    not-ube tart
    Julianne C.

i had been wanting to try breadbelly for awhile, and i'm glad i finally got to stop by the new building 12 location in dogpatch. i got the not-ube tart which was dense with purple sweet potato. the meringue and shaved salted egg yolk were an interesting combo that gave a delicious profile. i hoped the tart itself would be a bit more crispy, but overall it was still quite good. while i understand the quality is very high, i think the prices are slightly inflated. the service was standard, order at the front and wait for your order (if you get something from the pastry case, they will bring it right away). at busy times, outdoor seating may be difficult to secure, but there is plenty of inside seating inside the b12 building, which is still a bit empty as other spaces get populated. i'd likely return to breadbelly with a group so i can try multiple things!

Black sesame cookie and asparagus egg salad sandwhich
    Francie M.

Their Dogpatch location is located in a cleverly renovated warehouse by the waterline. We ordered: - Asparagus egg salad sandwich: I wasn't sure if I would like this but it blew me out of the water. The bun was the softest milk bread texture in a hamburger bun shape, the egg salad was perfect (not too mayo-y, not too sweet), the asparagus was tempura fried which contrasted nicely with the peppery arugula and spicy pickled mustard greens(?) (coming from a non mustard girl!). A truly unique play on a traditional egg salad sandwich - Black sesame cookie: a sandy shortbread style cookie filled with not too sweet caramel. The bitter black sesame and sweet caramel balanced each other and the cookie was the perfect sweet treat size - The kaya bun: very messy to eat as the concha-style topping crumbled off with any movement. I think it would be better to get their OG kaya toast (though I couldn't see it on the menu but saw people with it, so ask about it) - Black sesame cappuccino: this was more of a miss. I felt the black sesame was too strong compared to the espresso so I felt like I was drinking straight syrup, but it was also not sweet enough? I also feel like this drink would be better in a ceramic mug rather than paper togo cup but it didn't look like an option Logistics: - Indoor seating is further inward in converted warehouse, not right next to cafe. Outdoor seating directly in front of cafe - Limited street parking nearby but walking distance from bus and muni T line

    Basque cheesecake

Oh my gosh, we went to the new Bread belly that's in the Dog patch area and it was fantastic. We got a lot of different things to have there and for takeout, but I think my favorite thing of all was their butter! It was so salty and yummy. We had two different kinds of milk, breads, croissant, oh the basque cheesecake was to absolutely die for it was so good. We got the breakfast sandwich which had a bit of a kick to it, but it was really good. A ham and cheese sandwich and the shrimp patty sandwich. All of them were amazing. It's fun to eat there because you can watch people playing pickle ball or paddle ball. I don't know what it's called. I really loved my latte and my carrot orange juice that was freshly squeezed. We found parking, but it wasn't so plentiful.

Make sure you like banana before ordering this drink! Ordered on the QR code before realizing I'd like a light ice adjustment. Service was so fast, the drink was brought to my table before she could even pass along my ask. Arrived shortly upon opening, tons of seating upstairs lined with wall outlets for laptop work and free WiFi (code at the table). It wasn't until I took off my noise cancelling headphones, that I realized how loud the ambient noise and music was. Good to keep in mind for meetings.

The cafe was spacious with a second floor, and the interior was filled with cozy Asian fruit artwork and contemporary furniture. It was too late in the day for matcha, so I opted for a banana oat hojicha latte. It was refreshing and a bit too sweet for my taste, but the hojicha was roasty and tasted like quality tea. The banana flavor was a bit artificial, reminiscent of that Korean supermarket banana milk. We also tried the popcorn chicken and galbi patty melt. The popcorn chicken was crunchy with a bit of sweetness at the edges, but some pieces lacked crispy batter or substantial meat. The mochi pieces were a bit hard for my mouth as well, slightly harder than al dente. I wonder if it would taste better if heated up further. Galbi patty melt lacked any flavors I'd associate with Korean food. It was a pretty basic croissant sandwich with cheese and cooked onions. The meat was satisfying to eat after wandering around town for a few hours. Overall, the menu was inventive, but the food didn't impress me too much. I'd come back to try their melona matcha, though.

