I finally got to try B&C! Came on a Friday around 11am and only waited about 20 mins. A few of the pastries were out, but that's fine by me if I don't need to spend 2 hours waiting for them. The banana pecan cold brew was delish (I wish it was easier to just get their drinks) and the savory pastries were particularly good. Next time, I'd get more savory than sweet options. Love the rotating menu too! Beware the long line. Check the Instagram for updates and don't plan to eat there since there is standing-room-only that is taken up by waiting patrons.

Butter & Crumble has been on my list for so long because every time I walked by, the line was insane. First time I tried going around 1pm and they were already sold out even though Google said they close at 2pm. So next time, I prepared. I came back at 10am, with my kindle, waited in line around 40 minutes before finally got to the pastries. From their May menu, I ordered the Strawberry Rhubarb Cruffin and the Pistachio Cardamom Sugar Croissant. And you know what, just wow... I was shocked. These pastries are seriously next level. The cruffin was my favorite, buttery, unbelievably flaky with layers that shattered perfectly when you bite into it. The strawberry rhubarb filling had the perfect balance of sweet and tart, while the orange blossom mascarpone cream outside had a very light floral flavor. These combination was just god made. The pistachio croissant was also another level . Super buttery, crisp outside, soft inside, with very (very very) heavy pistachio cream filling that tasted very nutty and rich but not too sweet. The cardamom sugar coating made it even better, and aromatic. Every bite tasted so heavenly. Definitely the best bakeries I've had in the Bay.

In my (forever) quest for the best pastry in San Francisco, this is pretty high up on the charts. The hype is real, but the long queues ate not for the faint at heart. We arrived bright and early on Mother's Day before 9:30 am and we didn't get our order in till 11:15 am. That is close to a 2 hour wait. We treated it as an adventure and a price to pay for the best rated pastries in the city. Did it once but not sure if I have the heart to wait 2 hours in a queue. The pastries are top notch though. The pistachio cardamom croissant is the bomb, I would get multiples next time. Their savory pastries are amazing too- got the herby olive twist. The Orange rosemary was super good as well, such an amalgamation of flavors and texture. They were sold out of the Coffee Caramel Pain Au Chocolat and a couple other pastries, so missed those. The bakery doesn't have much space to eat inside, so take them to Washington Square or wherever you are headed and enjoy your hard earned pastries.

My partner managed to get onto their weekly preorder drop. He had been trying for weeks. We got a box of 8 assorted - 3 savories and 5 sweets for about $64. It included, "Coffee Caramel Pain Au Chocolat, Orange Rosemary Pastry, Herby Olive Twist, Blackberry Ricotta Swirl, Morty P (pork!!), Lamb Pain Suisse, Strawberry Rhubarb Cruffin, Brown Butter Pistachio Cookie" They also offer a box of 4 but I'd figured it's so sought after, we'd go for the 8 and damn, the hype is real. When we picked up our order at 9am on a Saturday, the line stretched 2 blocks! I can now see why. I hate that they change their menu monthly because it makes me want to try to preorder another box and it was so hard the first time. It's the best and our favorite bakery in SF for us right now. It's highly ranked up there. Hopefully when they open up their 2nd location, the wait will be much shorter.

I decided to see what all the fuss was about and went on a Sunday morning. While the food was undeniably good, I'm not sure any pastry is worth a two-hour wait. I'm always hunting for the city's best bakery whenever I'm traveling, so this was certainly and experience. I ordered the cold brew, the bacon, egg, & cheese, and the pistachio cardamom sugar croissant. The breakfast croissant was great, but the pistachio croissant was the winner. The cream filling was perfect--rich but not overly sweet. It's a fantastic bakery; just be prepared to spend your entire morning in line. No seating inside. You're picking up for to-go. They also have limits for how many pastries a group can order. Check out their signage for more information.

IT IS WORTH THE HYPE. I waited 2 hours and I would do it again. The savory pastries are unreal. Flavors are amazing and well-balanced. The prime rib croissant and french onion soup croissant were absolutely perfect. Sweet pastries were also good but I prefer savory. Make sure you follow their instagram where you can find their menu for the month and also daily updates about how long the line is. Very hard to find parking so take the bus or have someone drop you off. Staff were nice and friendly. There are like 2 seats in the store so it's more of a grab and go place.

