When we told our taxi driver the address of the restaurant, he said "That's Block, isn't it? That's a good place, you won't regret it." So I definitely had some expectations for our experience. We were seated almost immediately, and ordered their calamari large plate and their Japanese cube steak small plate. The calamari was really soft and delicious; the sauce was tangy and spicy too! I wish there was more salad / larger portions, especially for the price but was happy overall! The steak was so-so. I'm not a huge steak person and that's all I could taste despite there being a puddle of sauce it was soaking in when served. Would've also liked more flavor / more meat for this especially. This is an extremely small restaurant right on the corner of Caribou and Banff. There's like 6 small tables and a bar that seats about 12 people. Fortunately for us we got in before it was completely packed. But during the course of our meal, a waiting list was started, and with about 4 groups on the list it was about a 30 min or so wait. This is an Asian fusion place that serves small sharable meals. But we ordered enough to be satisfied for the night. 1. Kimchi gyozas- 6 dumplings with a light dusting of kimchi with a chili soy dip. Tasted pretty good. Not too oily. Great way to start our meal. 2. Asian lettuce wrap- 6 or so lettuce wraps with a choice of meats, we had the beef brisket with a choice of a thai or peanut sauce. Meat was cooked well. Nice and tender. Sauces were a good compliment to the wraps. 3. Humboldt calamari- not your traditional small bits of fried calamari. But the long tentacle parts. Was a bit mushy. Texture was not what I'm use to in my calamari. Sauce wasn't too spicy. Wish they had it on the side instead of drizzled all over the dish already. 4. Hanger steak- really moist piece of steak with a tasty chimichurri sauce. It was rediculously tender. Even with the butter knives provided we were able to cut thru it. We also ordered several drinks. But my most favorite was their mommas ice tea. Had a good amount of peach in it. It was really sweet in a good way!! The other 2 drinks, kiwi lime pie (to bitter) and dragon's mistress (specialty ice festival drink-dragon fruit) were disappointing. Customer seevice was hit and miss. Some of them were bleh. Seemed short in regards to how busy they were. And another who was really friendly, conversative, smiled, and attentive to ALL the tables. A cool little place to try when in Banff. Lives up to its reviews! This was our first meal in Banff and it was unforgettable, everything was so delicious. We had the oysters, poutine, curry katsu, pork lettuce wraps and bison flatbread. Oysters were really refreshing with a light cucumber taste. Poutine - I usually don't like but this was a great rendition of it with thin crunchy fries, cheese, gravy, arugula and shredded duck. Katsu - Tastes like a typical delicious curry katsudon! Pork lettuce wraps - one of my favorites! Pork was flavorful and the lettuce was perfectly shaped and crunchy! I was really pumped up to try Block Kitchen and Bar when I was in Banff. A lot of research was put into finding a place for dinner and after reading all the positive reviews and looking at the menu, Block was finally decided upon. Unfortunately the experience was just mediocre. If I could give 3.5 stars I probably would but since I can't I think it's more accurate to round down. We split the Takoyaki, Calamari, Gyoza Dumplings, and the Salmon Tartare. I thought the Calamari was easily the best dish and that was followed by the Takoyaki. I really disliked the Gyoza Dumplings but my date seemed to enjoy them so she gladly took that plate from me. They seemed to have a lot of interesting looking cocktails and we both had a Gin Beetroot Sour which we both really enjoyed. I'm not too sure if I would go back to Block Kitchen and Bar. They have a lot of appealing looking dishes on the menu but the ones we had just didn't live up to expectations. I'll probably try some other places in Banff before I give Block another try. read more

My husband ordered something whiskey related and was pleased as punch - I can't recall what it was, but definitely wasn't up my alley. We shared Edamame, which was served cold (shelled) and seasoned with sea salt, chili flakes, sesame oil. It was great, a good bit of heat with balance of saltiness and crunch. Yum - paired perfectly with our strong drinks! We also shared the Smoked Bison Flatbread, which was topped with pesto, onion compote, arugula, goat cheese. Also, a great dish. I am soooo glad that we saw the reviews for the Block. This was easily the best food we had in Banff. Lots of the food has a Japanese-y twist. It's not always traditional, but it tastes really good! - Beef tataki wraps were lovely. It's basically lightly seared beef, stuffed with salad with a tasty sauce. - The takoyaki were excellent. This was a huge surprise, as I can be a bit of a takoyaki snob. - I liked the karaage and the gyoza. They are not particularly special, but they are done well. - The beetroot and za'atar flatbread was really tasty too. Lastly, the cocktails were beautiful, and slightly too strong for me! I went into a happy-tipsy-love-Banff state, and floated back to our hotel despite the snowstorm. read more

Seriously, This is the best restaurant in Banff. We wondered in because the menu had so many items we enjoy. Then we were greeted by Eran, who was so much fun and knowledgeable. He guided us through the menu answering all our questions. Then, lo and behold, the owner walks in with his lovely wife; their Son was already there. We chatted about everything under the Sun and found out they had another restaurant, Shoku Izakaya, right around the corner in Banff, which we will be visiting tomorrow night. Beyond that, there is another restaurant in Victoria, Block Kitchen and Bar, How fortunate for us, as will will be able to swing by there as well in the next few nights. read more

