Do I like trivia? Let me tell you something, I am the trivia f*cking master. Upon the suggestion of a good friend, I finally came down here a few weeks ago. This was a special trivia night, because it was the holiday edition. No, we did not win but we were in the Top 3 the entire night. Out of about 12 teams, we were in the Top 3. Was it because I was there that night? Duh, isn't that obvious? But even if there was no trivia night here, I would still make it a habit of dropping by. I love the booths that have little swing doors so no one can get in. And they're big enough so you can fit four people comfortably. Or six people, presumably really good friends, very comfortably. My drink of choice is the Six Point Ale. It's got a nice taste to it, and it's got enough kick to make me think I'm Ethel Merman. And I have to get the mini burgers as well. Come on, I'm a dude, and burgers and beer go a long way. His music is great, he'll sell you two gigantic salty skunky pickles from Brooklyn Brine for a dollar, and Monday nights are the best happy hour special in the city -- the very good Black Rabbit Ale, for only $3, ALL NIGHT. He'll also see that your cup overfloweth with salty peanuts, so you're sure to spoil your dinner. It's your fault, not his. There's a really old working 70s TV in the corner that brings back vague memories of the days when I ate handfuls of ragu-orange carpet laced with my own boogers. A long time ago.. I swear. And if that's not enough to entice you into the rabbithole, there are sexy little booths along the wall so you can have your own semi-private soiree, alone or with a date, as you please. After a failed attempt at presenting ourselves at this establishment two weeks ago, my friend and I made the jaunt again to Greenpoint to meet up with friends. To be honest, I wasn't in a good mood. I made an unfortunate choice to drink red wine in the middle of that day and had taken three trains to get to the place. But opening the bucolic, and not at all ironic, farm door changed all of my red wine, mass transportation induced grogginess. The Black Rabbit has beautiful dark wood that makes up the bar and the booths, it's little details like this that make the place decidedly non-divey. A smiling bartender and attentive staff goes a long way, so do $3 cans of Guinness. If you get a chance to, I highly suggest sitting in the wood booths on along the wall opposite the bar. Each booth is adorned with black wood swinging privy doors that politely encase you away from the other people in the bar. The best part? A button underneath the lamp in the booth can be pressed to summon a server or bartender. Pressing it lights up a red light bulb above the booth. Genius. To me there's nothing like having hours of conversation along with many beers, and this place had that in spades. There's a small patio in the back with a couple of picnic tables, but it closes early on account of the neighborhood. (10 pm) They serve food as well, Rarebit Tots and the trout came highly recommended by my friend. The bar was full service, took credit cards, and had a good combination of microbrews and cheap beers. There's something to be said about a place that knows what it is, and where it is, and Black Rabbit raises above that to create a nice neighborhood feeling utopia. read more

