak or chicken parmesan sandwich, even if they are both extremely good as well): Sandwiches 1.The Philly Special (previously known as the Roast Pork) - This is my go to sandwich on the menu. I can't seem to get enough of Chef Jon's Porchetta, the way the meat is prepared just melts in your month. Add to that the perfectly sautéed broccoli rabe with aged provolone and you have a sandwich fit for a trick super bowl winning play. The default is to have the sandwich come with hot cherry peppers, but I like to keep those off my sandwich like Flea keeps his shirt off. 2.The Hebrew Hammer (previously known as the Jewish Hoagie) - This is the ultimate bang for your buck on the menu as you get not 1, not 2, but 3 meats on your sandwich!!! The corned beef, roast turkey, and beef brisket play perfectly off each other to orchestrate a perfect symphony on your taste buds. The Swiss cheese is also grade A and the coleslaw on top is the only way to top off a behemoth like this thing. I'm actually not normally a fan of coleslaw, but I could eat this coleslaw all day!!! The final kick is the spicy mustard, which if not to your liking, you can always ask to leave off. 3.Pop's Beef Brisket (previously known as Pop's Beef Brisket) - This for me is another old reliable. When I'm feeling a little bit unsure of what to pick, I know that ordering a Pop's Beef Brisket with a fried egg will put a smile on my face and happiness in my stomach. The slow braised brisket on this sandwich is so good it'll make you cry. The horseradish and sharp provolone are the perfect complements, but the underrated part of this sandwich is the veal jus, it takes this thing to another level! Finally you have to get the fried egg on this sandwich or you just aren't doing it right. 4.Fried Chicken Cutlet Hoagie - This sandwich is the most underrated sandwich on the menu, much like Oscar Robertson is underrated in the discussion of the greatest basketball players of all time. Like the Big O, this sandwich is a walking triple double. It has a double meat component, with perfectly fried chicken cutlets and mouthwatering bacon. The triple threat of mayo, provolone and hoagie relish top off the slam dunk on your taste buds. 5. Chicken Salad Hoagie - Chicken salad, much like coleslaw, is something that I normally do everything in my power to avoid consuming, but this chicken salad can be backed up and dumped into my mouth any time. They also give you the option of having this sandwich toasted, which I would definitely take advantage of because that toasting is what the phone booth is to Clark Kent, it turns this thing into a super sandwich! Soups - While Bub and Pops is top notch at making the sandwiches, they are also probably one of the best soup shops in DC as well! 1. DC Clam Chowder - This chowder puts to shame an entire region of the United States because this clam chowder is hands down the best that I've ever eaten, you heard that right New England, up your chowda game! The white wine & blush sauce is what makes it so special and separates it from all other chowders. I can say one of my favorite parts of the calendar turning to October is I know that the DC Clam Chowder will be back on the menu at Bud and Pops. I would highly recommend getting a quart of this chowder for leftovers throughout the week because it only gets better with time, much like Dame Helen Mirren. 2. Creamy Tomato Soup - This creamy tomato soup looks Campbell's Soup right in the eye and kicks down the door as the king of tomato soups. What makes this soup so special is the flavorful pesto, pecorino romano and ricotta cheese that are included. The combination of these three ingredients to the already great soup is a threesome that would make Alexandre Dumas very proud. 3. Chicken Noodle Soup - Once again a classic soup taken to another level by Chef Jon. This soup sticks to all of the classic chicken noodle soup ingredients, but they are all taken to a level of 10! The noodles and vegetables used are both top notch as you come to expect of Bub and Pops and the broth makes this thing scream like Steven Tyler in the climax of Dream On. read more

I've been here before and today I paid cash for a half eggplant parm sandwich. I get that baked subs take longer, but I waited a full 25 minutes without a heads up and it's 40 degrees outside. Common courtesy would be to give a heads up about the wait time. I would have gone inside to wait somewhere else. Cole Slaw puts it over the top and would recommend getting it on the side if getting it to go. The fried Chicken Cutlet Hoagie is substantial. Just the right amount of breading for the cutlet & would recommend getting it with everything as all the ingredients play nicely together. The Brisket was very good-definitely add the egg. The whole (large) size is huge but this is the way to go for sharing. Ordering was easy and they are quite accommodating (i.e. topping on the side, order ahead before Porchetta sells out) as well service minded.
