This place is about the only breakfast spot in walking distance from my place. The staff is very welcoming and nice. This food was ok... I had the eggs Benedict... the sauce was a little blan and the biscuit was not of great quality. A mimosa would have made it a little bit better, however, I don't think they have a liqueur license to do so. I took in Bay Leaf Cafe for brunch on a whim. The food smelled great from outside and it looked like a nice place. For the positives, the staff were friendly and helpful. The cafe was basically empty, and the service was not as great as previous reviews state, but I think it was good and pleasant. I'd give the service a solid 4.5 stars. There were some negatives, though. Firstly, the coffee. Wow. It was really, really awful. It tasted like cigarette ashes. Also, the mug was dirty. Not like someone had used it, but like it hadn't been washed. The mug had a tan stain in the entire mug -- higher than the coffee fill line. Stain is too strong a word; the tan residue came off when my spoon touched it. The coffee was zero stars. I can't fathom serving coffee like that and asking patrons to pay for it. I never put sugar in my coffee, but I did here to compensate for the taste. The breakfasts were not meaningfully better. For my, my eggs over easy were perfectly cooked, but cold. The bacon was more like bacon jerky -- cold and rubbery. The hash browns were only cooked on one side and that side was slightly burned. And the toast was served so cold that the butter that came on it didn't melt. But my girlfriend's breakfast was worse. The corn tortillas were like leather, very dry leather. The chorizo filling for it was, like all of my breakfast, the same temperature as the plate. She did get two servings of hash browns, but both were room temperature and BURNED. Not overcooked, but actually burned. Burned. Let's let that sink in a bit. They served food that they had burned but let it sit long enough to cool to room temperature. Could they have re-cooked unburned food in that time? Who knows. Also, the insides of the burned hash browns were mush and inedible. For both of us, the hash browns were basically flavorless. I didn't taste any spices whatsoever in them. The food, in toto, was the blandest food I've eaten at a cafe in a LONG time. It may be the blandest food I've eaten at any restaurant ever, in fact. My feeling is, based on the other reviews for the cafe, most of which are favorable, I may have just gotten there at a bad time or when the cook was exhausted from a long morning shift or who knows. The food they served us was of inexcusably poor quality, but it may well have been a fluke. I'm not sure if I would give them a second chance or not, though. If I were to, it would be at a different time than early Sunday afternoon and I would order something other than breakfast. One other thing that irked the heck out of me -- they charge a split-plate fee ($1.) I think I've split a plate all of twice in the last ten years, but charging a fee for that is pretty obnoxious. No restaurant I frequent charges to split a plate. That's not an accident on my part, either. I really enjoyed the service and the food was terrific! They were soooo accommodating! The waitresses were quick to fill up your cup and were very friendly. It took a while to get the food.. but it was worth the wait!!! My mom loved her omelet and potatoes were great! I loved the big steak fries and they had big portions! And I love that the meat from my french dip was sliced thick and was sliced there at the restaurant. I also really enjoyed the colors and decorations, very warm and welcoming! I went to visit a friend yesterday in Concord and decided to go check out this place only because it was the most crowded looking restaurant in the area. I sat at the counter top and immediately ordered a coffee. Then I was tossing between breakfast and lunch and decided to go w/ the veggie sandwich which comes with seasonal fruit. There are a few young ladies who work there, but aren't the friendliest and held conversations amongst themselves in the corner table.Which obviously put a drag on their service. They charged me extra on the fruit even when it stated that it comes with the sandwich and their coffee is way to watered down. Eh..... read more

The staff was really nice. The ambience was small diner feel. Nice if a little boring. It could have been cleaner- the first table I chose had dirt on it. Yes, dirt. The food is where it lost two stars. It was bland to the point of boring. The hash browns were crispy at first but so laden with oil that it quickly became soggy. They also had no flavor other than oil. I got their breakfast sandwich bc I wanted to taste their "homemade" biscuits. These tasted like frozen biscuits that had been warmed up in a microwave. I've been here twice now and have enjoyed it both times. It's been super busy both times, but service was good and the food came pretty quickly. Portions are great and everyone in my family enjoys the food, from adults and teenager to elementary and preschool kids. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five was because my husband had to step in, when we were waiting for a table, to suggest that they seat us at a small table for six rather than bypassing us several times to keep seating two tops. We would rather be a tiny bit squished than wait for over 15 to 20 minutes for a table while watching people getting there later than us get tables before us. Guy Fieri should totally come here to film an episode of DDD. It's the quintessential all-American local diner and a great place to come for breakfast. Since we got here before 9.30, we didn't have to wait for a table. As we left an hour later, there was at least a 10-person line waiting to get in, which is a testament to this place. This hit the spot after a crazy night out in the city. One point: I know it's a diner and therefore should expect portion sizes to be twice as much as a sane human being should reasonably eat in one sitting, but I wish the waitress had accommodated me when I asked if she could serve up a smaller combo. I ended up getting two eggs over-medium (definitely made over-easy), hash browns and French toast. The French toast by itself - powdered with just the right amount of sugar - would have been a perfect breakfast. As it was, I had to kill the eggs and the hash (which was pretty tasty) before I could dive into the French toast. Even though I got disgustingly full, images of starving kids kept popping up in my head every time I was tempted to leave a morsel or two behind. Back when I used to work in the area, this was my favorite place to go for an omelet. I was in the area short time ago and made a point to go here for brunch. The omelets are still huge and the hash browns are still delish. I always left this place super stuffed. I can't say much on the other items on the menu since I could never get past the omelets. A girl at the table next to me did order pancakes with strawberries that looked realllllly good though. The restaurant is a little small so if your timing is a little off, you may have to wait for a table to open up. There's tables outside, but if the heat is on, go for the AC inside. read more