THERE IS NOTHING THAT I LIKE MORE THAN WINNING. Apparently, it is possible to win Black Rabbit's trivia. I know because I did, along with my super star team. It's the kind of trivia that you need to attend if the night at Pete's Candy store makes your head hurt. Bonus questions get you shots of absinthe sours (kinda gross), and the winning team gets a prize of $25.00. I have yet to come in at any position other than first after the last round (First time there was a 5 way tie for 1st...did not win the tie breaker), and I never plan on losing again. Food was bad, service was bad, bartender didn't even know which beers they had in bottles, and couldn't produce a menu. Confused because the place looks super cute and is in a great location. Nothing vegan on the menu, came in for trivia and they wouldn't let me eat a prepared dish I brought in from the garden around the corner. According to Wikipedia, oil is believed to have been seeping into the groundwater in Greenpoint since 1950. Even if I could notice the signs of black-mold infested waters invading Black Rabbit, I would still come here. I had heard and read about how cool Black Rabbit was, but seldom did I make the trip to Greenpoint. Then, an old friend moved to Greenpoint a couple months ago making it obligatory that I finally go here. Even if there was a birthday party of like 20 people, cake and all (and shots), on a Saturday night when I got there*, I would still be excited to pony up to the bar. I would be very sad that all of the booths with their black swinging doors and call lights were full and that the back area was stuffed due to said birthday party, however, I would push through to drunktown with some assistance. A nice set of taps including Six Point, Gaffel Kolsch and Heffewiezen made the fact that I sat right in front of the bartender, with two friends, for eight minutes before he acknowledged that I was there, a little easier. In the end, the service was good as it should be when you continually push your empty mug toward the edge of the bar for a refill. Somehow and for some reason, we had a plate of pickled vegetables and they were quite good. In the end, I would rather keep Black Rabbit in the hat, all for myself, but it can't be done because people know about the cool booths that I so desperately want to sit in to soak up the enjoyable ambience of this hare. There is nothing worse than obligation! Except for obligation with a side of absinthe. Listen--Absinthe tastes like chewed up stink beetles. Yes, everyone should try it once but...blehhh and gggach and yelchhh! Black Rabbit is a gorgeous bar with a fantastic vibe. I love the dark booths with doors. Its very isolating- which is good if you're whorey and bad if you're social. The booths also have individual light bulbs by which you can summon your server with the flick of a switch. I must warn you however, that you are "obligated" to show adult-like restraint and not flip it on every two minutes. (The servers hate that. They also hate when you sing,"Roxaaaane, you don't have to put on the Red Light") In summation: beautiful bar, pricey specialty absinthe drinks, booths with doors and light switches and non-prostitute servers. Its a nice place just don't let all of that peer-pressure put you into a position where you feel obligated to finish a pricey specialty cocktail that tastes like chewed up stink-beetles. Q: What team of Yelpers (yours truly, Briana M., Carlos Y., and some norms) won not only the ultimate prize, a $25 bar tab, but also three rounds of absinthe shots here last Tuesday? A: 8==D. Seriously. That was our team name. And no, it doesn't really work when you say it out loud. "Bonfire of the Manatees" and "Ninjas for Stealthcare Reform" do. And the group with the best team name wins a round o'shots, so for god's sake put your heads together! Lovely, dark bar with an enviable backyard area (can be reserved for free, up to groups of 30) and private booths (getting busy behind the doors is recommended, but keep your shirts on). The bartenders are charming and seem amused by Trivia Night instead of muttering to themselves (this probably has something to do with the fact that trivia-loving crowds are always jolly drunks...with the possible exception of sports trivia crowds). Bonus for all you cheapskates: $2 beers all night after Trivia wraps up! 3 Stars for too high expectations, but a decent bar It's all about expectations, I guess. I really wanted to love this place, and from all the other reviews I actually assumed that I would go and fall instantly in love with the atmosphere... which is why when I went, it was a teeny bit disappointing. I absolutely love what they are trying to do with the beautiful dark wood and low lighting and cozy booths and fireplace... those things sound incredible, no? However, I'm not crazy about the way that these incredible things have been executed here. For instance, I love low lighting, but it's so dark that the bartender was using a flashlight to find things last night. Overkill, maybe? I went two times, because after a mediocre first-date experience, I felt it was worth another shot and went with on a friend-date-thing. First time, I sat in one of the booths, second time at the bar. The booths are not ideal for two people, because you feel sort of lost in them, and super far away from each other. They would probably be perfect for a larger group, so you could fill the space and feel nice and snug. The bar was a better experience, and we watched Evil Dead 2 on this great old TV they have in the corner. The service seems really friendly and fast, and the mini hamburgers were tasty and each had a pickle slice and a little olive on top. Yum! Came with 3 two-bite burgers and some ruffley potato chips for like $8 I think. Not shabby. AND last night (Monday) was $3 Brooklyn Lager all night, so that was friggin great. Alls I'm saying is, I don't love the atmosphere as much as I want to, and there was NO ONE there on a Monday night at 11pm (I guess I'm just a lush). They have killer drink specials, and it seems like it'd be a fabulous place to come with a larger group. Black Rabbit is yet another new bar in the Greenpoint Ave/Franklin Ave area in Greenpoint, but it has a distinctly different feel from the others. Enter through the red door nestled in the black brick facade and take over a small booth. Each booth is enclosed by a set of swinging double doors, lending to a nice bit of privacy, yet not tall enough to close you off from the rest of the goings-on around you. Each booth is equipped with a "service" button on the wall, which you can press to light up a red light bulb outside your booth to alert the servers that you need assistance. I really haven't seen anything like this place before - I suppose it's ever so slightly gimmicky, but not nearly enough to be a turnoff. The wine and beer list is good, and though I haven't yet tried the welsh rarebit, I am really dying to do so. The food menu is brief but everything sounds tasty. For some reason I just couldn't stop staring at the ceiling, which was painted a nice dark red. I think it's because if I were to paint my apartment red, that is the red I would choose. The bar has a bit more of an upscale vibe than others in the near vicinity, but not so upscale as to feel snooty. I look forward to returning and trying their food! read more