Tapas style restaurant which is the perfect way to try multiple dishes without over-eating! Very friendly staff. Cozy area with limited seating so try to come at an off peak time. "Blocktails" were amazing to start with. Really great bartender with a Hemsworth brother accent to boot. I tried my friend's margarita which was perfectly refreshing and not syrupy at all. I got the Unbeetable which is a gin drink with beet juice, lemon, and chickpea brine?! It was SO good! We ordered a few things to eat and they were all amazing. Soup of the day was a pleasantly spicy Thai soup. Calamari was so tender without any rubbery texture. I really enjoyed the raw beet slivers in the zen salad. But the best thing we ordered were the pork belly lettuce wraps. The pork belly was cooked to crispy perfection and the kimchi and sauces served with it helped to complete the perfect bite. Alright, this place is awesome. First of all, tried to go here for dinner one night, but we were told it'd be a 30-45 minutes wait. We were very hungry from hiking and driving all day, we opted to go elsewhere. It's very small and seating was very limited. We tried again the next day, around 1 pm and got seated right away. We loved the inside and presentation of everything. Very hip and just cool. Our servers were awesome. Checked in on us just the right amount of times and made sure everything was to our liking. We ordered the Silk Road chicken skewers, shoestring fries, and the red devil calamari to share. The chicken skewers were my favorite! The breading on the chicken was excellent and the dip added to the awesome flavor it was marinated in. The dips that came with the fries were fun. I also liked the flavor and breading of the red devil calamari. I will say the only fault was that the calamari was slightly chewier than most calamari I get (and I get calamari everywhere), but that was very, very minor. Don't get it twisted.. food was good. We ordered trio dip, calamari (as it is their top recommended item via yelpers) and cold noodle dish. We sat at the bar and it took some time for someone to take our order. The restaurant has about 7 tables with the remaining seating area located at the bar. It was a full house but we couldn't help but feel neglected since 1) we sat at the bar and that was the central location staff station 2) everyone was tended to besides us. And to add insult to injury one of the servers was in training. And I understand some patience can go a long way but why do we need to be splashed and ice thrown at while she tries to make the cocktails. Overall, food was great but It was an unpleasant experience. We came to banff from the states for my birthday and initially had the mind set to not dine out. But after hiking 15 miles around lake Louise we wanted a big decent meal. It took 45 minutes for our food to be done. We seen other patrons sit down after us and leave b4 us. That's when we took initiative to ask the person behind the bar (bc at this point idk if the people there really 'work' there) the status for our food. They said it should be done soon. I did not expect to find even passable Asian fusion in Banff, but without even looking for it I stumbled across some of the better fusion I've had, and bar far the best meal I've had in Banff over two visits. The service and atmosphere at Block were both excellent, and it was refreshing to see a contemporary atmosphere in comparison to all of the chalet style tourist trap restaurants nearby that try to serve you Moose burgers or something of the like. Block knows what it is and they own it whether you're a tourist or a local. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? Banff is pricey, but Block keeps things reasonable especially at lunch with large portioned main dishes that are under $20 and smaller plates that are under $10. My girlfriend and I split a naanwich, pork belly bao, and some soup and none of it broke the bank. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? Let me start off by saying that this Asian inspired Thai soup was next level, and we both ended up using it as a topping of sort or dipping sauce for our respective sandwiches. Excellent. From there, the bao was solid, and while the naan was a bit over cooked and the chicken a bit too dry, the naanwich was fine. Single Star. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? This place was amazing!!! My family of 5 went there and ordered a lot of tapas and big plates to share and everything was absolutely delicious. The three dips and naan was so good, especially the baba ghanoush! We also ordered the Tako Yaki, which went pretty fast at our table. The absolute best things we had were the Ahi Tuna Tataki, the Korean Fried Chicken, and the Asian Lettice Wraps with Beef... the beef for the lettuce wraps was so juicy and tender and the tuna was served on a delicious seaweed salad. Last but certainly not least, we finished the meal with the Korean Fried Chicken, which should be criminal for how delicious they were. They were sweet and tangy, served in this glaze and they were gone within seconds. Additionally, we also ordered the Pork-Kimchi Goyzas, and personally, I thought they were decent, but my brother cleared two plates of them. The drinks were delicious and I would 100% recommend the passion fruit mojito- our table ordered and at least 3. The lavender drink and the margarita are pretty good as well. As for the service, our waitress was very friendly and was very patient with our family. The food came out very fast. Adorable little restaurant. Menu is interesting- Asian fusion. You order tapas style, but we ordered our own dishes since we were starving after our plane in was delayed. Got the grilled hanger steak and was asked if I wanted it rare or medium rare. While I stated medium rare, when it came, it was definitely rare. However the chimichurri sauce was absolutely amazing and def made up for it. And the fries that came with it were delicious, I don't know what kind of seasoning was on top but I want more of it! The "Duck Poutine" was presented with a nice amount of gravy, the duck had a freezer burn taste, and the fries were salty. And again I'm not disputing the price of the burger, but rather "It has to be perfect for $19.75". There are better options in Banff. The restaurant is small, and I wouldn't recommend it for large groups. The staff really tried to keep the furniture tight, as to accommodate more guests. In other words they crammed you right in.
