Sticky Toffee Red Bean Banana Bread
    Cindy L.

Got here on a Friday at 8:15am (15 minutes prior to opening) and was 8th in line. By 8:30am, there were 30+ people. Service was super fast! I walked out with my box of pastries by 8:40am. Overall, the pastries are solid & above average for SF standards, but I wouldn't say they're on the same level as some of the best I've had. The items I ordered: Salt Bread - 6/10. This is good, but it can't compare to the salt breads in Korea... which are truly 10/10! Ube Salt Bread - 8.5/10. As an ube fan, I am obsessed with the ube cream in this!! Might be some of the freshest ube cream I've ever tasted! Japanese Curry Potato Salt Bread - 7/10. Loved the curry potato filling! I put this in the fridge & ate it later in the day. I heated it up in the oven at 350 degrees for a few minutes. Sticky Toffee Red Bean Banana Bread - 8/10. Extremely moist banana bread. I'm a red bean fanatic and enjoyed the texture that it added. Red bean and banana together creates such a unique flavor... kinda tasted like date cake! Gollai Hagun Suni Focaccia - 6.5/10. The focaccia itself is incredibly soft and fluffy. Perfect texture. The flavor itself is interesting... it tasted less Asian than I was expecting. My husband enjoyed this more than I did.

Still worth the wait! I recently came by on a Thursday and waited about 45 min in line for salt bread. I arrived about 10 min after opening so definitely be prepared but I had to try the new flavors. Loved loved the strawberry cream salty bread and the rendang beef was so meaty it could have been a meal in of itself. The flavors are always on point and it's such a creative use of traditional Asian inspired dishes.

I knew there'd be a line but it went fairly quick, waited about 15-20 min. I was disappointed though in the salt breads. They looked gorgeous but tasted too bready. I wanted it to be buttery, airy, fluffy and moist like the ones I've eaten in Korea.

NomNomNom! Came 8:30AM - My first salt bread experience and that was quite delicious! My first time coming and decided to go in with a bang! Ordered one of everything! Yes. Dropped $100 on baked goods - I figured it would be my husband's and mine's lunch - and can take home for my kids and parents to enjoy. SaltBreads - I highly recommend that they be enjoyed in the first hour of purchase - I noticed when it got to lunch, the bread becomes bouncy and harder... it's not a croissant - it's bread... so definitely had a softer bite when it was fresher. Also when it has cream fills, you wouldn't wanna reheat it. So - remember - buy that salt bread and eat it fresh! Black sesame salt bread was the sweetest one, before the ube... loved the curry bread and the everything bread! Honestly, they're all good... but best when fresh! The focaccia was delicious and soft, I wish i for the salted egg flavored one because the gollai hagun suni flavor had a sort of kimchi spiced pickled flavor to it and could be intense for folks who don't enjoy that flavor too much. Ginger scallion scone was very very good! I highly recommend for my ginger loving folks! It felt like enjoying dimsum in scone form - that's the only way I can describe that one. The pineapple scone was tasty and pineappley for sure - just wish it had a curd fill maybe because the jam topping wasn't enough to satiate the drying factor of the scone. Strawberry cookie was soft and crumbly but compared to the black sesame chewy texture - it was the lesser preferred cookie in the crowd. Don't skip on the sticky toffee red bean banana bread - probably the most surprisingly delicious one for me! They topped it with the walnuts and the bread itself had red beans instead of nuts! The mango sticky rice was the one that the kids fought over... it had similarities to a Filipino dessert called sapin sapin or bibingka - sweet and sticky and yummy! Jasmine lychee cream puff had milk tea cream vibes - good but i would probably pass on the next visit. Service was great - straight to the point! They try their best to get their guests serviced and the line down... I came with 7 other ppl and we all ordered quite a bit so we definitely held up the line some... I would love to come back, but it is a bit difficult. Parking is nonexistent and the hours only go so far! If I do come back - saltbreads will be eaten same hour and the other baked goods will hold for me to have at lunch or enjoy at home later. It's a cozy small shop - so bring a jacket if waiting in the line out the door! Couldn't give full FIVE stars because, $9 is lots of dough for the bread to not sustain more than 2 hours for softness... and the inconveniences of bakery hours, location - it's the only drawback that would have repeat customers...