The last time I came here was actually extremely depressing. It was for the pre-Valentine's Day Smiths-themed speed dating event (billed as "you could meet somebody who really loves you"), which ended up being cancelled due to the unfortunate female:male ratio of, no joke, 15:1. The bartender took pity on all the pathetic females that showed up and gave everyone a free drink, although I politely declined and decided it was best I took my sorry self home. Meh, I can't get down with this place. I've been repeatedly and while I have fun, the place is frustrating because it's always just a bit off. It's REALLY dark in there (no I don't wear glasses) but it is straight up hard to see in there. The booths seem like a cool idea but they feel sunken, and the doors make you feel trapped in there. Maybe awesome if you're packed in like 6-deep. Also, yeah you get to push a light to get drink service but every time you have to wait forever to get basic things like menus or the check, nevermind drinks. If you're gonna do this attend to it well or just have people go to the bar. This all makes me sound crotchety but drinking shouldn't need a strain. read more

I love this place. Adequate beer selection--their house ale is good and cheap at $4/pint--and decent wines. Very cozy ambience, cool little booths with swinging doors that are perfect for a date or a catch-up session with friends, nice outside area with picnic tables, board games on hand, decent pub food and a trivia night. I get really annoyed with the people who give this place a bad name because they stopped by on a busy Saturday night and didn't immediately get served. You are the people who ruin these types of perfect pubs and I'm always happy to know you won't be coming back. read more

I had such a lovely time the other night that I decided to write my 1st ever yelp review! First off, the cozy interior is just perfect on a blustery day. Their house drink is so fun and creative- it has both tequila and Lambrusco in it! The best part, however, was the bartender. She clearly has so many regulars who come to listen to her great playlist, hear funny stories and appreciate her delightfully quirky style. She runs the show and I loved it! She is frank and doesn't coddle guests- but that just made me trust her suggestions all the more! everything I ordered was just delicious. I'm giving it two stars, but with a few changes, this could easily be a four star establishment. I like room for improvement and growth. Good thing - The bartender was cheerful and reasonably attentive. Bad thing - She forgot two of the three drinks we ordered. Good thing - The bartender made the drinks reasonably well. Bad thing - On a Saturday night, there was only one bartender, which led to really slow service. Good thing - The fact that Black Rabbit has booths with little switches for waiter service is super cool. Bad thing - The service started off slow, and later devolved into non-existent to the point where we had to deal with the bartender again. Good thing - The sound system seemed to beplaying Talking Heads' amazing album Remain In Light upon arrival. Bad thing - It ended up being the first four songs of the album before going back to the top track. Then the mix went to a "best of 2nd wave ska" sampler. This was fine, until the mix started repeating itself to the point where it was really annoying. Good thing - The decor is unique and interesting. It seems sort of dark while still being inviting. Bad thing (maybe) - The ceiling is solidly blood red painted wood, from what I could tell. For whatever reason, I kept focusing on it and it bothered me. There seems to be a new bar or restaurant opening in Greenpoint quite frequently and before you know it our little neighborhood is going to be overtaken (it's already on it's way...fast!) Black Rabbit is a great hang out. I went for Happy Hour and they had Brooklyn Brewery Oktoberfest specials which is great considering what time of year it is; although last night I was going as much to cool down from the HOT October day as I was to try a sampling of the fall brew! I didn't try any of the appetizers although people near us had ordered the Welsh Rarebit and it smelled awesome...can't wait to go back for a try. The atmosphere is perfect for just lounging around...I love places that are dimly lit but not dark...I hope I'm making sense. The red ceiling and dark woods made me feel like I was at some bar back home it had a lodge-y sort of feel, I loved it. Not the greatest bar, when one person complains about noise level from a birthday party on a Saturday night, and the bartender is taking the one customer's side, it really deters new customers from wanting to come back. If there was an option to give it zero stars that's what I would've done. The bar ambience was great at first as it allowed customers to borrow a number of board games like connect four, scategories, jenga, etc. However limiting the noise level of customers when we are having a fun time and talking over the loud music or playing board games as they are offered are uncalled for. People who like to have fun and talk or enjoy good drinks and beers shouldn't come to this establishment. Highly unrecommended for people to go to this place when you have rude customers who can't let others enjoy and have a good Saturday night. If this is the the type of bar it is going to be, the owner needs to have a sign that says "no fun allowed" and "please limit your noise level to squeaks". read more