The famed two-hour wait... Is it worth it? Unfortunately, yes. First of all, the menu is always phenomenal. They do the best job at innovating pastries in a way that is innovative and obvious at the same time. A French Onion Soup Croissant? Like obviously that sounds so good, and why have I never had one before? Secondly, Butter and Crumble sets a limit for how many of each item you can order, so that they can keep up with demand and ensure that people in line still have access to a wide variety of pastries by the time they get to the front. Beautiful model, and greatly appreciated from someone who waited the hour and a half. Thirdly? It's really freaking good. The pastries are flaky, buttery, flavorful, and everything you could want from hearing any of the descriptions. The lamination on the croissants is BEAUTIFUL, light and flaky, but still so decadent and moist. I highly recommend any of their croissants, rotating or permanent flavors, as I am sure they've dreamt up something beautiful. It's worth waking up early for a day and spending an hour or two waiting for breakfast. Enjoy!

Ok the verdict is in - this line is not worth the wait for croissants unless you have the time and patience Don't get me wrong - bombbbbb pastry. Zatar lamb croissant. But any other bakery of similar quality delivers without the wait. The cookie on the other hand was so unique and not too sweet. Pistachio and chocolate delight but again I'm not waiting in this line ever again when I can go to spruce for a good cookie or Arsicault for croissants easily. Again top notch productsssssss but the wait is a turn off

At 8:10am on a Sunday, there were probably approximately 100 people already waiting. (Butter & Crumble opens at 9am.) There are so many people waiting that they need to have a designated employee acting as the "line coordinator" going over the rules (stand close to the building, don't talk too loud since we're below housing, max of 10 per party, 3 of each item). I personally don't understand the per party rule, since some people could have a party of five and some could just be a party of one. Nevertheless, I waited a total of 2.5 hours (1 hour waiting before the business opened) and was able to get what I wanted. Since I was devoting so much time to this pasty-eating endeavor, I figured I may was well order a variety and got 8 of the 10 pastries available in March: Beef Birria Pain Suisse (x2), Guinness Cruffin (x2), Baklava Bun, Ruby Twist, Pork Bun Bearclaw, Lomo Saltado Croissant, Chopped Cheese Pain Suisse & Pistachio Cardamom Sugar Croissant. While I appreciate the wide variety of flavors/options, the pastries fell flat for me. I was underwhelmed with most of the ones I tried. Some items lacked flavor (like the Beef Birria), one had really tough meat (the Lomo Saltado)...it just wasn't what I hoped it would be. For $98 (nearly $10 a pop), I want to love what I'm eating. That being said, my favorite sweet one was the Pistachio Cardamom Sugar Croissant. My favorite savory was the Ruby Twist. There's two hour parking in the area (Mondays-Saturdays), but note you may need to move your car since the wait could be longer than this. Based off the selection I tried, I won't be tempted to join the 2+ hour wait ever again, but I enjoyed getting to check out the bakery for myself and form my own opinion! Side note: Even without the wait, I'd still be rating it a 3. My review is solely based on my feelings about the pastries. While not for me personally, I'm happy to say my review is in the minority and most people really love the items from this woman-owned business!

The hype is real!! The pastries here are such unique flavor combinations and so artfully crafted. The layering work for the crunch is unlike anything I've ever tasted. Worth a wait in line for at least 30-45 minutes. My favorite thing was the savory pastry. It had lamb this past month. The strawberry rhubarb cruffin was also incredible. That one surprised me!

