Nice spot for a quiet drink. Went there on a Sat night. I liked it because it was quiet. There were people and groups buzzing around but at the same time it felt the right combo of being in a busy place, but quiet too. Decor is very kitchy, reminds me of a rocky mountain lodge/part saloon. It's small, a few booths with tables but the rest is mainly stools around the bar. I liked that there was no blasting music and was just a nice place to grab a drink with a friend. read more

Overall rating: 4.7 I absolutely loved this bar and will become one of my go tos when I'm in the area. Super chill, laid back, rustic energy. My review is for the bad experience I had with the bartender girl tonight. I asked for a non alcoholic drink, as I'm pregnant. She made my cocktail with alcohol and I tasted it immediately - I asked her "Is this drink definitely non-alcoholic?!" She said - "oh no, there is gin in it" and smiled. ........ Shocked I asked why she did that Her answer was "I thought you just didnt like the taste of alcohol so I made it with lemon and mint" I'm in my first trimester and it's extremely dangerous for me to drink. I was shocked and in disbelief for the rest of the night. Completely inappropriate, rude and unprofessional. She apologized and brought me a virgin drink after, but the night was ruined and I'll probably now spend the rest of my pregnancy worrying about possible damage this could have caused my baby. I used to like this place but I won't risk coming again. UPD. Her name is Davida Lentini. She was actually dumb enough to abuse me here on Yelp after reading this review. Felt clean and spacious but the leather booths and warm decor give it a comfortable/cozy feel. This is an old reliable bar. Tattoos are de rigueur (yes I had to lookup the spelling) both among the lovely female & male staff as the patrons. I say this as a member of the old cabal myself. I go here & am guaranteed not a whiff of manhattan, for it is too far a field, an outpost town that you won't find yourself just passing through, but rather making a point to go here to get away from the things that bother you about the city. I have no idea why I never came here before. I live in the area, but for some reason never thought to stop by. My friends and I finally did on Saturday night and had a great time. First off, this is so not a dive bar. It's way too cute and welcoming to be a true dive. Sure the drinks are really affordable, but with the exposed brick, perfect lighting and lots of booth seating, it had more of a sexy wine bar feel than a dive bar. When I think of dive bar, I think of the Levee, I think of crappy bathrooms with doors that don't lock, I think of crappy beer that's super cheap... you get the idea. They have a really nice selection of draft beer. Something for everyone and its mostly microbrews, which is most appreciated. I ended up ordering a vodka soda, which was absolutely perfect. The bartender on Saturday night, Cody, pours by far the best mixed drink I've ever had in NYC. My fiance, who was a bartender for many years, watched him make my drink and told me "now that's how its done" and even tried my drink to confirm it was perfect, which it was. So many bartenders can't mix a damn vodka soda. It's either too strong or too light. So thank you Cody for making my night. Also, Cody was the best barteder ever! He was SO freaking attentive and the best multitasker I've ever seen. He was the only one working and he handled it like it was no big deal. I never went w/out a drink. He made sure my friends and I were taken care of. He was funny and chatted with us when he had a chance. The bar was rather busy, but he was on it. So impressed! The music was awesome, a ton of oldies. The whole experience was just great. We drank, we hung out, we had a blast and it seemed like only locals came here, which is fine by me. I like avoiding the douchebags that have infiltrated the area, trying to see where hipsters hang out and the next place to be featured on Girls. So bullshit. Which is the opposite of this place. Wow, first review of this place eh? First we should all be thankful that Van Gogh's is no longer there. Any place with a "Ladies Night" is creepy and wrong and should be bulldozed by those of us who live in the neighborhood. I'm weirded out by Production Lounge as it seems out of place but I must assume it's catering to some of the different groups that make the neighborhood interesting and there's room for everyone so whatever. Most bars just go "Yeah we've got red or white" - Booths and lots of 'em - Nice minimal natural wood decor - Cheap. Everything was surprisingly reasonably priced Cons: - The bartenders/barhand had stacked the free jukebox because we were there for a while and never heard anything we played. Had the place been packed I would've understood, but there was also the fact the barhand kept cranking the volume and singing along suggesting it was his pick. -Seriously small glass of wine. Like, a Port glass of wine, not a wine glass. - Bartender was underwhelmed but still taking forever just taking people's orders and then making portions of people's orders simultaneously. Like, a guy ordered two drinks and got one, then