Mr. Bread is my favorite bakery on Taraval St. The buns are so fluffy soft. I try to stop by when I'm in the neighborhood. About $2-3 a bun. It is such a treat to have their egg and ham buns. Good job everyone at Mr. Bread.

Mr. Bread was beloved on Yelp in 2025. Cash Only.

Mr. Bread is known for its Portuguese Egg Custard Tarts and Egg Custard Tarts. So delightfully yummy! I reheated them at home at 350-370 degrees for 10 minutes. As of 12/8/25, it was $2.30 for a regular Custard Tart and $2.60 for a Portuguese Custard Tart. I think the Portuguese tarts did taste a little better. Go early enough so they don't sell out. I went 12:15 PM on a Monday and had no trouble. After we entered, a line formed behind us. However, after eating lunch in the area, there wasn't a line after 1 PM. CASH ONLY. Closed on Tuesdays. Bakery is a Chinese dive. Narrow customer area barely wide enough to form a single line. Walls are covered in paper ads, menus, and pictures. I was too panicked and crowded to take pictures, focused on paying and getting out. Besides custard tarts, there are other Chinese pastries. You can also order a cake here. Mr. Bread is located on Taraval St near 19th Ave or Highway 1. You need to find street parking. Buy a lot of custard tarts! They are comforting and addictive.

The first day of December and it was a sunny day so I went on a Holiday stroll in the Sunset Strip of San Francisco also known as the Sunset District. San Francisco is one of the best places to get a dessert. I am in search of a tart which has its origins in Portugal but has spread to countries like Brazil and China. These egg tarts are also known to be from Hong Kong and Macau and part of Cantonese cuisine. The search for the best Portuguese egg tarts and Pastel De Nata has me going to Taraval street .The Sunset has lots of places which serves and egg tarts such as Pineapple King and Sunset Bakery. One place which has one of the best in San Francisco for Portuguese tarts is Mr. Bread. This spot also serves lots of pastries such as egg tarts and buns . Although I am of Portuguese heritage and the Portuguese tarts was on my mind I had to try their buns. I like all types of buns but the curry beef buns were the best I had in San Francisco. It was savory and the buns were soft. So delicious. I then had the Portuguese tarts and I would say it's my personal favorite. It was not too sweet and it was fresh and velvety. It was smooth and tasty. It wasn't flakey like most of them in SF. This place is also the go to place to get customize cakes. They are closed on Tuesday and it's cash only . I now only wonder where is Mrs.Bread ? They have the Cream, Curry Beef, Pineapple, Taro , Tuna "Bun " and other pastries which are well "done" and the Portuguese egg tart is my favorite "one " in San Francisco as I enjoy the First day of December on Cyber Monday at the Sunset strip under the "sun" "Mr. Bread "has a good bakery "spread "go here you won't be "misled "when it comes to Portuguese tart the taste is miles "ahead "I feel fortunate to live in San Francisco the place I was Born and "bred "

4 Portuguese custard tarts and 2 eggs custard tarts

Mr. Bread for the win! At $2.8 for the Portuguese custard tarts and $2.30 for the egg custard tarts they are perfectly sized treats. You can be satisfied with 1 (or 4..and they are not bite sized.. they're a few bites bigger). To be safe and because I didnt want to share.... I got 6...The 2 of us inhaled them all on the 20 minute drive home. Also they were piping hot..so obviously had to be eaten immediately. So doesn't like these fresh out of the oven.

I've heard good things about this place so decided to stop in to try it out. Egg custard tart: the crust was thin, yet buttery and flaky, however, the custard was not as smooth as other places. Pineapple bun: decent, but I've had better. Wife cake: flaky crust with a good amount of filling Overall, it was good, but I still prefer the bakeries in SF Chinatown in terms of taste and price. That said, this location is much more accessible, especially when it comes to parking. Friendly service. Cash only.

Cash only. They are known for the Portuguese egg tarts, but I actually really loved their ham and egg buns. I like how the bread is soft and sweet, and the ham/egg is salty. It makes a good combo. You can buy them à la carte, but remember to bring cash. The line can get long, but I think it moves fairly quickly. Great Chinese bakery in the sunset. (I tried the Portuguese egg tarts years ago, so I can't remember how good they were.)

