Before our leisurely drive to San Francisco, I had coordinated with my cousin that I wanted to see her, her brother my other cousin, their Mom my Auntie, and both of their families. Lovingly, they arranged for us to meet up for dinner Friday night. We had discussed with my cousins before visiting them that my wife wanted to check out two renowned bakeries in the Bay Area, Tartine and Arizmendi. My cousin and her husband graciously and kindly offered to drive us around downtown San Francisco Saturday morning to visit these bakeries and we had such a great time on our personalized Bay Area foodie tour narrated by my well-informed cousin-in-law (CIL). Our first stop on this belly stuffing foodie tour was Tartine, which served one of the yummiest almond croissants I've ever eaten. That pastry alone warrants a visit to this highly rated and highly reviewed bakery. Since our CIL was in the know about The City's downtown eateries and bakeries, he recommended that we start out early to visit Tartine because he said that lines to these places could get crazy long. Thankfully for us, we got to Tartine before it opened and were second in line to enter. Tartine is a well chronicled bakery with locations around the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Seoul, Korea. The location we visited is on Guerrero and 18th streets in the Mission District and it's across from Pay And Save Grocery. Parking might be challenging with street and metered parking. As soon as you enter the bakery, there's a hipster and local mom and pop business vibe. You're greeted by glass cases displaying beautiful cakes, pastries, breads, loaves, scones, and cookies. There are stool seats and elevated chairs where you can eat on planks of wood either facing the steady flow of customers or looking outside. I liked how there were paintings hanging from what appeared to be from local artists. The staff were friendly and took care of us pretty quickly. Tartine was our first stop in what would be a fun foodie adventure. Since I always start my day with a cup of coffee, I ordered caramel cappuccino. The foam on top had a beautifully designed heart from the barista, but I like my coffee sweet and after my first sip, I knew I had to add some type of sweetener. I used a lot of their complimentary honey to make it sweeter. My wife, who works in the baking industry, had placed Tartine on her list of places she wanted to visit to experience their scones and pastries. If my wife knew about this bakery, then I knew that I'd be indulging in baked goods of the highest caliber. Of course I let my wife pick what she thought were the best items, but I asked the customer who was the first person in line what Tartine was known for and she said their almond croissants, so when it was our turn to make our selections, I asked for Tartine's Frangipane Croissant, which has almond-cream filling and brandy. Brandy?!!?? Honestly, I don't remember tasting any brandy, but what I do remember was flakiness of the croissant, the thick cut almonds on top, the heartiness of the croissant, and the generous amount of almond-cream filling. It was a beautiful looking pastry and the taste was even better. Seriously, one of the most memorable croissants I've ever eaten. My family and I are blessed to have family willing to take time out of their morning to take us on a guided foodie tour to some iconic bakeries and local eateries. Our first bakery stop was Tartine and after eating that delectable almond croissant, the other bakeries would be hard pressed to beat them.

Tres Leches Cake Round

The tres leches cake from Tartine Bakery (ordered for the second year in a row) was honestly unreal, impossibly soft, perfectly soaked, and somehow still light at the same time. Every bite tasted like a little cloud of vanilla and cream with that rich homemade flavor that stays with you long after dessert. Easily one of the best in SF

Canelé de Bordeaux

I fear I have never written a review for Tartine Bakery. Which honestly confuses me, considering I've been getting pastries here since I was a literal child. Anyways, this is on my bakery rotation anytime I'm in the area and looking for a treat. Tartine Bakery is a Mission gem. It's beloved by so many folks in the city and in the Bay. They're known for their flaky and buttery pastries, which I'm a fan of! As well as their breakfast items, such as sandwiches and coffee. This location is a corner shop with communal seating inside. It's a small shop and mainly operates as take-out, which I normally do. Service moves fast for the most part, and workers are nice. My go-to pastry here is their Morning Buns. It's literally one of my favorites. It's sugary-sweet, light and flaky, and has a nice flavor from the zest. This go-around, I got a Canelé de Bordeaux instead, which was fabulous--soft and moist, crunchy yet slightly chewy, and with a nice caramel-rum taste. I'd get it again. I got my family a variety of baked goods, and they all seemed to enjoy them. Tartine is a staple. If you're visiting, you must go! If you're a local, you've probably gone countless times. Consistently good pastries with a nice chill vibe, what's not to love? Find them off Guerrero Street with metered parking nearby.

The famed Tartine Bakery  was not a recommended spot to me by my friends who live in SF, but I was told that I had to stop by if they had one specific flavor of bread pudding. Called in, and lucky me, they had banana bread pudding.  The banana pudding is a hot, custardy, glob of soaked bread and fresh bananas. It does not look or sound appetizing, but it's a fantastic and filling dessert, definitely meant to be shared. They serve it to you in what feels like a pound serving.  Again, it was very very filling and a very large portion, so keep that in mind if you're ordering a bunch of things. That was literally the only thing we got, and it was delicious!