Ambiance: A women owned and majority women ran establishment in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco. Very bright with the ability to see them laminating and baking while waiting for your baked goods and coffee. Wait time: An extremely long wait time to get into the bakery as it is extremely popular. Even getting there 2 hours before open people are waiting outside. Definitely bring yourself a chair and something to entertain yourself while waiting and get there early to make sure they do not run out of a pastry you want as there is a limited amount each day. They do a weekly drop on Tuesday between 9am and 12pm but it is EXTREMELY popular so it sells out fast. Service: Extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff on the food and brinks that are being served. They do have a worker who goes outside to make sure people are fine and that the line stays moving without others cutting the line. Food: If you are looking for unique and different flavored laminated pastries or drinks, they have some of the more unique flavors in city. The pastries are generously filled and baked extremely well whether it is savory or sweet. Food rotates monthly with a new menu so it is not guaranteed anything shown in previous pictures will be made that month. Best to look on their social media (instagram) for updates on monthly menu and daily sell outs. Blueberry Pancake Matcha Latte was flavored well and not overly sweet with a good matcha flavor it. The milk options were between Whole and Oat when the server was asking.

Parking: Free street parking but very limited in this residential area. Interior: 1 counter space with 2 seats and the rest is barely enough standing space for the line to order and picking up. Wait Time: 1.5hr wait at 8:30a. They open at 9 and I got to order by 10a. All items still available. Took about 10-15min to pack because they had to make more of a certain item. Left at about 11a and the wait/line was about 10min but most of the popular items were sold out by 10:30a so I recommend coming by 9am if you want something. Otherwise, just come around 11a and take chances with their regular items. Items Order: Croissants: 10/10 Prime Rib $12 - prime rib filling was a solid amount for the pastry ratio. well seasoned and cooked so that it was not dry. Croissant was a bit small compared to others. 10/10 French Onion Soup $8 - Very yummy filling with strong onion flavor. Yum 10/10 Pistachio Cardamom $8 - Regular monthly item but still very good. The cream had a medium pistachio flavor not much cardamom. Cream filling amount was good. 10/10 Coconut Passionfruit $8 - delicious passionfruit flavor. coconut addition also great complement and balance. 9/10 Tiramisu $8 - heavier on the cream side but still really good. Needs more coffee flavor all the croissant bases were amazing. very buttery, flaky, perfect crispy exterior to soft airy interior ratio. 10/10 Spinach Artichoke Croquiche $9 - insanely good! croissant base was extra buttery on this one but the layers and texture still held well. filling was generous and was so gooooood!! 7/10 Banana Praline Cruffin $8 - average cruffin and average banana flavor. 4/10 Dulce Pain Suisse $8 - disgusting, this was mad dry and just mostly pastry. the filling was very little in portion and also texture was close to clay. 7/10 Choco Cookie $5 - standard good cookie nothing special overall would come back for specialized items or at 11am for no wait on regular items

Got the last chocolate croissant on Thursday at 12 (waited maybe 15 mins but there was nothing left), and my friend waited in line for 2 hours on Friday morning (lined up around 8) and got a few varieties, and I do understand the hype. Not much indoor seating, but most people get a box or two. It was the priciest croissant I've ever gotten, but the filling and flavors are worth it. Just know you will be waiting in line to get!

Even so, they were refreshing that pastry case so that I was not without options. So many amazing-looking things, so I got 3 things just for myself: Chocolate Banana Almond Croissant $5.25: The classic, I had to try. And it was so good!! I thought it might be too rich, but I actually found it to be quite balanced. I loved the fresh mashed banana/banana purée inside, and it went really well with the chocolate. I didn't get a ton of almond flavor comparatively, but I appreciated the coating on the top for a heartier crunch in addition to the croissant flakiness. Like everyone else, I would definitely recommend this one! Passionfruit Bostock $4.25: The staff person helping me told me this was a good option, so I was happy about that. I would agree! It has a beautiful crisp on the outside and a moist crumb inside. The passionfruit flavor was really nice and not too strong. I believe they rotate different flavors of this one, so I'd definitely want to try more. Bostocks on the whole are underrated, and I think they have just the loveliest texture. All-in-One Cake: This is so creative. I was going to stop at the above two pastries, but when the staff person said that this cake was quite literally made up of all the other cakes seen in the case, I was already sold. How cool and creative and reduce-reuse-recycle is that!!!?? I love! And it was such a fun eat! I love how they added crust at the bottom and a gorgeous chocolate layer on top to tie everything together. And every bite was a little different: some fruity, some nutty, some crunchier. Super cool. I was able to nab a table and work a little bit, which was nice. It's a good vibe inside with a little hustle and bustle, but still cozy overall. I'll be back!