he gave another guy a beer, then another guy a whiskey, then came back to the original guy and gave him his second drink a few minutes later. It's a round, not a multi-course meal of drinks. The bar wasn't packed at all but that didn't stop him from keeping me waiting forever to even take my order and took the orders of 2 other friends who walked up to the bar long after me before he took mine. I understand hooking up friends, but as a new bar in a saturated neighborhood, fucking over customers isn't the most awesome business model for establishing yourself and staying in business. Long and short: This place did a good job with the decor, the selection, the prices etc. The service part needs work and can sink a place like this. I'll give it one more try because it may have just been a fluke of a night but I noticed other patrons making gestures of disbelief throughout the night as well. It's not a dive bar - ok? Dive bar is like, MARS BAR in the east village of yesterday... It's more like a romantic french bistro - kid you not... The jukebox makes me want to learn hard about classic rock... Everything was wicked cool sounding. I tried out a song and was pleasantly surprised. We had a booth, the light was right... the dark n stormys were pretty good, real ginger beer. Somehow though I felt sort of hungover the next day and I only had a few drinks. I must disagree with the first reviewer (J.R.). First off, I actually liked Van Gough's as it was a true dive-bar in a neighborhood where the new flock of bars tends to caters to young professionals and hipsters. Lady's Night is creepy and wrong with a summary bull-dozing? Okaaay. It might be kind of lame but it's more of a sign of desperation to draw in clientele than anything else. But onto Oak and Iron... The decor is very tasteful, with dark-toned wood and furniture. The designers kept it simple, with a couple of flares and decorative designs that work well with the space (like the taxidermied pheasant and drift wood above the bar). That bar top itself is very fine. I'm also a fan of the booths which makes group drinking that much easier. The drink selection seems very well balanced, with a number of beers, wines and whiskeys (whiskys), including several Rye whiskeys which I was very pleased to see. Prices are reasonable. The music selection in the jukebox leans more toward the country/American traditional/folk with some Indie (Cash, Hank, Death by Murder, Rachel Brooke, Tim Easton, Modest Mouse), which is to be expected from the owners of Lady Jay's. This is made all the better since it is FREE. As the place was sparsely populated when I stopped in last night, I didn't experience any delays in hearing my selections played. Perhaps I had a different bartender but the fella who was manning the post when I was there was great. He was friendly and engaging and even allowed me to put on my iphone to play a few tracks I had mentioned to him. Perhaps the bartender could afford to be this way since there was only a handful of customers in the bar at the time. But I also feel it's worth pointing out to the first reviewer that taking care of drinks based off complexity during a busy period is totally accepted behavior for a bartender. If it's busy and I order three cocktails and then another guy orders a bottle of Bud, I sure as hell hope the barman would have enough sense to take care of the Bud first. I love Oak and Iron as well as its sister bar, Lady Jays across town. They are both dog friendly which is top of my priority list. Both bars are also laid back with a great music selection. O+I has a bit of a divey feel without being actually dirty. The beer list is awesome and extensive. The bartenders are all excellent mixologists and if you feel like experimenting, they're happy to oblige. It's a great place to try new things. Crowd is young, 20s-30s with a lot of tats and smiles. Very gay-friendly. Off the beaten path so you can usually grab a seat, none of that bridge and tunnel mess that is Williamsburg these days. Great place to talk and meet people. Stop #2 on my recent Tour de Greenpoint... honestly I didn't get to spend as much time as I would have liked here, but I think it would be worth a stop in if you're in the area. The decor was cool... not the biggest fan of taxidermy but whatever... I did think it was really cool that they had a carbonated wine on tap for I think $6 (unfortunately I don't remember the name of it). Prices seemed pretty reasonable and the crowd that was there was very friendly/low-key. My only concern would be whether or not this bar could compete in the long-run with places like Black Rabbit and Lulu's (the other two places in Greenpoint I visited)... hard to say right now but I think the potential is there. The bartender gave me a slice of watermelon on a warm May Monday night. And pretzel sticks. Laid back atmosphere here with affable bartenders. The people here are generally nice and come to relax with little or no discernible pretension. Or it may be indiscernible because of the ideally dusky lighting. As far as Greenpojnt bars go, I would say this is better than average! The bar itself is nice inside with (at least on the night we were there) super