Small mom and pop Cantonese Chinese bakery in the Sunset that reminds you of the early 80's/90's 25c cocktail buns and pineapple buns. I normally get a couple of each, The prices are prices are now at the 2025 rate but the taste is really good still. This place has no seating so it's just a takeout spot. They also have a small fridge with pictures of cakes but I have never tried one. They also make both po tat ( Portuguese custard tarts) and dan tat ( regular custard tarts) . Both are good but I prefer the classic dan tat just because the skin is a little more fluffy and less crispy and the custard is more moist. People order half or dozens of both so you can't go wrong. On the weekends there is usually a line and if you go during the peak time you might have to wait for fresh tarts. They will tell you to come back in 15-20 mins if they are out but will save them for you if you prepay. Cash only spot so bring those dollar bills ( a $20 probably) since you'll get a variety of items here. TLDR; All items are pretty good here. Small lines are expected on weekends and possibly waits for tarts if you going during a peak time.

Coconut custard pastry. Despite the name, no custard. Moist, fresh, and the perfect amount of coconut! $2.50.

Near-perfection in a tart. What more is there to say? Sure, they have a small selection of other pastries, but the star of the show (by a highway mile) is the Portuguese Custard Tart--a masterclass in taking a basic concept & executing flawlessly on the fundamentals. The perfect amount of flakiness in the crust, the right amount of buttery without being oily or overly greasy, fresh custard, served warm(!). My mouth is watering just thinking about it. And a steal at $2.80 per tart (cash only). Bring lots of cash from the ATM. Exercise restraint. You'll want to keep coming back for more.

I was in the mood for some buns, so I stopped by Mr. Bread. There was a short line when I went but it went by quickly. This is a great spot to pick up a box of baked goods. Everything is reasonably priced and yummy. I got a few pineapple buns, barbeque pork buns, egg tarts, Portuguese egg tarts, and ham & egg bun. They are cash only!

    Taro Buns!!

Everyone talks about their Portuguese tarts which yes are good and basically all their egg tarts sell out quick. Their baos, dare I say, are equally just as good. Their pineapple buns are so good. The pork buns are full of meat and so satisfying. Lastly, the taro buns, for a taro Queen is pretty up there. Tons of taro inside. Don't sleep on Mr Bread Baos. They're def fire!

Was walking through Taraval to look for something to drink, and stumbled upon this small mom and pop bakery. I've walked passed this place many times and always wondered how small businesses like this have lasted for so long, until today. I was definitely able to grab a water bottle, but also thought why not try one of their pastries. There I saw some fresh baked Portuguese Egg Tarts and thought I definitely had to try one! It was warm, jiggly like a souffle, and so smoooth with every bite! I made the mistake of only buying one, but if you're looking for a damn good egg tart, this is the place! Make sure to bring cash because it's cash only!

    Chinese sponge cake
    Sally C.

This is our go-to Chinese bakery for sponge cake--and it never disappoints. We've been coming here for years for every special occasion: birthdays, Mother's Day, holidays--you name it. The sponge cake is our absolute favorite. We've ordered both the 8-inch round and the 1/4 sheet, and they're always a hit. The cake is fluffy, soft, and fresh. The fruit on top is refreshing (although I do wish the middle tier of the cake had more fruits), and the whipped cream is light and not overly sweet. The flavors are perfectly balanced. We always call a few days in advance to place our order and schedule a pickup time. The bakery is small, but they run things very efficiently. There's no dedicated parking lot, so we usually find street parking or have someone wait in the car while picking it up. They also sell other Chinese baked goods, and everything we've tried has been very good--tasty and reasonably priced. Highly recommend this spot if you're looking for fresh, delicious Chinese sponge cake and classic bakery items!

I would've never known about this compact family-run bakery on Taraval were it not for a local food vlogger named Mei Mei, who drove her mom all around the city to try all the available custard tarts. After going to all the usual suspects in Chinatown and elsewhere, most of which I've tried, they stopped here and raved about the tarts. OK, that was enough of an incentive for me to take the L line over. Well, on my first visit, I didn't get here until about fifteen minutes before closing. I should've known they'd be sold out of tarts. Since the owner caught me looking forlorn, I impulsively bought two items, the $2.50 Coconut Strudel, a flaky and spongey pastry shaped like a thick stick (photo: https://yelp.to/Oy6uNnWCpF). The other was the $2.50 Custard Horn. Although bigger than a tart, it made a nice substitute (photo: https://yelp.to/Lf-7jwN-vY). Both were satisfying treats, but hey, they weren't tarts. That didn't happen until today when I found myself in Parkside at lunchtime. It dawned on me that I could finally get a tart. Sure enough, they had them fresh on a tray on top of their display case. They had Egg Custard Tarts and Portuguese Custard Tarts, so for only $4.90, I bought one of each. They shared a thin, flaky shell. The plain egg one had a perfectly smooth custard filing (photo: https://yelp.to/PlcQMQDtyq), while the Portuguese one had a nice toasted top that lent a welcome texture to the tart (photo: https://yelp.to/xizR5mxluF). Thanks Mei Mei, and thank your mom. Is the place still open? I've been calling since yesterday and no one picks up. I live an hour and half away I wanted to know how much is the Portuguese egg tarts are and place an order. Anyone can help? Thanks

yep! they are open but they get really busy in the early mornings. i recommend calling maybe at 9 or 10am (?) when the rush is over. they do take bigger orders via the phone so make sure to call them for that (the number on google is correct)… Read more

Does anyone know if they are open? I drove by today and no lights were on and doors closed. I couldn't stop to see what the signs on the door said.