Staff is really kind and patient as you peruse the pastries. Also spotted SJ fave Moonwake Coffee Roasters by the register. Unfortunately I personally did not like the salt breads - probs because I got the filled ones (black sesame and ube). I liked the filling, but the salt breads were ironically too salty for me and it didn't feel balanced. Lychee cream puff was ok, but stand outs were the focaccia and the sticky toffee red bean banana bread!

I got to try their Japanese curry potato salt bread, which came with panoko crusted salt bread, carrot, kabocha squash and the ube filled salt bread. The curry potato salt bread was very savory and delicious, but the highlight for me was the Ube filled salt bread. The sweetness of the ube cream was perfect, and the touch of salt on the bread made it delicious!

WOW! So delicious! The pastries from Tano are so well made. Each one has its own little pop of flavor that really stands out. I was especially impressed by the mango sticky rice pastry--what a fun and brilliant way to turn a favorite dessert into a handheld bite you can enjoy in one go. The salt bread had a beautifully crunchy exterior that slowly gave way to a soft, buttery, pillowy interior. If you're rushing to work or just need a quick snack, these pastries are perfect. Even though they open during busy work hours, it's definitely worth stopping by. As a city girl now, I'd happily make another run to this bakery before heading into the office.

Came to Tano on a Thursday morning around 8:15 AM. There was a short line, and it took about 15 minutes to get to the front to order. By the time I left around 845 the line was around the block so come early! The staff could not be friendlier and filled up a box for me of one of every salt bread plus the sesame cookie. One thing I have to say about the salt bread is while I enjoyed every flavor, they are a bit bigger and quite a bit more expensive ($8-9per, vs $2-3) than what I had in Seoul, and are orders of magnitude tastier when you eat them fresh. Even a few hours will negatively affect the texture. After 24 hours, forget about it. So only order what you will eat immediately! Plain salt bread - when eaten immediately is warm with a super crisp bottom and very buttery taste. Really delicious. Kaya - my favorite flavor, with lots of butter inside to complement the subtle kaya taste. Guava - the least social. It smelled very fragrant, but had less flavor than I expected.

Pretty decent line still! Went at 9:30 on a Wednesday and line was out the door. Got my order (including drink) around 10. The hojicha has a really interesting flavor -- it felt rich and milky. I also got one salted egg york & kabocha focaccia (it's a huge slice for $10) and the garlic cream cheese salt bread. Loved the salt bread & the fluffiness of the focaccia! I want to try their other salt bread flavors. All of their baked goods looked amazing!! Packaging & branding is so cute too. There's limited seating inside the paper son so you might not find a spot if it's a busy day. Dog friendly and staff were very nice!

Horrible line, solid pastries. The salt bread is overrated (the normal flavor one is dry and hard), but the ube salt bread has a yummy smooth filling that makes up for it. Other favorites: - Salted egg foccacia bread - it's very poofy and doughy in texture, and the salted egg flavor + basil is so delicious and flavorful - Butter mochi with soy flour dusting - very buttery, very chewy, great balanced flavor Skip the earl grey banana bread (texture is not as moist as I would like) and the regular salt bread. They have a great range of options for you to sample if you come earlier and they don't run out!

I finally made it out to Tano for their viral salt breads on a Thursday morning around 8:20 am. The line was out the door but relatively short as we waited about 15 minutes. If you're only there for Paper Son drinks, you can scan a QR code and order online instead of waiting in line. Limit of 2 per salt bread flavor. While expensive ($8-9 each), the salt breads were super delicious! Still warm, the outside was delicately crispy, and inside was buttery and fluffy. My favorites were the original and kaya (though this one could've done with more filling, especially compared to the filled ube and guava). The cream fillings were not too sweet, and I'm a big fan of the flaky salt. Later that day, they lost their crispy exterior and dried out a little later that day, so they're best eaten fresh. It was my first time trying salt bread, and Tano definitely didn't disappoint!