great music! I will say the seating is odd, like the booths look like they will fit four but only fit three in a straight line, so for groups some will have to stand or you'll have to find a place by the window. They have a good drink selection as far as beer goes. The thing that I did find odd was that they make "classic" cocktails, no menu. Ultimately, you will see these are etched on the large back mirror broken down by liquor types. It to me, was very confusing especially because you almost have to switch positions to actually read the entire mirror. Most of my group had beer and I a Manhattan! Now not to be a drink snob but I prefer drinks to be made properly. My Manhattan was good but served over ice, no bueno! I would most likely return to Oak and Iron as it was a very good experience, I wished the Manhattan was made differently! read more

I wanted to write this "review" in response to the negative review I received from Katie B in regards to her and her boyfriends visit to Oak & Iron this past Sunday evening. Please let me begin my response with a personal apology for your unsatisfactory experience at our lovely little saloon. When all is said and done if I'm behind the stick it's my responsibility and you were less than happy so again, I apologize. Please allow me to explain your evening from another perspective. Anything worth doing is worth doing right, I'm sure you would agree Katie B. I love making cocktails and, according to our regulars, make them quite well, I don't know you, therefor I can neither "like" nor "dislike" you just yet but given another opportunity I'm certain we shall get along just fine. Lastly, based on my non- stop movement behind the bar upon your last visit, accusing me of being lazy is simply, well... lazy. "The needs of the many come before the needs of the few", a wiser man than me once wrote and this I believe applies perfectly to your last visit Katie B. When you walked in last Sunday it was in your words busy but not chaotic. It was busy because we run a fine saloon and are exceedingly kind to our patrons. It was not chaotic because I'm a pretty damn good Barman. When you and your boyfriend walked in I had a full bar and there was about 6 cocktails in front of the two your boyfriend ordered. None of which were a Tequila Negroni which was too bad because then I could have doubled up on that cocktail and your boyfriends Sazarac as well and then we probably would not be having this... whatever this is. Let's focus instead on what did happen. I told you up front I was behind on cocktails. I gave you water without you even having to ask. I offered to serve you immediately if you desired anything other than a Tequila Negroni. Wine, Beer, highball, etc. right this very second. That offer was declined. I gave your boyfriend my name, apologized for the wait- to- come, and offered to buy you a round if at any time you felt you had waited too long. If that is poor service we must simply agree to disagree Katie B. My only two options were to either skip over every one else who was patiently waiting for a cocktail and make yours immediately and- or ignore every poor soul who simply wanted a Budweiser or a draft beer or to close a tab and make them ALL wait and watch me stir two cocktails. (Please refer to previous quote.) Neither one of these options are acceptable and thus I will never employ them. Therefor I stand, with apology, behind my professional performance last Sunday at Oak & Iron. I want to thank you Katie B for your hopefully continued patronage and would like to invite you and your boyfriend back next Sunday. My boyfriend and I live around the corner, and we were enjoying this addition to the neighborhood. Until we stopped by last night and were totally put off by the bartender. It was a Sunday, solidly busy but not chaotic. We ordered two cocktails, and he told us that he'd get us some glasses of water because it would be a while. Ok, I thought, he must have a long list of orders. As he was handing my boyfriend the water he reiterated that it would take some time, and said that if we got tired of waiting we could order something else. WTF? We still weren't sure what was going on, so we went back to our table with the water and watched as person after person at the bar ordered beer and received their drink immediately. Did this guy not know how to make our cocktails? Was he feeling lazy? Did he not like us? We didn't get it. After waiting a few more minutes and seeing no sign of our drinks being made my boyfriend went back to tell the bartender we were leaving and to cancel our drink order. Again he asked if we wanted something else. No, dude, we wanted the drinks we ordered. We went up the street to Black Rabbit instead. **In light of John F's response to my above review, I'd like to add this update: First, I'm grateful for his apology, and, especially, for his explanation of our experience at Oak and Iron. Perhaps now it's my turn to clear a few things up, regarding my expectations and interpretations of what happened. As I said in my first review, my initial thought was that there was a long list of orders, and I had no problem waiting. It was a nice night and we weren't in a hurry. I