Lemon coconut roll, green onion roll

Everything we had was delicious! The egg tarts were eaten before I could take pictures, the rolls are yummy, the pineapple buns are great. The surprise for us was the Mexican Bun! It was so yummy with extra fluffy bun and not so sweet crusty layer. Will be back again!

Not sure what I ordered but it was good

Oh my goodness what a sweet little bakery. If you are in the West side of SF this is the place to go to get a quality breakfast. Service is very nice and the person behind the counter is very sweet. No pun intended. If you are a coffee fan you are getting stuff that rivals the best donut shop in the city. Second to none, however I am not a coffee fan and all I can see is the fact locals in the area like it. At first I thought it was only HK bread but they offer Taiwanese bread. Found out because some people have TW accents. Prices are good and they beat the notorious sogo bakery. Mind blown, who knew. I never liked Sogo bakery and this place came to the rescue. Will come again if possible. Note: Not sure how they do large orders but I saw 0 pink boxes. Really want to get that large order in some day.

We meet again! Your taro pineapple buns are still always the best in town. I happen to get there before closing and the lady always trying to sell me the store. Egg tarts are also fire!

Baked Goods

Chinese Bakeries in San Francisco have been around for almost 100 years with the oldest and most famous bakery, Eastern Bakery, located in SF Chinatown on Grant Avenue. Needless to say, each neighborhood with a fair sized Asian population, or Asian Strip Mall, will likely have an Asian usually Chinese bakery. The middle? Sunset Area is no exception as it has Boss Bakery to supply less sweet baked goods to its clients. My better half and I wandered into Boss Bakery after having lunch across the street. You can never have enough fresh baked goods at home to satisfy that baked good hunger. BB is a small shop with most items individually wrapped in plastic bags and the warmer items like Custard Tarts and Coconut Pineapple Tarts sitting in the warmer where the clerk will retrieve and bag individually. We selected a few recognizable items which have become mainstays at all Chinese Bakeries: - Pork Sung Bau (a little too much Mayo for my wife), - Lo Pau or Old Wife Cookie (a bit dry with not much melon flavor), - Green Onion Bun (needed more green onion and a little more salt), - the two Tarts (the crust did not hold up on the Custard Tart while the Custard consistency and taste were spot on, the second tart's filling was dry needing tea to help swallow), and a - Pineapple Custard Bun (the outer crust flaked off at first bite and the inner custard had more of a jelly than custard consistency to it). All the items were a little off while the prices were reasonable. The help is non-existent as the clerk leaves the items on the tray to bag yourself after checking out and collecting your cash - their COVID protocol?!? Overall: Passable but we'll likely go elsewhere for our baked goods.

I came across this bakery while next door at Duke's hardware store. Craving some sweet carbs, and ready for a long drive back to LA, I strolled in to pick up some items. All of their pastries were on display, and I just tell the cashier what I wanted, she grabs it for me ... simple! I got a few taro puffs, pineapple buns and egg tarts. They were all taken from a glass large cabinet (for freshness I assume). The texture on all those were flaky and smelled fresh. Unfortunately, everything I tasted were on the bland side. They all were in need of more sugar and some indication of what I'm eating. The taro had a great texture and consistency, but if I were blind folded, I wouldn't be able to tell what it is I'm eating. The same goes for the egg tarts. The pineapple buns were soft and fresh, but again ... no flavor. They resembled plain bread, and the only subtlety was the sweetness from the dough itself. Though everything I bought appeared fresh, the flavors were very lacking. Sad to say this is a 2.5 for me.

Comes in the classic pink box!

Amazing bakery with a kind shop owner. After 4pm, it's buy 2 pastries get 1 free! Such a steal for good quality Chinese baked goods.

This is a nice little asian bakery in the outer sunset that has your a lot of the essentials! Service is very nice. I usually see the same girl working; she is very friendly and willing to help you out. She can speak both english and cantonese which is good for the area's customers. Currently for safety, they have a couple items on display but the employee will help you get a warm, fresh one from behind the counter once you decide what you want. I would say the prices are fair/ average compared to other places. The baked goods were very tasty and perfect for a snack. Just a tip, I believe they are cash only right now. Note that this is a small bakery and it does not sell cakes, just buns and small items. If you're around the Noriega area, this is a good place to stop by for a carbful bakery craving!

