My family and I came here intending to eat dinner and upon waiting for a table decided to get drinks from the bar. It took a LONG time for anyone to address us, much less take any orders. When one brunette finally came over to us, I ordered a drink for my sister and I (with both our IDs), and my other sister ordered, but only had a picture of her ID on her phone, so the bartender wouldn't accept her order. So then my dad ordered, and because he ordered the same drink as my sister who only had a picture of her ID, the bartender said she wouldn't take that order either. I told her my dad hadn't placed his order yet, and she came back and said she had the right to refuse to serve us, and that she wouldn't take orders from us. I have never experienced anything like that or anyone so rude, and will not come back. read more

For years our go-to beachside restaurant in the Saint Augustine area was South Beach Grill. Well - it's gone. I'm not sure if it was victim of Covid-19 or bad management or both. Our daughter and her wife recently bought a house here after living with us for over a year because of the pandemic. Her spouse was allowed to work entirely from home for the entire time (still is), but she was relocated to the Jacksonville office. They LOVE Saint Augustine and since she will only have to go to the office twice a week when they do go back, they just didn't want to live in Jacksonville. My wife and I helped them to move and I drove the moving truck from Tennessee to their new home. Our first few nights were spent in a hotel and decided to eat at Mango Mango just down the A1A Beach Blvd. After eating there we decided to take a short walk to the beach when we came upon this little gem sitting just behind the dunes. Looking like a dive with blue LED tube lights attached to the deck rails and partially working Christmas icicle lights hanging from the deck eaves we decided to try it the next night. Ocean-worn picnic tables of varying sizes occupied the outside seating. There are about five metal picnic tables with patio umbrellas sitting in the sand between the restaurant and the dunes. They had triangle sails for additional protection from the sun and the rain (sorta) were stretched from posts. This was my favorite spot. There was a makeshift bar waiting area to the left of the hostess station on the deck as well as a combination of plastic and wood Adirondack chairs sitting in the sand by the dunes. Did I mention we went there about 6 times in a two week period?! Was every meal a life changing experience? No, but every meal - coupled with the atmosphere, top-notch staff, cool ocean breezes and scenic surroundings made for a very relaxed and very enjoyable dining experience. The ONLY menu item I was somewhat disappointed with was the shrimp Po-Boy. All it really needed was for the bread to be a little softer, fresher and definitely buttered and then toasted on the flat-top. It was basically taken from the package, loaded with the shrimp and veggies and served. The many items tried (mainly by my daughter-in-law and myself) were The Big Fish Reuben, The Catch of the Day fried, Stuffed Catch of the Day, grilled catch of the day (Trigger fish), Crab cakes, red beans and rice, chips and Guacamole, calamari, Minorclan Clam Chowder, vegetarian brat, fish and chips, coleslaw, dill cucumber potato salad, entree salad with the special blue cheese dressing (forget the exact name), fried shrimp dinner and of course the French fries. There was steamed shrimp, steamed ruby red shrimp, more steamed shrimp, more steamed ruby red shrimp, steam shrimp and ruby read shrimp - channeling Bubba Gump - sorta - did I mention steamed shrimp? My wife and daughter had steamed shrimp the first night and that is pretty much all they got! Then they found the Ruby Red Shrimp on the Specials menu. Every. Single. Meal. The fries were frozen, but they were good - I guess no one wants to slice potatoes anymore - shame - that would make it next level. The red beans and rice was really good. Everything was good except the aforementioned Po Boy, but it was OK and had a good portion of shrimp - the same shrimp used in the shrimp dinner. It basically goes without saying that the steamed shrimp was good. The Ruby Red has the taste and texture of lobster and is best served warm with melted butter. As mentioned - the location and atmosphere added immensely to the experience of dining here. Hey - shoes were optional and swimsuits were allowed as were dogs - leashed and only on the deck. We only went inside to go to the restroom - it's more of a bar scene in there (read - LOUD). We sat with our toes in the sand the majority of our visits - except that night it rained, but they were able to move us under the roof even though they were pretty busy. Oh - the Key Lime Pie - a few pieces were bought over the course of our visit. It was good. One piece that was to be taken back to the house, was dropped in the sand during a beach walk - ironically while we were talking about the episode of FRIENDS where the cheesecake was dropped on the floor! Let's start with the positives.....there are none. We chose this restaurant because it claims it is dog friendly, I have a diabetic alert service dog and the manager came over and stated that it is a health code violation to be holding the dog. I informed her that it was a diabetic alert dog and she reiterated that he needed to stay on the floor because it was a health code violation: ADA states "Generally, the dog must stay on the floor, or the person must carry the dog. For example, if a person with diabetes has a glucose alert dog, he may carry the dog in a chest pack so it can be close to his face to allow the dog to smell his breath to alert him of a change in glucose levels". My dog was in a chest pack. The other large dog that was barking was face level with the top of the picnic table. If this manager was so concerned with health code violations, she should start with their nasty bathrooms and the slasher movie corridors you must navigate to get there. Most of the food was bland and pretty much tasteless. I was put off by the attitude of the staff more than the taste of the food... I will not be going back. read more