certainly didn't expect to be served before people who had ordered before us! What seemed strange was the suggestion that we place another order. It felt like John F was trying to pressure us into changing our order so that he wouldn't have to make our cocktails. From what he says, it sounds like that was not in fact his intention, but it's what we gathered at the time. I'll add that I was surprised to read that he "offered to buy [us] a round if at any time [we] felt [we] had waited too long." We never understood this to be the offer; instead, we had the impression that he just wanted us to reorder. A bar's a loud place, so I'm happy to assume this was another misunderstanding. I'm amending my rating from one star to three. The cocktails and ambiance are four stars for sure, and I'm hopeful that as we continue to patronize Oak and Iron, as I'm sure we will, the unpleasantness of the one night will be erased by the pleasantness of many others. read more

If you're in Greenpony and looking for a warm and cozy vibe, then look no further because Oak and Iron will provide you with a nice spot to have a drink...or two. The place is fairly small and the beers are reasonably priced for Brooklyn. I payed $12 for two beers, so I can't complain about that too much. The bathroom is well stocked with several rolls of toilet paper adorning the walls, so you can choose one to use...interesting. The bartenders provide quick service, but really aren't warm like the ambiance the oak tables and booths create; I think it really is the area in all honesty. Another reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because of my own personal let down when they didn't have Stella or Heinekin. The beer I chose, which in all honesty I can't remember at all but I know it was a Pilsner, was suffice, but for some reason it was served in a can. I don't know why that bothers me but it does. Beers to me never taste as good in cans as they do bottles. Maybe that's my own personal opinion, but nonetheless, it is my opinion. read more

Came here for one drink, asked the bartender if he was sure he put grapefruit juice in our drinks (I swear to god it was cranberry, or some weird mix of fruit juice - it was seriously unbearable) and he just said yeah and didn't ask if we wanted something else or offer to make anything different. Kinda bad customer service. I got through the drink but definitely didn't want to stay for another. There's not really a reason to go here (unless you're looking for an uncrowded bar) when there are sooo many better bars in Greenpoint. Oak and Iron left my friend and I thinking that we should've gone to Shayz, which is saying a lot. I've come here before and had a better time, but last night was frustrating. Was on a date with the man, and we wanted a cocktail before dinner. Kyle asked what rums the girl had, and she had no clue but brought over two bottles to show us - one was rum....and the other was not even close to being rum but maraschino?! We should have given up then, but we ordered a daiquiri with the actual rum. She looked absolutely baffled and then said they don't serve daiquiris. Ok, I get that I don't go to an Indian restaurant and order Italian, but a bar is a different story. I feel like if you have the ingredients, make the damn drink, especially if it's a simple classic (a daiquiri is literally just rum, lime, and sugar). Maybe she thought we wanted like a fruity frozen daiquiri or maybe she just didn't know how to make it. We'd have been happy to talk her through it if a little more communication had gone on. Good drinks Cons- Service Right before we went to meet friends at Oak and Iron, my cousin was telling us how she had gone during the week and after getting to talking with the bartender they came up with a drink together that he made and he joked they'd name it after her. They wrote it down what it consisted of and she kept it in her wallet. We went over Saturday night. They place was busy but at the moment we were the only 2 waiting for drinks. My cousin got the attention of the bartender, began to remind him of their encounter (4 days prior) and reminded him of the ingredients of the drink. We weren't bothered that he didn't remember, that happens. We were slightly put off by the lecture on how he has never and would never mix those liquors together. He finally suggested a drink he could make for her. As he wrapped up mixing that drink he asked if we needed anything else to which my cousin responded that I wanted to try a sip of hers before we ordered the 2nd drink to see if it was something I liked. He looked at us and with a sigh said, "so, I might have to make ANOTHER one of these!?" (rolled his eyes) and handed it over. At this point I was done. There's no way in a neighborhood full of great bars and appreciative bartenders that I was about to spend my money here. We finished that 1 drink together. A good low key bar. Since it is a small bar, it can get quite intimate, so it's a good place to bring a date or to catch up while having a drink or two. I believe it's also pet friendly since I saw a few doggies lounging around. The bartender was friendly and attentive and the drinks were reasonably priced.
