Very expensive for salt bread but good decent flavors. The strawberry mochi is 100% worth it. The strawberry and cream / ube bread is also very worth. Other salt breads left much to be desired though and was not worth $9 each. Good to try once or twice or for a special occasion.

The line is surprisingly long, even on weekday mornings, so if you're hoping to get one of the popular pastries, definitely get there early. The pastries are absolutely beautiful and very eye catching. Presentation wise, they really nailed it. Taste wise, though, I personally didn't find them as impressive as they looked. I kept expecting the flavors to match the beautiful appearance, but they felt a bit more subtle than I was hoping for. If you've had really good ube pastries before, you might find the ube flavor here a little milder than expected. We tried four different pastries, and while they all had interesting and creative flavor combinations, none of them really stood out to me. I'm still glad I gave it a try, but I don't think I'd wait in that line again.

Tano has gone viral for their famous salt breads, and I've wandered over there for treats a few times. It's nice that they have signs outside that tell you if baked goods are sold out for the day, though it doesn't specifically mention the status of salt breads until you get closer to the register. It's also fortunate that there's a limit, so that one person doesn't hoard all the tasty treats. However, if you're aiming for salt bread, get there early, they may have long wait times and sell out relatively quickly. We acquired the last ube salt bread of the day at 9:30am, but there were other pastries to be had. 5/5 The Ube Salt Bread is delicious. The bread itself is pillowy and springy, and the ube cream is thick and has a prominent ube flavor. I'm not a fan of the salty circular bits at the top, but you can flick them at your enemies. The salty bottom crust wasn't there for me this time, but it tends to be pleasantly crispy when super fresh. The ube cream is not too sweet and complements the bread well. 2/5 The Youtiao (Chinese donut) croissant was like a sticky bun with bits of fried randomness scattered about. Thirty minutes after purchase, I tried it, but the youtiao bits were not crispy, just slightly chewy and flavorless. The croissant itself was sweet and honey-like, but also a harder texture. I've also tried the original salt bread and a garlic one. They're all pretty good, but I have a sweet tooth and enjoy the ube one the most. People like this spot so much, I see folks carrying out full 4-packs of pastries, presumably salt bread. I even spotted a woman loading a baby stroller with 3 boxes of treats; I remarked that those were her food babies. Overall, the salt bread is worth a try, even as it seems to be pricier (but also bigger) than other local alternatives.

SALT BREAD! This was my third attempt trying to get Tano since I'm not from the Bay. I came by on a Friday at 10:15 am and parking was difficult. I had to get dropped off and they ended up circling around a few times before coming back for me. There was a little line formed outside the store. It wasn't too bad and it went by really fast since everyone knew what they wanted. I enjoyed the fact that they wrote down which pastry was sold out for the day on their menu. They also have their available pastries out on a dish so you can see how it looks like before ordering it. They limit each type of bread to one per person. Unfortunately, their ube salt bread was already sold out :( Pastry: Salt Bread (8.8/10): OH was this good! I absolutely love the salt bread craze on social media and Tano really knew what they were doing. It was $7 per salt bread. The color, the crunch, the butter hole were ALL there. It was a pretty big piece of bread compared to other salt breads I've tried. I love the crunch I had with each bite and I also love the fluffiness of the inside. It was BUTTERY. The best way that I could describe the amount of butter is, imagine you're adding extra butter at a movie theater and it seeps through the box and your hands get all oily and shiny. That's exactly how I felt as I was eating this salt bread.

Right up there with the best bakeries in SF! Come check it out on a day when Kimi Matcha has a popup for the perfect drink pairing with your pastries. The black sesame cookie was our favorite of the 3 pastries we tried and the guava mochi was also excellent. Totally worth the wait in line for both Tano and for Kimi Matcha!

I've been a fan of Tano and of Paper Son coffee from prior visits, but the bakery pop-up days seem to be struggling with quality control and staff issues. My $7 salt bread on a recent visit was nearly inedible; hollow, swimming in grease, and filled with unmelted chunks of butter. To make matters worse, the overall vibe was tense; a staff member was visibly aggravated/impatient and arguing with an older customer who was confused by the ordering. It was also right at opening so it's not like it had been hours since opening. Having enjoyed past visits, it's disappointing to see things going downhill. Really hope they can try and maintain the quality from before!

