The Gibson is a pretty great spot to grab a stiff whiskey drink with friends if you are in the area. We came in here while staying in Brooklyn to catch up with family for a late-night Brooklyn evening. The crowd was tame and the music was bumping. It was great to watch the NY Yankees on the large projection screen inside while we enjoyed the brisk cool breeze. I really enjoy the social account that The Gibson runs on Instagram as they provide information on specials on drinks, events, and trivia too. Be sure to check it out so that you know what is going on. I saw they opened up on time to host NYC Marathoners while the route ran right through and in front of The Gibson. Select of whiskeys, for this Texas girl, was extensive! I saw many Texas whiskeys, of course, but the recommendations from the bar staff on what else to try (because I have tried a lottttttt of Texas whiskeys) hit the spot! read more

In addition to their superb whiskey, the also have about eight drafts on tap with a focus on local, craft beers. This is the place to drink. We stopped by here for a quick drink and it was a bit busy inside, but we ordered a beer and Bloody Mary and sat outside to people watch for a bit before heading to dinner to meet our friends. The Bloody Mary was average, about a 7/10. They have a variety of whiskey on the menu in addition to different beers, and they do offer flights. Their tap list focused on local craft beers which is always great when you want to taste some beers unique to the area. It wasn't too busy inside, and they took our order quickly, and was pretty uneventful inside at the time that we went. I dig this spot!!! Great spot that can host a large group of softball players with outdoor seating available on the sidewalk, an outdoor patio with a grill and a good amount of space and seating indoors. Respect to this place for being able to hold it down with my softball leagues season ending party. I've also been here with smaller groups and also just a friend. This bar has been an enjoyable experience each time. The bartenders are attentive and friendly. Decent selection of craft/draft beer along with wine and cocktail options. My softball league really enjoys this spot, and it sponsors a few teams so best believe I'll be showing my face more often during the season. read more

Had a great time here. The bar itself is on Bedford, so very easy to find. If you're looking for good beer, and excellent collection of whiskey, nice people, dogs (you can bring you dog here), and an outdoor space if it's not too cold, I'd say this is the place for you. They also allow outside food. If you're very into whiskey and need some help choosing something, Walt behind the bar is really knowledgeable, friendly, and will hook you up. 5/5. Great dive-ish bar vibe with great service! We wondered in after shopping Williamsburg for a couple happy hour beverages. The bartender was friendly and quick to help me find a local beer selection and suggest a crisp white wine for my wife! She smiled and was very pleasant which is always a huge plus in the "big city!" We hung out in the front window getting a plan together for other places in the community to check out on our last day in town. Restroom, bar, and seating area we selected were clean which helped us stick around for a couple drinks before heading on to the next spot. Love this place to the moon and back. Fantastic spot. I stopped by here to meet a couple of good folks. Namely, John, Jack, Jim. They invited a few overseas friends, Laphroaig, Macallan, Arbeg and there were a few others, Don Julio, etc. That said, it was worth it...I think. This place is different than other similar places in this hood. There are several places that try to do this. They dont do it quite as well as they do here at The Gibson. The long bar when you walk in will be inviting and there will be a bartender behind that bar. He/She will know how to pour a drink and will keep them coming. Space for days yet wont swallow you up. Place was decent, had a frosé drink and it was ok. I would've given an extra star but I was hassled by the female bartender who followed me outside the business and confronted me about a tip. She wasnt even the one who made my drink but felt it necessary to display that embarrassing behavior out in public view. She even threw in that the bar does not pay her enough and other struggles in the job as well clearly pointing out she needed the extra $3 more than me I guess. Came here a couple months ago on a week night around 9pm. 3 male employees behind the bar. Only about 6 other customers in the entire bar. Place was almost empty. Bartenders kept looking at me and talking to each other but no one would come over. After 5 full minutes of us staring at each other, I waved at them (my last effort before I was just gonna leave). The guy came over and was so rude and sarcastic, wouldn't even make eye contact. Later, they went down the bar asking people if they needed another drink and skipped me with my empty glass. Left after that. Hard to ignore they were dudes being rude to one of the only women there. Got really bad vibes here, I live a couple blocks away and def not coming back. read more

Me and my mate went to the Gibson on Monday July 3rd and it is infested with roaches behind the bar. We first saw a roach crawling but my cup i informed the bartender and he began to look for the critter. the other bartender made a joke saying u looking for critter and he says yes they saw it. while we waited on the bill we saw over 20 roaches crawling all over the bar where cups and the liquor is place. after getting the bill I noticed they didn't even give us a discount for these roaches crawling by us. another customer killed one of the roaches after is crawled by his hand. not to mention the double charged our card. they need an exterminator ASAP I couldn't believe how infested the bar was and how they was so use it. It was a stellar day, 75 degrees and the big window were wide open. A beauty of a lady sat up front, in the sun, reading a book. A couple of guys from college were catching up at the bar. A few gangs of office mates mingles inside. 3 hours later I was doing shots. Best friends with the barkeep. Best friends with the chick driving cross country. Best friends with the couple moving to Belize. Damn. It's not a dive but not fancy. Just a place to have a drink or six in a big, open, casual space that has a cool patio as well. read more

Gibson's a pretty chill place, so it was weird that we came here for the Superbowl, but it all worked out. They don't serve food, but they did have some amazing Buffalo wings for the big game care of Dan and John's. The bartenders are definitely hipsterish and tend to skew more California than Midwest (I could be wrong). It took 5-10 minutes to get a drink at one point, even though 3 bartenders were huddled together, but I was told "we'll be with you in a moment" and the Dude abided. No food here but great whiskey and always 4 or 5 really quality drafts. There's a garden in the back, too. read more