I absolutely loved this place! It's perfect for locals and tourists. It's right on the beach and has a fenced in area for kids to play in the sand with plenty of toys. We got a seat on the back deck right away and were surrounded by casual diners with their kids and dogs. Beer prices seemed fair, we ordered a few rounds. The service was average to slow, but there are plenty of signs around the place that set that expectation. We ordered the quac and chips for an appetizer and were pleased with the serving size. The chips were well salted and the quac was okay. I ordered the fish tacos, seasoned, with a side of fries. It was great! I opted to put shrimp in the tacos and was happy with my choice. Another person in our group ordered the burger with the black beans and rice and finished the entire plate quickly. Overall, the ambiance is casual, beachy, and a great spot to stop on your way home from the beach. Will definitely be back! read more

Every year we visit St. Augustine and come to this restaurant. For the past 34 years it has been one of our favorites, EXCEPT for this year. Last night (July 22nd) we arrived at approximately 6 pm, gave our name and phone number and waited. We were told it would be about 50 minutes. No problem, we were not in a rush. After an hour and a half, checking back twice, and asking the "supervisor" as she passed if we were still on the list, (which she said we were without even looking), we were told they at the desk that they had been "texting all night"... We received not one text. The girl said (with attitude) that she had also been shouting out our name. We were standing right near the door and did NOT hear our name, although we heard everyone else's. She looked at the iPad and showed us there was no phone number associated with our name. We gave my cell number as we specifically said that my husband left his at home. BTW, how could she be "texting all night" when they hadn't recorded our phone number? Then she basically called me a liar when she said we never left our phone number. I asked if she was calling me a liar. We received no apology. The place is now run by inexperienced young girls who spent a lot of time socializing and not doing their job (we had plenty of time to observe). Needless to say we didn't stay and won't return, not at least for a while. Hopefully they will hire competent workers in the future as it is one of our favorite places to eat. Till then, we won't be back nor will we recommend it. read more

We had great service at this little beach place to duck out of the rain. We started with an appetizer of the guac and it was served with hot chips. This place implies there's a good waterfront view. The fact is there are two tables outside in the blistering heat that have a view down the street to see 25 feet of ocean. Other than that you get to stare at weeds while sitting inside In 91 degree heat. Visited this establishment on May 4 Th. I had the pork belly taco's which was the special that day for lunch . I will say those were the best taco's That I had every!! The owner .. which can not remember his name told me that a cook had brought this idea too him Don't remember the sauce that was on top . Very very good . My wife got the shrimp dinner , came with fries and a vegetable . She also said that her food tasted very good !! Very very happy with the service .. a gal named Kelli waited on us .. and she was SO AMAZING !!! She told us about all of the specials for the day . This atmosphere here is beautiful. Being able to see the ocean while you eat is an experience, especially if you're on vacation. The food is pretty good as is the service. The only reason I didn't give this place a full 5 stars is because it's lacking a serious "wow" factor. I enjoy this place, but it is not my top restaurant in st Augustine. We had a fantastic experience at the Beachcomber! After a day out on St. Augustine Beach, we stopped by for an early dinner. We started with their frozen margarita and frozen daiquiri - both of which were strong and delicious! We ordered their fish sandwich, fried with tarter sauce served with fries and the fish taco, blackened served with red beans and rice. The fresh catch was Trigger Fish which was used for both dishes. Starting with the first sandwich, it came with three fried fillets that weren't greasy at all. The fries were very tasty (almost battered) and they were not shy on the portion size. The blackened trigger fish tacos were delicious - great flavor - and the red beans and rice were pretty good too. Some of the best beach bar food I've had. read more

We had two orders of fish and chips the fries were so over cooked had to ask for new ones and the fried flounder had more batter than fish! I had the fish sandwich just as bad as the fish and chips! We have dined there many times since we moved here in 2000. It has changed ownership and the menu expanded. When we dine in the food is very good. The last two times we have ordered takeout. The first takeout order was burned well beyond salvage. Last night we tried again. Wrong. My wife ordered the fresh catch (trigger fish) lettuce, tomato, dill sauce, and onion with potato salad. I ordered the same with fries. I ordered the same with fries. When I got home, the fish was scrappy pieces. There was no lettuce tomato or onion. The dill sauce was tarter sauce and the tiny wedge of lemon still had the UPC sticker on it. Shame on them. Let the buyer beware. I won't go back. My bad for not checking I guess. We have enjoyed their world famous fish sandwiches for years but on our last visit the catch of the day was "unicorn fish" ??? I looked it up, a Pacific Ocean reef fish. I'm willing to try new things and I've never had a bad meal meal there, so I gave it a try. Wow, yuck! Fried tofu would have had more flavor. The texture of the fish was mushy and so bland that no amount of salt could help. I left most of it. A real waste at $13.00. To make matters worse, the house wine (on happy hour special) was undrinkable. I left most of that also. On a happier note, the fries were crispy, hot and quite tasty and the service was good. After so many years of good food, I'm willing to give the Beachcomber another try, but no more unicorn fish for me. read more

This small gem in the dunes is well worth the visit ! The food has been spot on in all of my half dozen visits during my stay in st augustine beach ! The fish Ruben in to die for and everything else is by far the best place I have eaten in the area and sadly it's not even close . The place is charming like an old beach front shack so you get that old time Florida laid back feel. There are places with more posh appointments but there touristy approach to food is quite evident . They don't really care about repeat business it's all about shear numbers . This place hasnt forgotten what customer service is all about . Trust me I worked in customer svc for over 25 years . There hasn't been a time that I wasn't asked how my meal and experience was . A true tribute to the commitment to providing a quality memorable experience .