This pop-up is located inside Paper Son Coffee and is only open Wed-Friday. We arrived around 10 am and only 3 types of pastries were left: coconut makrut lime scone, earl grey roasted banana bread, and sesame toffee chocolate chip cookie. Since I've been reminiscing about the salt bread I had in Korea, I was looking forward to trying theirs but it seems that they potentially sell out within the first hour. Our favorite was the cookie with the flavor of sesame being enhanced by the salt. The banana bread was a majority balance of earl grey, which I prefer. The scone was light but nothing special.

Salt bread, Japanese curry salt bread, Chinese sausage scone, and mango sticky rice butter mochi
    Christine N.

The baked goods were yummy but would be better warmed. The salt breads were really buttery which can be a good thing but personally the bottoms being soaked is a little too much for me. The cookie and scallion/Chinese sausage scone were delicious but the butter mochi was lackluster as the mango flavor wasn't really pronounced. The coffee was good but nothing special. The storefront was small but clean and service was standard.

We treated it as an adventure and a price to pay for the best rated pastries in the city. Did it once but not sure if I have the heart to wait 2 hours in a queue. The pastries are top notch though. The pistachio cardamom croissant is the bomb, I would get multiples next time. Their savory pastries are amazing too- got the herby olive twist. The Orange rosemary was super good as well, such an amalgamation of flavors and texture. They were sold out of the Coffee Caramel Pain Au Chocolat and a couple other pastries, so missed those. I could see the balloon that held all of the anticipated excitement my husband had of showing me a "new" spot (it was new to me) all but heartbreakingly deflate. Sigh. Not wanting that crestfallen look to prevail, I told him we'd try again. A hole in the wall that is takeout only, the customarily drab sunset weather doesn't do the vibe any favors out here. When it's overcast & cold outside, does anyone want cold pineapple buns to go with it? That was my first experience, so I was curious about how the do over was going to go. Night & day... Yelpess with the mostess Cherylynn was spot on when she said the buns need to be warm & eaten asap. This is key to experiencing a stellar treat over a humdrum one. On our 2nd visit they were hot. They were pillowy. They were divine. Gloomy sunset weather? It could be RAINING outside & I wouldn't care right now. It was a total 180. Butter. Do it! Then dip them in the side of custard that comes with. If you get extra to take home (& you should), all you have to do is be sure to reheat them as per the directions on the box. Just place them on a baking sheet lined with foil, or an oven rack (I've done both, both work), at 325 for around 10 minutes. I think 12-15 minutes is actually ideal. Lovingly, they arranged for us to meet up for dinner Friday night. We had discussed with my cousins before visiting them that my wife wanted to check out two renowned bakeries in the Bay Area, Tartine and Arizmendi. My cousin and her husband graciously and kindly offered to drive us around downtown San Francisco Saturday morning to visit these bakeries and we had such a great time on our personalized Bay Area foodie tour narrated by my well-informed cousin-in-law (CIL). Our first stop on this belly stuffing foodie tour was Tartine, which served one of the yummiest almond croissants I've ever eaten. That pastry alone warrants a visit to this highly rated and highly reviewed bakery. Since our CIL was in the know about The City's downtown eateries and bakeries, he recommended that we start out early to visit Tartine because he said that lines to these places could get crazy long. Thankfully for us, we got to Tartine before it opened and were second in line to enter. Tartine is a well chronicled bakery with locations around the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Seoul, Korea. The location we visited is on Guerrero and 18th streets in the Mission District and it's across from Pay And Save Grocery. Parking might be challenging with street and metered parking. As soon as you enter the bakery, there's a hipster and local mom and pop business vibe. You're greeted by glass cases displaying beautiful cakes, pastries, breads, loaves, scones, and cookies. There are stool seats and elevated chairs where you can eat on planks of wood either facing the steady flow of customers or looking outside. I liked how there were paintings hanging from what appeared to be from local artists. The staff were friendly and took care of us pretty quickly. Tartine was our first stop in what would be a fun foodie adventure. Since I always start my day with a cup of coffee, I ordered caramel cappuccino. The foam on top had a beautifully designed heart from the barista, but I like my coffee sweet and after my first sip, I knew I had to add some type of sweetener. I used a lot of their complimentary honey to make it sweeter. My wife, who works in the baking industry, had placed Tartine on her list of places she wanted to visit to experience their scones and pastries. If my wife knew about this bakery, then I knew that I'd be indulging in baked goods of the highest caliber. Of course I let my wife pick what she thought were the best items, but I asked the customer who was the first person in line what Tartine was known for and she said their almond croissants, so when it was our turn to make our selections, I asked for Tartine's Frangipane Croissant, which has almond-cream filling and brandy. Brandy?!!?? Honestly, I don't remember tasting any brandy, but what I do remember was flakiness of the croissant, the thick cut almonds on top, the heartiness of the croissant, and the generous amount of almond-cream filling. It was a beautiful looking pastry and the taste was even better. Seriously, one of the most memorable croissants I've ever eaten. My family and I are blessed to have family willing to take time out of their morning to take us on a guided foodie tour to some iconic bakeries and local eateries. Our first bakery stop was Tartine and after eating that delectable almond croissant, the other bakeries would be hard pressed to beat them.