The black rabbit wins big on atmosphere. Go there with a crew and take over the back or plan a caper in one of the booths. You'll feel like there's a naughty little bunny snuggling in your pants. Nice call buttons, great details, excellent lighting. The wine selection is shockingly poor for the prices, and a disservice to a place that is otherwise very tasteful. Just like it's Greenpoint location, the Black Rabbit is stylish yet unassuming with an old world charm. It has prewar light fixtures, a working fireplace and booths outfitted with saloon-style swinging doors, which are so private that you need to button-activate a lightbulb to get your waiter's attention. Wouldn't of given this place any stars but had to to share my experience. Went in with my cousin sat at the booth directly in front of the bar and they never even came and took any orders or asked if we wanted service (in a spans of 20 to 30 min). Walked over to the bar asked if we could order and had a complete blank stare from the person behind the counter. Nice looking place but horrible service will never come back. Absolutely lovely, every details in this new Greenpoint bar is well thought and charming. It has a very posh feel to it, setting it apart from the other establishments in the area. The staff is helpful and very polite, helping give the place a feel of elegance. Read the previous review for all the details, personally the closed in booth made me feel a bit claustrophobic. But that is a personal problem of mine, otherwise it is the perfect spot for meeting with friends and having an interesting and private conversation with your choice of beverages. 3 words for you: Sunday Night Bingo. 3 more words for you: SixPoint Sweet Action. Awesome beer selection, awesome ambience, and a kickass game of bingo on Sunday nights make this bar a damn good time. I mean come on, the bingo prizes include pictures of jesus, beer rags, and etchings of the pope in a glass - how could you not want to win that?! The booths are saloon style, where you can close the doors and press a red button whenever you need service from the waitstaff. The crowd is sweet and the staff are good people and you feel at home. They have a little beer garden out back which I imagine is nice in the summer, though I've never been out there. The beer selection rotates but they always have the great local stuff, so I'm a fan. This is a review of the TRIVIA NIGHT and not entirely of the bar itself. The trivia here is just terrible. I used to come consistently, weekly, with a group of other dedicated trivia fans, and they dropped off week by week. Last week a co-worker invited me to go, and as I hadn't gone in a few weeks, I thought I'd drop by and see if it had improved. It had gotten worse. Firstly, they broke our team into 2 teams because there were 7 of us and the limit is 4 people per team. Around the 5th round we realized that our team of 3 people was tied for 1st place with a team of 8 people. How did that happen? Then the tie-breaker was an ill-phrased question and we lost because of their mistake. My team knew the correct answer (the population of New York City a few years ago) but he'd asked for the population, assuming the current one, so we adjusted accordingly. Then he says the answer is the population from 2007. Ugh. We were just tired by that point. Speaking of which, and this is the really annoying stuff . . . they draaaag on each question and make you wait as long as possible for the next question, which is really irritating as you lose momentum, get bored, and it's also just a blatant attempt to make you drink as much as possible. Secondly, the trivia has become so low-brow that I can't believe they'd call it Nerd Alert. Last year there was a good mix of actual knowledge and pop culture. Now it is almost entirely pop culture. They always have a movie trivia round, but then they include another round devoted entirely to the movie Sixteen Candles. The last time I went there was a Harry Potter round. Who are these people? I don't know, but they're not nerds, that's for damn sure. I don't know . . . maybe people were complaining that trivia night went by too fast and was too difficult, but no one I know was. Also, most of the trivia nights I've been to offer prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, but this one just has a prize for 1st, which is pretty lame. And their bonus shots, which you win, are a punishment: disgusting absinthe shots or Wild Irish Rose (cough syrup). Maybe they're trying to be funny. It was funny the first time. Not anymore. As for the actual bar, I have few complaints. They used to have free bar snacks, now they don't. I ordered the fondue (one of 2 vegetarian options, the other being the chesse plate, which is fine -- and as another person said, yeah, no vegan options, unless you count mixed olives as an option, i don't know, so you better smuggle in something): my friend made a joke about the stale bread. I just sighed and ate it. Also, the amount of fondue is smaller than it was last year. I'm just saying. So, other than the food, I suppose the drinks and the atmosphere are fine. But considering I only used to come here for the trivia, I doubt I'll be stopping by anytime soon. My friends refuse to go, and I don't know why I asked them to keep going in the first place. There are much better trivia nights elsewhere. I'm going to Pete's Candy Store next time. read more

The pretentious euro pub booths don't really work that well. The owner is neutral, bordering on unfriendly. The bartenders are mostly awful, especially Denis, who may be the worst bartender in NYC! ouch. He usually plays a Cream wanna be band, ?? The outdoor space is nice and mellow and there is occasionally a beer or two on tap that you actually want to drink. Not that expensive. Food ... don't bother. Great bar if you're 24 and have been in NYC for a month. good luck. read more

