Where are the Soul Food spots in SGV vicinity??? A friend drove in from Palm Springs and we were looking for a soul food spot without having to go to LA and had to settle on BB's Cafe in Covina. I tried their food years ago and was somewhat disappointed so I never went back til today. So I'm thinking, they're still in business, maybe they got better...NOT!! I feel so bad in writing this because the hostess Michelle was sooo sweet, and funny, and accommodating. And she asked for a Yelp review. Canned yams, canned greens, at least that's what it tastes like. Almost no batter on the catfish. The shrimp, however, were delicious. Hush puppies which I don't usually eat were delicious. Mac n cheese was good but a little dry. And the potato salad was a little too tart with too many bell peppers and black olives in it. Everything served in styrofoam containers and paper plates even when you dine in. Next time I'll just make my own soul food at home. I don't wanna give up on them because it's the only soul food place in the SGV/Eastern part of LA County. Who wants to go all the way to LA? I'm sorry Michelle. Your personality makes it worth another try. But it might be a while before we try again. read more

Just had this for brunch earlier today, and everything was delicious! We had the chicken and waffles and the pulled pork sandwich with sides of greens and mac and cheese. The chicken was juicy with a nice crispy skin and the waffle was soft and springy, served with butter and syrup I could not get enough. My husband and I ordered the chicken and waffles with a side of Mac and cheese. The chicken was just okay for the both of us. The crispy coat did not have too much flavor to us. My husband liked the Mac and cheese but I like my mac and cheese to be more on the creamy side. However, the waffle is the best waffle I've had by far. It tasted strongly of vanilla and was soft and warm on the inside. I ate it with just the butter and it was heaven! I'd go back for the waffle alone. What's especially important about this restaurant is that is black Arnold and women on. I will suggest that you support them just on those two accounts along. The restaurant is small so if you come with a group large group, you have to know that there's only 3 tables with four chairs each so that's important because my group was a group at nine and fortunately there was enough seating for us, but if the restaurant was busy, then we were, we would be at a loss. I ordered the pan fried catfish with greens and cheese eggs. My meal was OK. I took a risk because all of the reviews say that the fried chicken is the bomb but no one mentioned the catfish. Tucked into old down town if you didn't know you just might miss it...we got the chicken n waffles and catfish n waffles the chicken was like you were sitting at your grandmas table! Let me just start with saying there are no restrooms for you here.... I really can't understand why someone would open a restaurant and NOT have it available for customers to use. So I would say that this place is not kid or pregnant lady friendly... you are also serving fried chicken and you're eating with your hands.... But you can't wash your hands... obviously there is a restroom in there, if you're not allowing people to walk to the back... are you hiding something?? Just something to consider. Other than that the people are fine, not super nice or mean, cordial. The fried stuff was good, the waffle was decent but the pulled pork we did not finish. The food is not bad, but we probably won't be coming back. Did I add that you have to pay .25 for a cup of ice.... I mean you already don't let me wash my hands and use the restroom... The cafe is small only 4 tables but the hospitality and quality of food was big time. I was greeted by Michelle who gave me the rundown on the menu items. I saw someone post about the breakfast burritos on Facebook on Monday and sent my husband to get the breakfast burrito with pulled pork on Tuesday and its delicious, the salsa that comes om the side was also so flavorful! The burrito had a smoky flavor and I am still day dreaming about it! It was so good in fact that I sent my hubby back the very next day to get the breakfast burrito with hot links, mmmm mmmmm GOOD! We also got a breakfast burrito with pulled pork for my parents the first day and my mom was SO sad she missed out on the hot link one the next day lol.
