They're so flaky. But in a good way. Winner of Bon Appétit magazine's Best New Bakery in America (2016), this is still the gold standard a decade later. The devil on my shoulder wants to dismiss them as "donuts for girls", but the angel points out that the butter-heavy lamination means the items shatter in paper-thin golden flakes even though the insides are tender and airy. The almond croissant and a chocolate almond croissant were great. The must try is the Kouign Amann because it's sweeter and the caramelized sugar makes it chewy and flaky. The ham and cheese is the perfect breakfast sandwich that doesn't have a Mc in it. The coffee (they partner with local roasters Flywheel Coffee Roasters) was better than average. This location isn't as pretty as it could be. Scuff marks, underused space, dinginess, but having a working, clean bathroom, replenished inventory, and great service makes up for it.

Where do all the Gen Z's go? Oh, let me not forget the Millennials! Well, where do they go? They go to Arsicault for their baked goods, especially their croissants. Here is my story: The entrance is very unassuming. There are a few tables if you choose to sit and nibble on your croissants. Not the cheapest around but that lends to my theory of you get what you pay for! The size of the croissant is huge, it will feed two (at least!). Being it was my first visit to Arsicault, I felt trying their basic ordinary croissant would be appropriate, giving me the chance to taste the croissant on its own merit. The croissant as basic as it is, did NOT disappoint. The ratio of butter to flour was smart and precise. My next visit will be to taste their almond croissant... Go there or be square!

I love that I'm walking distance from one of the best almond croissants in the Bay Area. The walk each way is about 12 minutes so it's perfect for that afternoon break to get some fresh air and sunshine. I remember the days when Arsicault only existed on Arguello and the line was hours long. I thoroughly enjoy that they have several locations now and I can get in and out of the store in less than five minutes. This location is much bigger than the original location and has seating inside and done tables outside too.

I fell in love with Arsicault the first time I was introduced. The assortment of baked goods including breads, quiche, croissants, cookies, loaves, kouigns, scone, vegetable galette and apple turnover. The coffee bar turns this bakery into a one stop shop with offerings of espressos, lattes, mocha, tea, cold brew and others. Sandwiches are also available, prepared cold. Within the UN Civic Center Plaza, it is a short walk from Civic Center Bart. Definitely worth a stop on your morning or afternoon commute to pop in, grab some bites then head back out or take a seat in the bakery and enjoy inside or out. The bakery is sectioned off by a gate, so it is kept clean and external to the traffic in the area. With their hours of 8a to 3p daily, it is a perfect breakfast, brunch, lunch, late snack spot. The service is always friendly with smiles and great service. The goods are constantly made throughout the day and replenished regularly. The turnover of the freshly prepared food is high as there is always a line, fast moving, shorter at certain times than others. Definitely worth a visit.

I hit the almond croissant jackpot today! Usually, when I swing by the Dogpatch location in the afternoon, the almond croissants are completely sold out. If I'm lucky, I might snag a plain one, but it's usually a gamble. Today was a total win! I walked in at 2:30 PM and was so surprised to see around a dozen almond croissants just waiting there. As always, they were incredibly flaky, perfectly buttery, and absolutely delicious. 10/10, never disappoint

If you haven't tried this iconic SF bakery, you're missing out. Arsicault has some of the best chocolate croissants I've ever had. They're buttery, rich, and hefty, full of crème. You can order them with almond, chocolate or blackberry, but I personally think you can't go wrong. They've also got kouignamann and cookies which are both pretty good as well. One downside to this location is that it's a bit dirty and it doesn't seem like the staff cleans much inside, although they themselves are fairly friendly.

The pastries here are worth the drive to SF from the South Bay. The kouign amann is always a great, and this time I ordered the blackberry hazelnut croissant as well and Omg. This croissant was the best one I've ever had. I also ordered a savory mushroom quiche and I got one bite. My kid devoured the rest. Definitely getting both of these items again when we're back in the area. The civic center location was fast. From around the gate to ordering took about a 15-20 min wait. So much better than other waits I've done.

I was pleased to find a short line upon my arrival, and I truly appreciated the friendly service provided by your staff. While the chocolate croissant I ordered was delicious, I noticed there were only two pastry options available at the time of my visit. I had heard so much about the bakery so this was very disappointing. I would have loved to see a wider variety of items to choose from during my visit. This is the reason I can only give three stars. Since the weather was pleasant, I thoroughly enjoyed eating on the front patio, which made for a lovely experience overall. Thank you for the great service, and I look forward to visiting again soon.

Don't be intimidated by the line it moves quickly. Pastries are served warm which is quiet amazing when you bite into the chocolate croissant into some warm chocolate not to sweet and pretty rich. Omg the crunchy outer shell yet soft center of the Kougin Amann was amazing. Definitely don't skip this one. Also enjoyed a Mediterranean sandwich which comes on a pretty large baguette (maybe half the size of a full one) and the aioli is perfect. The bread is so yummy I would definitely have this again for a savory bite. Ham and cheese is a keep, the flakiness is perfect, the warmth is amazing, the balance between cheese and ham is perfect. It's pretty crowded inside but is not difficult to get a seat once you've ordered. Coffee is delicious as well!