Vegetable quiche, pickled carrot

Three of us went to Tartine on a Saturday morning and not surprisingly it was busy. The place is tiny - I honestly can't imagine sitting there to eat, you wouldn't be able to hear yourself chew. I ordered the veg quiche and waited, and waited. I get it, they're busy. But at this point, with all the chaos, I was kind of over the experience. Then I opened the quiche box and found a bent carrot. What is this carrot? One bite and all the chaos melted away - that carrot was damn delicious. The quiche was excellent too, a nice flaky crust, not at all skimpy on fillings. But the carrot? I'd go back for that. My friends split an egg sandwich and said it was okay, but they also had banana pie and thought it was nice, the chocolate between the crust and filling is a nice touch.

The shop is on the smaller side with there being a constant line but it goes by fast. The staff are nice and friendly. The pastries themselves are alright, my friend told me they're know for their bread so might go back for that.

Considering "Tartine Bakery" has thousands upon thousands of Yelp reviews over the years, this place has been dubbed as the #1 top bakery in all of San Francisco. Located in the heart of the Mission District and at the corner of 18th St & Guerrero St, this wildly popular bakery has been rolling out some of their amazing breads, pastries, and so much more dating back to 2002. I've been here on numerous occasions but this was way before a time when snapping photos with a smartphone were all the rage. Therefore, I am giving you an in-depth, detailed review of this place. Ever since their original location opened in the early-2000s, they also have two other locations in San Francisco as well as five locations in the Los Angeles area and six locations in the Seoul, South Korea area. With the vast assortment of heavenly baked goods this place carries, the real winner is their bread, specifically their Country sourdough. The flour, yeast, moisture, and fermentation that is used is arguably the best of the best as this has to rank as one of the best loaves of sourdough I've ever tried. Whether you use it for a sandwich, as a starter dish (with dip), or all by itself (with butter), this bread hits all the high marks in my book. As for the bakery itself, this place is quite small with very limited seating inside. During my visit which was the morning of Saturday 2/14/2026 at around 11:20am, it was packed to a capacity as the line to order snaked outside to the sidewalk. However, from the time I arrived until I purchased my goods was roughly 25 minutes; not bad considering there were customers shoulder-to-shoulder in all directions. The hours (at least at this location) are quite reasonable as they are open 7 days a week from 7:30am-6:00pm. Parking is quite challenging so I recommend using rideshare, Muni (buses & streetcars), Bart, or by foot. For this being a relatively small business, this place offers a vast selection of what you're looking for. In addition to several variations of bread, they carry a nice assortment of donuts, bagels, waffles, croissants, muffins, and much more. There is also an extensive savory menu that includes several sandwich variations that use their own bread; grilled cheese, tuna, pastrami, turkey, and much more. And what would the food be without beverages? Tartine has you covered with coffee/espresso drinks, tea, matcha, and soft drinks. Again, their menu is so extensive to a point where it is impossible to list everything. If you could get past the crowds and noise level (trust me on a busy day, you will find yourself shouting at the top of your lungs), you should be good to go. The gentleman behind the counter assisted me with a full loaf of their country sourdough bread and a plain croissant. There was so much more I wanted to see but didn't want to hold up the line. My recommendation is to come during the workweek or at least later in the afternoon when it is not as crowded. I will say that the customer service here was top notch while the bread was on a whole other level of deliciousness. When you factor in the popularity of this place, variety of baked goods to choose from, and overall experience, I am giving "Tartine Bakery" (in the Mission District) a solid four stars.

Heap of almond croissant (yum)

FINALLY visited Tartine bakery, which had been on my list for so long! Came here on a Saturday late afternoon/almost evening, there was a line when I got here (which was expected). The line moved fast and was able to find place to sit (yay)! I felt engulfed in the hustle and bustle wave of the bakery.. the place has a character and I am all for it! Wanted to try the chocolate croissant but alas it was sold out (sigh). Ended up getting (I had a big list, so not to fret): Almond croissant, chocolate souffle cake and tres leches cake. The bakes were HEAVENLY! Almond croissant was flaky, filled with the almond cream goodness and a huge serving. The chocolate souffle cake was decandent: soft, rich and luxuriously delectable. I got the tres leches cake to go, as the above two already indulged me in a food coma! It is not a traditional tres leches (and personally, I am a sucker for the moistness of the traditional tres leches cake), but I still very much enjoyed Tartine's take on it. The prices are on the higher side, but you are paying for high quality, and again - DECADENCE!

It was about 1pm and unfortunately they ran out of both their turkey club and their green tropical tea. Friend and I were bummed since she always gets the turkey club when she is here. Cashier was super friendly but the waiters are not. It's SF, a city and sometimes you get pretentious food staff. Did not taste any morning bun in the latte just a flowery powdered taste and lots of cinnamon. If you're into that I'm sure you'll like it. The salads look fantastic and my croissant was pretty great. Love walking the Golden Gate Park and having a light snack after a walk. Will not be stopping by again though it's not for me.