The salt bread here is absolutely a must try. They don't have it on Monday and tuesdays and on the days they do have it they sell out quick so you need to go early. Luckily my office is near. Got there at 8:30 am on a Thur and the line was alr long. Luckily it moved quickly. The cafe smells so good in the morning, you can smell like butter in the air. Got strawberry's and cream, ube, and regular. The bread itself has such a flake crust exterior and the inside is pillow-y. The non original ones they pipe a hefty amount of cream in it, while the plain one feels like every layer is just piped with butter. Very rich but worth every bite. Hard to choose a favorite as they were all insanely good!

NomNomNom! Came 8:30AM - My first salt bread experience and that was quite delicious! My first time coming and decided to go in with a bang! Ordered one of everything! Yes. Dropped $100 on baked goods - I figured it would be my husband's and mine's lunch - and can take home for my kids and parents to enjoy. SaltBreads - I highly recommend that they be enjoyed in the first hour of purchase - I noticed when it got to lunch, the bread becomes bouncy and harder... it's not a croissant - it's bread... so definitely had a softer bite when it was fresher. Also when it has cream fills, you wouldn't wanna reheat it. So - remember - buy that salt bread and eat it fresh! Black sesame salt bread was the sweetest one, before the ube... loved the curry bread and the everything bread! Honestly, they're all good... but best when fresh! The focaccia was delicious and soft, I wish i for the salted egg flavored one because the gollai hagun suni flavor had a sort of kimchi spiced pickled flavor to it and could be intense for folks who don't enjoy that flavor too much. Ginger scallion scone was very very good! I highly recommend for my ginger loving folks! It felt like enjoying dimsum in scone form - that's the only way I can describe that one. The pineapple scone was tasty and pineappley for sure - just wish it had a curd fill maybe because the jam topping wasn't enough to satiate the drying factor of the scone. Strawberry cookie was soft and crumbly but compared to the black sesame chewy texture - it was the lesser preferred cookie in the crowd. Don't skip on the sticky toffee red bean banana bread - probably the most surprisingly delicious one for me! They topped it with the walnuts and the bread itself had red beans instead of nuts! The mango sticky rice was the one that the kids fought over... it had similarities to a Filipino dessert called sapin sapin or bibingka - sweet and sticky and yummy! Jasmine lychee cream puff had milk tea cream vibes - good but i would probably pass on the next visit. Service was great - straight to the point! They try their best to get their guests serviced and the line down... I came with 7 other ppl and we all ordered quite a bit so we definitely held up the line some... I would love to come back, but it is a bit difficult. Parking is nonexistent and the hours only go so far! If I do come back - saltbreads will be eaten same hour and the other baked goods will hold for me to have at lunch or enjoy at home later. It's a cozy small shop - so bring a jacket if waiting in the line out the door! Couldn't give full FIVE stars because, $9 is lots of dough for the bread to not sustain more than 2 hours for softness... and the inconveniences of bakery hours, location - it's the only drawback that would have repeat customers...

i tried the regular salt bread & the ube salt bread! the ube salt bread was absolutely incredible & a must-get. packed full of ube cream & had the most gorgeous deep purple color! the regular salt bread was solid, but i do wish the exterior was a bit more crispy & not the best salt bread i've ever had. i came at 7:50am on a wednesday morning (they open at 8am), and there was already a small line forming! definitely come early if you want salt bread, and note that they do limit you to 1 salt bread type per person

Got here on a Friday at 8:15am (15 minutes prior to opening) and was 8th in line. By 8:30am, there were 30+ people. Service was super fast! I walked out with my box of pastries by 8:40am. Overall, the pastries are solid & above average for SF standards, but I wouldn't say they're on the same level as some of the best I've had. The items I ordered: Salt Bread - 6/10. This is good, but it can't compare to the salt breads in Korea... which are truly 10/10! Ube Salt Bread - 8.5/10. As an ube fan, I am obsessed with the ube cream in this!! Might be some of the freshest ube cream I've ever tasted! Japanese Curry Potato Salt Bread - 7/10. Loved the curry potato filling! I put this in the fridge & ate it later in the day. I heated it up in the oven at 350 degrees for a few minutes. Sticky Toffee Red Bean Banana Bread - 8/10. Extremely moist banana bread. I'm a red bean fanatic and enjoyed the texture that it added. Red bean and banana together creates such a unique flavor... kinda tasted like date cake! Gollai Hagun Suni Focaccia - 6.5/10. The focaccia itself is incredibly soft and fluffy. Perfect texture. The flavor itself is interesting... it tasted less Asian than I was expecting. My husband enjoyed this more than I did.