English muffins were soggy and a huge piece of ham was overhanging the muffins. On top, poached eggs were drenched in a very greasy and unappetizing looking hollandaise sauce. Country potatoes were ok but I prefer them with some crisp. Apple juice was served in clear hard plastic cup that smelled of cleaning products. Love this little cafe! Tucked away on a quiet street in Concord, it's easy to miss at first. We started going here back in 2012 when I was pregnant with my daughter. Their regualr menu is a little pricey, but we always order off the specials menu, and the food is SO GOOD! The staff is friendly, prompt and helpful. I cannot rave enough about them, seriously. The last time we went there, my daughter threw up all over my husband and the table right as we sat down (not related to their food, thankfully!). The waitstaff was so understanding and helpful. Worth at least 5 stars for that alone! Parking can be a pain (street parking) when they get busy, but it's worth circling the block a few times just to find a spot. I've been here 3 times now, and only once was the service what I would expect. I like the menu choices, especially since those I brunch with usually have food restrictions/specifications, myself included. I have no complaints regarding the food, in general. So far, all appetites have been satisfied. Service can be slow. Service staff is inconsistent - some people at least act like they enjoy what they are doing and try to be pleasant. And when only 6 tables are being serviced, it shouldn't take 40 minutes to get your food. We're talking omelet's and sandwiches, not osso buco. If it weren't so close to where I live, I might have to think about going back. There are several good brunch choices in Walnut Creek where you would pay the same amount, but I hate the hassle of finding parking on a Sunday morning. read more

I apologized, he kept yelling at me. Turns out he left the door open to go buy cigarettes and I was supposed to Divine from the universe that they had closed. I get it, I surprised him. But there was no call to yell at me and call me names. I have eaten here before and it was okay. But from now on they won't get a dime from me. I don't support places that are associated with jerks. It is a bit of a hole in the wall from the outside, but inside is cozy and clean and has delicious food. The breakfast menu is large and delicious. The staff is very friendly. I have mixed feelings in this review, we had been about 4 times, and I was feeling good about making this a regular Sunday breakfast outing, but our last visit on November 18th made it clear that we will not be returning to The Bay Leaf Café. The food is good, not great, but good, the waitresses are very nice and the coffee cups stayed full, the service pretty quick. But.. and this is a big but for us... before our food arrived, a middle aged couple came in with a small dog, and the manager allowed the dog to sit in a chair at one of the tables inside the restaurant by the window. There was plenty of outdoor seating, even though it was a bit chilly outside. I love dogs, I have two of my own, but bringing a dog into a place that serves food, and then it not even having it sit on the ground was too much. I had the horrible fear of wondering if I would find dog hair floating in the air and into my food. Besides the fact that my partner eating with me that morning is also allergic to dogs. I overheard several of the other customers making the same comments about the dog being inside next to the door where every time the door was opened a rush of wind would blow through its hair. So, no matter how good the food, or how nice the service, I just can't go back with that thought of dog hair floating around.. ps... in response that the "Yorky" was a service dog.. I am sure that is what the owners told the Mgt.. however, service dogs are 1) taught to sit at the owners feet, it is very important that service dogs maintain the mentality that they are not elevated to a "person's" status level, otherwise they would not carry out their tasks without thinking they were in line for any "alpha dog" status.. 2) they have special tags and often vests they are supposed to wear.. and 3) even if this Yorky was a service dog, the persons who brought it into the restaurant carried it in as if they were Paris Hilton. this is just plain rude behavior on the behalf of the dog owners and I am sorry Bay Leaf got stuck, but that is what the outside tables are for... read more

Can't figure why this place only has a 3.5 rating. We stopped in on a Wednesday late morning while in Concord on business and had the basic two-egg breakfast with no meat. The eggs were perfect, both the hash browns and country potatoes were excellent and all the breads were Semifreddi (my raisin toast was the best I've ever had). We sat at the counter because we love to watch a good short-order cook. This guy was a pro (he even blotted the excess grease off the bacon before plating) and friendly. The pancakes and French toast and breakfast sandwiches that we watch bring prepared looked KILLER (they use Niman Ranch meats)! Our waitress could not have been more friendly or attentive. Went here for the first time last Sunday. We were pleasantly surprised to find an awesome breakfast place with reasonable prices after many years of searching. Not sure why this place never caught our attention before, but it sure has now! My hubby had one of their special omelets and enjoyed it a great deal. I had their three cheese omelet with egg beaters (had to cut out some fat to make way for the decadence of bacon, tomatoes, green onions, cream cheese and two other cheeses). Yes the three cheese could be considered a heart attack on a plate, but it was truly delicious! The hash browns had the right amount of crispiness to them, which is of the utmost importance (squishy hash browns are an disgrace!) Service was also prompt and they came by often to fill our coffee mugs. This is now in my top three breakfast places in the Walnut Creek/Concord/Lafayette/Pleasant Hill areas. read more