Lucky to come across this bakery after I landed on a Monday and line wasn't too long. Excellent pastries and I had the BEST tuna sandwich of my life. Outstanding flavor, big pieces of avocado, pickles and frisée on fresh made oatmeal bread. Cappuccino was delish - just didn't know I had to pick that up at the counter so it was a bit cold.

SHOCKED at the poor reviews. I was absolutely flabbergasted when I pulled up Tartine Bakery and see they are a solid 4.0 rating. That's really sad. I took the time to read the reviews and from memory, the complaints are legitimate. The ONLY negative anyone in our group said was the staff was rude. Really sad, as this place has always been packed with a massive line. Nonetheless, I give it 5-stars. As I am usually the guy that goes to the counter to order, this time, I was the scrappy one that jumped on an indoor table to save a spot for the four (4) of us. I texted my order to my friends and they ordered for me. I do recall them mentioningthe lady at the counter was underwhelming. The only encounter I had with staff was when I asked for water, I got a very annoyed point to the corner where the self-serve station was. Oh well. The food was fantastic. I get why people hang around a massive line. I got the Croque Monsieur. Heaven. Ham on a piece of sourdough covered in a lovely cheese sauce and asparagus (it was seasonal). I gobbled it all up... didn't regret a bite! They are a bit pricey but they can be, the quality of their product is worth the cost! In a world where you've done everything so perfectly, don't let your counter people be the reason you get crappy reviews. That was super disappointing seeing all the complaints about personnell.

Morning Buns

This place is slightly crowded but the morning bun is really good. I also tried the tart which was phenomenal too. Highly recommend visiting this place as it is next to Dolores Park. Just take away walk 2 blocks and enjoy the food with a view.

The banana cream pie is the best!

Is everything sold out by late afternoon/evening?

No, but the popular items like morning buns do sell out early at times. I've had luck at various times for many different items.

Will the morning buns still be good if I purchase them one day in advance?

not as good but we put it in toaster oven on low baking 200 degrees and it was reasonably revived. You have to keep the bun airtight so it doesn't get too dry.

Do whole cakes have to be preordered?

A necessity? No. But if you see the way they fly out the door you'll absolutely order in advance!

East bay distributors?

Ha! You wish :-) Not that I know of. I could be wrong but I've not seen or heard of Tartine distributing anything outside of their restaurants. They're opening in LA. soon.

It might be a little controversial, but to me, the ambiance of a cafe is most important! And at Sohn, the atmosphere is immaculate. It's very obviously a Korean-style cafe. The interior is washed in a palette of soft neutrals and pale wood. Lots of open spaces, airy lantern light fixtures, fabric tapestries, etc., etc., etc. So beautiful, and so perfect for photos! (My friend and I took lots, believe me.) The only "complaint" I have is that it isn't open seating; an employee will seat you when you arrive, so you can't really choose where you want to settle. Kinda bummed because I wanted to see upstairs. Even though I prioritize cafe aesthetics over food, I'm pleased to report that the food and drinks at Sohn are just as delicious as they look. Style AND substance! There's a QR code at each table, which you scan to order. The workers bring the items to your table directly, which is pretty nice. Here is a rundown of everything we ordered: - Banana oat milk hojicha latte: Wait, why was this so good? It actually might be one of the best drinks I've ever tried. You can tell they use real bananas; there are literally chunks of banana at the bottom. No artificial syrups here. The banana is sweet and creamy, not bitter at all. Plus, it's oat milk! Yay for my fellow lactose-intolerant friends. The hojicha was okay, though. I think that, if it were nuttier, the roasted flavor would've complemented the banana so well, bringing this drink to a whole new level. - Coffee hojicha: Pretty bitter if you don't add syrup, but once it's properly sweetened, it's pretty good. Since their hojicha isn't very flavorful, it's easily overpowered by the coffee, so I wouldn't recommend this one. (Though it's not bad.) - Popcorn chicken: This was so delicious and beautifully presented in a round stone bowl. The chicken was crispy and flavorful, and the fried rice cakes were a unique inclusion! They are rolled in a seaweed seasoning, which reminds me of furikake. Glad they have savory items, too. - Gochujang cookie: Meh, honestly, you can skip this. It's not a bad cookie per se, but it tastes like a regular ol' sugar cookie. I don't taste the gochujang at all. It's not even a pretty cookie, haha, so I wouldn't even order it for aesthetics either. But overall, I had a great experience at Sohn! I saw a lot of people working on their computers here, but it's also a solid spot for photos or hanging out with friends. Parking wasn't too bad when I went (a weekday afternoon), but I heard the line can get long. I would totally recommend this place, and I hope I can return soon to try more items.
