I have passed by this intriguing little building since moving here in 2005, but never set foot in it until a recent Sunday evening. I did make a reservation, and was glad because the place really filled up at a fast but steady rate.
I adore the inside of this place, it was built in the late 50's and it seems not much has changed since. It reminds me of a place you might see in a David Lynch film, set in some strange part of Los Angeles. Yummy.
The service was wonderful, from our servers pleasant presence to the pace at which our selections arrived on the table. The complimentary cheesy bread and herb butter was pretty great, my boyfriend couldn't keep his hands and mouth off of them. We ordered mussels for our starter and a glass of blush wine for a nice balance against the saltiness of the rich broth riddled with diced tomatoes, buttery with a hint of wine and tarragon-so good. Now for our entrees, this was a tough decision indeed.
There was the 10 oz prime rib special of the night for $25, and all the other different beef options that sounded scrumptious (we were there for red meat but they have a wide variety of fish and poultry as well), the entire menu was making me salivate. I ended up going with the Steak David and the boyfriend got the Sugar Steak, which they are said to be famous for.
I really appreciate that with each entree you order there is a choice of soup or salad AND a choice of potato, the plate also comes with a nice pile of seasonal steamed veggies that are seasoned quite well. The salads were impressive, nice leafy greens and a bounty of veggies, instead of the usual iceberg 'mix' you sometimes end up with. They make all of the salad dressings in house, I highly suggest the bleu cheese and the walnut vinaigrette.
Our steaks were both cooked wonderfully and I really liked the grilled shrimp and the Cajun bearnaise on my Steak David. And that stuffed baked potato was awesome, bacon, cheddar, green onions and sour cream! When I asked for a bit more sour cream a little pot of heaven was set down in front of me, seasoned sour cream with a strong possibility of cottage cheese mixed in? I could buy this by the pound! Sugar steak was great, the glaze on the outside is pretty damn mouth friendly. Dessert was a nice Salted Caramel and vanilla cake with a scoop of ice cream.
By the time we left, the place was packed and it wasn't even 7pm yet. I will be returning for sure, I love the idea of enjoying a local steak joint that has been around for more than half a century. It is not very expensive but not cheap either, it's quality food and you pay for it. They also have a separate bar area that looked interesting, possibly a 'regulars' spot.
*since the entrees come with your choice of soup or salad, an appetizer is not necessary.