We ordered the Blue Plate Special and the Chili Scramble to share. And of course, we had to order the New Orleans style beignets. I mean, how can you see beignets on the menu and not order them?! Everything was prepared well and delicious to the very last bite. The portions were generous too. So generous, in fact, that we basically rolled ourselves out of the restaurant after the meal. I was so full that I ended up taking a food coma nap all the way home! I've been on a bit of a fried chicken streak lately, so I think I'm going to put a pause on having it again for a while... Overall, a really enjoyable meal with good food, generous portions, and great company. Definitely a place I'd be happy to come back to... although I may need to pace myself a bit next time! This place is very charming, super clean, a lot more seating and even outside seating. Best to go during the week. Went for breakfast w/a friend. Quite a few options to choose from and reasonably priced, as current prices go. Friend had coffee and Chiliquiles. He loved them. My 1st impression was "the presentation" was so unappealing. Everything piled on top of itself, like a slop. Maybe this is the norm, I don't know. I was torn between a Mexican scramble or Crab Benedict. Our serve Krista (who was very nice and attentive) recommended the Benedict. Sadly I was not impressed. It was served on a dry biscuit (flavorless) plentiful crab cakes (also a bit flavorless) and Hollandaise sauce that also needed "something". Taters were cooked well, but again, lacking flavor and pretty skimpy serving. Think I need to come back for maybe lunch, because it is charming and pretty easy to get to. Hoping my stars "go up" on my next visit.

I came here in the morning and ordered a hot Cuban Latte, which was delicious. I asked for it to be less sweet and it distributio did have the perfect level of sweetness for me. It could've been a little hotter. Where the star points come off is when I came back for lunch. I ordered the Sicilian Sandwich which has mortadella, salami, provolone, cornichons and aioli on focaccia. The man taking my order was unclear on whether it was a sandwich or a panini. After a little bit of confusing back-and-forth, I was told I could order it as a panini, which I did. The flavor was really good, but here's the problem... Great care must be taken when crafting a delicious sandwich. Attention should be paid to the distribution of ingredients across the bread. Whoever put this sandwich together, slapped a little aïoli on willly nilly, piled all of the meat and cheese in a stack and threw on a few Cornishons that had been cut in half. The result was that the edges of the sandwich were nothing but dry bread and all of the flavor was in a few bites in the middle. Plus, the unwieldy chunks of cornichon kept escaping. Clearly whoever made this sandwich never heard the phrase 'crust to crust is a must'. The other thing that bothered me was they have examples of each menu item on the counter and the sandwich that I received was much smaller than the example. The café itself is minimally, decorated and clean. Definitely a decent place to grab a coffee and quick bite if you're waiting for somebody at UCSF. But if you're fussy about your sandwiches (like I clearly am), you might want to be specific with your expectations when ordering.

But I've since bought stuff here to use their bathroom (multiple times) in a pinch, have luxuriated in their stellar calming atmosphere, enjoyed baked delights even though I paid too much for them, and (last time) received a handwritten Where's George? bill in change that sadly wasn't a match likely because the amateur Georger entered it as a Series of 2017 bill instead of a Series of 2017A. You might also remember that I two-starred the original The Plant location in the Marina long before it closed, and I more recently three-starred the location in SFO's Terminal 2, although The Plant's website makes no mention of any of its physical locations, strangely. (They do helpfully explain that it costs about $500,000 to franchise your own location.) Here's what to expect. It will be quieter than you expect when you enter. Perhaps there will be no one at the counter, but that just gives you more time to peruse the baked goods and sweets in the case. When someone does come to take your order, it will be a very nice gentleman--or at least, that's whom I've always gotten. Everything is overpriced, although it's not quite as overpriced as some other places, which should make you very angry, because it's really overpriced. But move beyond that. The baked goods and sweets are pretty good. Not worth the sticker shock, but still good. The brownies are the one exception. They're not sweet enough for how large they are. If they were smaller, they'd be fine, but eating an entire dense brownie without the sweetness makes it feel like you're chewing your way through a piece of flotsam you found in a bog. The food is very good. I've enjoyed both salads I had here. The ambiance is a super sneaky six stars or so. There are different tables and chairs at different heights. There's at least one coffee table, and I could see getting some serious work done here, although the need continually to buy (expensive) stuff to laptop-camp might make that nigh impossible. I've definitely read a few chapters in a comfy chair and have never felt rushed out. They now contain all kinds of businesses, from cafes to cheese shops to bike shops to bakeries to industrial designers.