They are closed today and will reopen tomorrow

Is Mr bread open now , May 17?

As of 3/18/2020, can anyone confirm that Mr. Bread is open during SF's shelter in place order?

I was disappointed to find that the business is currently closed from April 1st to April 30th. There is a sign on the door.

Can anyone please give me a working phone number for Mr Bread?

From their May menu, I ordered the Strawberry Rhubarb Cruffin and the Pistachio Cardamom Sugar Croissant. And you know what, just wow... I was shocked. These pastries are seriously next level. The cruffin was my favorite, buttery, unbelievably flaky with layers that shattered perfectly when you bite into it. The strawberry rhubarb filling had the perfect balance of sweet and tart, while the orange blossom mascarpone cream outside had a very light floral flavor. These combination was just god made. The pistachio croissant was also another level . Super buttery, crisp outside, soft inside, with very (very very) heavy pistachio cream filling that tasted very nutty and rich but not too sweet. The cardamom sugar coating made it even better, and aromatic. Every bite tasted so heavenly. Definitely the best bakeries I've had in the Bay.

Anyways, this is on my bakery rotation anytime I'm in the area and looking for a treat. Tartine Bakery is a Mission gem. It's beloved by so many folks in the city and in the Bay. They're known for their flaky and buttery pastries, which I'm a fan of! As well as their breakfast items, such as sandwiches and coffee. This location is a corner shop with communal seating inside. It's a small shop and mainly operates as take-out, which I normally do. Service moves fast for the most part, and workers are nice. My go-to pastry here is their Morning Buns. It's literally one of my favorites. It's sugary-sweet, light and flaky, and has a nice flavor from the zest. This go-around, I got a Canelé de Bordeaux instead, which was fabulous--soft and moist, crunchy yet slightly chewy, and with a nice caramel-rum taste. I'd get it again. I got my family a variety of baked goods, and they all seemed to enjoy them. Tartine is a staple. If you're visiting, you must go! If you're a local, you've probably gone countless times. Lovingly, they arranged for us to meet up for dinner Friday night. We had discussed with my cousins before visiting them that my wife wanted to check out two renowned bakeries in the Bay Area, Tartine and Arizmendi. My cousin and her husband graciously and kindly offered to drive us around downtown San Francisco Saturday morning to visit these bakeries and we had such a great time on our personalized Bay Area foodie tour narrated by my well-informed cousin-in-law (CIL). Our first stop on this belly stuffing foodie tour was Tartine, which served one of the yummiest almond croissants I've ever eaten. That pastry alone warrants a visit to this highly rated and highly reviewed bakery. Since our CIL was in the know about The City's downtown eateries and bakeries, he recommended that we start out early to visit Tartine because he said that lines to these places could get crazy long. Thankfully for us, we got to Tartine before it opened and were second in line to enter. Tartine is a well chronicled bakery with locations around the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Seoul, Korea. The location we visited is on Guerrero and 18th streets in the Mission District and it's across from Pay And Save Grocery. Parking might be challenging with street and metered parking. As soon as you enter the bakery, there's a hipster and local mom and pop business vibe. You're greeted by glass cases displaying beautiful cakes, pastries, breads, loaves, scones, and cookies. There are stool seats and elevated chairs where you can eat on planks of wood either facing the steady flow of customers or looking outside. I liked how there were paintings hanging from what appeared to be from local artists. The staff were friendly and took care of us pretty quickly. Tartine was our first stop in what would be a fun foodie adventure. Since I always start my day with a cup of coffee, I ordered caramel cappuccino. The foam on top had a beautifully designed heart from the barista, but I like my coffee sweet and after my first sip, I knew I had to add some type of sweetener. I used a lot of their complimentary honey to make it sweeter. My wife, who works in the baking industry, had placed Tartine on her list of places she wanted to visit to experience their scones and pastries. If my wife knew about this bakery, then I knew that I'd be indulging in baked goods of the highest caliber. Of course I let my wife pick what she thought were the best items, but I asked the customer who was the first person in line what Tartine was known for and she said their almond croissants, so when it was our turn to make our selections, I asked for Tartine's Frangipane Croissant, which has almond-cream filling and brandy. Brandy?!!?? Honestly, I don't remember tasting any brandy, but what I do remember was flakiness of the croissant, the thick cut almonds on top, the heartiness of the croissant, and the generous amount of almond-cream filling. It was a beautiful looking pastry and the taste was even better. Seriously, one of the most memorable croissants I've ever eaten. My family and I are blessed to have family willing to take time out of their morning to take us on a guided foodie tour to some iconic bakeries and local eateries. Our first bakery stop was Tartine and after eating that delectable almond croissant, the other bakeries would be hard pressed to beat them.