Exhibit A: pineapple bun fully stuffed from wall to wall with bbq pork that is well-worth the price! Be a boss!
Michael Y.

I'm thoroughly impressed! Their pineapple buns with bbq pork were fully filled, and their bread prices are very well priced for individual ones that cost only a little over a $1 (c. 12/2019)! If you take a look at my picture, Exhibit A, then you can see how I got full just after this one! It has a ton of filling from side to side, and that is actually not too common and is impressive. They also have a few classic buns along with a few unique ones like a taro turnover-shaped bun - also filled with a ton of stuffing! Also, for a goods deal, check out their specials close to closing! That's my money-saving tip! The server or owner was also very nice as she told us that and returned every thank you in kind!

Banh Mi Vietnamese Sandwich

Add this new Asian bakery to the endless array of existing mediocre ones throughout Chinatown, the Sunset and the Richmond. I didn't find anything particularly "wrong" with Boss, but I didn't discover anything particularly outstanding about it either. I came specifically to check out the fresh bread rolls, which I heard were baked on the premises for their Banh Mi sandwiches. They were indeed fresh and soft, but I've had much better Banh Mi sandwiches in many other places. I ordered their Special Banh Mi (#1). The "cold cuts" of pork seemed skimpy, though the veggie fillings of carrots, etc. were fresh and crispy. Unless I was on Noriega craving a Banh Mi on the spot, I'd go elsewhere. Unfortunate, since they seem to tout their Banh Mi sandwiches as one of their specialty items. There is a vast selection of traditional Chinese pastries, including the classic Chinese Egg Tarts. I was able to snag a super fresh one still on the baking tray, that they hadn't yet placed into the bins. The egg filling itself was really pretty good, and on par with the ones I've had at the infamous "stand in a 30 minute line Golden Gate Bakery," but the crust was sorely lacking. It was definitely a fresh tart, but you could never tell from the crust that seemed to lack even one layer of flakiness. The crust is fifty percent of an egg tart, and one of the features that many people look most forward to, and for some, even more so than the egg filling itself. So, I guess it's back to standing in an endlessly long line at the Golden Gate Bakery. Also tried the Coconut Rice Cake, which had a nice sweet texture. However, the crust, which I imagine could've been at least somewhat crisp, was soft and not at all crisp, even at the edgings. I'm assuming the softness of the crust was more than likely because it came displayed inside a plastic wrap. Originally, I planned on also getting the Pandan Coconut Rice Cake, as well as one of the other durian pastries for a friend, but I'm glad I passed, after a disappointing try with the Coconut Rice Cake. I'm always excited about trying out a new restaurant, even a simple neighborhood bakery. I really wanted to like this one, especially because I went far out of my way to get here. Unfortunately, I won't be making a detour back again.

Egg custard tart, pineapple buns, cheesy hot dog bun, mini hot dog buns

I really like this small bakery on Noriega, especially its Pineapple buns. They have the perfect soft crunch and aren't overly baked or crumbly like other bakeries. I haven't been able to find this style of pineapple bun anywhere else nearby. Boss Bakery only takes cash and has a limited offering and selection, with no loafs or cakes, but if you know what "baos" you want, and it's in the display window, then it's bound to be good. The lady working the place speaks English and Cantonese and knows her regulars well. I also really like Boss' egg custard tarts. They're not overly sweet and they are fairly priced. Personally I like the crusts to be a little on the lighter, flakier side, which Boss delivers on. Apparently, some people are so used to burned toasty crusts from dim sum restaurants that they felt strongly enough to give 2 star reviews to this minority owned and operated small business in COVID, which is a pretty petty thing to do. IMHO Boss Bakery egg custard tarts are great. If you want overbaked egg tarts, wider selection, cakes or loafs of bread, go to a chain like Sheng Kee or 85C and leave this small business alone.

Bbq pork bun with a long piece of tough inedible tendon
Myron L.