Black Rabbit - Pubs Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

I've been here twice now and this is everything that I could want in a bar. Affordable drinks, lots of choices, good bar food, friendly people/atmosphere, beautifully decorated, and not too loud, but still a lot of fun. I've had so much fun both times I've gone here (both in the same week). One for a Desk Set librarian Trivia Night and the second time for a regularly scheduled Bingo night. Both times it delivered. The fondue is delicious, the mini-burgers are great, the various cocktails are fantastic. This place is worth the trek from Manhattan. I'm going to try to go here regularly. Home run. Edit: Let me just add that the Gargoyle absinthe cocktail is great. If you're into licorice (which I am). read more

As soon as you walk in you're automatically at ease. Its dark and magical feel made me smile with delight as I took in the white Christmas lights strung about the entire bar. The saloon doors on the tables towards the front of the bar give a private feel, and the movies on the old fashion TV are always interesting, making for good conversation. We barely noticed that they also have board games as well, while we sipped through their excellent beer selection on tap! But I'm a sucker for board games in bars, so I'm looking forward to a good game of jenga on my next visit. They have a back yard too, that closes early so I didn't get a chance to see. I'm excited for this place. It makes me proud to say I live in Greenpoint. The crowd here is cool and laid back. The bartender has always been nothing but awesome every time I've gone in there. Can't say enough good things about here guys. We rented the entire bar on Sunday for my baby shower. There were about 60 of us. The communication with the owner was great! He was very cool, didn't ask for a deposit, and was very helpful to decide the quantity of food. He even suggested to decrease the amount of food, how honest is that?! He also suggested various pricing options for drinks but we ended up asking him to do a open bar for us and put it all on one tab. He did ask for a minimum there which was very reasonable. When we arrived, we were welcomed by the owner and his wife. Very nice people. The bartender that day could not be cooler. She took a really great care of us. She payed a special attention to me, the pregnant one, and constantly offered mock cocktails and water. The only waiter was so sweet and helpful! He was very busy with us but was always kind and attentive. We ordered all the food choices: mini burgers, veggie platters, cheese platters, etc, everything was tasty. We loved this place before but after the shower it became very special to us. The whole baby shower cost was very affordable especially in comparison with other places we considered like Milk and Roses, Waterfront in LIC, catering, Riverfront, Maella. read more

My first visit to black rabbit, I went on a weeknight for some quiet intellectualism with two friends. Beautiful space, like everyone else, I *loved* the private box seat bell table service. Apparently there's working fireplaces. Surprising selection of decent whiskeys. There are also lots of fun board games to play from your booth. Makes me sort of wish I lived in Greenpoint. Casual, cozy. Lots of little drinking nooks like high-walled booths and tucked- away tables. Some of my favorite beers on tap and they have a pretty good house ale. Board games and various editions of trivial pursuit, and in the summer time there's a nice backyard patio. Tuesday night trivia has made me a regular. 5 rounds of 5 questions each. Bonus questions will get your team a round of free shots (!) and best team name wins a prize. The highest scoring team wins a $25 bar tab. The last round is usually an impossible "before and after" structured question involving disparate subjects like Eddie Murphy movies combined with 18th century French literature and I'm usually not sober enough to compose a guess. This place is so cool - a definite to start out a night or finish off with a nightcap. The booths are private yet enchanting, so dark and fun. My sister and I felt funny pressing the service light at first but soon we were all about it. The fondue (no pot, cheese is just hot) was delish - next time I'll have to try it with tater tots in lieu of the traditional bread. Good selection of interesting beers - Happy Hour goes to 7! Yay! Stopped in for a quick bite and pint on a sweltering July day. Glad I did. It's cool (both temperately and in attitude), has some solid beer options and the food - while limited - was served quickly and was delicious. It's an interesting space with high backed booths that have swinging doors (!!) and a backroom for larger groups as well as a garden. Randomly went in here one Wednesday night with my fiance - we were just looking to grab a beer and a bite to eat and ended up staying all night. THe ambiance and great bartender sort of drew us in...we felt like were taken back in time or something - huge deer heads on the walls, random pieces from the early 50's decorated the walls. Plus the cheese fondue was totally declasse but delicious. Did I mention there was a Connect 4 board game and we played all night? Makes for a good time. Great beers on tap too. read more

I discovered this little gem, this evening. Nice looking pub. Dutch door in the front looking in on the place. Dark wood bar and booths that have swinging doors...very unique. I drank a Sixpoint Brownstone while chatting with Kent, the owner. He told me that the place had opened about 3 weeks ago. He has a pretty good selection of beer and liquor and food. I didn't eat anything there but I noticed mini cheeseburgers and Welsh rarebit on the menu. Kent has a portrait of his great grandfather, who came over here from Ireland hanging behind the bar. To me this place is my get away from away.. Love the random crowd that comes here. The staff is great very pleasant. The service is fast and the drinks are not expensive at all.