My favorites are the cheese roll, the chocolate thing and the almond cookie. All of the treats have the perfect balance of sweet and savory. And, they have stuff for breakfast, lunch and maybe even dinner. The customer service is great too. All of the cashers at the front are patient and kind to me when I give bills. They all ask how the day is going, and one gave me $2 off! The bakery is well decorated from the inside and out. They're tiny details like the cute, hand drawn 'Dog Parking' sign, the banners and drawings from other kids, and all of the carefully arranged baked goods. I think that Arizmendi is a part of my life that I will miss as an adult. I hope you enjoy their service as much as I do.

When my wife and I started planning our leisurely drive to San Francisco, we intended to visit two…read morebakeries, Tartine and Arizmendi, with the goal of purchasing scones and other pastries/desserts. Our cousins were familiar with both bakeries and graciously volunteered to be our foodie guides as we drove to these two bakeries Saturday morning. After visiting Tartine and B Patisserie, Arizmendi was our final bakery and our last stop on our Bay Area foodie tour. Just like the other two bakeries, Arizmendi was a popular destination, it was different than the other two in the selection of the pastries, and I highly recommend their corn cranberry scone and their cheese focaccia. Arizmendi is also located in the Mission District specifically on Valenica and 24th Street. The bakery is in between a Royal gas station and the KitTea Cat Lounge. Parking consists of street parking and just like the other bakeries, parking could be challenging, but Arizmendi is worth the trouble parking and walking to this confectionary paradise. This bakery is a business where their baked goods are enjoyed at home since there is minimal seating. What's unique about this bakery compared to the other two is how the baked goodies are selected. It is self serve where it's a little hectic trying to maneuver around other customers to pick the pastries and breads you desire. The young black lady behind the register who checked us out was courteous, friendly, and took care of us quickly. As you enter Arizmendi, there are four wooden display cases with plexiglass holding scones, cinnamon rolls, muffins, pies, croissants, focaccia, cookies, and shortbreads. As you peer through the plexiglass to decide what to select, make sure to grab the provided wax to pick up your baked goods and place them in the provided bags. One of our friends asked us to grab scones, so scones were one of the items we knew we were going to purchase. My wife selected other items, but I asked her for a focaccia because my cousin said that Arizmendi was know for their pizza breads. I highly recommend you purchase their corn cranberry scones. These scones are hearty, the cranberry is plentiful, and I really enjoyed these while I was drinking a coffee at home. The focaccia I picked was a cheese focaccia made with poblanos, kale, and queso fresco. That square pizza bread was a savory revelation where I devoured that as snack after heating it in our home toaster oven. It was cheesy, the poblanos and kale were tasty, and I completely agreed with my cousin's assessment about their pizza bread. We're so grateful to our cousins for taking valuable time to serve as our foodie tour guides during our trip to San Francisco. Bay Area denizens are blessed to have three bakeries where they can satisfy their pastry, dessert, and bread cravings. We're fans of Arizmendi's scones and pizza bread.

They offer a variety of baked in house items that range from the savory ( mushroom and cheese "tart") to the sweet of banana croissant invention. EVERYTHING is tasty. Items are limited in quantity, so go early. The mushroom green onion tart is delish! It has a generous amount of mushrooms, manchego cheese, and light green onions. It's a lovely flavor profile. The only downside is that it's not given to you heated. Eating it cold was not optimal. The banana "tart" because I don't recall the exact name, is to die for! It's sweet, it's sooo good! It's like banana crack. It has caramelized parts to it, and you won't want to share it!! The double backed pistachio/blackberry croissant is a food group all its own. It's everything you want in a pastry! The Thai tea was just OK. Super pricey for the amount. It's not that traditional taste profile. The people that work at Neighbor big house are friendly, expedient with service, and this definitely needs to be on your secret places to try when you're visiting SF. It's not that we want to gatekeep, but you are gonna want all these pastries to yourself!