First time trying this place. Egg tart - tasteless paper like pastry and most likely not baked enough as you can see how white the pastry is. The egg mixture is just as bad . No egg flavor and very watery. Sure the egg tart next to it looks better but that's no excuse when you choose to sell the product Bbq pork bun- lots of filling, taste good, the bread is ok but the biggest problem is the long piece of inedible tendon that came with it. Only reason I'm giving it a 2 star instead of 1 is because it's my first time trying this place and I'm not sure if there will be a 2nd. Also every business deserve a shot but they should definitely put out some effort when people spend money t

I could see the balloon that held all of the anticipated excitement my husband had of showing me a "new" spot (it was new to me) all but heartbreakingly deflate. Sigh. Not wanting that crestfallen look to prevail, I told him we'd try again. A hole in the wall that is takeout only, the customarily drab sunset weather doesn't do the vibe any favors out here. When it's overcast & cold outside, does anyone want cold pineapple buns to go with it? That was my first experience, so I was curious about how the do over was going to go. Night & day... Yelpess with the mostess Cherylynn was spot on when she said the buns need to be warm & eaten asap. This is key to experiencing a stellar treat over a humdrum one. On our 2nd visit they were hot. They were pillowy. They were divine. Gloomy sunset weather? It could be RAINING outside & I wouldn't care right now. It was a total 180. Butter. Do it! I suggest you go for the gold, kerrygold Irish butter. Matcha. I love matcha so it's an automatic order but it's a definite winner. Not too sweet, because matcha isn't naturally sweet. Custard. Hubby's favorite. He's a vanilla head, so... Salted egg yolk. Hubby's other favorite. I like, he loves. Ube. WOW. Better than the matcha which is weird coming from me. The Ube filling BAKES INTO the interior & it is amazing! I wished I'd gotten 6 of these. The puffs. How friggin adorable. Just throw in 6 puffs. Or 18. Then dip them in the side of custard that comes with. If you get extra to take home (& you should), all you have to do is be sure to reheat them as per the directions on the box. Just place them on a baking sheet lined with foil, or an oven rack (I've done both, both work), at 325 for around 10 minutes. I think 12-15 minutes is actually ideal. I couldn't believe how soft they were after this. Like new! The next day, after being refrigerated all night! I know weird, but fact! A couple of days later I requested that we go again next Saturday. Like when you were a kid & you couldn't wait for Friday because Friday's were pizza night. That crestfallen look my husband had was replaced with delighted satisfaction. Glee even. We went again the following Saturday. 5 stars

They're tiny details like the cute, hand drawn 'Dog Parking' sign, the banners and drawings from other kids, and all of the carefully arranged baked goods. Our cousins were familiar with both bakeries and graciously volunteered to be our foodie guides as we drove to these two bakeries Saturday morning. After visiting Tartine and B Patisserie, Arizmendi was our final bakery and our last stop on our Bay Area foodie tour. Just like the other two bakeries, Arizmendi was a popular destination, it was different than the other two in the selection of the pastries, and I highly recommend their corn cranberry scone and their cheese focaccia. Arizmendi is also located in the Mission District specifically on Valenica and 24th Street. The bakery is in between a Royal gas station and the KitTea Cat Lounge. Parking consists of street parking and just like the other bakeries, parking could be challenging, but Arizmendi is worth the trouble parking and walking to this confectionary paradise. This bakery is a business where their baked goods are enjoyed at home since there is minimal seating. What's unique about this bakery compared to the other two is how the baked goodies are selected. It is self serve where it's a little hectic trying to maneuver around other customers to pick the pastries and breads you desire. The young black lady behind the register who checked us out was courteous, friendly, and took care of us quickly. As you enter Arizmendi, there are four wooden display cases with plexiglass holding scones, cinnamon rolls, muffins, pies, croissants, focaccia, cookies, and shortbreads. As you peer through the plexiglass to decide what to select, make sure to grab the provided wax to pick up your baked goods and place them in the provided bags. One of our friends asked us to grab scones, so scones were one of the items we knew we were going to purchase. My wife selected other items, but I asked her for a focaccia because my cousin said that Arizmendi was know for their pizza breads. I highly recommend you purchase their corn cranberry scones. These scones are hearty, the cranberry is plentiful, and I really enjoyed these while I was drinking a coffee at home. The focaccia I picked was a cheese focaccia made with poblanos, kale, and queso fresco. That square pizza bread was a savory revelation where I devoured that as snack after heating it in our home toaster oven. It was cheesy, the poblanos and kale were tasty, and I completely agreed with my cousin's assessment about their pizza bread. We're so grateful to our cousins for taking valuable time to serve as our foodie tour guides during our trip to San Francisco. Bay Area denizens are blessed to have three bakeries where they can satisfy their pastry, dessert, and bread cravings. We're fans of Arizmendi's scones and pizza bread.