sosososoos popular! line was abt 20-30 wait. but they have so many pretty pasteries. most of the popular ones were sold out by 10:30am on a thursday work day. salt bread gone by 10:30am, which is what i was excited for :( got the strawberry calamansi mochi. it was pretty yum! texture wise makes me eat it a lil slower so i can enjoy it better! i would come again :)

tano has the best REGULAR salt bread in san francisco. hands down, personally. its about time i wrote a review for tano. + i've been here far too many times (receipts being all my photos), even though its SOOO out of the way for me, early, and so restrictive, it's really BECAUSE their regular/og salt bread is truly their BEST item on the menu and worth it most times i can get it. ITS SO SIMPLE but done right and out performs any gimmicky flavor imo. the flavor of salty and butter, texture of MOIST (really crucial cus i feel most in sf lean on the DRIER side, hence ruining the mouthfeel and taste.) and crispy, size of LARGER BIG BOI, i wish i can buy like 5 of em to enjoy. i always recommend to just enjoy it immediately (if not latest being tomorrow heat up just bit so it's slightly warm.) i tried so many of their items on the seasonal/regular menu, so general observation: all of their fillings are extremely generous (ie: ube/kaya/strawberries and cream) and i personally feel priced fairly for how big the breads are. other items i personally enjoyed are: mango sago cream puff (must get), passionfruit mochi cookie, garlic cream cheese salt bread, guava salt bread, beef rendang salt bread. - item limits, location, business hours, and wait times are atrocious and are the bane of my existence. hence knocking one star off. (if i can just rate their salt bread, that's a 5/5.) average wait time is 30 minutes to 1 hr. always come at opening time, if not, earlier like 30 mins before opening because once it's open, the wait time increases to the hour. it's also extremely crowded in paper son so it can get overwhelming so quickly. if you arrive at 10am, heck maybe even 9am, some items are already sold out, so unfortunate and upsetting. i personally don't care for ube flavored things in general and other items like their scones, focaccia, and some of their cookies. i just feel they doesn't hold a flame to their salt breads BUT THATS JUST MY OPINION THATS ALL. ,,,i wait for the day when they remove the salt bread limits so i can order 5-6 reg salt breads (they had one RARE pop up with shoji where there were NO LIMITS how many you can buy and never since. sad.) until then, i just need to patiently and longingly drag myself to paper son or a pop up elsewhere if i want a bite of that salty, buttery, crispy goodness.

Staff is really kind and patient as you peruse the pastries. Also spotted SJ fave Moonwake Coffee Roasters by the register. Unfortunately I personally did not like the salt breads - probs because I got the filled ones (black sesame and ube). I liked the filling, but the salt breads were ironically too salty for me and it didn't feel balanced. Lychee cream puff was ok, but stand outs were the focaccia and the sticky toffee red bean banana bread!

I arrived at the bakery before it opened on a weekend morning, and there were already a couple of brave souls in line. I waited only about 25 minutes for the bakery to open, and once doors officially opened to customers, I was in and out in no time with my fresh pastries in hand. I enjoyed my almond croissant as soon as I got back home, and now I fully understand why Arsicault is at the top of everyone's SF bakery list. The almond croissant was still warm, the inside struck the perfect balance between fluffy and gooey (from the almond paste), and the exterior was nicely crisped. The almond filling is super rich and decadent yet not overly sweet. I also noticed - and appreciate - how Arsicault's almond croissant doesn't include toasted almonds on top, since these can often get over-baked and taste bitter. I definitely agree this is one of the best pastries in SF now.

I definitely feel like the team implementing the 7:45AM start time to line up has helped a lot. Not only is it better for the neighbors, but it also makes the whole experience feel a lot less chaotic compared to showing up super early and scrambling to get in line. Everything feels much calmer and organized now. As for the pastries: To be honest, it really depends on what you like. I'm one that gravitates towards pretty much anything with meat and chocolate. Because of that, most of their savory/meaty and creamy pastries are always a must for me. They're super flaky, flavorful and decadent. You can really tell how much time and effort they put into making everything as high quality as possible, especially since you can see them making everything from the window while waiting in line. All in all, I think there's been a lot of improvement over the past year with some trial and error. Their pastries have always been delicious and I personally think it's worth the wait. I recommend getting to the area closer to 7:45AM so you have a better chance of being towards the front of the line. If not, it's still better to come before opening, I just wouldn't recommend getting there right before they open. By then it's not guaranteed that you'll get everything you want since they do run out depending on how many people are there.

We had the drinks right away and I enjoyed their honeycomb toffee latte ($8.25) while my husband ordered a flavored lemonade. The Honeycomb latte wasn't overly sweet and the honeycomb on top was a nice treat. The honeycomb itself was sweet and crunchy and you can either pick it out and eat it or stir it into your drink and let it melt.