Our cousins were familiar with both bakeries and graciously volunteered to be our foodie guides as we drove to these two bakeries Saturday morning. After visiting Tartine and B Patisserie, Arizmendi was our final bakery and our last stop on our Bay Area foodie tour. Just like the other two bakeries, Arizmendi was a popular destination, it was different than the other two in the selection of the pastries, and I highly recommend their corn cranberry scone and their cheese focaccia. Arizmendi is also located in the Mission District specifically on Valenica and 24th Street. The bakery is in between a Royal gas station and the KitTea Cat Lounge. Parking consists of street parking and just like the other bakeries, parking could be challenging, but Arizmendi is worth the trouble parking and walking to this confectionary paradise. This bakery is a business where their baked goods are enjoyed at home since there is minimal seating. What's unique about this bakery compared to the other two is how the baked goodies are selected. It is self serve where it's a little hectic trying to maneuver around other customers to pick the pastries and breads you desire. The young black lady behind the register who checked us out was courteous, friendly, and took care of us quickly. As you enter Arizmendi, there are four wooden display cases with plexiglass holding scones, cinnamon rolls, muffins, pies, croissants, focaccia, cookies, and shortbreads. As you peer through the plexiglass to decide what to select, make sure to grab the provided wax to pick up your baked goods and place them in the provided bags. One of our friends asked us to grab scones, so scones were one of the items we knew we were going to purchase. My wife selected other items, but I asked her for a focaccia because my cousin said that Arizmendi was know for their pizza breads. I highly recommend you purchase their corn cranberry scones. These scones are hearty, the cranberry is plentiful, and I really enjoyed these while I was drinking a coffee at home. The focaccia I picked was a cheese focaccia made with poblanos, kale, and queso fresco. That square pizza bread was a savory revelation where I devoured that as snack after heating it in our home toaster oven. It was cheesy, the poblanos and kale were tasty, and I completely agreed with my cousin's assessment about their pizza bread. We're so grateful to our cousins for taking valuable time to serve as our foodie tour guides during our trip to San Francisco. Bay Area denizens are blessed to have three bakeries where they can satisfy their pastry, dessert, and bread cravings. We're fans of Arizmendi's scones and pizza bread.

They offer a variety of baked in house items that range from the savory ( mushroom and cheese "tart") to the sweet of banana croissant invention. EVERYTHING is tasty. Items are limited in quantity, so go early. The mushroom green onion tart is delish! It has a generous amount of mushrooms, manchego cheese, and light green onions. It's a lovely flavor profile. The only downside is that it's not given to you heated. Eating it cold was not optimal. The banana "tart" because I don't recall the exact name, is to die for! It's sweet, it's sooo good! It's like banana crack. It has caramelized parts to it, and you won't want to share it!! The double backed pistachio/blackberry croissant is a food group all its own. It's everything you want in a pastry! The Thai tea was just OK. Super pricey for the amount. It's not that traditional taste profile. The people that work at Neighbor big house are friendly, expedient with service, and this definitely needs to be on your secret places to try when you're visiting SF. It's not that we want to gatekeep, but you are gonna want all these pastries to yourself!