Arsicault Bakery definitely lives up to the hype. We came as a party of 7. There was a long line, but it moved quickly--we only ended up waiting about 20 minutes. We tried the chocolate almond croissant and the kouign amann. Both were incredibly buttery and flaky. I appreciated how generous they were with the almond cream filling. The kouign amann is a classic pastry that rarely disappoints, and Arsicault does it very well. The pastries were reasonably priced, especially considering the quality and reputation of the bakery. My only minor critique is that everything leans pretty rich and heavy, so one pastry was more than enough for me. Overall, excellent pastries, efficient service despite the crowds, and well worth a visit if you're in San Francisco. Just come hungry and be prepared for a buttery indulgence.

When I was planning my trip back to SF, I knew I had to come back. I tried a few new things this time around. The pastry of the ham and cheese croissant was amazing. The kouign amann was SO SO good. The crunch from when you bite into it. The butter pastry. Delectable. Delicious. Line at this location moves fast, but it is very packed! And is worth it!

Arsicault absolutely lives up to the hype. This place is known for its croissants for a good reason. If you show up after lunch, you can walk in with no wait and little selection. So go early and get in line. It's well worth the wait. You are getting croissants, obviously. But if you have room or are feeling frisky there are also morning buns, turnovers, scones, kouign-amanns, cookies, pound cakes, quiche, loaves of bread, and sandwiches. Coffee drinks are Mr. Espresso and take another 10 minutes to make if you're in the morning rush. I still dream of the Blackberry, Almond, Hazelnut Croissant. It was everything you hope a flavored, twice baked croissant will be. Buttery, flaky, shatteringly crisp on the outside, tender and chewy on the inside. The blackberry compote balancing the sweet almond paste, so even though it's very sweet, you still greedily want more. By contrast, the plain, chocolate, and ham and cheese croissants are light and airy, showering you with buttery flakes as you break them open. Service is efficient, trying to kept the line moving. The only deterrent for some might be the neighborhood. If that's the case for you there are other locations to visit. Arsicault is worth the trip. If you love a sweet croissant, this should be high on your list.

The best almond croissant I've had! Also may take the crown for best croissant I've had or definitely tied for top 2. My friend got the raisin bun and that was also delicious. There is a line but it moves pretty fast. We were there on a weekend morning and it was about a 20-30 minute wait. I wanted to try so many more things so I'll definitely be back. There's pretty limited seating.

Do they have any pastries still?

Yes they have .. like chocolate croissants

Do you have any options that are vegetarian without eggs?

Hi Miraj, Thank you for reaching out. Unfortunately all the vegetarian options include eggs.

How is parking at this location?

Limited street parking only in the area. If you're driving, I advise you to just drive to their other location.

Is there a line at this location? The arguello location always has a line out the door spanning (45min wait).

I went on a Saturday around 2-2:30 PM. There was no wait, but they had run out of many things by then. I was still able to purchase an almond croissant and an almond chocolate croissant though.

Is this location closed during the shelter in place period?

    They have reopened this weekend!

What are the hours especially on weekends?

They're currently only open on Monday - Friday, 7 am - 2 pm. Closed on the weekends.

I arrived at the bakery before it opened on a weekend morning, and there were already a couple of brave souls in line. I waited only about 25 minutes for the bakery to open, and once doors officially opened to customers, I was in and out in no time with my fresh pastries in hand. I enjoyed my almond croissant as soon as I got back home, and now I fully understand why Arsicault is at the top of everyone's SF bakery list. The almond croissant was still warm, the inside struck the perfect balance between fluffy and gooey (from the almond paste), and the exterior was nicely crisped. The almond filling is super rich and decadent yet not overly sweet. I also noticed - and appreciate - how Arsicault's almond croissant doesn't include toasted almonds on top, since these can often get over-baked and taste bitter. I definitely agree this is one of the best pastries in SF now.

I definitely feel like the team implementing the 7:45AM start time to line up has helped a lot. Not only is it better for the neighbors, but it also makes the whole experience feel a lot less chaotic compared to showing up super early and scrambling to get in line. Everything feels much calmer and organized now. As for the pastries: To be honest, it really depends on what you like. I'm one that gravitates towards pretty much anything with meat and chocolate. Because of that, most of their savory/meaty and creamy pastries are always a must for me. They're super flaky, flavorful and decadent. You can really tell how much time and effort they put into making everything as high quality as possible, especially since you can see them making everything from the window while waiting in line. All in all, I think there's been a lot of improvement over the past year with some trial and error. Their pastries have always been delicious and I personally think it's worth the wait. I recommend getting to the area closer to 7:45AM so you have a better chance of being towards the front of the line. If not, it's still better to come before opening, I just wouldn't recommend getting there right before they open. By then it's not guaranteed that you'll get everything you want since they do run out depending on how many people are there.