Ugh, gross. For the love of God, don't come here. I love a good dive, but this ain't it. From the outside looking in, we thought it would be a decent place because there seemed to be a good amount of people already there and it looked like it would be fun. The bar also had a nice selection. However, as soon as we walked in, the place reeked of spoiled beer and sweat. I grabbed a drink menu which I immediately regretted due to its stickiness and appearance of dried alcohol and mold in the pages. The bartenders were nowhere to be found to even order a drink, so we left. I noticed other patrons had brought in outside food, so that's a plus, I guess. read more

Now I have never written a review before, but felt inclined to do so today. Not even halfway through our drinks we were being pressured to leave. I get it, I've worked in the industry and you don't want to stay longer than you have to - especially if you're closing that late, but please let us finish our drinks that we paid for, or don't serve us that late if that's something you aren't willing to do. Stopped by here for a drink after working at the bean across the street. Drinks were cool. Venue was relaxed and lots of space. There was also a foosball table there and a big screen where you could watch football. It's a cool place in the summer because there's a big window at the front and you can people watch or enjoy the view. I believe it's also dog friendly. Was a little chilly when I went but I went when it was just starting to be fall. read more

I will not be coming back to the Gibson and would never recommend it. The male bartender was extremely rude. He rolled his eyes when we ordered a certain type of drink and then mocked my friend and me. He obviously didn't think we could see him mocking us, but we could and did see it. It was completely inappropriate and uncalled for. We were perfectly nice and pleasant. Don't support this type of immature, rude male behavior. read more

The thing about raw oysters is that either you love them, like, love them so much you wouldn't mind being embalmed with mignonette and buried in a casket crammed with of Kumamotos, or you find them so vile that you retch at the mere mention of "raw bar." example me: "Hey, sugar smacks, want to hit up a raw bar for dinner?" you: **BARF** /example I happen to be of the former, so when a friend mentioned that the Gibson does a raw oyster night once a month (that sometimes coincides with lobster roll night), I put on my best eating bib and raced over. In the back garden of a Bedford Avenue bar in much maligned Williamsburg, I found Valhalla. Or, I just found a great deal: half dozen oysters for 10$, full dozen for 20$ or ALL YOU CAN EAT OYSTERS for 35$. Being a Stuyvesant High School graduate, I was quick to realize that the best price per unit option was the AYCE, if i managed to down at least three dozen. Pfft! Child's play. There were three varieties of oysters, and after I paid the lovely young man shucking oysters behind a red and white plastic covered table, he asked what my selection preference was. "Mix it up and give me it all," I declared. He laughed in response. I went inside, ordered a Prosecco(9$) at the bar, and returned to my party, who were taking careful bites of their lobster rolls (16$/each). "This is so good," one friend said with her mouth full. My date didn't even bother looking at me, so engrossed was he with his food. At least he was kind enough to let me eat the chunks of lobster that strayed from his roll and into the container: sweet, briny, well seasoned. Yup, that's lobster. Oyster guy came over and plunked down a dozen oysters, four of each variety. There were Bluepoints, Kumamotos and some other one I've forgotten now. Lemon wedges rested beside the oysters, all plated haphazardly on ice. "Looks good," I observed. And then, like a blur, in a frantic windmill motion of arms and hands, a wild frenzied moment that probably lasted about forty minutes, I managed to put down four dozen oysters. (That's 48 oysters, dudes, if you don't know math. Math and I are old friends.) My friends watched first in awe, then in horror. Someone observed my bowel movement would smell like low tide the next day. I considered going for the fifth dozen but then realized if I did, I would no longer have any other aspirations. So, I thanked the fellow running the bivalve show, tipped him well, finished my Prosecco and disappeared into the evening. When I'm ready to pursue the next milestone of five dozen raw oysters, I'll be back. I suspect it will be soon. read more

When I moved to New York (and yes, that was many, many moons ago) I thought that my life would be one big sitcom. I figured there would be a Kramer-like neighbor who would raid my refrigerator and underwear drawer. I assumed I'd have one friend of every ethnicity and a close group of girlfriends that I would run around the city being stylish with while drinking cosmopolitans and never gaining a pound. And I definitely thought I'd have my own version of Cheers... a neighborhood bar where everyone knew my name and my idiosyncrasies and I would know theirs. Well needless to say, none of my neighbors raid my refrigerator, and I tend to work in coffee shops instead of bonding over sex (or lack thereof) stories. My girlfriends and I run (in sneakers not stillettos) and I have developed an odd fondness for not-so-stylish elastic waist anything... because I do drink and I do gain pounds. ... And I never found my Cheers. So the other night, friends and I wandered over to the Gibson. Buried in the not-ironic-anymore Williamsburg, the Gibson is a small gem, with a very attentive owner named Geoff. It was my Cheers (albeit far from home), complete with TV's, a long bar, a backyard and a friendly smile. The service was great. The drinks were solid. The atmosphere was just plain comfortable. Much nicer than a college dive and not so nice that I can't wear the aforementioned elastic waist pants... The Gibson made me long for the NYC life I thought I'd live. So perhaps, it is possible, that a decade later I could start to have that sit-com life. Or maybe I'll just settle for the fact that I have found my far-from-home Cheers. read more

When Devon asked us where we were from, Omar said he was from SF but that I was bridge and tunnel. As I was about to point out we were in Brooklyn, Devon said, "Oh, Oakland?" That distracted me and made me homesick at the same time. The bar was spacious with a lot of seating and dimly lit in a good way. The selection of beers on tap was nice and they were very cool with letting us taste stuff. There was also a fireplace and an appropriate for Williamsburg, or any hipster haven, soundtrack playing.
