I've had this French bakery bookmarked for a while and finally got a chance to try their viennoiserie. The 1st time I came here, I left empty handed even though it was only 2:00pm on a Saturday. I decided to make a detour here before walking over to North Beach and was pleasantly surprised to find that there were still some items left even though it was later in the day than my 1st visit. I recently returned to Maison Nico with friends, and while I was sad they had run out of the Brioche Feuilletée by late morning on a Saturday (~10:30 AM), I decided to pick up a baguette for the week. The cafe was packed at this hour, as it appears to be a popular brunch spot as well. I'll have to come back to try their quiche next time! I broke off a piece of the baguette when I got home, and this was by far one of the best baguettes I've found in the city so far. A cross between a traditional French baguette and sourdough, the texture was perfectly spongy and chewy with a slightly tangy flavor. This was a local bakery nearby our office that is apparently a well-acclaimed bakery worth trying. My coworkers have been recommending this place for the longest time and after finally trying it, it was definitely worth it. I wasn't sure what to order, so I ordered the first 2 items I saw: the seasonal twice-baked croissant and some brioche curry/turmeric-based pastry? (I couldn't find it on the site lol) The seasonal twice-baked croissant was amazing! It was a blueberry croissant filled with blueberries and blueberry jam within. They didn't hold back on the filling. There was an almond crumble on top of the croissant, which added so much more taste and flavor to the pastry itself. Like I was truly in awe. The second pastry I ordered, which I didn't take a photo of, was the brioche curry/turmeric-based pastry. I didn't read when I ordered it, so I ate it completely surprised by the taste. I love a savory pastry, which was a perfect addition for my lunch. The flavors were good, but the turmeric flavor was a little overpowering and not really my favorite. For the 2 I ordered, I'd say it was pretty good overall. For all the other things I wasn't able to order, I appreciated this bakery's variety of spreads and flavors offered. The line was already forming when we arrived just ten minutes before opening. This charming little patisserie serves beautifully crafted pastries that are well worth the wait. There was nothing plain about the butter croissant. Its delicate, flaky layers and crisp, golden exterior gave way to a rich, buttery center. The traditional quiche, served warm, was the perfect start to an early Sunday morning. A light, fluffy egg custard was filled with tender bites of potato, bacon, and melted cheese, in a perfectly crisp, buttery puff pastry crust. The Paris Brest is a must order. We decided to try them out per recommendation from a friend, as we were walking through the area, we opted to take a break here. Settled on a cup of Americano and cappuccino along with a couple of rolls. They have a few tables inside as well as outside. The setting is authentic with a cozy feeling; loved the break walls inside. You order at the counter and get seated for your order. They were very efficient with serving our order. My go to order to get is always the chocolate croissant and the pâté which is smooth and rich. I usually order this when I go and try and snag a spot inside though there is often minimal to no seating and only about three little tables inside and outside. While the pate is delicious and absolutely unique, I do feel that the croissant and pastry based goods are not as great or fluffy and delicate as Arsticault bakery which for me is my holy grail standard for solid croissants and pastries. Although I usually prefer croissants to have a bit of chew alongside a medium level of crisp, I also enjoy a good ole' classic croissant, which to me, is one that has a nice crunch for light flaking, airy center and an ever slight centered chew. The lamination on their croissants were excellent. I also enjoyed the pain au chocolate, which is now my favorite in the city. The perfect amount of chocolate and a perfectly baked exterior. Since my eyes are always bigger than my stomach, I got a mixed assortment of items that caught my attention and what can I say. All of them were tasty and were happily gobbled up. The super star of the box was the canele. Holy moly. I've had a handful of these in my life and I realize why I never enjoyed them. Croque monsier - I didn't like this honestly. Bread was too thick, filling was bland.
